  1. Hello. If you have talked to me or seen my posts, you might have suspected that I like DC Comics. I have noticed that a couple others here do as well, so lets talk about it! Here are some starting points for discussion. Choose one, choose al, choose none, I don't care: -- Have you ever read a DC comic book or graphic novel? Can you tell us what they are and give a brief summary without spoilers? What graphic novels do you want to get (a wish list)? -- What are some of your favorite and disliked characters/factions? Why? -- Do you enjoy both Marvel, DC, and other comic book franchises/universes, or do you strictly prefer one over the other. -- What are your feelings about Warner Bros.' in-development DCCU (DC Cinematic Universe)? Do you think Man of Steel was a good movie to start from? -- Do you want Hans Zimmer to make all the music for the DCCU? -- Have you heard about the television shows Arrow and The Flash? Do you watch them? What are your feelings about the shows? Do you think there will be more spin-offs? -- Do you think CBS' up-coming show Supergirl will be good? Should it take place in the same universe as the aforementioned shows? -- How is the TV show Constantine? I haven't watched it (my mother watches too many TV shows and thus couldn't find an opening for myself)..Has Swamp Thing made an appearance, or any other supernatural DC characters; do you think characters such as, Raven or Brother Blood will make an appearance? Do you want this show to take place in the same world as CW's Arrow and The Flash? -- Do you think TNT's up-coming show Teen titans will be any good? -- How do you feel about all these DC Universe television shows? -- Do you think Teen Titans Go! is funny? Do you enjoy the easter eggs pertaining to the rest of the DC Universe in every episode as much as I do? -- Have you seen any of the animated DC direct-to-DVD movies? -- Were you disappointed about the discontinuation of the DC Animated Universe, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, and Young Justice? -- Batman has a series of video games, just in-case you didn't know. Can you see any other character getting a quality video game? -- Would you count LEGO's BIONICLE as being part of the DC Universe? Could you see characters such Onepu and Balta being Green Lanterns for the Solis Magna solar system? Would Darkseid take interest in Spherus Magna because of all the powerful characters and the avatar the makes up the planet's core? Would the Great Beings have had contact with Kryptonians in ages past before the Core War? -- Any other topics you wish to raise? i will answer a few of them for myself: -- Have you ever read a DC comic book or graphic novel? Can you tell us what they are and give a brief summary without spoilers? What graphic novels do you want to get (a wish list)? I have only read the following graphic novels: Batman: Birth of the Demon and Aquaman: The Trench. I would like to get: --- Aquaman: The Others, Aquaman: Throne of Atlantis, Batman: Court of Owls, Batman: City of Owls, Batman: The Long Halloween, Batman: The Man Who Laughs, The Killing Joke, Superman: Last Son of Krypton, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, HawkWorld, The Red Hood Trilogy, Death of Superman Trilogy, Superman: Birthright, Earth One: Superman Vol.1, and maybe a couple of pre-New 52 Powergirl GNs. Any good Wonder Woman and Green Lantern graphic novels, or any other GN recommendations I have not listed? -- Batman is probably my favorite DC character, as I grew up with him and he has personally affected my personality. Other favorites would have to be Darkseid, Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Kal-El, Karra Zor-L,
  2. As you all probably know, there is going to be a Lego Batman movie released in 2017. This movie is based on the same Batman from The Lego Movie and its has his same voice actor, Will Arnett. According to reports, this movie will ask the question 'Can Batman be happy?' and 'have incredible action scenes.' My question to all of you about this movie is this: What do you want to see come out of it? Like, for example, what other characters would you like to see Batman work with? Robin? Superman? One or more other members of the Justice League? Possibly a villain, like the Joker? Another example would be whether or not you want to see callbacks from the previous Batman movies, comics, and/or TV shows. Or maybe even cameo appearances from characters from The Lego Movie. And what locations you would want to see, and how the story could balance its story with seriousness and humor. Basically, what am asking is what you want to see in this Lego Batman Movie regarding its characters, locations, storyline, and anything else one could think of possibly being in this movie. For me, I would like to see Lego Batman team up with a Lego Robin. I think a lot of humor would come out of that. I also wouldn't mind seeing characters from the Justice League and Lego Movie make cameo appearances or even be supporting characters. I would also say that the Joker could be the main villain, but I wouldn't mind having someone else fill that role to keep things fresh story-wise. And I would really like another Bionicle cameo in it as well.
  3. Blogged because while I wrote it as part of another comment I think it's a sentiment that deserves to stand on its own: Source: What do you want to see in the Lego Batman Movie?
  4. As you may know, LEGO and DC Comics released 22 variant covers for their comics in November to promote LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. I, of course, had to have some of these for my collection! Here's what I was able to snag: (^Link. Also: Flickr.) Some of these are gracing my collection (and will look great when/if I frame some favorite covers), some are being donated to the BrickFair charity auction, and some I'm saving for sale/trade later (or now, PM me). Some of the variant covers paid homage to covers that appeared a few years back: And just to be clear, only these variant covers are LEGO-ized. The contents are the exact same normal art as one would find in the regular cover comic. While variant covers are most certainly an easy gimmick to boost sales and perhaps gain new readers to a title, sometimes the price is right and the cover is cool enough to accept that. (What I won't do it pay way too much for a cover.) LEGO did this with Marvel last year for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and I was able to grab two (donating Wolverine to BrickFair's auction). What's next? I'll continue to collect and build superhero minifigs from all my favorite titles! -CF
  5. This is the re-post of a song-fic I wrote a while back, but which seems to have disappeared. May this second rendition be a source of amusement and inspiration! The Ballad of the Batman A song fic by BZPower.com member X-Ray Down in Gotham City, twixt Metropolis and New York, There was a man who fought for justice, with the stubbornness of a cork. He was called the Batman, and he was always fighting the good fight. Down in Gotham City, evil fears the knight. He swung through the city on lines as strong as steel He met with the police commissioner via this Bat-signal deal. He rode around in a pimped out ride, called the Batmobile it was If you asked him why all this bat-stuff, he’d say, “Just because.” Oh, the Batman is a detective, a tried and true dark knight He fought the mob and won, and with evil he’s always itching for a fight Criminals fear the Batman, who’ll catch them wherever they go From the East End to Hong Kong, from Tricorner to Congo. His squire was Robin, a bright and cheery lad, He needed this charming acrobat to keep from going mad. He was later joined by Batgirl, and then by Nightwing, you know who And Huntress, Catwoman, Oracle, Azrael, and then Spoiler and Batwoman too. The Bat had many allies, but his enemies numbered great From Two-Face to the Joker, the Harlequin of Hate. The Riddler and the Scarecrow, and of course Black Mask And dirty cops like Jim Corrigan and Detective Arnold Flass. Oh, the Batman is a detective, a tried and true dark knight He fought the mob and won, and with evil he’s always itching for a fight Criminals fear the Batman, who’ll catch them wherever they go From the East End to Hong Kong, from Tricorner to Congo. And don’t forget the Penguin, the gentleman of crime Clayface the shape-shifting actor who’d kill you for a dime Bane with his green venom and Poison Ivy with her green vines And Mad Hatter constantly quoting Alice in Wonderland lines. Batman went through many trials, many bouts from over the years A Death in the Family, Knightfall, No Man’s Land, and R.I.P. brought him tears. And let’s not forget the Contagion, Officer Down and War Games These are but a few of those trials, many of which have no names. Oh, the Batman is a detective, a tried and true dark knight He fought the mob and won, and with evil he’s always itching for a fight Criminals fear the Batman, who’ll catch them wherever they go From the East End to Hong Kong, from Tricorner to Congo. The world will always need the Batman, yes, that much is true Whether it’s this Earth or another, like, say, Earth-2. He’s the scourge of all evil, for evil fears the knight And though he patrols the shadows, he’s the greatest guardian of light. Oh, the Batman is a detective, a tried and true dark knight He fought the mob and won, and with evil he’s always itching for a fight Criminals fear the Batman, who’ll catch them wherever they go From the East End to Hong Kong, from Tricorner to Congo. 6. Alright everyone. I decided to enter the Caveat Scriptor contest if only because I'm so psyched for the Lego Movie and needed an outlet for that excitement since there's still TWO WHOLE MONTHS A MONTH OR SO (I'm bad at time) until it comes out. This is my first comedy on BZP (or the first good one, anyway, and hopefully the numerous data losses since my last one mean any others are lost to time). It's also my first attempt at doing one in script form, which, unless I'm missing something, is awfully difficult to format on BZP. But anyway, without further ado, I give you... Primetime Pitch Pres. Business: Good afternoon, all you shareholders, business consultants, and robot goons! I've called this emergency meeting because our dear, good friend the Infomaniac went and said something SUBVERSIVE on his show last night... andgotputtosleep. [Everyone gasps] Pres. Business: But the good news is, that means we now have an OPEN SLOT on PRIMETIME TV! So I want you all to put your thinking caps on and come up with some GREAT IDEAS for how to keep the TV-watching citizens of Bricksburg dumb and happy during the 6 to 7 p.m. timeslot! I'll let this pink thing here beside me start with her pitch. Bizniz Kitty: [startled] Earnings! Dividends! Um... Quarterly reports! Bruce Wayne: Um... "Biznis Kitty"... he's asking for pitches. Bizniz Kitty: Pitches? Like... baseball? Bruce Wayne: Like a pitch. For a TV show Bizniz Kitty: [Gasps and smiles widely] A TV SHOW? [singing] I used to be sad Before I had any friends But now that I do It's always fun without end! Uni! Uni-kiiiiitty! Rainbows and sunshine and friends all around! Uni! Uni-kiiiiitty! Where adventure and sunshine and fun can be found! Uni-Kitty! [Crickets chirping] Bizniz Kitty: So? What did everyone think? Pres. Business: What... what WAS that? Bizniz Kitty: The Uni-Kitty theme song! Bruce Wayne: You have a theme song? Bizniz Kitty: No, Uni-Kitty has a theme song! I'm Biznis Kitty! Stocks! Bonds! Pres. Business: Okay... so what happens in Uni-Kitty's TV show! Bizniz Kitty: Weren't you listening to the song? She has adventures and fun with friends! She grows wings and turns into a Uni-Kitty princess! Pres. Business: I don't remember that part of the song. Bizniz Kitty: And it doesn't just teach valuable lessons about the importance of friendship, either! It's advertising! Pres. Business: ...Advertising. Bizniz Kitty: That's right! As soon as the show starts airing, Octan Industries has to start selling TOYS! Pres. Business: ...Toys. Biznis Kitty: TOYS! Uni-kitty action figures! Uni-kitty accessories! Uni-kitty playsets and picture books and puzzles! Pres. Business: Look, Ms. Kitty. I can talk to the children's producers about your show. But right now I'm talking about PRIMETIME. We can't have a show for little girls occupying our number one timeslot! Biznis Kitty: But it's NOT just for little girls! It's for little boys, too! It's for moms and dads and secretly-obsessed college students! Pres. Business: You... you really think all those people would tune in to that? Biznis Kitty: I sure do! You want numbers? I got numbers! 97! 150! 224! Pres. Business: That... that sounds revolutionary. Biznis Kitty: I know, riiiiight? Pres. Business: Too revolutionary. I hate it. [biznis Kitty's face falls.] Pres. Business: Next up we have Bruce, my main man! Bruce! Surely you have an idea that's... not that last one? Bruce Wayne: Yeah, I have an idea. Pres. Business: Well don't just leave me hanging! Shoot! Bruce Wayne: Okay, so here's the pitch. An eight-year-old child, returning from the movies with his parents, sees his parents taken apart RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. Pres. Business: Ooh, dark. Keep going! Bruce Wayne: To avenge his parent's deaths, he trains his body and mind and as an adult, starts fighting crime in the dead of night DRESSED AS A BAT. He uses all sorts of high-tech gadgets and vehicles and his own keen detective skills to hold all sorts of insane criminals at bay. Pres. Business: I love it! Especially the anti-crime message. That'll do great at keeping the citizens in line! One thing though... Bruce Wayne: What? Pres. Business: He needs a name. The crime fighter, I mean. Bruce Wayne: Oh, uh...? Pres. Business: Oh! I've got an idea! So he's like some sort of warrior or knight, right? Bruce Wayne: Um... yes. A Dark Knight. Pres. Business: And he rides around in a cool car? Bruce Wayne: ...Yes. A sort of a... bat... mobile. Pres. Business: So here's what I was thinking. How about... drumroll, please... KNIGHT RIDER? Its dark, edgy, and if I might say, super catchy. Biznis Kitty: I like that one! Bruce Wayne: Actually... um... Pres. Business: But what about when he's not fighting crime? He needs a name that's easy to relate to. Bruce Wayne: Um... Mr. President Business, sir? Pres. Business: How about this? Clark—pause for dramatic effect—Kent! [Everyone except Bruce Wayne cheers] Bruce Wayne: You know what? Actually, sir... I'm withdrawing my pitch. It wasn't even all that good. Pres. Business: Aw, say it ain't so, Bruce! Bruce Wayne: [Holding back tears] I've gotta go... got... something in my eye. C'mon Biznis Kitty. [bruce Wayne and Biznis Kitty leave] Pres. Business: Well. That was disappointing. And those two were my best idea people. Why must replacing all your underlings with imaginationless robots backfire so?! Executron: SIR, I HAVE AN IDEA. Pres. Business: You do? I didn't think that was possible! What is it? Executron: PROCESSING... Pres. Business: C'mon! Executron: PROCESSING... IDEA #1: PEOPLE WEARING PANTS Pres. Business: Seriously? THAT'S your miraculous idea? Everyone wears pants! When you get right down to it, EVERY PROGRAM ON TV is about people wearing pants! Idea REJECTED. Executron: SIR, I HAVE ANOTHER IDEA. Pres. Business: Oh, so you're suddenly a fountain of inspiration. What is it this time? Executron: PROCESSING... PROCESSING... IDEA #2: PEOPLE NOT WEARING PANTS. Pres. Business: [stares in awe] People... not wearing pants... COMMERCIAL: Tune in to Octan TV tomorrow to catch the premiere of Where Are My Pants? Follow one hapless man's awkward quest to find out just where his pants went! Catch it at 6 p.m. every night of the week... oryou'llbeputtosleep.
  7. I have a handful of favorite comic book artists: Chris Bachalo, Stuart Immonen (those All-New X-Men covers, am I right?), Dave McKean, and recently Jae Lee in Batman/Superman (apologies to Jack Kirby, though I'll soon read some FF comics drawn by him), but none of them have drawn my #1 favorite cover ever. See, now and then a comic might get published with a blank variant cover made from hard stock paper, the purpose being for commissions, presumably from a well-known comic artist visiting a convention (or your 2-year-old who likes Batman). I took a slightly less orthodox approach and handed my comic over to a friend. Don't take this notion lightly. This was a paid commission (in various terms), but it was worth every penny. And, while everything comes with a price, I'm sure she'll be up for earning a bit of cash for commissions if you just drop her a PM. Without further ado, this is the lovely Lady Kopaka's fantastic, wonderful, too-good-for-words-like-those-raptors drawing of Batman and Superman on Batman/Superman #1, N52, published in June. I especially like how the capes flow with their length. And the backgrounds for each character. And the attention to detail, like Clark's t-shirt instead of his suit since that's what he has in this issue. Now I just gotta figure out how to frame this! -CF (Seriously though, send her a PM and see if she has the time for commissions. She likes making money off of her talent.)
  8. Whatever Happened to the Agent of the Bat? A Short Story Fan Fiction by BZPower.com member X-Ray Detective Harvey Bullock chomped on his cigar, as he navigated the halls of the Kane County Medical Examiner’s Office. He had been called to this location in order to examine a body that had been found on the streets following the zombie attack that some were calling the “Blackest Night.” A costumed body. His partner, Detective Josie Mac, walked beside him. As members of the GCPD Major Crimes Unit, it was their job to investigate cases involving the local freaks. Wonder who this one was, thought the detective. Couldn’t make heads or tails of who it was over the phone, so we had to come all the way down here to make the ID. Let’s hope we have an easy time of it without having to call in the Bat. “Hello, detectives,” said a woman in a white lab coat who came to greet them. “How may I assist you?” “Hello, Ms. Fields,” said Josie. She eyed the woman’s plastic left hand. The Joker had shot it off a few years ago around Christmas. Before that, her husband, Detective Charlie Fields, had been killed by Mr. Freeze. But through it all, Nora Fields had endured. She was currently one of the top supervisors at the Medical Examiner’s office, working with Mortimer Gunt on the toughest forensic cases. “You must be Detective Bullock,” said Fields, extending her hand to shake Bullock’s. “Marcus has told me so much about you.” “You’re a friend of Driver’s?” said Bullock, taking out his cigar. “Any friend of Marcus’ is a friend of mine, ma’am. Anyhow, we’re here to see a stiff. One of the costumed ones recovered after the zombie attack.” “Yes, of course,” said Fields, leading the way down the hall. They came to the morgue, entering the dank, cold repository of human bodies. “Over here,” she said, leading the way to one of the body vaults. She took the keys and unlocked it, taking out the slab on which the body rested. “Well, what do you think?” “Hmm… let’s see,” said Bullock, examining the blackened, skeletonized corpse. It had the symbol of the Black Lantern Corps emblazoned on its chest, and wore a hooded cape. The cape was torn and shredded, tied roughly around the corpse’s neck. A filthy Black Lantern Corps ring still remained rooted onto the body’s finger. But what Bullock noticed the most were the pair of gauntlets that the corpse wore. Gauntlets that had metal blades sticking out of them. “Josie,” said Bullock. “Get some pictures of this stiff. We’re going to need them when we get back to Central so we can have something to compare it to.” “What are we comparing it to?” said Josie. “Do you think you recognize something?” “I’m not a betting man,” said Bullock, continuing to chomp on his cigar, “but I have a hunch that we just found the body of Azrael.” “But Azrael is still alive,” said Josie, frowning. “You and I just closed a case pinning him for the murder of an undercover guy a few months ago.” “No, not that Azrael,” said Bullock. “I mean the old Azrael.” He turned to Fields, and said to her, “Have you been able to identify who the stiff was?” “Dental records indicate that the deceased is Jean-Paul Valley,” said Fields. “Do you think that he was Azrael?” “I don’t know,” said Bullock, turning to leave the morgue. “But I’m gonna find out. Let’s get back to Central, Josie.” * * * “You’re absolutely sure?” “Yes, Batman,” said Commissioner Gordon. He paced the roof, matching Batman’s own striding. The nearby bat-signal illuminated the shadowed night, projecting the image of a bat into the sky above them. “From what we’ve been able to understand, Jean-Paul Valley was a grad student turned drifter, briefly employed as a security guard at Wayne Enterprises.” Gordon stopped, and stared at Batman. “But you already knew that, didn’t you?” Batman replied, “Yes, I did. Jean-Paul was a colleague of mine, and a friend. He made his share of mistakes when he took over as Batman, but he spent the rest of his life trying to atone for those mistakes. Now that we have a body, he deserves a proper burial. Also, he was hardly a ‘drifter.’ Traveler maybe, but not a drifter.” Gordon took out his pipe, and breathed out a puff of smoke. “Wayne knew him, right?” “Right. Your point, Jim?” “Oh, nothing,” said Gordon, going to turn off the bat-signal. “I suppose I’ll have the body delivered into Wayne’s custody. He appears to be the only relation the guy had.” Gordon turned around, seeing Batman standing silently behind him. As he shut off the bat-signal, he said to him, “Say hi to the kid for me.” “I will,” said Batman. With that, he turned, fired his grapnel gun, got a latch, and swung off into the night. Gordon watched as the superhero swung away. He’s a different man now, he thought. Ever since he came back… He walked back to the roof access. Ah, what do I know, the Commissioner thought. Just as well that he’s here at all. * * * Batman steadily parked the Batmobile in the usual spot in the Bat bunker under Wayne Tower. “Car door,” he said. The door opened, and he stepped out. Taking off his mask, he went over to the Batcomputer, and sat down. As he began his work, Alfred came up to him, carrying a tray. “Care for dinner, Master Dick? It’s chili.” “Sure, Alfred,” said Dick Grayson. He pulled up the file on Jean-Paul Valley, studying it intently. As Alfred looked over Dick’s shoulder, the faithful butler said, “Why the sudden interest in the late Jean-Paul Valley?” “His body was found by the police,” said Dick, scrolling down to the bottom of the file. “When Jean-Paul died, no body was found, and we were caught up in the midst of the Hush fiasco when it happened. I intend to make sure that he gets a proper burial.” “A noble proposition, Master Dick,” said Alfred, setting down the tray. “Who will attend?” “All the usual suspects,” said Dick, arriving at the “Known Associates” section of the file. “Tim, Barbara, Cass if you can find her, Leslie. There’s also this one guy… Brian Bryan. I think he’s still working out of this homeless shelter in the East End. And Helena and Selina too.” “What about Stephanie and Damian?” said Alfred. “I believe their attendance would serve to enrich them in the history of the Bat-family.” “Yeah, they’d better come too,” said Dick, closing the file. He turned in his swivel chair, scooting it over to where the chili was. “You’re right, Alfie. It will be good for them.” * * * A few days later, the Bat-family had met in the Wayne Manor graveyard. In attendance were Dick, Tim Drake, Barbara Gordon, Cassandra Cain, Alfred Pennyworth, Damian Wayne, Stephanie Brown, Helena Bertinelli, Selina Kyle, Leslie Thompkins, and Brian Bryan. Dick went up to the front of the group. “Welcome, everybody," he said. "We are gathered here today to put to rest Jean-Paul Valley, better known to most of you as the first Azrael. His body was found in the midst of the Blackest Night, and now we can have a proper burial for him.” He scanned the crowd, trying his best to read their faces. He knew that some of them, namely Selina, Stephanie, and Damian, had little to no history with Jean-Paul. The others, on the other hand, had known Jean-Paul for nearly his whole time as an active member of the Bat-family, fighting alongside him through No Man’s Land and beyond. “We didn’t always give him the credit he deserved,” said Dick, “but he always tried to do the right thing, no matter what.” Dick paused, and then said, “Is there anyone who would like to say something?” A silence washed over the group, as they pondered Dick’s question. Finally, Cassandra came forward, saying, “I would speak.” Dick relinquished his spot in front of the group to Cassandra, joining the rest of the group. She cleared her throat, and began to speak, saying, “Jean-Paul and I met each other during No Man’s Land. He befriended me, and I him, during the winter months of that period. He used to talk a lot, though I at the time spoke little. He saved my life on one occasion. Jean-Paul was many things. He was a warrior, a scholar, and a hero. But above all, Jean-Paul was a good friend. That’s how I would like him to be remembered.” A single tear fell down Cassandra’s face as she rejoined the group. Others came up to speak, first Brian, then Tim, then Barbara, and finally, Dick. After they had all spoken, Dick directed the waiting undertakers to lower the coffin into the grave. It’s a full coffin now, he thought ruefully. He noted that Barbara, Brian, and Leslie were also crying. He thought, Jean-Paul, you weren’t able to touch many lives when you were alive, but those that you did, you touched heavily. He went over to Cassandra Cain, patted her on the shoulder, and said to her, “That was a good speech back there.” “Thanks, Dick,” said Cassandra, looking over her shoulder. “You were right, you know. Jean-Paul did deserve more credit. I wish I’d been there for him when he died.” “If you’d been there for him,” said Dick, “I have no doubt that he would have survived. You could take down the B-listers that killed him, easy money.” Dick hugged Cassandra, and said, “But you weren’t there. What’s done is done.” Cassandra nodded, wiping away her tears with her hand. Then she said, “So, what’s this I hear about a new Azrael in town?” “Michael Lane? The guy’s a total whackjob. But it’s not his fault though. He needs help from us.” “Kind of like Jean-Paul?” “Yes. Kind of like Jean-Paul.” --- Yeah, so I'm a fan of Jean-Paul Valley's Azrael. I love that guy. Comments and criticism appreciated. X-Ray

  11. Alright, so I just got out of the midnight showing of the newest and last of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies. And boy, was it a doozy. And by "doozy" I mean a metric ton of awesome. I'll refrain from posting or mentioning any spoilers just yet, since the majority of people won't see it until tomorrow anyway, but...Discuss!
  12. so, given my name is a superhero movie, i figured i'd do some reviews. let's start from earliest to latest, mkay? (fun fact: i went to the midnight premiere of all of these. another fun fact: i will use the highest level of grammar i possibly can in these reviews, excuse me if i slip up) any italicized sentences are usually my one-line reviews i put up on rotten tomatoes, in case you were wondering. also, i loved spider-man more than any of them, no matter what my rating says. The Avengers (rating: A, 4.5/5) Let's start this review by saying one thing: there was only one thing wrong with The Avengers. That was Hulk's pulsing, glowing green eyes. They weren't there! There were two scenes that really, really needed them to complete the feeling of the Hulk in that movie. One was when he turned around mid-transformation to the Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson's character, and when he said one of the best lines in the movie: "That's my secret, Captain: I'm always angry." Hands down, that was one of my favorite scenes, but I would've felt more "Oh s@&t, the Hulk's coming" if his eyes just turned. And don't get me wrong, his eyes were green, but they were a dark green. Almost like how our brown eyes look like black dots sometimes, the Hulk's eyes just weren't prominent, and that's one thing I loved about 2008's The Incredible Hulk and one thing I would've loved to see in The Avengers. Well, also, they didn't mention Cobie Smulders's character's name once. At least I knew it was Maria Hill before I went into the movie. Now, other that, I thought the movie was PERFECT. Robert Downey, Jr. brought the wittiness and the sarcasm his Tony Stark had in the previous two films, Scarlett Johansson was arguably hotter in this one than in Iron Man 2, (though no matter how gorgeous she is, I feel they should've cast someone else as Natasha. Anyone else?) Chris Hemsworth, while relatively unknown before Thor, actually did a good job fighting the Hulk, (I was HOPING for that as I went in. I grew up watching the Bixby series.) and Mark Ruffalo was a perfect Bruce Banner. His mannerisms, such as rubbing together his hands, his constant signs of paranoia like looking around nervously, it just made me feel more for the character. He's a fugitive and a beast, and he has no idea the next time he'll lose control. Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye was different, yet acceptable. Good actor, and he did a good job as the master archer. However, I want to talk about Chris Evans's character, Captain America. Very different from the Captain America in 2011's film The First Avenger, but yet the same. He's still willing to sacrifice himself before others, he wants to go down with a fight. Very... altruistic. But he's also different. He's in a different world, one he's not used to. Everyone he's loved or cared about has been long dead. I feel like we see a darker version of him, one that's not as accepting as he used to be. And, in comparison with Fantastic Four 1 & 2 (ugh), he did a great job conveying that. He's a better Captain America than Johnny Storm. The fight scenes were great. Loved the beginning Captain America vs. Loki, loved Iron Man/Thor/Captain America three-way fight, loved the Avengers beating the bajesus out of the Chitauri, and my FAVORITE will be Hulk vs. Thor, just because I had that sense of nostalgia and childhood shoot up through me. Plus, Joss Whedon directed this film, and I admire his works. He turned a comedy about a cheerleader that hunts the supernatural into an awesome show and he made one of my favorites, Firefly. (Nathan Fillion, by the way, is one of my picks for the upcoming Ant-Man film, but Fillion doesn't want to do it.) So I tip my metaphorical hat to you, Mr. Whedon. Overall, The Avengers is a fantastic superhero film that utilizes the abilities of their fantastic list of actors and isn't ever trumped by the music or the usual loud, obscene sounds that dominate most superhero movies. But please, don't mention Coulson. The Amazing Spider-Man (rating: B+, 4.5/5) When they first announced the cancellation and reboot of my favorite superhero, I was surprised. I had mixed feelings about it. I was simultaneously ###### off, and yet intrigued. I began trying to form ideas of what their plot would be, to the extent of writing my own script. A year later, they announced the villain and the first shot of the suit, and I got mad. I hated the suit. What I hated more, however, were the fan "gossip", I guess you could call it. "There's a lack of dirt around his hips, maybe he's wearing a belt" was the one that made me the most angry. Then a month later we got a shot with the mask on, and I had some anger repressed. I thought the eyes looked like the dot shading they did for comics back then, the common way of doing shadows. Then trailers, posters, featurettes, TV spots, all were being released and my hope for this movie just built up and up and finally, when the night of July 2nd came and I had gotten out of work, I was stoked. And I couldn't have asked for a better night. A movie, however, yeah. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED this film. LOVED. My favorite film this summer. Only because Spider-Man was in it, though. The Amazing Spider-Man started with an intro similar to the Raimi films, and I had that feeling of nostalgia. I also had the feeling of ripping off, not so much "homage". However, as the beginning sequence went on, I started to just forget that there were 3 other films and I grew to accept that this was a stand-alone film, and that made this a better film for me. The parents of Peter, whom we've never seen, having something suspicious hidden that was worth breaking into. Peter Parker, a smart guy, but he's an outcast and he's grown to want to rebel against the world around him. He doesn't like to talk to people, he just grows away from them and his wanting to go against the machine just expands. He generally has a good heart, though. In one scene, Flash Thompson is bullying a kid by shoving his face in his food. Peter stops him, (though he has to go to extents by using Flash's real name, Eugene) and then he goes over to see if the kid is okay. Well, before being punched in the face by Flash. But I thought that showed that his heart was in the right direction, he just needed a push. That push actually came in two parts: the spider bite, and Uncle Ben's untimely death. There were actually multiple pushes in this movie. His parents, the spider bite, Uncle Ben, Captain Stacy, etc. The one that starts the chain of dominoes, however, is actually a flood in the basement. Peter finds his father's old book bag as he's moving stuff out of the flooding basement, and finds out about Dr. Connors. In a rather humorous scene, he "borrows" the identity of an Oscorp intern and goes to meet Dr. Connors. (One thing I like about this scene is that he passes by a 3d hologram of Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, who is silhouetted. For some reason, the hologram reminded me of Kevin Bacon.) The scene where Peter talks about the theory of cross-species genetics was a little way of showing his intellect, and the talk between him and Gwen Stacy, portrayed by the lovely Emma Stone, was nice, ("I would say that I work here, but you actually work here, so you know for a fact that I don't actually work here.") but the thing that I was anxiously waiting for was the spider bite. The bite that makes Peter who he is, the amazing, spectacular, sensational and astonishing Spider-Man. But to my surprise, it didn't happen the way it did in the trailer. And as the movie went on, I realized a lot of things didn't happen like they did in the trailer. Some scenes were cut, too. Earlier in the film, when Peter investigates his father's bag, he finds a file with an equation labeled the 00 Decay Rate Algorithm. (I liked this nod to the Ultimate comics, where the spider that bit Peter was designated #00 because of the numbers on it's back) Well, upon observing Dr. Rajit Ratha, Connors and his father's superior, he breaks into the 00 testing lab, where he finds Oscorp-branded biocable, (which he later uses to make his webbing) and it's testing in manufactured spiders. Upon plucking the strands of biocable, he causes a brief shutdown and all the company-bred spiders land on Peter, one hiding in his collar. Upon leaving, the spider bites him, and he experiences his first encounter with his powers on the subway, after sticking to a ceiling and ripping a woman's shirt off. I liked Andrew Garfield's mannerisms as Peter, especially after he gets bit, such as him catching the fly and eyeing it as if it were a snack, or how some things bother him. Smashing his alarm clock was one of my favorites. They managed to pull off Ben's death without the wrestling arena well, but I felt Raimi's Spider-Man had a more emotional way with Peter and Uncle Ben. Peter uses his abilities to try and find Ben's killer, but after his suspect (which turns out NOT to be Ben's murderer) screams, "I saw your face!", Peter gets the idea for a mask. He also crashes into a lucha libre arena, and sees a giant mask that gives him the concept for the final mask. Then he's sitting upside down in his room making his costume, using old watches to make new web shooters, he's doing all these things to improve his vigilantism. One thing I liked about this one is that it actually shows him making his costume. He's sewing his prototype mask, he's painting the spider on the back of his suit, he's using sunglasses to make lenses on his mask. Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man just drew pictures of his suit, and drawing is a lot easier than doing. James Horner's score gave this triumphant burst of music when Spidey first stands on a building in his final costume during the sunset, and then he's off again to catch Uncle Ben's killer. However, a visit to Gwen's house gives him the sad realization that he's chasing the same guy and actually not helping people at all. Then romance, with okay dialogue but Emma and Andrew try to make the best of it, and then a WAY-TOO-SOON identity reveal. Then Peter is off. During this film, Ratha is pressuring Connors to make this serum to cure Norman Osborn, who is dying of a terminal illness. (Which springs so many theories! My main one is that Norman is cured, but it leaves him with dual personalities, creating a case like the Sam Raimi films where Norman wants to do right but he's overpowered by his second personality- the Goblin. My second theory is that he turns into a beast like the Ultimate comics.) However, with Ratha rushing due dates, he fires Connors and plans on testing the serum on veteran's under the guise of flu shots. Well Connors can't let that happen, so he takes the serum himself... and regrows his right arm! Hallelujah! But on the down side, he turns into a giant lizard and he does the only good thing in the entire film, and that's stopping Ratha from turning a bunch of veterans into giant lizards as well. Buuuuut he's still flinging cars off bridges, so Spider-Man has to go and intervene. After Connors starts changing back and leaves the incident, and Spider-Man saves a kid, the father asks "Who are you?" And in arguably the best line of the film, Peter announces the one thing I've been waiting to hear. "I'm Spider-Man." And that is when I fist pumped in the theater and smiled like a fool. This review is getting more of a plot summary, so I'll just try to sum up the rest of the film. Spidey gets an arrest warrant on his head. He also goes down into the sewers to encounter the Lizard head-on. In a clever way, he sets up a web trap, where he connects strands to tunnels so any movements in those tunnels would create vibrations, which would lead back to him. He fights the Lizard and somehow finds out who he is, and vice versa. He tries to tell Captain Stacy that Godzilla is ambushing NYC, which Captain Stacy thinks is stupid but asks others to get info on Connors anyways. Earlier in the film, Peter points out the Ganali device, which Connors describes as creating a cloud over a space as large as NYC, but Oscorp never allowed it because it could be used as a nuclear device, or a way of declaring biological war. So Connor figures, "Hey, Ratha was kinda right. Being a lizard is awesome, so everyone should experience it!" So after a brief debacle between him and Spider-Man at Midtown High (excuse me, Midtown SCIENCE High- which is weird), eventually ending with Spider-Man winning in an awesome way by webbing Connors up in a cocoon, he goes back down to the sewers, takes a higher dosage of the Lizard serum so he can be a giant lizard longer, and plans on stealing the Ganali device to turn everyone into a lizard. Peter follows him (maskless, for some strange reason) and calls Gwen to go to Oscorp and find the file on the lizard cure. (How he knows about this is also weird. It also made me realize that 12389, the file number, is a weird number.) He then goes back to the surface, is ambushed by Captain Stacy, beats the living ###### out of his squad, but couldn't bother to web his face and swing away. Nope, instead he turns around, reveals his identity, and gets shot in the leg. You could've gone when they were all unconscious, Spidey! But the scene was done for 1.) more ways to throw his identity about and 2.) to establish trust between Capt. Stacy and Peter. The Lizard gives a SWAT team a dose of his lovely lizard serum in a gaseous form, then breaks into Oscorp, finds a hiding Gwen with the Ganali device, doesn't bother to hurt Gwen, (because why would you hurt Emma Stone? <3) and then sets it up with the lizard serum. All while Gwen is making the antidote. Wow. So, anyways, Peter webs up his leg and, in a kind of Olympic matter where he's standing alone, there's a spot light on him, the father from earlier moving cranes on a path to Oscorp, he swings and... misses. BUT THEN HE CATCHES SOME BUILDING MATERIALS BEING PULLED UP, and he resumes swinging to Oscorp, where he fights the Lizard. The Lizard breaks his web shooters and rips off his mask, and claims Peter is all alone, before Captain Stacy shows up with a shotgun and starts shooting the Lizard. Peter knocks him into a pit full of liquid nitrogen tanks and he freezes the Lizard. Stacy shoots him a couple times, but the Lizard regenerates and kills Captain Stacy. (NOOOOOOOOO DENIS LEARY) One of the hoses freezes the bottom of the antenna- the one the Ganali device is on. Peter is trying to switch out the serum for the antidote, but the Lizard grabs his leg and, with seconds before New York City is New Lizard City, he switches it successfully. The cloud cures the SWAT team and Connors, but doesn't save Denis Leary. Peter falls and Connors catches him and watches as his arm falls to pieces and blows away in the dust. Captain Stacy makes Peter stay away from Gwen, and then he dies. Peter stands on the edge of Oscorp, looking out on the city and he sighs. Probably thinking, "What a day." Obviously, he doesn't stay away from Gwen and he does this awesome ending swing which involves him shooting out of a crane and about to shoot a web while he's against a very bright moon and doves fly out behind him. It's my iPhone wallpaper. In an mid-credits scene, a man asks Connors if he told the truth about Peter's dad, to which Connors says no and screams he should leave Peter alone, to which this man just disappears. They confirmed it wasn't Norman, so Electro? There were a lot of plot holes in this film and a lot in the trailer we didn't see in the movie. There were some inconsistencies, too. (How does Peter have the same prescription that his dad had? How did he get a box of biocable unnoticed? Why does his suit have more damage coming out of the sewers than it did going in? Where does Dr. Ratha go after the bridge scene?) This made me upset. But, because it's Spider-Man, I had to push that aside and love what I did see, and that was a good movie. Also, I loved the score. It gets stuck in my head, just like The Avengers score and the original Danny Elfman score. Overall, aside from obvious scene cuts and the resulting plot holes, The Amazing Spider-Man is a self-explanatory film that has an enjoyable cast and a intense plot, and it leaves you wanting more after the end. The Dark Knight Rises (rating: A-, 4.5/5) Coming soon. I'm too lazy to write this review.
  13. Christopher Nolan delivers, again. I could not have asked for such a great conclusion to this trilogy. Much in the same way he captured Joker, Catwoman and Bane lose much of their ridiculousness from the comics to give us much more realistic and gritty characters. Anne Hathaway, in my opinion, did an excellent job convincing me that she holds no allegiances to anyone but herself. Tom Hardy played a great Bane, even if he didn't get to shine much as an actor. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is quickly becoming a favorite actor of mine. Is it better than the Avengers? I couldn't say for sure, but it is certainly a great movie for completely different reasons. Once more people see it we get to talk about those sweet, sweet SPOILERS!
  14. Yeah, I was right there looking at it. Trying to figure out how it could, somehow, get to the highway and to my house... Back angles. It's currently on tour across the States. It'll be in Baltimore, Maryland, today, Memorial Day. But there will probably be a bigger crowd than today at the National Harbor because there's a sci-fi/fantasy convention concluding. B) -CF

  16. Recently in the BZPRPG, we discovered that Makuta has had two unknown articles stolen from him. The following paragraphs are a collection of my thoughts and deductions on the identity of the artifacts and also the identity of Makuta. This may be vaguely interesting to any BZPRPG player, and may also come in handy when trying to solve the staff plot. *** What is it that Makuta wants back? We have a two clues: One: there are six that were stolen, but Makuta possesses more than six. Two: these six are more valuable than the others of their kind; they are, as Makuta says, special. We can also inference a few things: judging from Makuta's anger, these unknown artifacts are extremely precious to him. Why? From what we know of Makuta (which is, admittedly, very little), he is a being of shadow and malice. What qualities give something value in his eyes? If we take what we know of Makuta, it's likely that power is an attractive quality to him. He likes having power over Mata Nui and watching its inhabitants scurry around in vain quests to defeat him. I hypothesize that these artifacts are either a) a source of his power, or 2) a source of power than can be used against him. Nothing else is likely to incur such anger on his part. Now, let's backtrack briefly. We can all agree that Makuta likes power, yes? We can draw this conclusion from this fact: Makuta wants to have dominion over Mata Nui. He threatens the villages with Rahi, and he took the island's most powerful heroes so they would no pose a threat to his dominion. If Makuta didn't care about ruling Mata Nui, he wouldn't infect Rahi and he wouldn't have done anything to the Toa Mata when they confronted him. In addition to this, Makuta's treatment of Heuani suggests that he enjoys oppressing others from his position of power. So if Makuta likes feeling powerful, then why would he lock something in a vault? If you are invincible and all-powerful, you don't have vaults. Vaults are for people not powerful or intimidating enough to protect what is valuable to them. But Makuta, the most powerful, intimidating villain of them all, locks these unknown artifacts in a vault because, despite his power, he cannot risk them being stolen. Think about it: the Makuta, the lord of darkness, shadow, and fear, is afraid. So what does Makuta have to be afraid of? From what we know of him, he wants to rule Mata Nui. Therefore, his fear most likely has something to do with losing his dominion. But wait! How could this happen? The Toa Mata, explicitly named as the six most powerful Toa the island has ever seen, were unable to conquer Makuta. So Makuta has no reason to be afraid, right? If those six legendary heroes couldn't take him down, then why would he possibly be concerned about our chances? Because these artifacts, as I hypothesized earlier, are either a) a source of his power, or 2) a source of power than can be used against him. If Makuta loses these artifacts, either he will lose enough of his power to be defeated, or those who find the artifacts will gain enough power to overthrow him. What could grant this type of power? Golden Kanohi and Toa Stones have already been mentioned, so I'll take a look at them. First: golden Kanohi. The Toa Mata, more powerful than any PC Toa, had golden Kanohi, and Makuta defeated them with ease. So there's no reason for him to be worried us getting the Kanohi, because if the Toa Mata didn't stand a chance with them, then how would we? Second: Toa Stones. Makuta has nothing to fear from regular Toa Stones, but, as he stated, these unknown artifacts are special. If Makuta has lost six abnormally powerful Toa Stones, then that might be something that would cause him some concern. If we assume that these artifacts are Toa Stones, then Makuta's first concern will be to recover the Stones, and if that fails, his second strategy will most likely be to eliminate any Matoran that could use a Stone to become a super-Toa. What has Makuta's only measurable action been prior to the release of the Rahkshi? He's ordered the elimination of the Chroniclers Company, the bravest, most likely candidates for Toa. This means that, should we gain possession of a Stone, we'll need to find a PC Matoran eligible to become a Toa. There are two things that Friar Tuck has said in the past that are extremely relevant now: only Matoran that are roleplayed exceptionally well will be allowed to turn into Toa, and the Staff quest will put your characters in mortal danger. If player A is roleplaying a Matoran well enough to become a Toa, and he's involved in the Staff quest, then Makuta's first action is going to be to try and eliminate that Matoran. These last two paragraphs are only applicable if the unknown artifacts are, in fact, Toa Stones, but the rest of my post should be taken into consideration when guessing at the identity of the artifacts stolen from Makuta. What else do we know of that can grant enough power to put fear in the heart of the Master of fear?
  17. Kyara has returned. For those of you who did not participate in the BZPRPG last year, Kyara is perhaps the most fantastically cunning and swift Toa in the BZPRPG. Or not. But she's still pretty cool. Post here for interactions with Ketan or Kyara (wow two names that start with a K I just noticed that holy hau), or to participate in any BZPRPG discussion.

  21. So this game came out last week, and I've been playing it non-stop. Anyone else have it? I personally thought it was outstanding. The story was really good, (all the trouble Batman had to go through ) and the actual fighting aspect of it was pretty fun, especially because you could upgrade your moves. I went from punching guys with blades to taking their blade and smashing them in the face with it. So please, discuss the game here.
