  1. *hate I hate slideshow articles. I don't have slideshow articles. I was trying to make sense of Lyichir's comment in my last post when I noticed my typo. You know, that one typo actually changes the meaning of the whole thing, doesn't it? So now you know, I hate them. Like a lot. Almost as much as I hate Yahoo News, and people who say "theory" when they mean "hypothesis." Anyway, here's the slideshow article formula: 1. Write up some click-bait title, such as "The one celebrity who refused to make a cameo on The Big Bang Theory", or "Arnold Schwarzenegger and daughter confirm rumors". 2. Don't reveal that it's a slideshow article, because otherwise people won't click on it. 3. Instead of answering the question in the title, and giving an actual interesting story behind it, make people shift through approximately twenty-four slides of trivia that has little to do with the title. If it's about the celebrity cameo on the Big Bang Theory, make us go through twenty-four slides about BBT trivia before getting to to last one that says that the celebrity who never cameo-ed was William Shatner. And for the rumors of Arnold Schwartzenegger, go through a big story of his life first, including his stunts as Conan the Barbarian, how he made so much money off of Twins, how he almost played Kyle Reese in The Terminator, and so forth. 4. Quite possibly, never reveal the question raised in the title at all, making the whole thing one big waste of time. 5. You can use this formula on anything, not just pop culture gossip. For example, "Why you should never step on a centipede", and then make someone shift through all sorts of information on why you think that centipedes are fascinating creatures. For example, they have exoskeletons guys! How cool is that? Yeah. Fascinating. I totally share your enthusiasm. < PREV NEXT > 24601
  2. I'm gonna keep this one brief. A full set of mint-condition 2001 Matoran for $64.99. That makes less than $11 a piece. Sweet deal, right? Add $7.50 for shipping to a friend in the States, because the seller doesn't ship overseas. Add $48.00 for shipping to me, because I am not having the affordable service with a 75% success rate in delivery. Still a sweet deal, right? Add a 20% VAT on the entire total at customs, then several small "service" fees for retrieving and releasing my "goods." *grits teeth* Still a sweat deal... right? Update: As it turns out, I had to pay a smaller tax at customs than I'd originally anticipated. Then when I inspected the package closely, I found out it had been marked as a gift, so not only could I have avoided the tax, but it was practically illegal for customs to tax me. In any case, yes, the Tohunga sets are entirely worth it. YOLO.
  3. For the past several years, I've been doing what I could never do as a kid—namely collecting BIONICLE sets, collectibles, pieces and merchandise online. I recently came to a very grim realization that had somehow been eluding me since mid 2011. Shipping overseas (in my case from the US to Bulgaria) without tracking is absolutely unreliable. I went ahead and made an extensive revision of every online purchase I've made from the US since mid 2011 and arrived at the following numbers: 5 US eBay purchases (without tracking) – 5 arrived (4 BIONICLE-related) 6 US BrickLink purchases (without tracking) – 1 arrived (6 BIONICLE-related) 3 US BZP trades/purchases (without tracking) – 2 arrived (3 BIONICLE-related) 1 other US purchase (without tracking) – 1 arrived (0 BIONICLE-related) Which means that out of 15 shipped packages (that I paid for; obviously) only 9 (60%) have arrived. That is absolutely maddening. For every 3 purchases that have arrived to me, 2 have gone missing. Those numbers are insane. I mean look at BrickLink, for goodness' sake—1 out of 6 arrived. Are you kidding me??? I've had packages go missing from other countries as well, but nowhere near as often as from the US. Packages from Germany have occasionally arrived damaged, but almost always arrive without the need for tracking. That goes for almost all of Europe. Now I was almost certain the problem was with Bulgarian Post (a government-owned establishment) and their sloppy service; I'm willing to bet the majority of the packages that never arrived to me are in fact in my own country; although the numbers make me consider whether USPS is doing a good job too or is partly responsible for this gross unreliability. I hate to rant, but this simply isn't fair. Literally the cheapest delivery service in the civilized world should, by default, guarantee that your package will in fact arrive. It doesn't matter how long it takes. Arrival should be a given, not a privilege. When we pay for merchandise and pay to have it shipped, we pay for it to arrive, not just to depart. If I were paying for the latter, I could just as easily have the seller toss it out their window and then keep my fingers crossed it arrives somehow. Not to mention the obvious loss of time, money and valuable merchandise. I don't know about you guys, but even in the very rare cases where I'd gotten a refund, I've still felt extremely cheated, because the items I've (apparently gambled on and) lost have usually been the only ones for sale at the time. For a lost package to hypothetically be compensated, you would need a full refund and the easy opportunity to buy the same item for the same amount from elsewhere. If those circumstances are present, you can get over the time you've lost, but it's never really just the time you lose. You usually lose the time, the money and the ability to obtain the item again. That is literally criminal. Bottom line is, whenever I want to buy something from overseas, I have to choose between either paying a reasonable amount of money for shipping or being guaranteed that my package will in fact arrive. Having both is apparently too much to ask for in the 21st century. To wrap my rant up, I'll just go ahead and post a list of all the items I've lost in the aforementioned purchases (all of which are coincidentally LEGO-related items): 1 Toa Mata US promotional mini CD 1 Interactive Demo CD 1 Throwbots 2000 Fusion poster 7 different marbled silver Rhotuka spinners 1 glow-in-the-dark opaque Rhotuka spinner 1 dark bluish gray Rhotuka spinner 1 pearl light gray Toa Mata head 9 Kanohi polybags in 3 different colors 1 Kanohi & Krana polybag RIP in the huge magical pile of "lost" packages I guess. BCJ out.
  4. Sadly, the existence of anti-Semites ini the west gives some credibility to unsubstantiated accusations of anti-Semitism in perfectly decent people. Walt Disney is one such person. I'm sure many of you have heard it said that he was an anti-Semite. This myth particularly frustrates me. I have done Disney-inspired art, and even a portrait of Disney himself. I admire him. He's a great role model for me, and he has influenced my philosophy towards life in general, as well as more specific things such as art and business. I love to associate with this man. I even once grew out a mustache and combed my hair the way he did. I love Walt Disney! I don't want to be the slightest bit ashamed to associate with him. Some people think I should be ashamed, though. I drew a portrait of Disney once when I was in high school, and one of my teachers shook his head and said, "Anti-Semite." Because of my affinity for Disney, I have been accused of being complicit with anti-Semitism. At worst, I have been accused of actually being an anti-Semite. All because I love Disney! So let me just get the record straight. First, I'm going to defend myself. I abso-fricki-lutely love Jews. As in, you have no idea. I'm a major semitophile and have gone to Synagogues, talked at length with rabbis, and read Jewish literature extensively. Sometimes I wear a yarmulke when I'm praying. I have dedicated hours and hours to highly meticulous works of Jewish art. So it's completely ridiculous when people look at my art, see that some of it has to do with Disney, and think that I'm anti-Semitic, or even slightly complicit with anti-Semitism. If Disney was anti-Semitic, then yes, I would be very upset by that. However, not only is there no evidence of that, but there is actually evidence to the contrary. He hired many Jews to work for him, more than even many Jewish-run companies in Hollywood at the time. None of the Jews who worked with him felt that he thought less than them. The head of the modeling department, Joe Grant, even noted that "Some of the most influential people in the studio were Jewish." Disney also donated to many Jewish causes. Such as a Jewish orphanage, a Jewish nursing home, a Jewish college, and so forth. Heck, he even donated to some pretty radical Jewish groups! So where does this myth come from? Well, Walt was a pretty conservative guy. He believed in good old-fashioned American values, and he was one of those people who didn't want Communists in Hollywood. He associated with many anti-Communist groups of the day. As it happens, one of them, which had no official anti-Semitic stances, happened to have some members who were rumored to have been anti-Semitic in private. That's like saying that I believe that women should always have only secondary roles in movies, just because Steven Spielberg is my favorite director (outside of BFG, all of his movies star males; I always assumed that it was because he was more comfortable with it, but people have rumored that he's sexist). And there you go: that's all you need to accuse one of the most decent guys ever of being like Hitler. I absolutely hate that character assassination against Walt Disney among people who feel high and mighty for it. What do people possibly stand to benefit from tearing him down like that? I just don't get it. It doesn't make sense to me. Walt Disney is an inspiration and basically the best thing to ever happen to the movie industry. He brought joy and love to children everywhere. He did his best to bring families together. He had many, many ideas for making the world a better place. Nobody should be ashamed of admiring that. 24601
  5. I just need to rant for a bit. So, recently Once Upon a Time (finally) introduced a LGBT+ couple into the show. And the writing for it was lack-luster, but I don't think it was because the couple was LGBT+ but more so that the show's writing has been pretty much awful for a while now. Once is a show I watch with my family. We watched it then and no one made any comments. And to be fair, while it was bad writing, the relationship itself was cute enough and harmless. My biggest gripe is that one episode is not enough to develop a true love relationship fully. Now flash forward to today and someone told me there were people who speculated that in Frozen 2, Elsa should have a woman for a love interest. My response? "Hmm, yeah I could see that." My reasoning being I think Elsa's story, namely how she kept a part of her identity hidden (her ice powers) from everyone including her own sister could be considered parallel with being closeted for an LGBT+ person. And that's not really solid for saying Elsa isn't heterosexual, but personally I think it fits and I would be fine if that's the direction the movie went. Anyway, my response was met with a look of disgust and the phrase "No, not everyone is gay." Hah. Well thank you for that brilliant insight. I will truly need to reflect on that. Boy golly I sure learned a bloody lesson today. That put me in my place. Oh, and by the by; NOT EVERYBODY IS HETEROSEXUAL, BUT NOBODY EVER TOLD THAT TO DISNEY! Number of openly LGBT+ characters in Disney: Zero Number of LGBT+ role models I had growing up so I didn't think I was a freak and gave me even the slightest bit of "don't freak out it will be okay" mentality? Zero. No instead I got a giant parade of heterosexuality trapsing around me, and then when I found out I was gay it all turned to a big deal. So big that my closest family members didn't know I was gay until less than a year ago. Heck, I still worry that I'm going to be a victim of a hate crime. It's not like those LGBT+ kids need any form of support. It's not like the kid with two moms needs to see that their family can be represented as normal. It's not like I needed to feel like a regular human being growing up. But hey "why do we need to expose children to that anyway?" Yeah, it's not like that group is being bullied to death in their youth or anything. And as for the LGBT+ ship in Once? "Yeah, that was just too much for me." And it's not like I have anyone in my family to talk about this stuff with, because if it hasn't become apparent by now in this entry, my family just does not understand anything about this area. A list of every LGBT+ member of my family: me So yeah I kinda hate the world right now. Seriously, screw that place.

  7. Just saw someone in another topic complain about "cheap Chinese plastic" being responsible for certain minifigure parts fluorescing under a blacklight, and it got me in rant mode. But since it'd be wildly off-topic there, I'm posting it here in my blog:
  8. This is a rant. It's about adults. Not adults like me, but adults much older than me who have some life experience and know what they're doing, and thus think nothing of the consequences on my psyche when conversing. Granted, I do know adults who have their life together--solid job, living on their own--but most of my complaints are coming because of even older adults. It's about conversation. And while I definitely dislike small talk, it's unavoidable. And while I'm learning how to ask small-talk-like questions that are actually meaningful, the same usual small talk queries are addressed to me whenever I meet new adults. The questions are simple: "What did you study in college?" and "What do you do?" (The latter meaning jobs and money, not in life in general in your free time. More on that later.) I understand that my answers are in my control. I'm living at home and underemployed. I believe in responsibility and accountability, and I hold myself to my societal shortcomings. Though adults are always kind in talking about the troubled economy and job market. But it falls to me. But what falls to them are the questions. Why ask things that remind me of my shortcomings? I understand it's easy, but even after that topic has been breached it remains the point of conversation. It's not like it's a lead in to other interests. Small talk like this would be so much better if we focused on, say, hobbies. "What do you do?" "Oh, I build LEGO creations and collect comic books." And there is so much conversation to be made going on from there. People are enthusiastic about their passions, and it allows the other person to continually ask questions and show/feign interest. And even if the job question has come up, my working in a bookstore is such a great lead for a deeper conversation about books. Everyone (mostly) reads! What isn't there to talk about in the world of books? Until such ends are met, I will just have to live with my problems, work harder in any job, and steer the conversation into something more favorable. Now, I know I have plenty of friends also living at home and not working in their field of study at school (if they even went to college). And I also have friends that are adulting better than I am either by making enough to move out yet remain underemployed or actually making a career out of their interests and studies. So I ask: What problems has everyone encountered? What have you done until better options came along? What kind of comments have been received; what kind of answers were given? And what is the best way to bear with the unbearable smalltalk? -CF
  9. Is it bad that I think the ‪LEGO Elves are a lot cuter and more interesting as mini-dolls than they would ever have been as classic minifigs? It seems like for a lot of people, the classic minifigure is sacred and untouchable. I disagree. It has some real, meaningful disadvantages. Mini-dolls aren't perfect either, but there's nothing wrong with sometimes or always preferring its advantages (more realistic faces and proportions, less blocky body shape, more detailed outfits) over those of the minifigure. And it bugs me to no end to hear mini-dolls described as anorexic, because it makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. To have minifigure-like body proportions, an average 20– to 29-year-old man in the United States (69.5 inches tall) would need an eighty-inch waistline, and an average adult woman in that age range (64 inches tall) would need a 73-inch waistline. Either way, that's twice the size of a waistline that would put you at high risk for obesity-related diseases. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waist#Waist_measurement). By contrast, people those heights with mini-doll proportions would have healthy 34.5-inch (male) and 32-inch (female) waistlines. Arguably if the minifigure and mini-doll didn't both have such exaggeratedly large heads (probably the most exaggerated feature of both figures), then both figures' waists would be even larger relative to their heights. And yet you don't see anybody complaining that minifigures and mini-dolls alike promote an unhealthy or unrealistic head size...
  10. It was Halloween night, and don't think it's November 7th BECAUSE IT'S NOT OKAY!? Ugh. The doorbell rang at the old, abandoned Mansion. The three Trick-or-Treaters dressed as the Toa nuva shivered at the thought of what was inside, as they heard the wood flooring creak from inside. The door opened, and a suited, tall figure appeared with apparently no head. Screaming, all the trick-or-treaters ran away, dropping their candy. Eventually Tahu got his head out from inside the suit. "Okay, here's your..." "...Candy." GET TO THE HALLOWEEN THING A 2014 HALLOWEEN Let's get this over with. Gali paced through the house, worried. She turned to Onua. "Where is Lewa and the apples? We're expecting the guest soon!" She was dressed as a mummy, all wrapped in toilet paper bandages. Onua, dressed as a zombie, said "He said he was headed to the store to get 30 apples, but that was 3 days ago." Out of the basement came the wizard, with a fake beard and star-covered cloak. "Why did you guys decide to use the duster as the beard? It tastes like mothballs..." Lewa suddenly burst through the door, dressed as a mime. "Hey guys, I got the apples!" Gali saw him and demanded an explanation for being gone three days. Lewa said "I, uh, saw a penny on the sidewalk." Tahu came back inside. He had two LEGO spacers stuck to the sides of his head, to look like bolts. Lewa looked around, and then realized Kopaka was missing. "Hey Kopaka, get down here!" They heard a grumbling and thuds as he came downstairs. Kopaka was a vampire, complete with the entire outfit. His looked the best. "It's hald to tawk trough tese plactic teeth" he complained. Then, Pohatu came in. "Hey guys, I'm the flash!" "But.. Then who..." Everyone looked at the wizard. It was finally time to begin, and everyone was in a costume. The mime was talking to Turaga Dume, who was a werewolf. "Nice job picking the graveyard mansion for the party spot, Turaga!" Lewa said. "We have the punch, the bobbing for apples, and pin the tail on the Kane-ra!" Turaga Vakama got up on a podium and viewed the crowd. "A sight for sore eyes, if you want them" He muttered. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first annual Halloween party, and please enjoy the 'fun' games we have tonight! Now, a word from Kopaka." Kopaka got pushed on stage. "Um, thahnk you for haffing us tonigh, Um, pleathe enyoy thuh sthay, an make thure you enter the raffue ticked prige, uh..." At that moment Onua announced "Bobbing for apples and free punch is now open!" All the Matoran raced to the two games and treats that were open, Kopaka went to the punch stand and punched everybody, while Lewa operated the bobbing for apples game, where everyone jumped in freezing water and tried to bite the apples glued to the ceiling twenty feet above. "The things people will do for fun, right G-Gali!?" Tahu said as Gali headed the kissing booth. Tahu grinned. "Say Gali," he handed her his wallet. "Nice idea." "I liked it." said Gali and, while Tahu had his lips puckered and his eyes closed, Pohatu the flash placed a pumpkin pie instead of Gali. Tahu angrily spat out pie crust and swiped his wallet back, while Gali stood there laughing. While this was going on, Takua arrived late. He scrambled to the door as he was deathly afraid of graveyards, when he thought he heard a tombstone fall over. He rushed inside, and slammed the door. And in the darkness, Tahu watched. The party was going great. Kopaka punching people, Tahu repeatedly trying to kis Gali without getting pied, Lewa freezing Matoran in the impossible-to-win game, Onua running the strength test, and Vakama talking into the microphone while no-one wished to hear him. Onua saw when Matoran swung the hammer, they averaged out at about 30 pounds of force, except for that old lady, who averaged out at about 963.6 tons of force. Takua noticed drool on the outside of one of the windows. Looking closely at it, he was suddenly surprised by a hideous Tahu face. He, naturally, screamed. All the hall echoed his girly noise, and every one said at the same time: WHAT IS IT NOW TAKUA!? It's... It's... It's Tahu! Kopaka looked at Tahu and said "I thaid taht costhume look hineous." Tahu frowned, and suddenly the window shattered. In barrel-rolled an odd, hideous amalgamation of Tahu. He was tall, wore gold armour, and had a mask like a rotting pumpkin. Gali leaned over. "He's more muscular than you, at least." she whispered. Tahu growled, and was about to strike when the door burst open. The rest of the Toa monsters were there. The version of Onua yawned, and said sleepily "For Emiku! attack!" All chaos broke loose. Well, not all of it, but you get the hint. Tahu took on his doppleganger, and each Toa theirs as well. He swung his fire sword at it, and it completely took the hit with no damage. Confused, Tahu accidentally left himself wide open for a backhand from his pastry-faced lookalike. Kopaka's archenemy (just declared as so) swung frantically at the valiant ice vampire. He had little sence of balance, though, so he swung around 'till he fell over, and rammed his head into the strength. It was the old lady's turn, and she didn't like line cutters. "Get out of the way, sonny!" and she flung him out through the side window and into the distance. Kopaka grinned, and slowly inched away... Onua's opponent just collapsed after the first attack and went to sleep. Onua took the chance to talk to Vakama and Dume. "What the heck are these things?" Dume spoke up. "It is as we feared..." "Many years ago, Turaga Matau had a vision concerning the year 2015. He saw these monstrosities hailing from the island of Okoto in the Emiku universe. An alternate dimension that fights against lame spiders and protects floppy protectors. But I know how to deal with it." Reaching into his bag, he pulled out a golden mask with a grin and glasses. "This is the Kanohi Dealius, the mask of Dealing with it." He handed it to Onua. "Give it to lewa. Tell him to use it." Pohatu found out quick his opponent had no speed power, so he went and sped him around 'till he went unconscious. Gali and her fake just slapped each other, in standard girly style. Lewa was getting several head injuries. His much bigger double was beating the sense out of him, and knocked him flat on his back. When Onua showed up with the mask, Lewa hastily put it on. "Geez, I need a headguard like this convenient mask here!" The power of the mask glowed, and all the doubles started screaming. "No! we're not meant to be dealt with! help!!!" Before long, they had shriveled into dust. As everyone was leaving, Tahu handed the mask back to Dume. "Thanks. You really saved our necks back there, but.. Will they ever return?" "Most likely." said Vakama. "Which is why you much be ready for when they do." "What I want to know," butted in Lewa "is why can't we ever hear of impending doom before it happens, when afterwards it is shown you obviously knew the whole time?" Dume and Vakama looked at each other, and then said "Ooh, look! a reindeer!" The Toa turned to look, and the two Turaga bolted away. "Well," said Kopaka, taking out the plastic teeth, "I think this ended well. Except for the two broken windows." "Yeah." said Pohatu, and they all went inside to have some more candy corn. Outside, in the marsh, a strange creature looked at his calendar. It's almost time, it thought. It quickly placed on a Santa hat. THE END

    Bronies

I get that some bronies are awful people. I get that they have a pretty loud voice. What I don't get is the amount of hate bronies get AS A GROUP for the sins of a few. To the right wing they're a symptom of the waning masculinity of society. To the social justice types they're misogynistic brutes who took one of the best modern feminist cartoons and turned it into their sex object, all while adopting a persecution complex that belittles the struggles of actual oppressed groups. Do you know what opinion I don't see often? That they are a large and diverse periphery demographic of a well-made cartoon, among them both bad people and good people. And it's entirely possible to mostly avoid the bad ones. Mainstream communities in the fandom like Equestria Daily generally do their best to keep things family-friendly. Local meetup groups can set rules to keep their meetups friendly, whether it's by limiting themselves to PG discourse or by limiting their exposure to the younger target audience. Cons are, from my experience, mostly positive experiences where, while you might run into more unsavory folks (as you might at any large gathering or convention), largely keep their tone welcoming and supportive and maintain a positive atmosphere. And most communities do plenty of good, whether it's by inspiring creativity among its members, supporting charities, or just going to the people who bring them the show and letting them know how much they're appreciated. Seriously, stereotyping is bad. Every time you call bronies as a group "neckbeards" or "perverts" or what have you, you're facilitating a persistent and broad stereotype that affects both the good fans and the bad ones. As an exercise, think about a group or subculture that you yourself are a part of, be it animé fans, gamers, sports fans, or even Lego fans. Now isolate the worst aspects you've seen in a member or members of that group (be it misogyny, cultural appropriation, perversion, rudeness, whatever), and see what it's like to label yourself as that. It's not nice, is it? One last note to address a common complaint I see: that the good people in the fandom are themselves guilty for associating with the bad ones. This is a false argument. Again, let's relate things to another fandom, that being the Lego fandom. I've seen plenty of misogyny and other bigotry within this fandom through my time on Eurobricks, Brickset, and even BZPower. But I'm not about to quit using those sites (or calling myself an AFOL) because of that. If I did, not only would I be missing out on a lot of the most relevant news and discussion to my interest in Lego, but by divorcing myself from the group, the group would itself become worse due to losing one more voice of reason who's willing to argue with its worst members. Rare is the group or subculture that maintains acceptable attitudes in all its members, but if you isolate yourself from any group that has one or more less-than-perfect members you're going to find yourself awfully lonely. By remaining there to combat regressive attitudes, you can make your part of the world a brighter place.
  12. It looks like it'll be funny, heartwarming, and spectacular looking, while paying homage to the Lego experience. The sets are fantastic and really capture the spirit of Lego creative play. It seems that it could generate more interest in Lego among the non-FOL population. My upcoming meetup will give me a chance to see some of my BZP peeps without having to wait six more months for Brickfair VA. And finally, it seems like other Lego fans will love it too. Not in the cult "there will never be anything better" sense that some people still cling to Bionicle with. Not in the "ha, ha, I like this ironically" sense that some people treat the Hero Factory or Ninjago or Chima or even the once loved Bionicle media with. Not in the "oh well, I guess the kids will like it" sense that the jaded AFOL community tends to view more whimsical themes with. And I certainly don't see the "Lego is doing everything wrong" perspective that I can't seem to escape whether I'm on BZP or Eurobricks, talking about sets or story, coming from revolutionary progressives who feel Lego isn't doing enough or from sexists or racists or otherwise backwards old geezers who feel Lego is doing too much. From what I see, the Lego fandom seems to largely be coming together in genuine, heartfelt appreciation for what this movie's shaping up to be. I'm sure once it's over BZP and Eurobricks and Tumblr will find things to complain about what it did or didn't do, but for now discussion of the movie is one of the few aspects of Lego discussion that doesn't tend to end in arguments or end up written off entirely by all but a select devoted fanbase. And I appreciate that.

    Ponies A Meme?

It seems that as soon as Takuma Nuva changed his name to Equinophobia and declared a fear of ponies, all the anti-bronies have been coming out of the woodwork. I'm not blaming Takuma for this, as his comments have been hilarious. What isn't is the proliferation of members replying with "This. I've been waiting for this meme to die" and other such comments. It does the fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic a disservice to dismiss the entire thing as a meme. Does it have memetic aspects? Yes. Has it spawned memes? Yes. Do some "fans" treat it solely as such? Yes again. But there's aspects of this show that defy the bounds of traditional memes. There is no thriving community for fans of Chuck Norris jokes. There's very few artists who specialize in Nyan Cat models. Like it or not, My Little Pony is more than a meme. It's a fandom, built around a series that continues to entertain with smart humor, detailed art, and colorful characters and stories. And as fandoms go, it tends to be one of the most welcoming and positive I've seen anywhere on the web. So keep on waiting if you expect it to run its course like most memes do. The MLP fandom is here to stay.
  14. Looking around the web (and procrastinating on the LMBs that may be a while or I might make it a contest) I've noticed the Harry Potter fandom has a very vocal minority of crazed shipping fan girls. Now I'm not saying a fandom with girls is a bad thing (it is a very good thing) but when the vocal part is a bunch OTP obsessed fan girls then it is a problem. Seriously the rage, shipping wars, and little fandom controversies then that it gets so frustrating to see these kinds things. Not every girl who likes Harry Potter is as I just described in fact I believe there is a silent majority of sane normal Harry Potter fangirls but when you have a vocal minority of crazy OTP shippers to outsiders it makes the fandom look bad. Now there probably is a vocal minority of crazed fanboys who also make the HP fandom, but I don't know, however there probably is and I haven't seen it. Sigh why is every fandom on the internet usually characterized by outsiders as insane, crazy, obsessed, stupid, mean, et cetera.
  15. About blogging. Or blogs. Or commenting on blogs. Before you ask, no, it's not because my blog has about 2 comments at average, one of them being from me. Well, maybe it is. Does it matter that much? I just wonder what exactly makes a good blog. Long helpful entries? Tried that, and nope, didn't help. Sharing stories of one's life? Boring, not interesting. Whining about things? Depends. Rants, maybe pointless? Boring, at least mine are. Asking the readers questions? Nuh uh. It's really hard to keep track with others' blogs, especially after the forum's software update. Even though I have "Notify me of new entries in blogs I follow" selected, I get no messages. Yay ... enough for now.

    Santa Claws

I waited five hours today and I just got into the tent... I got so freaked out because the video stream stayed blank and wouldn't load. I moved the controls around blindly and blindly and blindly because the time was running out. I thought the stream would show up but it didn't. So I hit the button and the crane plunged. And the next thing I know. BIGGIANTCARSPLOSION! You won! I don't even know... Also Medium series finale and Fringe is coming on.
  18. Even though it is an arc, I really liked Captain Shūsuke Amagai. He would have been such a great alley to the Soul Society, and then he goes and betrays them. I did not see that coming after the previous Captain Gin Ichimaru defected from the Soul Society. The Arrancar vs. Shinigami arc starts back up soon though!

I’m calling you out. What is your problem?! I’m trying to take down the Golden Sun Mercs to recruit Thane Krios. While you keep getting shot, and use all our medigel. Don’t expect to come with me on my next mission to recruit Samara. You can stay in the Normandy and play with the forward batteries. RT>>

    A 360 Dilemma

So there is this sale going on: Seeing as my 360 game collection consists of Borderlands, ME, ME2, ODST, and Star Wars Force Unleashed this is a great opportunity to pick up some great games I missed out on. Plus, I have a giftcard I can put towards my purchase. The problem is there are so many great games to choose from: The Orange Box Dragon Age Origins Dead Space BioShock BioShock2 Left4Dead Left4Dead2 Gears of War Gears of War2 Batman Arkham Asylum Fable2 Forza Motorsport 3 (This is not a complete list and just the games I’m considering. Some of the games overlap with the advice I recieved in this entry.) I’ve settled on buying three games instead of purchasing the new Need For Speed, but I don’t know what games to get. Have I mentioned how much I love Mass Effect?

    Mp3 Wma Aac M4a

I finally got a Micro SD card for my phone. It took some to transfer all the files I wanted over but it worked. The first thing I have to say is the phone has a better speaker system than my laptop, and I bet it runs longer on battery power too. There is a media player built right in so I can play all my songs by artist, genre, etc. While it is cool to have my phone serve so many multimedia purposes, there is a downside. Despite it supporting MP3, WMA, AAC, and M4A all the files won’t play. I have a bunch of MP3 ringtones I downloaded specifically for my phone and it says they aren’t supported. I probably own five CDs and the few tracks I went to put on the phone won’t play either. The CD file types are all WMA, which is a supported file type yet they won’t play. Then there is the AAC file I have. Out of all my songs I have one AAC song which plays in the memory card directly, but the file doesn’t register in the media player for some reason. No idea what’s going on with the phone at all, I’m just glad I got the card and it works. While I have a bunch of wallpapers I downloaded, I’m still attached to the one I initially purchased on my phone. Oh and I bought a laptop sleeve for my laptop. I measured my computer before I bought it and it’s just less than 14” so I bought a 14” sleeve. Needless to say when the sleeve came I realized it was too small. I managed to squeeze my laptop into the sleeve that actually measures around 13.5” wide. The problem is getting the laptop in is just as hard as getting it back out. There is also the fact the flap doesn’t cover the laptop all the way. The hinge areas with my power button and wifi signal button aren’t covered up. I think a laptop sleeve is supposed to cover all of the laptop?
  22. Well too bad because you can’t have it! Why? FedEx still refuses to deliver. I ordered my cell phone last Friday. Most of my paycheck went towards paying for the phone so it was a hefty purchase. The first few days after purchasing the phone I never received any type of notification for it. Monday I wrote to customer support and miraculously Tuesday I received a shipment notification. Much to my displeasure, I found out the package would be sent by FedEx. On the few occasions that I have received things via FedEx, none of them have ever arrived on schedule. For some reason FedEx can never find the place where we live. I cast aside my initial doubts because when I checked on the package status Wednesday it had already passed through two cities and was at the local FedEx facility and in a vehicle for deliver. When I checked back in on the status later in the day it said there was a shipment exception, cannot locate recipient. Yesterday I got on the internet when I woke up to check the status. I was happy to see the status was as “in transit” but then I found out it actually wasn’t. Once again down in the details it said “delivery exception” and “awaiting additional delivery information from recipient.” I logged off and called FedEx because I knew they weren’t going to call me. Luckily I got a receptionist right when I asked for one. So I’m telling the guy my information and about waiting for my package, and the failed attempt to deliver. He went “oh yeah” when he saw the information come up on his screen. Then he started asking for directions on how to get to our house. I started telling him the directions to get here. It wasn’t my first time explaining directions to our house with all the other trouble we’ve had. (All actual location names have been replaced with Peace, Love, Faith and Hope.) Today is Friday and the phone is not getting delivered. FedEx called today right before I woke and talked to my Mom. After I got up she told me what they said. (I won’t even get started on how irrational it would be for me to take my mom’s cellphone. She needs it for work or anything and the bill is a pretty penny. My plan is a third of what they pay and I get more service and features than her.) She didn’t actually tell them the road name, she used the road number but it’s the same difference. It is the only road in the area with that name so it really doesn’t matter. Then the mail was delivered and there was a postcard from FedEx. We are holding your package. We need additional deliver information: Directions from a major intersection or landmark. Your package will be returned to the shipper if we do not hear back from you in ten days. I’m not upset that I’m not getting my phone yet again. I could care less when I get it as long as I get it eventually. I’m more upset by the fact in today’s technological age one of the major delivery services cannot deliver a simple package. Take some time to sit back and think about that. Then again that is today’s potential problem. A majority of people don’t take the time to think before they act.
  23. I can fly drive! My photo ID expired on my birthday so it was pertinent I get it renewed. Today we made a trip to the DMV because my grandma needed to go, and I tagged along. My mom asked, "Are you going to take the test or renew your id?" I responded, "I don't know. I haven't studied." *cue backstory* Back when I entered high school I was of age for a permit, but my parent's were set against me driving. They wanted me to take drivers ed first. I left high school it was the year I was supposed to take drives ed, and I ended up never taking more than one class. After that there was not really a chance or need for me to drive so I never bothered with getting my permit. Two to three years passed and it was time for me to get my GED. In order to take the test to get my equivalency I needed proof of identification. While I spent all of my time studying for the GED, I also added the drivers manual to my studies. I figured if I was going to get my ID I might as well kill two birds with one stone, take my GED and my drivers test. When my family found out about it I got "The insurance is going to be really expensive." The day I went in to get my ID I ended up just getting my photo ID. After the fact my Mom said, "Well you could have taken the driver's test." *flash forward to the present* I walked into the DMV and it was busy. When I talked to the clerk, I asked about the test. He said, "You can take it today and it only costs five dollars if you pass." My grandma was going to be a while so I opted to take the test because there was no reason not to. I also had a feeling and wondered, "Could I possibly pass the first try when I haven't studied in years?" Then the guy handed me the paperwork to fill out and said, "You need a proof of residence." Me being a college student that lives at home, I do not have any bills or anything like that. I had a thought though, "I have my food handler's license!" The card provides my name and even a space for my address. I filled in the address with the other paperwork and returned it to the guy who started setting up the test. He had me do a vision test, read the smallest letters in the optical viewer. I read off the letters perfectly and he said I was good to go. He sent me into the test room and showed me the touch screen monitor I'd be using. I clicked tapped through all of the mumbo jumbo about state policies and went straight for the test. The instructions said you were only allowed to miss six out of twenty five. I started answering questions and made it over a quarter of the way through before I missed one. There was a sign that looked like a winding road ahead but it was actually a sharp turn ahead. The signs looked similar in my memory but I ended up picking the wrong answer. Well near the end of the test, I realized, "Oh wow, I could answer all these wrong and still pass." I passed the test on my first try without studying zilch in three-ish years. How awesome is that? I even finished up all of my business while my grandma was still waiting. We got out to the car where my mom was waiting and told her. She instantly asked if I wanted to drive, but I said no. Then she started telling us about the girl we saw in the DMV who failed her examination. She could not find the blinkers or the headlights and apparently should have been a blonde. Then we got to the deli where I work at and my mom was telling the people there about it. My cousin and her boyfriend (the owner's son) were working. My cousin and mom both said they failed their first tests. Then the guy started telling us about a car for sale. His friend has a Honda Accord with about a hundred thousand miles on it for about $2500. He said he saw all the work the guy has done on it and knows it is in good shape. We really do not have the money for that right now but it was still awesome to hear about. We are trying to get a house built so that is more of a priority than anything else. Later on my Mom said, "You can just have my car and I'll quit work." That is an entire different story and rant I will no get into here. However, it is partially why I was always concerned about getting my permit/license because I always hear things like that. Plus, we cannot afford for my Mom to quit her job just because I can work and drive. I really do not understand why she says things like that sometimes. There is even more good news though! I had calculated I would make $60 every two weeks but the dated check threw me off. I actually make $130 every two weeks. At that rate, I will have enough money to save for future conventions like BrickFest and BrickFair and still have to spend money on the side. I'm in the process of purchasing my first cell phone now and have a general list of planned purchases for the near future.
  24. It is not wise to work two days and then go five days without work. My head was so out of it when I first started working today. I kept making mistakes on the register and forgetting stuff. It did not help matters I had other stuff on my mind from before going to work. After I started doing things everything started coming together though. I stopped making mistakes and I even learned how to do gift cards. Maybe it would be better if I drove myself to work. See before leaving the house my parents were all flustered and rushing. My dad didn’t want my mom driving fast to get me there on time. He was going to come with us but he had to be home in time to drive to work. It didn’t help matters we had the slightly sick kid with us. First my dad and the kid were coming with us. Then the kid got sick so they were both staying home. Then my dad was just staying behind and the kid was coming with us. So I was just sitting in the front seat, sitting and waiting. My mom was like “are you okay?” I’m perfectly fine I’m just waiting on them to make up their minds and get into a more sensible frame of mind. I said “Love you.” The usual farewell while everyone was talking and we left. Then my mom went “You need to tell your dad bye and hi more often.” I was like “I just told him I love him.” And “We’ll he didn’t hear you. He doesn’t hear you like I hear you and I can barely hear you.” I’m sorry I don’t talk loud and I’m quiet by nature. I’m sorry my dad works in a mill and his hearing isn’t that great. I said goodbye I love you every time we leave. Then on the drive to work she asked if I liked working there. I told her yeah, I like it. Then she told me that I need to tell the people I work with if I don’t like working there. That’s really encouraging to tell me to quit if I don’t like work. Maybe this is harsh but my mom isn’t in the place to be giving that type of advice. She’s been intent on quitting walmart for the past few years and she still hasn’t. She just had a job interview last week for a new job and what does she say? “Oh I think I’ll stay at walmart.” So much effort into applying at every place in the area for a job and after the interview she settles for staying at walmart. She got me to work on time but my mind was so taxed. I forgot to hit the right buttons on the register and had to void out purchases. Then I gave a customer the wrong amount of change. Plus I kept forgetting to do a few things here and there like when I went from one task to another. I spent a good portion of the day ringing up purchases and learning the gift card system. I even confirmed that I was doing the credit card purchases properly despite previous worries. I did spend some time cutting up a different type of pepper for an order but stopped because they realized it wasn’t due until Friday. However, I did spend a good bit of time running the slicer. I sliced all the meat and cheeses for tomorrows Italian hoagies. Then I stacked the meats and cheeses in the right order so all you have to do is throw them on bread and they’re ready to go. Lots, lots, lots, lots of dishes today too. The only time I sat down was to eat a small snack and while I cut up a few peppers. I love being able to just get whatever I want to eat though, there are so many options and you don’t really have to cook since it is already prepared. Unlike cooking at home except everything is made right there in the kitchen. I also filled out my work forms so they can get me on the payroll. Of course we aren’t really sure if I filled things out properly or not. The whole dependant and question form was confusing for everyone and none of them really understood it. Suffice to say I’ll have to file income taxes sometime in the future since I’m a working man now. That really added to the distracting mind occupying that had me processing and making so many errors. It wasn’t so bad in the end I suppose. I finally met the boss and once I got out of the funk I was in everything was good. Hopefully tomorrow will have a brighter outlook. As for now, I’m going to go eat dinner, play some Mass Effect 2, and watch all the great shows on tonight: Warehouse 13, White Collar, and Cover Affairs. EDIT I forgot to mention I need to get my food handler’s license.

    Mass Effect

is such an amazing game. It took some time getting used to, but all the interaction and role-playing elements are great. The only problem I have with it is selecting my team members. I love having Ashley Williams as part of my team along with Tani. My custom character is a Vanguard, and that combination of team members doesn’t seem to be fairly balanced. I can make more balanced teams if I use other character and make all three expertise balanced, but I like them so much. Garrus, Wrex, and Kaidan have only been on my team once or twice for missions, and I haven’t even used Liara T’Soni yet on my team. My paragon point count just keeps growing, and I’ve only received Renegade points once.
