  1. "Times are dark, and evil rules..." 20 years ago, six canisters washed ashore the island of Mata Nui, changing the lives of many fans around the world. In the time before time, from the unreleased Cybots to the Slizers/Throwbots and then to Roboriders, these Technic themes would be the foundation in which Bionicle was built upon and improved vastly. Unleashed into the world, Bionicle continues to inspires the lives of many people to this day and promotes nothing but creativity and positivity. Main: In-case you haven't checked them out, BZPower just presented two special messages to the Bionicle community, two messages from Christian Faber and Greg Farshtey. Christian Faber's Message: https://youtu.be/lVgYQdyokic "See you on a golden beach somewhere and keep MOCing and being creative". Greg Farshtey's Message: https://youtu.be/6dhR0Az4j3g "As long as somebody is thinking about it, as long as somebody loves it, it's never actually gone". 20 years of a toyline that changed my life forever and continues to inspire me to this day, from its creative storytelling to its visuals, concepts, and messages. Thank you Bionicle, everybody that worked on it, and to this amazing community that keeps the heart beating. 20 Years of Bionicle Unity. Duty. Destiny. (Both images created by Christian Faber via Faber Files)
  2. Greg has only written a few Ninjago comics. But what if he wrote the entire Ninjago story from the beginning? How would the characters be? How would the world of Ninjago be? How would the Lore be? But what do you think? How do you think Ninjago would be if Greg was the writer of it?
  3. So why? I don't think it bothered anyone and I honestly thought it was pretty cute, especially in the bohrok animations. Love has been shown to exist in the Bionicle universe again later in the story, so, what was the problem with them? Or was it all because of Hewkii's transformation into a Toa Mahrii? Is that really the only reason why (or did the de-canonization happen before he was decided to become a toa?)? Are toa aloud to love matoran, and vice versa? Are toa aloud to love toa? Are turaga aloud to love toa or matoran? Are turaga aloud to love turaga? Are matoran aloud to love matoran?!?!? TOO MANY QUESTIONS LEFT UNANSWERED!!!! Sorry if this topic was already made before, I'm just kinda new. But what do you guys think? Do you know why in particular? And what is your favorite Bionicle ship? Jaller x Hahli? Vakama x Nokama? Lhikann x Tuyet!? Or even the sad story of Lesovikk x Nikila? Tell me, I'd love to hear your opinions!
  4. Official Greg Compendium Thanks to the BS01 staff, over the last few months we've been lucky enough to have the opportunity to talk with Greg Farshtey. Additionally, Greg has been spending time on the LEGO Message Boards, offering the fanbase there the opportunity to ask questions like the BS01 staff has allowed us. However, as every chat's results are posted in a separate topic, discussion has become a bit fragmented here on BZPower. Combined with the recent announcement of the archives closing, there's a lot of storyline information that's being either taken down or buried. Additionally, the topic over at LEGO.com where Greg answers questions is riddled with spammy questions and requests, meaning that on the occasion someone posts a legitimate question that has not yet been answered it is also quickly buried. (As of the posting of this topic, it is 231 pages long and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down!) That’s where this topic comes in. This will serve as a compendium of the information Greg has shared: we'll have links to old Greg quotes, courtesy of Fishers64, and Erebus's topics. You can also post any storyline tidbits you may have: if it's an old PM you never posted, a post you found on the LEGO Message Boards topic, or something similar you want to share and discuss, it belongs here! [Note: Double-posting is, yes, is, allowed here IF you are posting a new quote from Greg. ] Fishers64's Greg Quotes Note: these are all downloads. Greg Answers TXT.zip (Note: this is a large download) Greg Answers DOCX.zip (Note: this is a large download, and has same content as the previous) Greg Posts.zip - A selection of 15 Greg posts, each of which is placed in a separate TXT file. There is also one txt file containing three posts dating from September 2005. Erebus's Topics (in Chronological Order) [update 9/20] Disguised Great Being Revealed! [update 10/17] Red Star Revelations Names and a Certain Green Cloud GregF Answers New Elemental Prefix - Lightning GregF Answers 2 New Elemental Prefix - Plasma New Elemental Prefix - Magnetism + Plant Life "Chat with Greg Farshtey" topic on the LEGO Message Boards Much thanks to Infrared for proposing and drafting this topic, and fishers64 for the quote download collections! And of course, thanks to Greg for all the answers he's given over the years, and everybody who has posted the answers, such as Erebus! Enjoy! [Edit: Thanks also to TheSkeletonMan939 for the following: How to see all Greg's posts on the LMB, and a download of the Farshtey Feed, a feature we ran in the old forum version of S&T (lemme know if this link ever stops working and I'll put up another, as it appears this has a since-last-download expiration). This topic was lost in the recent downtime but I had backed it up; those were from a reply in it.] [Edit 2: Thanks to JAG18 for compiling a collection of about 230 quotes from the Greg topic on LEGO.com.]
  5. Ok, so this may seem like a weird question, but I had a debate with a friends that seems to have no real answer that we can find out easily. So, I was wondering it any of you knew: Do/Did Cathy Hapka or Greg Farshtey get royalties (money) from the Bionicle books they wrote? My friend thinks that they sold the book to Lego and Scholastic, which means they got no royalty checks from it. I'm inclined to believe this, but I'm trying to find proof, or something. So does anyone know?
  6. Greg Farshtey has approved the idea that: EDIT: Good catch on the "All but the..." part!
  7. So I'm trying to get all the PDF's of the Journey's End book onto my computer so I can print them off and have my own physical copy of the book. However, I've only been able to get the PDF's for the prologue, and chapters 1-10. It seems it is impossible to enter BioCodes on the Lego website now, so I can't get the epilogue that way. i was wondering if anyone else might know of a way to get the PDF of the epilogue? My google searching has found everything else except for that. Thanks!
  8. Updated 9/20 (see below)Hey BIONICLE fans,I know many of you have been asking for some BIONICLE news or story updates for quite a while now (over a year!). Well, today, the wait is finally over... somewhat.I have been communicating with Greg Farshtey outside of BZPower for a few weeks now to try to come up with a way to deliver some news. Still working that out as he's been very busy, but at least I got something for you guys!We finally know who the disguised Great Being is (remember the being Orde was referring to in The Yesterday Quest, Chapter 3?)! If you do not wish to be spoiled and want to wait for Greg Farshtey to write a chapter (lol good luck), then do not click the following spoiler tag: -------------UPDATE [9/1]: I asked Greg two very important questions people were wondering about concerning the disguised Great Being, and here are the answers in the following spoiler tag: -------------UPDATE [9/20]: What is the undisguised Great Being's motive? Click the spoiler tag to find out: [Edit by bones: Spoiler tags no longer needed for any of this (currently ).]
  9. NOTE: As of 2/11/12, this topic has been certified by bonesiii to be revived with impunity; it is not subject to the 30-day revival limit of the Storyline and Theories forum. In order to reduce the amount of misconceptions members have about current Story, I have compiled a group of Greg quotes that you may find useful. While you can look through the 5-page Greg Quotes Topic and the even larger, 334 page Official Greg Dialogue for your educational enlightenment, it is rather long.Old Greg Quotes Topic | Old Greg Discussion Topic Concerning The GB and Murderer from Recent Serials: These reveals are direct quotes from Greg on such matters, with the following caveat: QUOTE(Erebus)[Greg's] own words, but I might have deleted some unnecessary words.QUOTE(GregF)The Great Being is Velika.QUOTE(GregF)1. Was it part of Teridax's?QUOTE(GregF)6) No, it was not Makuta essence.QUOTE(Zaktan)What was that green cloud that plunged into the Energized Protodermis tank to form the Golden Fusion being?QUOTE(GregF)Zaktan Toa Tahu's New Powers:Question:2)Since tahu absorbed the powers of the rahkshi he absorbed with the golden armor, is he more powerful than a makuta now or would he just stand aextremely good chance?QUOTE(GregF)2) The latter8) Did Teridax send only Heat Vision Rahkshi onto Bara Magna or a mixture of different kinds, with the heat vision type more common than the rest?QUOTE(GregF)8) No, not only heat vision Rahkshi.QUOTE(Tuma55)4. Were all 42 types of Rahkshi present during the battle of Bara Magna?QUOTE(GregF)4) I doubt itQUOTE(Night Terror)1) Tahu now has devoloped Heat Vision powers. Does he have some more surprises in store, or that's it all?QUOTE(GregF)1) Yes, he doesQUOTE (Tahu: Spirit of the Mist)2) Now that Tahu has all the powers of the Kraata he disintegrated, is he more or less powerful than he was as a Toa Nuva?QUOTE(GregF)2) More QUOTE(GregF)QUOTE (Jedi Knight Crazy)Regarding the last chapter of Journey's End (Great writing, by the way. Didn't realize I was missing so much with these novels, might have to raid Amazon and get the ones I missed), I have some guesses regarding the nature of Tahu's new powers:1. Is there a connection to Tahu's new heat vision powers and the fact that he was fighting primarily Heat Vision Rahkshi?2. Does the Golden armor give him all Rahkshi powers?3. Does it give him the ability to absorb powers from enemies?1) I would say no2) Follow the story and find out3) Not in general, no, because the GA is really of no use to him against anyone but Rahkshi. QUOTE (GregF)QUOTE (Electric Turahk)Heat vision, eh? Hmm.Did the Golden Armor enhance Tahu's own powers such that they are "all-encompassing" and he can do literally anything related to fire and heat? (Not that being a Toa of Fire wouldn't have made this possible anyways, but I guess heat vision doesn't count there... I myself find this one quite unlikely anyways.)Or...Did it grant him the abilities of all of the Kraata it slayed? The second one. The Glatorian's Elemental PowersQUOTE(Lewa Krom)O.k thanks, I'm sorry but I didn't understand your answer on the 7, the Glatorian had the powers, they didn't needed weapons to use them, so why Mata Nui had to change the weapons if they could use their powers through their hands?QUOTE(GregF)Because he didn't want them to know the power was in them, he wanted them to think it was in their weapons. The idea of elementally powered weapons wasn't new to them, they had those in the war. The idea of them themselves having elemental powers would probably have disturbed them.QUOTE(GregF)ANSWER: Glatorian elemental powers are generated by their bodies. Their "machine parts" are too minimal in most cases and are not designed for energy storage.QUOTE(Lord of Bionicles)7.-you said that Mata Nui let the Glatorian think he had charged up their weapons though he was giving the powers to the Glatorian and the weapons were just the focus, does this mean that they had the powers but needed a weapon that could focus them? if so then they can only use the powers when they have that specifical weapon unlike the Toa that can use their powers through their hands?QUOTE(GregF)7) No, it does not mean they have to have the weapons to use the powers.QUOTE(Erebus)1. I know that Mata Nui, with the Ignika, is (or was) capable of unlocking Glatorian's elemental powers. Would he be able to do so with a Vorox (I know he wouldn't, but I'm just asking)?QUOTE(GregF)1) I wouldn't call it "unlocking" so much as bestowing, and yes MarendarQUOTEQUOTEI liked the start of The Yesterday Quest, though I wish we had gotten a Toa of Jungle. I have question regarding Marendar. It seems rather ironic that the Great Beings would have expected the Toa to be traitors and not the Makuta, even though it was reversed. I mean, if Teridax hadn't betrayed Mata Nui in the way he did, wouldn't the Makuta, even if supposedly peaceful, prove just as much of a threat, if not more, to the peace of the reformed Spherus Magna?Anyways, I can't wait to see where this takes us.1) Not necessarily, no. Because if the Makuta hadn't betrayed Mata Nui, things would have gone as they were supposed to -- the planet would have been reformed, Mata Nui would have shut down, and the Toa, Makuta etc. would have all shut down too. So the Makuta wouldn't be a threat to anyone. Lhikan's DeathQUOTE(Lord of Bionicles)7.- …I know that on Bionicle 2 Vakama used the vahi to slow down Teridax´s shadow hand but he couldn´t control the mask and he slowed himself too then Lhikan jumped in front of him and died, how did he died if Teridax only took Lhikan´s shield?QUOTE(GregF)7) Simple. Let's say you are reaching to grab something in a hurry. Someone suddenly gets in your way. What happens? Your hand hits him. In this case, Makuta was sending out a shadow hand to wrest something from a powerful Toa, and instead he hit a Turaga. A Turaga is physically a lot weaker than a Toa, so the impact of the blow killed Lhikan. Kanohi Vahi4. If the Vahi was destroyed outside of the MU would it end time there?4) No4. Why not, if you don't mind me asking?4) Because the Vahi is keyed to work with the MU -- it is part of the machine. It doesn't affect the universe outside of the MU.4) Would the Vahi still be able to slow down time outside of the MU, like the Hau can still put up shields and the Ignika can still create life?4) Yes Kanohi HauQUOTE(Katuko) 1) The Hau can block almost any physical attack the user is aware of. But can it defend against a physical attack you can't see? Say Vakama turned invisible with his Huna and struck at Tahu. If Tahu knew Vakama would try to do that, could he block the attack just by anticipating it?QUOTE(GregF)1) NoQUOTE(Katuko)2) In the same vein, can the Hau block "instant" attacks? Say, Takanuva's laser beams or more modernly: A bullet? neither of these would give the Hau wearer any time to react, but if the shield was already up...?QUOTE(GregF)2) Yes, it couldQUOTE(Katuko)3) Does the Hau shield rely on reflexes if it's not up, or does it automatically activate as soon as an attack becomes apparent as long as the user is aware?QUOTE(GregF)3) You have to activate the mask yourself, it doesn't come up automatically. But in combat, it is likely you would have it up more often than not.QUOTE(Katuko)4) The shield repels even attacking beings, as seen when Onua pushes an infected Lewa away from himself with it. If the shield is up, can a person pass through it if they are calmly walking instead of violently attacking?QUOTE(GregF)4) No.QUOTE(Katuko)5) If not, can a Toa using a Mask of Intangibility or a Rahkshi with Density Control do so?QUOTE(GregF)5) I wouldn't suggest that, as the energy of the mask might do nasty things to you The Red StarQUOTE(GregF)I will give you a scoop, which you can share (or not) as you choose -- a big part of the rest of this serial is going to take place inside the red star ... which is NOT altogether for what people think it is for ... and I will give you some things to keep in mind:1) The beings in the red star2) Jaller's death and rebirth in MOL, and exactly how and why it happened.3) Why it was safe for Teridax to kill so many Makuta over the yearsQUOTE(Greg Farshtey)Mata Nui was supposed to be a self-sustaining system, and obviously, certain individuals played very important roles in maintaining it. In addition, it necessarily had finite resources for producing new beings to replace any lost in accidents, etc. Hence the red star -- a being who died inside Mata Nui would be teleported to the red star where their essence would be transplanted into another body and they would be sent back. Unfortunately, as with so many things related to Mata Nui's construction, it didn't work very well. The teleporting "to" worked but the teleporting "from" didn't, so a lot of newly revived dead folk were stuck on the satellite with no way to get back home. QUOTE(Anti Nui)1) Just to be 100% sure, Annona and the Red Star have no connection, correct?QUOTE(GregF)1) I can't answer that QUOTE(TNTOS)1) Do the inhabitants of the red star know that the Mata Nui robot and the prototype are both destroyed?1b) Also, do they know that Spherus Magna is whole again or are they ignorant of what has happened on Bara Magna?1c) What will happen to the red star now that the Mata Nui robot is no longer functioning?1e) These questions won't happen to be answered in The Yesterday Quest, will they?QUOTE(Greg)1) They would know about the MN robot, but not the prototype, as the prototype has nothing to do with them1b) No, they do not, nor would they care1c) It stays in orbit until that orbit decays1e) Some may be QUOTE(Erebus)Why are some beings alive, like Mavrah, and others are not?QUOTE(Greg Farshtey)Matoro and the Makuta did not come back, for a simple reason. None of them have bodies anymore. The body is what is teleported up (which is why you don't see BIONICLE graveyards) and then either repaired or a new one is made to house the consciousness. If the body has been utterly destroyed, there is nothing to work with.QUOTE(Erebus)What is the nature of the lightning that struck 6 Matoran?QUOTE(Greg)There was never supposed to be Matoran outside the robot. The Toa Mata failed to wake Mata Nui on time, and thus there were still Matoran outside on the islands of Mata Nui and Voya Nui. The lightning acts like a fail-safe to create new Toa outside the robot in case they are ever needed.QUOTE(Greg Farshtey)Fulfilling your destiny does not mean you cannot be revived. We have seen plenty of characters fulfill their destiny and yet live on. The point of the red star is basically that even Mata Nui is not self-sustaining if it loses too many beings (to an accident, say), the same way you could not survive if you lost too many blood cells without replacing them. We haven't SEEN Lhikan alive again, that doesn't mean he isn't.QUOTE(Greg Farshtey)Rahi can be revived, since they play a role in Mata Nui's functioning as well.QUOTE(Greg Farshtey)The Kanohi Tryna, the Mask of Reanimation, brings you back right away with all the damage -- red star takes a good deal longer, but repairs the damage.QUOTEDoes the Red Star always work in reviving every dead being with an intact body or is it selective about what it chooses to resurrect? Rahi too?QUOTE(Greg Farshtey)No, it works in general, everyone has some role to play in the universe.QUOTECan you name anyone other than Mavrah who [is] alive in the Red Star?QUOTE(GregF)LhikanBasically, anyone whose body was not disintegrated would be there. So no Matoro, no Brotherhood members, nobody who had no body leftQUOTEHow long ago was the Red Star broken? From the start, or was it due to the Great Cataclysm?QUOTE(GregF)It stopped working quite a while before the events of Mystery of Metru Nui, which is why no one was looking around for Lhikan to come back.QUOTEDoes this mean there are two Hydraxons alive now?QUOTE(GregF)Yes, one up there, one down here.QUOTECan the Red Star still teleport the dead MU inhabitants to it now that the MU is effectively destroyed, and if not, how was it able to reach the Matoran in canisters in Voya Nui to turn them into the Toa Inika?QUOTE(GregF)It can't teleport right now, because the system is broken. As for the Inika, that wasn't teleportation at work, that was electrical discharge.QUOTEIs there any kind of injury that would bar a being from being revived by the Red Star? Like perhaps a missing limb?QUOTE(GregF)No, there simply has to be a body left to work with.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------QUOTENow what if someone with teleportation powers (like Brutaka with a functional Olmak or Botar) died could they escape the Red Star back to the Matoran Universe?QUOTE(GregF)Arguably, yesQUOTESo does that mean Botar was too damaged to be saved by the Red Star?QUOTE(GregF)No, it simply means that either a ) he reappeared someplace we have not seen him yet, or ...b ) He was sufficiently messed up by the experience of dying and coming back that he doesn't know where he is and isn't focusing on getting back.QUOTEDoes option B often happen to people? How aware are they of their circumstances?QUOTE(GregF)Well, the folks encountered on the red star thus far did not seem too together to me.QUOTEWhat was the purpose of the red star on the map that Tarduk was following in the web serial?QUOTE(GregF)It marked the location of a Great Being facility, the one in which the RS was built.QUOTEOkay, now what about the mental image of the Red Star that Tren Krom projected right before his death?QUOTE(GregF)TK was killed by a Great Being. The RS image served two purposes -- to TK, it symbolized the Great Beings, and ..it was a bit of irony .. as a completely organic being, the RS could not bring him backQUOTEAs well as the fact that he was on Spherus Magna and the RS could not have brought him back anyways?QUOTE(GregF)Well, we don't know that. The RS is keyed in to MU inhabitants. We don't know the fact that he was no longer in the MU would have made a difference. Might have made a difference to his being sent back ...But the RS isn't sending anyone back now anyway. Energized ProtodermisQUOTE(GregF)5) Yes, but since there is no EP on SM, it's not going to come into play.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5) Is it possible that any of the EP within the MU might leak out onto Bara Magna?7) Is the Energized Protodermis Entity still alive?QUOTE(GregF)5) Possible, but not likely.7) Yes The Shadowed OneQUOTE(Millenium)6. Is TSO dead?QUOTE(GregF)6) No, he is not.QUOTE(Kanohi Lahi)9) Has Voporak taken the Vahi to the Shadowed One?QUOTE(GregF)9) No, TSO is off doing something else at the moment. The Ending QUOTE (GregF)QUOTE (exotoamahri)QUOTE (GregF)QUOTE (exotoamahri)Hello again, Mr. Farshtey.Just some more questions. When Aqua Magna was reunited, What happend to the oribting celetial body? (The one that looks like a moon.) This oneIf Pahrak-Kal or Levak-Kal landed on Spherus Magna, what would be their first objective? When Bota Magna and Aqua Magna Combined, Did either of the moons opened up and spread out, or was half the moon crushed against SM?1) Again, depends on how fast AM moved. If it moved too fast, the moon would have been ripped out of its orbit.2) The Kal's only mission is to save the Bahrag, and the Bahrag don't need saving, so they would go to sleep.3) I don't understand your questionI'll use fruit as an example, BM is a melon, and Aqua magna and Bota magna are apples. If you put them together, all living things in between Bara Magna and Bota Magna would be crushed. When the two moons merged with BM, did the planets open up and unfold, flat onto BM?Or were all living things crushed between the planets? Also, what prevented the water from Aqua Magna to flood parts of Bara Magna and drown the inhabitants?Think of it this way -- you tear off a chunk of Earth, say with America on it, all the way down to the molten core. The top of the chunk is the surface of the Earth. So the sides of the chunk are what would have been the underground on Earth. Who's living there? Nobody. So if you put the chunk back in place, no one gets hurt.Another analogy. You have a little flag stick in a patch of your lawn. You dig up that patch. Now you have the flag sticking out of the grass, and on every side, the dirt that was underneath that grass. If you then put the divot back in the lawn, the flag is not harmed. As for Aqua Magna, what prevented it was me and the fact that Earth science only applies in BIONICLE when I want it to. The Shadow TakanuvaQUOTE(Erebus)10. Are all the Shadow Takanuva dead at this point, including the ones seen in Destral?QUOTE(GregF)10) No. KranaQUOTE(LordStrachan)2. What happened to the Krana- Kal after the Bohrak-Kals defeat?2a. What happened to the Krana after the Island of Mata Nui's destruction?3. Can the Krana control beings such as Zyglak, or Skrall?4. Are the Bahrag susceptible to mind control (or any form of suggestion, verbal or Non-verbal), that might change what they believe their mission is?QUOTE(GregF)2) Some escaped, some didn't2a) Depends on where they were at the time3) Zyglak, yes, Skrall, no4) Yes Whether Greg can continue the story/Status of Bionicle Story.comQUOTE(GregF)6) No idea. I was told that the BStory site would up through the end of 2011. I don't know if they plan to keep it up after that or if it will be shut down at that point.Question:QUOTE(Lewa Krom)1. Before I go into Sahmad's Tale, where most of questions lie, my first question is more of an extension of the previous PM I sent you. I'm aware that you have no idea if BStory will continue past 2011 or not. My question is, do you know what might determine whether it continues on or not?1a. I had gotten the impression earlier that BStory's continuing might be based on traffic on the BStory site. If that is not true and I'm remembering or interpretting something wrong, disregard this question. Would reading the serials on BStory increase traffic, and thus potentially continuing the storyline, rather than reading on BS01? Again, if this is a wrong assumption in the first place... when you know what happens when assume...Response:QUOTE(GregF)1) It will most likely be decided by either the US Brand Manager or the team in Billund. While it is certainly not the most expensive site in the world to run, there is still a budget associated with it. Whether they want to continue maintaining that budget probably depends on the reasons they kept the site up in the first place.1A) No idea. I have a lot of theories on why the site is up. In some, traffic would matter. In others, not so much, because the site might be up to continue using the BIONICLE trademarks publicly so they have legal protection.QUOTE(GregF)2a) At the moment, no. I can only do BIONICLE story with permission from LEGO.QUOTE(Ynot)5) Do you have a set number of Serials you are going to do?QUOTE(GregF)5) As many as I feel I reasonably have time for._______________________________________________________________________Thanks for reading. I welcome improvement suggestions as well as suggestions for new relevant quotes that I've missed. And for all you nervous reporters, I did get this topic approved by bonesiii.

    Pitch White

Pitch White 4/17/12 9:10 P.M. "Another one bites the dust", thought a bearded man in his mid-forty's as he put the finishing touch on another novel, "send this copy to LEGO for review, and I can finally have that vacation I was thinking of having." He quickly checked Facebook for any updates. There was nothing there except a post telling him that something important was waiting for him on his BZPower account. "I'll look at it later", he thought. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a doorbell. While walking to the door, he wondered why someone would be at his house at that late an hour. When he opened the door, no one was there. He looked around for a moment, trying to find the person that knocked. When he looked down, he saw it. It was a small book. He picked it up to get a better look at it. It was a small, brown, leather-bound notebook with the Bionicle symbol on the cover. He opened it up and chuckled. The inside was covered with matoran symbols. "Probably some excited fan that wants to be mysterious", he thought. He combed through the notebook until he found something rather unusual. A list of names and phone numbers. This was possibly the only part of the notebook that was not written in matoran. It featured a lot of names that would seem like toa cover names. GAIA NOVA TAYLOR NOVA PARKER NOVA OWEN NOVA KORI NOVA ALLEN NOVA TREY NOVA "Wow. This fan really took the time to make this look like a giant conspiracy", the man thought. "Oh well. Maybe I'll call these numbers in the morning just for the fun of it". He left the notebook on the coffee table and went to his room for some sleep. Little did he know that that was his last night alive. A/N: Wow! First Fic! And I kill off everyone's favorite writer off the bat for the sake of dramatic tension! What is this mysterious notebook? And who is the protagonist now that Greg Farshtey is dead? Find out next chapter! Don't forget to review here!
  12. I haven't seen much discussion of the Hero Factory Secret Mission series by Greg Farshtey except conversations I've initiated... and that goes not only for BZPower but also anywhere else I go for online discussion. Have you read the two Secret Mission books that have been released so far (The Doom Box and Legion of Darkness)? And if not, what's keeping you?I thoroughly recommend this series for anyone who's a fan of either Hero Factory or the BIONICLE books by Greg Farshtey, as they're easily the same quality as the BIONICLE books and far superior to any other Hero Factory media to date as far as story is concerned.Chapter Books LEGO Hero Factory Secret Mission #1: The Doom Box was released September 1, 2012 and tells the story of Core Hunter's attempt to assemble the pieces of an ancient weapon called the Doom Box, which once assembled would have the potential to destroy the entire galaxy. The Heroes of Alpha 1 Team pursue Core Hunter across various planets, but find themselves thwarted at every turn. Over the course of the adventure, the Heroes face Core Hunter himself, a fearsome space creature, and a powerful ancient figure with ambiguous intentions. And not everyone lives to the end of the story. LEGO Hero Factory Secret Mission #2: Legion of Darkness was released October 1, 2012. Furno is reviewing the data files on the villains who escaped in the mass breakout, and finds that several were involved in a classified mission from the early days of Hero Factory. Asking Bulk why the mission was classified, the veteran hero tells Furno the story of how he, Stringer, Stormer, and Von Ness aided their team leader Thresher in striking fear into the hearts of the galaxy's villains. But one villain, Black Phantom, came up with a plan to take the Hero Factory down by forming a team of powerful villains called the Legion of Darkness. By the end of the story, a new villain has been created and the Hero Factory has come closer to its permanent destruction than it has in any other adventure, at the hands of the last person anyone would suspect of such a deed. LEGO Hero Factory Secret Mission #3: Collision Course will be released on January 1, 2013. We have no details on its plot, and we probably shouldn't draw any conclusions from the synopsis on Amazon (which is a generic preliminary synopsis that's been featured for pretty much all of the books, and really only applies to the first) or from the cover image (which seems like it just uses visuals from upcoming sets, just as the previous two books used 2012 visuals-- this topic isn't for discussing those, though). LEGO Hero Factory Secret Mission #4: Robot Rampage will be released on March 1, 2013. The same things I stated for the above novel also apply here. LEGO Hero Factory Secret Mission #5: Mirror World will be released on May 1, 2013. We have no further details on it.Young Readers Books The level two reader LEGO Hero Factory: Meet the Heroes and the level 3 reader LEGO Hero Factory: Heroes in Action were both written by Shari Last, published by Dorling Kindersley, and released April 30, 2012. I don't know too much about these books, but they don't really interest me at all because unlike the BIONICLE readers by Scholastic, these just use TV episode screenshots and/or official images of the sets rather than gorgeous hand-drawn illustrations. On July 15, 2013 Dorling Kindersley will be releasing two more readers, LEGO Hero Factory: The Alien Wars and LEGO Hero Factory: Alien Attack, though I'm not expecting much more of them than those already released. You're welcome to speculate about next year's story based on the titles, though I don't think that belongs in this topic.OtherFinally, on July 15, Dorling Kindersley will also be releasing a LEGO Hero Factory Ultimate Sticker Collection. The quality of their Ultimate Sticker Collections for other themes has been great, so anyone interested in that kind of thing might be looking forward to that.So that's the deal. I have the first two Secret Mission books, so if anyone has any questions, you're welcome to ask. But I thoroughly encourage you to buy the Secret Mission stories for yourselves and experience Hero Factory like never before.
  13. Greg Farshtey offered me information on the Red Star, and of course I said yes. There's a lot more to the Red Star than its previously revealed function, which was to provide a boost for Mata Nui whenever he leaves a planet. Some of you have already guessed it, but still surprising nevertheless. Be sure to check out the topic I posted up here to get your hands on the new information.
  14. This topic is for discussion of the LEGO Ninjago books. So far, there have been a number of Ninjago books, most of them by the very familiar author Greg Farshtey, who handled the BIONICLE comics starting in 2001 and most of the BIONICLE books starting in 2003. These complement the stories told in the TV show Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, with occasional expansions of scenes from the TV series but mostly all-new adventures.I was going to include links to pages on every individual book, but I'm not allowed to have that many links in one post! There are already over 20 Ninjago books worldwide, either already released or due for release later this year.American Ninjago books on Barnes & NobleGerman Ninjago books by Nelson-VerlagPolish Ninjago books by AMEETDo you own any of these books? I definitely recommend many of them to any Ninjago fans, especially those who were fans of the BIONICLE books. I'm the proud owner of Kai: Ninja of Fire, Zane: Ninja of Ice, Cole: Ninja of Earth, Jay: Ninja of Lightning, and the LEGO Ninjago Official Guide. Of them, my favorite of them is Zane: Ninja of Ice, but all the ones I own are enjoyable and well-written.
  15. This comedy is not meant to insult or otherwise degrade the amazing personage of Greg Farshtey in anyway whatsoever. I am sure I have misrepresented him or his personality in some way or other, and I apologize in advance. The 40 Million Foot Tall Writer’s Block Solution Greg Farshtey, undisputed King of Bionicle, Lego Magazine editor, and Lego Ninjago writer, stumbled into Lego’s headquarters in Billund, Denmark. It had been a long night without much sleep for the father that he was, and he was feeling rather numb. Before he could think about it, he put his head down on his desk and fell asleep. 4 hours later… THUMP. Greg’s nerves jumped to attention. I am seriously going to get fired from this job, he thought, shaking his head to get the grogginess out of it. THUMP. Maybe then I will finally get to finish those old Bionicle serials. Oh, forget that. Bionicle is over. Bionicle has ended. THUMP. He stuck his head out the door to his office. People were streaming this way and that with looks of terror on their faces. “What’s going on?” said Greg. Nobody answered. I’m really going wacked. I need some fresh air. He walked past the fainted receptionist, who someone was already trying to revive, only to see something from his dreams standing unrepentantly on the Billund lawn. So tall Greg couldn’t even see the top. A towering pair of legs that bent, kneeling down, crushing a good deal of landscaping. Somewhere high above Greg could barely see a pair of eyes looking down, and within the right eye there stood a certain Toa of Fire. “Greetings, Greg Farshtey” said Toa Tahu. “Welcome aboard.” A giant robot hand extended down to the now-ruined Lego landscaping. A hatch opened, leading into the depths. A siren sounded somewhere off in the distance. “What are doing here?” demanded someone next to Greg, wearing a suit and tie and looking very miffed. “Just trying to give a poor writer a break” said an even female voice. “Oh no, you don’t. This guy signed a contract to work fifty forty-hour weeks a year minus sick leave-“ The hand extended out, tearing out the chunk of concrete that the two men were standing on, lifting them into the air. The other man cursed under his breath. Greg just stood there, stunned. “Do you have any idea what that is?” said the man. “It is…the giant robot” said Greg, his face pale. “Straight out of Bionicle.” “Straight out of a sewer, you mean” said the man. “It’s terrible.” “How can you say that? It’s amazing.” Long, gray fingers curled around the piece of concrete, forcing Greg and his new friend to the very center of the stone. As the stone was crushed to powder, the two fell though the hatch below, landing in a sticky web. “Sorry,” said a Matoran, helping them out of it. “Mission command said to ensure that you arrived undamaged. We took precautions.” Greg stood, dizzied from the slight shift in gravity. “I demand to see your leader!” said the other guy. “Who is that?” said the Matoran. He was shorter than Greg, and by his coloring recognizable as a Le-Matoran. Nearby were a couple of his kinsmen, gawking at the new arrivals. “He’s just the Lego CEO” said Greg. “Well, he is the guy would canceled Bionicle” said a black armored being who was emerging from a nearby airship. She removed her mask and flicked off her hood, revealing a pale human face. “Welcome to the Matoran Universe, gentlemen.” She glared at the Lego CEO. “Despite your failure to acknowledge us, Bionicle lives on.” * * * “Trans-dimensional travel, of course” I said. “Highly unpredictable, and I did end up in the wrong dimension, of course. I built that dimension myself, that one where the Toa overcame the Makuta using the Mask of Time. I didn’t expect to end up in it, fighting the Shadowed One at that last minute.” “You what?” “She fought the Shadowed One and won.” said another black armored being nearby. “That counts for something.” “Come on board, everyone” I barked. “We can talk on our way to Metru Nui.” * * * The Le-Metru airship lurched and accelerated rapidly toward our intended destination under the direction of our skilled pilots. “Right now, we are suffering from a small problem” I said. “Do you have a name?” said Greg. “Just call me fishers64.” “Are you like, a clone or something?” asked the Lego CEO. “No.” “Was there a fishers63? 62?” “No.” I paused, looking down at the sea below as it raced past. “The prime Bionicle reality is frozen, Mr. Farshtey. I was sent to investigate that, and ended up in that one. Fortunately, I was also able to run some schematics and dim-cross this thing back. Also, I was able to pinpoint the source of the problems we face. The prime reality being frozen, is bad news, Greg. Other, more active dimensions rub against it, causing transdimensional friction. I was able to measure that from my alternate dimension. I also know that these types of universes gather information from a single point. For the universe I was in, it was me. For the prime reality, it is you.” “What?” “If that reality doesn’t receive the data it needs from you, time stops there. This causes friction with the other realities. Eventually this friction will cause that universe to implode, causing a serious warp in space-time that will cause other realities to expand, slowing down the force of time and diluting the strong force so that no life can exist.” “What?” “In other words, you need to finish those Bionicle serials!” bellowed the Shadowed One. “Sorry” said my black armored professional bodyguard. “His prison is a little close to the airstrip.” I nodded grimly. “He is correct, however. The best weapons we have against an entire transdimensional collapse are a bit of piece and quiet for you.” Greg looked stunned. “Uh, really?” “Yes. We will make sure you have some space.” I marched onto Metru Nui, the group trailing after. Greg and the Lego CEO didn’t have a mask, so we couldn’t take the chutes. It was a bit of a hike to my headquarters in Ga-Metru, but we could manage it. * * * I ordered Lariska to guard the door against intruders, and to make sure Greg wasn’t disturbed. I had gone behind my screen and swapped armor suits. Sure, black to sky blue wasn’t as intimidating, but it put the native residents more at ease about my unusual existence. “I’m sorry you got in here” I said to the Lego CEO. “It wasn’t exactly part of the plan.” “This nonsense is costing me valuable money, young lady. I don’t want to-“ “Oh, so it is all about the money. Oh, boy. When the universe you’re in turns to a hill of beans, your money will vapourize along with you.” I paused, letting that sink in. “How about a tour of Metru Nui? It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.” I threw him a mask, which he barely caught in time. “You will need it for the chutes.” * * * The first thing Greg did upon having the room to himself was close his eyes and go back to sleep. “Time moves slightly faster in here, so you should be able to rest before you start” I had said. Sometime later, Greg got up, shook off the where-am-I feeling, and began to write, page after page, serial chapter after serial chapter… * * * “So everyone does exactly what he says, without question?” said the Lego CEO. “That’s hardly fair.” “It works for them, pal. Stop talking so loud” I hissed. We were too close to Turaga Dume. This whole thing had been one of my less amazing ideas. I checked my watch. “It’s time for you two to go home. Greg will be missed soon if we keep him much longer.” * * * When I arrived, Greg was in the midst of a sea of paper. “I’ve done it!” he said. “I’ve finally brought this to a logical conclusion!” “Good” I said, picking up the papers. “It is time to go home.” * * * “It was a pleasure meeting you two gentlemen.” I cocked my eyebrow at the Lego CEO, making sure he knew that that statement didn’t exactly apply to him. “Good luck, Mr. Farshtey.” I turned back to walk back into the robot. “Aren’t you coming with us? said Mr. CEO. “No, I have a robot to return to its proper dimension. Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon.” * * * As Greg turned back to his car, carrying the future of Bionicle story in his arms, he felt a wave of power behind him. He looked behind, just in time to see the immaculately cured lawns of Billund being restored. * * * “27 chapters for Bionicle? I thought that you said that Bionicle was over.” “I’ve had a change of heart.” “Have you been fired or something? I mean, this isn’t like you.” “Just post the chapters, Kelly.” “Do you want to stagger them or-“ “Post them all now. Bioniclestory.com was doomed yesterday. Post them all!”
  16. On Sunday my brother and I were visiting a Toys 'R' Us and thought we'd see what Bricktober sales were going on. While we didn't find any sets that caught our interest, we couldn't help but appreciate a "Buy One, Get One 50% Off" sale on LEGO books. We ended up walking off with three LEGO Ninjago books by Greg Farshtey.BIONICLE fans are familiar with Greg Farshtey as author of all the BIONICLE comics, as well as every BIONICLE book published after 2003 (and a few Exo-Force chapter books as well). Now that BIONICLE's over, he has taken the role of creative lead for LEGO Ninjago. But how does his work for this ambitious new theme measure up to his past experience with BIONICLE? Let's take a look!Title: Kai: Ninja of FireTheme: NinjagoReleased: September 1, 2011Author: Greg FarshteyPrice: $4.99 US, $5.99 CANPublisher: ScholasticThe CoverThe front cover of Kai: Ninja of Fire is exciting and colorful. The LEGO Ninjago banner familiar from the sets is stretched across the top. The picture of Kai which graces it is from the card in the set 2111 Kai, which like all the other card illustrations is very bold and detailed. You can even make out three-dimensional shape of his golden fire badge. The title is loud and striking, with a swirling word bubble promising "Two stories in one!" The Scholastic logo is squeezed onto the bottom. The back cover has a simpler layout, again starting with the LEGO Ninjago banner. The "Two stories in one!" word bubble also reappears. A short synopsis of the plot appears next to art of Kai from the "Power Up" card also included in set 2111. Below are ads for the three other LEGO Ninjago books released at the same time as this one. Two of them will also be covered in this review, although one has a key difference from the version pictured.LEGO legal information, the Scholastic logo, and the Scholastic website are featured on the bottom. I find it surprising that neither the LEGO website or the LEGO Ninjago website is advertised on the cover, but the Ninjago site does get mentioned in an ad in the back of the book. The ContentsSo what does the book include? The Table of Contents enlightens us on this matter. An introduction titled "From the Journal of Sensei Wu" starts you off, followed by a short story titled "In His Footsteps" and an eight-chapter story titled "The Vanished Villagers""From the Journal of Sensei Wu" summarizes Kai's backstory and hotheaded personality traits from Sensei Wu's point of view. Most of the information here should already be known to you if you've watched the TV special LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu. And if you haven't, what's stopping you? Hong Kong Toys 'R' Us has the videos available online for free viewing if you know where to look (The video site in question is illegal to mention here, so do NOT ask me about this in replies or PMs).This introduction is written in an ornate typeface not used anywhere else in the book. It really suits this as the only section of the book written in the first person."In His Footsteps" is a straightforward story. Kai is training with Sensei Wu but is not doing well. Sensei Wu tells Kai some stories about his father to explain why he chose Kai to be his Ninja of Fire."The Vanished Villagers" is a much more in-depth story. It takes place some time in the middle of the timeline covered in the Ninjago TV special. Kai and Zane go to the village where Zane was found by Sensei Wu, hoping to find clues to Zane's past. If this is your first Ninjago book, you probably don't know about Zane's mysterious past. But besides his inability to understand jokes and sarcasm, this proves to be his one most defining character trait, and will return to play a key role in the Ninjago.Flipping through the two story sections, it's easy to tell the book is written for kids. The text is large-print, with large graphical headers opening each chapter, graphics in the corners around the page numbers, and perhaps most surprisingly, certain words emphasized in a large, bold, and off-kilter font. You need to see it to believe it:Overall, though, the depth of the storytelling is every bit as great as it was with Farshtey's BIONICLE novels. Every character has unique personality traits which are a lot clearer here than they were in the TV special. At the same time, it's easy to imagine every line being spoken by that character's TV voice actor-- everyone remains in-character from beginning to end. Is the story as dark and serious as BIONICLE's so often was? Hardly. The skeletons are just as goofy as they are in the TV special and sets, and any schemes they create are almost Rube Goldbergian in complexity and impracticality. But at the same time, there's lots of suspense and adventure to be found throughout. The last page, by the way, includes an ad for the LEGO Ninjago Official Guide and Collector's Sticker Book. The Official Guide's blurb advertises that it "includes your very own LEGO Minifigure!" More about that later.Title: Zane: Ninja of IceTheme: NinjagoReleased: September 1, 2011Author: Greg FarshteyPrice: $4.99 US, $5.99 CANPublisher: ScholasticThe CoverThe cover of this one follows the same formula as the Kai cover. This time, though, it's Zane's card art from set 2113 Zane. It's a matter of perspective whether you prefer the greater contrast this art has against the red top and bottom borders. Personally, I find the cover of Kai's book more stylish. Still, this art is every bit as majestic as Kai's.The back cover also follows the same formula as the Kai book's back cover, but this time there's a light blue background instead of a light tan. The art is from the "Snow Surfing" cards in sets 2113 and 2257.The ContentsThis book has three sections: the introduction/bio "From the Journal of Sensei Wu", the short story "Getting the Joke", and the ten-chapter story "The Choice". I'm not taking many photos of this book because the layout is almost exactly the same as that in the Kai book, except with ice symbols every place where Kai's book has fire symbols."From the Journal of Sensei Wu" is a lot more useful here, at least for someone who has seen the television special and all the story information on LEGO.com. Once again, the format is a description of Zane's backstory and personality, but this time there's much more mystery to both. He turned up in his home village with no knowledge of where he had come from. His personality, perhaps as a result of this, is unique. He has difficulty understanding sarcasm, jokes, or even emotion. Besides his difficulty with jokes, none of these traits were touched on in the TV special."Getting the Joke" is a much more entertaining short story than "In His Footsteps" was. On patrol by himself, Zane matches wits with the oafish skeleton general Nuckal, and challenges his ability to make a joke, with hilarious results. The end result reminds me of certain chapters from the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, and shows how even absurdly-dense characters like Nuckal can be more entertaining than just a source of slapstick humor."The Choice" is an unusually dark and serious story compared to the others mentioned so far. Zane gets involved in a scheme by Lord Garmadon, and there's not much more I can reveal that doesn't reveal plot details. BIONICLE fans, though, will surely enjoy this chapter, as its writing is a testament to the brilliant writing that made the BIONICLE story what it was. It proves that Lord Garmadon is every bit as devious a villain as Makuta Teridax from the BIONICLE story, and there are plenty of the complicated schemes-within-schemes which that character was known for. The conclusion of this story caught me completely by surprise, and it was this story that truly convinced me the Ninjago books are no more childish than the BIONICLE chapter books that preceded them.Overall, I recommend Zane: Ninja of Ice to anyone who wants a deeper and more fulfilling experience from the Ninjago theme. In addition to the two books I've mentioned, two similar books for the other two ninjas are due for release in January 2012. Keep your eyes peeled for these two books, which will probably include the intriguingly-titled stories "The Dragon's Roar" and "The Real Hero" also seen in two books already published by Polish publisher AMEET.Title: LEGO Ninjago Official GuideTheme: NinjagoReleased: September 1, 2011Author: Greg FarshteyPrice: $7.99 US, $8.99 CANPublisher: ScholasticThe CoverAlright, although I call this section "The Cover", it's going to start by talking about the contents. Take a look at the cover pictured here (the "Only at Toys 'R' Us" bubble is just a sticker I haven't removed yet). The book's cover, measuring 9 inches by 6 inches (larger than the two chapter books), contains a stylish graphic of Sensei Wu and the four Ninjas. It's a promotional image also seen many other places, and many of the component pics are just mashed together from card art, but it still has all the sophistication of the other covers. But let's ignore that for a minute. What is not visible on this cover? That's right. There's no minifigure included with this book! Other than the lack of a minifigure, the guide book seems almost identical to the one shown on the back covers of the other two books. According to Amazon.co.uk, the one with the minifigure's due for release in January 2012. One wonders if that means there will be other differences, besides the bonus fig. There are a couple of errors in this edition which I hope would get corrected by that time. The back cover features the art from the card "Finders Keepers" found in set 2256 Lord Garmadon. Very stylish. You're going to get very used to seeing zoomed-in card art after reading this book. A brief synopsis appears right below the art, followed by the regular LEGO and Scholastic corporate info.ContentsThe first difference you're likely to notice between this book and the two others, upon opening the book, is that this book is printed in full color on glossy paper. The book begins with an introduction, followed by several sections with deeper information on particular parts of the Ninjago universe.Inside, the text is still large and easy-to-read. Some words are still in a differently-colored bold font for emphasis, just like in the chapter books, but none are off-kilter like in the other two books. Additionally, the bonus story at the end is almost entirely without these bolded words, somewhat inverting the style used in the other two books.Anyway, the introduction reveals to us that most of this book (besides the bonus story) will be described by Sensei Wu. "The Legend of Ninjago" then describes the backstory for the theme: how the father of Wu and Garmadon created the four weapons of Spinjitzu and the world, and how Garmadon betrayed Wu and was cast into the underworld. The book is full of high-quality card art, so much so that it would be pointless to try naming all the cards the art comes from. In the "Characters" section, naturally, each character's bio begins with that character's card art. Unfortunately, this means the book doesn't include the character card art of the black-robed Sensei Wu, nor does it include the character card art of the DX ninjas. What it does include is the character art of Samukai, which is otherwise rather hard to find-- he doesn't have a proper poster of this art on the Ninjago website, nor does he have an actual character card. Each character bio also includes an additional piece of card art, a fact box with up to six facts about each character (which can be different for each one-- some may have a favorite color listed and others may not), and a "Ninja Notes" box with additional trivia about the characters. The exception to this trend is Samukai, who doesn't appear on any card art. Instead, his bio includes a rather egregious preliminary photo of him facing off against a prototype Zane minifigure. Also in the realm of weird errors, all the character traits of Kruncha and Nuckal are reversed. A similar mistake occurred this year in the Hero Factory theme-- some story information would have character traits for the heroes Nex and Evo reversed. In that case, the reason was that the characters had their names switched between the initial story conception and the final story that appeared in TV specials. I wonder if something similar occurred here. However, there is still a lot of new information in this guide book. For instance, we learn some actual information about the roles and personalities of the four skeleton soldiers who had not previously been identified by name in story materials. For instance, Bonezai is a "mad scientist" character who comes up with all the skeleton vehicles, while Chopov is the skeletons' chief mechanic. This book also shares info on other characters which was largely absent from the Ninjago website, such as mention of Zane's mysterious past and the skeleton general Wyplash's role as a spy for the skeleton army. This last fact is somewhat amusing when you consider his absence from the Ninjago TV special (although he appears in a couple of the two-minute mini movies from the Ninjago website)-- it's alluded to that even the other skeletons aren't sure when he's around, leading my brother to joke that "he's a better ninja than the actual ninjas!"The "Dragons" section describes the mysterious nature of the dragons, only alluded to in the TV special. According to the book, they may come from another dimension, explaining why they are capable of traveling between the world of Ninjago and the underworld. They are also extremely wise, and each Ninja tamed their dragon for the fight against Garmadon in a unique way suited to their character. I expect the taming of the Lightning Dragon, at least, will appear in other books: the short story from AMEET's Jay book is titled "The Dragon's Roar", which seems to tie in nicely with the description in this book of how Jay tamed the Lightning Dragon. The "Skeleton Vehicles" section features some specifications for the vehicles, but nothing that really plays a significant role in the story. There are also some anecdotes about each vehicle. The "Becoming a Ninja" section is entertaining, but doesn’t reveal any useful story details-- it just describes some of the values Sensei Wu tried to instill into his four elemental ninja. It also shares some of his training techniques. The "Spinjitzu" section that follows it is a simple FAQ about the art of Spinjitzu, though it reveals some new facts such as that the skeletons were, in fact, trained in Spinjitzu by Lord Garmadon. This is something that's been somewhat ambiguous elsewhere (they never use Spinjitzu in the TV special or online mini-movies), so it's good to know that the spinners for skeleton characters actually make some sense in the story. The "Dragons", "Skeleton Vehicles", "Becoming a Ninja", "Spinjitzu", “Four Weapons of Spinjitzu”, and "Locations" sections don't have much in the way of card art-- almost all of the art is from the sets, although there are several screenshots from the TV special (particularly in the Locations section). The only problem I’ve found with any of these sections is that the picture of the Nunchuks of Lightning actually depicts the one-handled weapon of Zane DX, not the Nunchuks of Lightning themselves. Of course, the Nunchuks of Lightning have been built inconsistently in sets anyway. Finally, there is the short story “Ice Ambush.” It is mostly just an expanded version of how the four ninja retrieved the Shurikens of Ice as shown in the TV special. It is not nearly as interesting as the stories in the more dedicated “storybooks”, in my personal opinion, but it still a much richer experience than the mostly dialogue-free scene it is based on.The book ends with a somewhat cliché-sounding conclusion about how the future of the land of Ninjago is uncertain and its fate is in your hands. But overall, the book is great fun—the fantastic artwork plays a key role in it—and fulfills a similar function to similar BIONICLE guide books from years past. With that in mind, I can’t say that it would be nearly as enjoyable to someone who wasn’t already a dedicated fan of the theme. Its presentation of story information in the form of brief tidbits isn’t nearly as rich or immersive as the storytelling style of the other two books, even though it is a lot more enlightening with regards to the Ninjago story than any of the web resources on LEGO.com.OverallOverall, I would recommend all of the Ninjago books to either LEGO fans already interested in the theme or BIONICLE fans looking for an engaging and well written story. Although chronologically the stories in Kai: Ninja of Fire come first, I’d personally recommend starting with Zane: Ninja of Ice. It’s the most thrilling of the books and will be a good place to test to see if the stories actually appeal to you. It also gives you a deeper understanding of Zane’s character than either of the other books.Ninjago doesn’t often seem to be recognized for being a successor to BIONICLE. When it is, it’s usually in a negative light, with BIONICLE fans unable to see why TLG is treating this phenomenon as the biggest thing since BIONICLE. But Ninjago truly has the potential to be every bit as great as BIONICLE was in terms of storytelling, especially under Greg Farshtey’s creative direction. One only hopes that the upcoming television series and future books live up to the standard the theme has already established for itself!
