  1. So, what's the last book you read? I just recently finished Jonathan Lethem's Gun, With Occasional Music. A great blend of detective and dystopian fiction.
  2. (Let me preface this topic by stating that I'm pretty sure this isn't quite the proper subforum for this topic, however I'm not entirely sure where it would fit. It's more of a showcase of various Bionicle media more than anything). Some of you may know me for my 2001 Rahi Revamps or my Bionicle: Audio-Narration Project, but for those of you who do not, I am Joev14, owner of Infinite Inspiration Incorporated. As a huge collector of Bionicle, and of Lego in general, most people are impressed to hear I own every single Bionicle set from 2001-2010 and 2015-2016 (including Click, Klakk, and Turaga Lhikan, while excluding all other non-canon promo sets). However, while I am personally proud of my collection of sets, I am in many ways even more proud of my collection of Bionicle Literature. Over the years I have not only collected every chapter book, but also every other piece of literature and media you can imagine, from comics, to games, to physical copies of story serials. So get ready for a showcase of every piece of story material you might need to immerse yourself completely, in the world of Bionicle. For reference, I plan on creating physical editions of The Crossing, Journey's End, and a compiled edition of all the Bionicle short stories. 3. This is the rebirth of a previous topic of similar name. So, just list down the last book you read, maybe put a description and/or review (hopefully spoiler-free), and produce small comments or conversations about books listed here (usually based off of someone's description/review). Alright, I have a few. New 53 Aquaman Vol. 4: Death of a King By Geoff Johns In short, this book was epic and was flawless, and along with Throne of Atlantis it was written like a movie and as such should be used for an Aquaman movie. It needs to be the plot for a movie. Arthur Curry also grows a beard in this (finally!). The art in the book was beautiful. Death of a King was the last title for Geoff Johns run on Aquaman and finishes up just about every plot line introduced since the reboot. Aquaman and The Others Vol. 1: Legacy of Gold By Dan Jurgens Legacy of Gold had an interesting story and was an adventure, though not nearly as epic as Death of a King. It explored more backstory to King Atlan and the complete origin of the Talismans of Atlan. The story I felt could have been done better at times (like I am curious on how the really old man Legend had children). It was cool to see some paranormal stuff (especially rooted Apache myths), like seeing Vostok again as a ghost, as well as seeing Arizona get featured (I even went to the featured reservation earlier this year ). The coloring and art in-general on this book was great, but it felt lacking in comparison to the main-line Aquaman graphic novels. New 52 Batman Vol. 2: City of Owls By Scott Snyder It has been a while since I read this one, but from what I remember I loved this. City of Owls concludes the plot from the previous book Court of Owls, but there is a third Owl book that comes after Batman Vol. 3, so I am intrigued by what that story could be. And I was shocked by the revelation of Mr. Freeze's origin. Maybe he isn't so innocent after all... Great art as always, the detailed edginess fits Gotham City very well. New 52 The Flash Vol. 1: Moving Forward By Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato Great story, very well written for being the two authors first time writing. A nice change for me from the edgy Batman and the rising to power story that is Aquaman, as it is reminiscent of older comic books, not heavy with overly serious themes, even though it just barely touched on a couple. The title pages are even nostalgic, shwoing artistic ways to write out the following into the environment, "DC comics presents: THE FLASH! In... *insert title here*". Just nice little things like that are weird in a good way. There a couple of references to Flashpoint, but if you never read those like I haven't then you should be fine (I only have the animated movie to go off of). If you want smart writing that literally has a fast pace and beautiful art work, please do go read this. Absolute Sandman Vol. 1 by Neil Gaiman First off, this book is huge and heavy (I have it in hard-cover), it was hard to read it sometimes because of this and other times when I walk around the house with it I felt like I was holding a holy book of some sort. ; okay, now that that is out of the way.... Absolute Sandman Vol.1 is a must-read, and is very mythological. It gives insight into the metaphysical properties of the post-Crisis DC Universe and stands well on it's own if you are not involved with the rest of DC Comics. The art has shown it's age sometimes but for it's time it is great. But the writing is even better, forging a story that will no doubt be carried down hundreds of years from now and even further. Half-way into the book I forgot about Dream's brief contact with the Justice League and felt that I was in a unique world. A word of warning though: this graphic novel, or omnibus, whatever, is very mature. It has nudity, brutal killings, graphic fictional depictions of Heck, and discusses mature themes, so tread carefully. If none of that stuff bothers you, go right on ahead and read it already! I am currently reading Absolute Sandman Vol. 2. So, everyone else, post what books you read recently! Doesn't have to be as thorough as what I did, just read something.
  4. Well, this here's the story of what happened to a man named Azaran. Not those lies they tell you about kidnappings and burlap sacks, but his actual misadventures. This here tale I'm-a going to unfold, happened in about the hundr'd1 n' fifties. As in, 'tween hundr'd n' fifty, and 59. How do I know what happened? Well, technically I was there, man. Now, don'chu be confuddled, Azaran isn't the main protagonist. Neither am I. This chronicle revolves around a man named Kandarii. He's a professional fisherman. Not in the good way, like, being on the telly (Which, I dunno, may or may not happ'n.). He's a pro fisherman in the other way, as in, it's his only source of income. That, n' bein' a guitarist. Enough of my ramblings, we....we.... Oh, let's just start the dern'd story. What Really Happened to Azeran ACT I Metru-Nui, mid 150's, BGC CHAPTER ONE Kandarii had been wandering about the plains, when a small boy approached him. The small boy asked him, "Want to play Hide-and-Seek?" Kandarii's reply was, "Well, sure." So, the boy began to count down from 10, and Kandarii fled at full sprint. He ran through the field, past the All-Mart, and all the way until he was in Ga-Metru. He didn't stop there. He continued until he was on a large building. Looking behind him, he thought, No regrets. He leaped. It was a dry and sandy day in the deserts, somewhere, when an unknown figure came tumbling down from a cliff-side. He landed abruptly. Yes, it's Kandarii. Kandarii without a beard, and dressed in a hood, tunic, robes, fancy trousers, and fresh looking boots. He had a scimitar, for some reason. He kept running, looking behind him for the small boy he thought was pursuing him. He found an oasis. He jumped in the water, hoping for a good place to hide. He resurfaced a few seconds later. It was midnight, he had a shotgun, and eyed Super Mutants. Run, he thought. And so he did. Before long, the super mutants had disappeared from view. He was still being chased by the boy, he was sure. He entered a shack. After short while, he exited the shack. What happened? He was in combat armor, back in Ga-Metru, and armed with a...musket. What were these, abominations? They looked and smelt like dinosaurs, but were yelling in bizarre, deep voices. Ultimately, he was crushed. Kandarii woke up abruptly. What...What happened? He asked himself. He was in his bed, and it appeared that someone poured apple juice on his pants. So he got out of bed, got dressed, and groggily prepared breakfast, contemplating his dreams. A knock on the door. He opened it, slowly. Outside was a small boy, who began to ask: "Want to-" Kandarii slammed the door in the boy's face. You see, he looks almost exactly like the boy in his dreams. Another knock on the door. Kandarii opens it again, to see Azaran, his good friend, and the local drunkard2. He was sober, for the time being. He looked similar to Kandarii, in the way he had a beard, a hunting hat, and a stylish, old-fashioned pair of glasses. "What is up, Fishman?" He asked. "I had this bizarre dream." Kandarii reported. "Dude, you probably shouldn't have eaten so much fish. I hear the pollution makes the fish, make people sick." "C'mon, Azeran. we both know that's a load." 1. It's a dialect. Misspellings are on purpose. 2. Metru-Nui can't really have a "Town Drunk" because it's simply too big.
  5. Here's the deal: I'm the only one I know not on the internet who loves Bionicle. So when friends, classmates, whoever asks the question, "What's your favorite book?" I have a real hard time explaining that I love Bionicle more than anything I've ever read, and why I love it. I actually love it because it's the only book series I know that is a universe about just robots with serious emotions--no humans. That's one reason why it's awesome. But I love literature, film analysis, and literary analysis as well. Being in the middle of my busy life, I don't have the time to score through great works of literature, so here's my question: What works of literature could you compare with the Bionicle books and movies? Anything. Characters, events, identity crises, emotions, locations of Bionicle that can be compared to literature. We, as fans, already know that Bionicle is worth our passion, but this would give people who see the word LEGO on the covers proof that Bionicle is not just a 12-year-olds' ambition to buy toys. Greg worked too hard for it to be just that.
  6. [Author's note: Sinister Forces takes place after the end of the official BIONICLE story, several years after Journey's End. This epic is told from the POV of Toa Itahnu, a Mage/Warrior person. He is going to have to do some interesting things. Read on! But first, you must now this: footnotes. an asterisk indicates one. Or, if there is more than one, a small number marks one. Such as, this: 1.] Part I Chapter 1 In a small-and I mean, really small- city somewhere east of Tesara, was a small residence in which a sort of wizard lived. This wizard was named Itahnu. Yes, you're speaking to him now. I assure you, anything and everything told in this story of mine is completely true. So, in this small dwelling was Yours Truly, simply practicing the ancient craft of Alchemy. Whilst mixing a healing potion, I decided to take a break from my work to check my mailbox. I walked outside and opened a metal box on a metal pole. Sure enough, there was a box marked, "Steel Wool!" I had ordered some of the substance to see if it actually existed. What magnificent and hardy livestock would produce wool made of steel!? So I excitedly opened the package before exclaiming, "This is not wool at all!*" It was a sort of wiry mesh, bundled into a small, brittle sphere of metal. But, at that exact moment, a party of rough adventurers passed through. One gestured towards me, and said: "Say, you're a mage, right? We need a mage." An archer pulled on the man's sleeve, and said, "We don't have time to recruit random civilians to assist us. We already have a pyromancer." So, the group moved on. Later that day, I bumped into an armored swordsman in the market. He simply stated, "Well, that was odd." and went on his way. It was much, much later that I realized this was something of significance. So I bought my groceries and went home. When my hut was reached, I found a piece of parchment on the ground at my feet. And so, I began to read... [*Reference to The Last Stand: Union City.]

I just received my two copies of Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges: one book in English, el otro en español. The book consists of seventeen of his best short stories, and I believe that I even managed to find a decent translation (read: not Hurley's). yay
  8. Gravedigger 2: The gallows-maker, for that frame outlives a thousand tenants. Gravedigger 1: I like thy wit well in good faith. The gallows does well, but how does it well? It does well to those that do ill. [...] To't again, come. Gravedigger 2: Who builds stronger than a mason, a shipwright, or a carpenter? Gravedigger 1: Ay, tell me that, and unyoke. [...] Gravedigger 2: Mass, I cannot tell. Gravedigger 1: Cudgel thy brains no more about it [...] and when you are asked this question next, say a grave-maker. The houses he makes lasts till doomsday. Gravedigger 1 would have to be my favourite Hamlet character. Witty fellow. And yes, studying Hamlet too much will result in randomly quoting it.
  9. This is a fairly open question that I'm sure everyone here has their views on, and everyone has different things that they look for.If I may first start out with main characters, I like it when a character can be distinctively female without it defining them, much like how a male lead character can be a lead without you having to think "Oh, he's male". There are many works of fiction with male lead characters that many people relate to and admire, even female viewers, and I like it when I as a male find myself relating to a female character in spite of the gender barrier. When a female character can be everything a male character can be without being conspicuous (and without losing her femininity, obviously), that to me is a great achievement. So some examples of certain favorites of mine:Dorothy Gale: I'm referring to generally all her incarnations. I've both read the book and seen the movie, and seen a few hosh-posh sequels and a few ooh-aah sequels. Then I've read an awesome web-comic that's put a sci-fi twist on all of it. In all cases, she's a pretty spiffy person who, in spite of being rather cheesy, came before the modern push to make every character completely new. Therefore, I can admire her for the simple, likable, nice person she is, with simple and easily accessible dreams shared by almost everyone.Alice: From Alice and Wonderland. Of course, it's hard to get past the bias that it's a literary classic that thousands of authors have put their own creative twist on (it was kind of set up that way), but if you get past all the Wonderland stuff, if she's written well she's the quintessential example of a character who proactively works against extraordinary circumstances that would render most characters passive.Wendy Darling: While on the subject of girls who travel to far off fantasy lands, I might as well complete the triad. Whether or not she's the main character is questionable, as often times she's overshadowed by the titular character Peter Pan. However, if one does choose to consider her as the main character and interpret the story from her point of view, she is an awesome older sister and a perfect contrast for Peter Pan. The relationship between them can at times be intensely interesting and curious. Though not the most robust, she is the most complex and developed character in what is the ultimate coming-of-age story.Matilda: From the movie of the same name. That is one of the most awesome children's movies ever. And it was awesome seeing a child who was that smart, because I was very similar at that age.Lucy and Susan:The two girls in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.Ellen Ripley: I thought that the directors were doing a pretty good job of portraying her until the third movie onward (although I didn't mind when they shaved her head). Entertainment Weekly said that not only was she not just some model, but neither was she "defined by the men around her".Josephine March: Louisa May Alcott's true, sincere portrait of herself is filled with such genuine heart that she's as real as the person she represents. I must applaud her. Jo is a beautiful person.Your Honor,Emperor Kraggh
  10. I finished reading Inheritance a few days after it came out. Overall, I would call it a fairly good book, although there are certain things that I would definitely have done different had I been writing. However, I don't question the author's judgment. He wanted the series to go a certain way, and it didn't turn out bad.I can see how this book might not be for certain people, especially with the 120-page-long ending.Random other thoughts:- My favorite cover was definitely Brisingr. Personally, I was hoping that Paolini would expand the series again so that there would be a book with Shruikan on the cover, but ah well. Like I said within the spoiler, it would have been awesome if Eragon was trapped in the castle for a longer time and there was a whole book dedicated to him living under Galbatorix. It would have been so personal.- I can truly say that the main character was my favorite, because the extent of his curiosity interests me.- Hey, they're a very interesting read and, even though the language is a bit convoluted, it fits the story very well. Besides, there's the guilty pleasure of knowing that, when I'm not kept in check, I write just like that when I don't keep myself in check.Your Honor,Emperor Kraggh

    Dead Or Alive

It's mine. As some of you may have heard, Borders filed for bankruptcy and are closing a bunch of stores. A few of those happen to be close to my house [actually, all three that are close to me are closing]. While that's obviously sad, it also means that there's sales. Everything was 20-40% off, and some things were even cheaper. I ended up with Dead Or Alive, along with two other books: Point of Impact and Night of Thunder, both by Stephen Hunter. I've wanted to get Tom Clancy's new book since it came out, so this was my excuse to. The other two books I got because of the movie Shooter. When I saw that for the first time, it became one of my favorite movies, and I love the character Bob Lee Swagger [and Mark Wahlberg does a supurb job as him] -- I mean, he's a Marine, and a Sniper. So of course, once I learned that it was based off the first book in a series written by Stephen Hunter, I immediately became interested, and started looking for the first in the series [Point of Impact, renamed Shooter for the movie]. Hadn't been able to find it at any used bookstore, so decided to get it here. Usually I only get one of a series until I decide if I like it, but Night of Thunder was only $4.79 after the discount, and in hardback, so I figured why not. I think I'll probably go back, though, as I'm sure they'll have even bigger sales. While my dad was waiting in the checkout ['cause these books are part of a belated Christmas-gift-thing . . . long story], I was still looking around and found two other books that I really wanted: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas and The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, by J.R.R. Tolkien [published in '09 by Christopher Tolkien]. The latter especially. But I decided I'd wait to see if I can get a better price or, in the latter's case, find it in hardback, as it was only in paperback there. Though of course if every book in Borders was only a dollar, I'd practically buy out the store, because there were so many books that I wanted. Hopefully I'll be able to find them at a used bookstore. Anyway, after I finish the Brad Thor series I'm on, I'll read DoA -- so excited! I mean, heck, it's been the one of the top five New York Times Bestsellers for 10 weeks now [and it's still on it], including the #1 Bestseller. And it's Clancy. And it's Jack Ryan. Really looking forward to reading it, since the only book I've read by him is Patriot Games, unfortunately. Speaking of, recently saw Sum of All Fears for the first time. Didn't really like Ben Affleck; Alec Baldwin definitely does a better job in The Hunt For Read October. But man is it long [950 pages]. Gonna be the longest thing I've ever read. In other news, I'm really enjoying the BZPRPG. If you haven't, you should really consider joining. It's great. Oh, and three day weekend; yes! - Velox Currently reading: The Lions of Lucerne, by Brad Thor
  12. You know, I gotta hand it to the man; as much as I hate slogging through Sons and Lovers, DH Lawrence is really, really good at writing frikkin' creepy, screwed up relationships. As if the aforementioned novel wasn't enough proof of that, The Prussian Officer has got so much twisted homoeroticism going on between the protagonist and eponymous character that I think I'd seriously eat my hat if it wasn't intended to come off that way. DH Lawrence, why are you so creepyyyyy... --
  13. Okay, so, I have the following books by J.R.R. Tolkien: -The Hobbit -The Lord of the Rings -The Children of Hurin -The Silmarillion -Unfinished Tales -A Tolkien Miscellany [smith of Wootton Major, Farmer Giles of Ham, Tree and Leaf, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight] I've read the Hobbit a few times, though the only thing I remember from it is Smaug with his gold. =P I'm pretty sure I've read LotR at least once, but I'm not sure if I actually ever got through them completely. The rest I haven't read at all. So. I'm wondering in what order should I read everything? According to this one site, it seems like I should do: -The Silmarillion -The Children of Hurin -Unfinished Tales -The Hobbit -LotR Though it doesn't mention the stories in A Tolkien Miscellany [and I'm almost positive he's written other things, too], so yeah. Anyone read all [or most] of the above and have an opinion of what order they should be read? On the subject of books, I just finished Extreme Measures by Vince Flynn. Which means I only have Pursuit of Honor to read until I've read all of his works. I want to read them again, lol, but I'm going to read other stuff that I haven't read first, Tolkien's stuff being one of those things. Also! What do you guys think of the Chronicles of Narnia? This is the second thing I want to know. The only book I remember reading the whole thing [though I barely remember it] is the Magician's Nephew, though I think I read up to The Horse and His Boy, but don't remember. Anyway, I know there's a couple different orders for those as well, so once again your thoughts will be appreciated. Though I do wonder if I should even bother reading them? I've been seeing mixed thoughts -- some people say they're children's books, and that I liked them when I read them, but probably wouldn't like them now. Yet some people say they're great works and I'd still like them, so yeah. Has anyone read the Screwtape Letters, too? I'll definitely be reading that, but I just wanted to know if anyone's read it and if they liked it or not. Aaand that's about it [i hope I didn't scare people away with this long entry -- I'd really like some replies lol]. Thanks, all. - Velox
  14. Thanks for the posts in my last entry, guys. I'm still not quite sure about what order I'll read the Tolkien stuff in [i also hope to get more of his stuff], but I probably won't read them until summer anyway. So, a few days ago I finished the last of Vince Flynn's books. The only thing I can say is I wish there were more. =P Really, all twelve were the best books I have read. Though, I actually haven't read that much, as up until a few months ago I didn't do much reading. But still, I really, really enjoyed them. My favorite? Ah, geez, don't make me do this. =P I guess if I had to choose it might be the last three books he's written: Extreme Measures, Pursuit of Honor, and American Assassin. The first two because the second is a continuation of the same story as the first. And while you don't need to read them both [all books can be read on their own, though I suggest reading them chronologically], the story was quite good. Then American Assassin because it's Mitch Rapp's [the main character in all but one of Vince Flynn's books] recruitment, training, and first kill with the CIA. It's just so full of character and action and awesomeness. =P I must warn you, though; there is quite a lot of swearing. And violence, of course. So, basically, they're like the Clancy books. Anyway, so I'm looking for more book suggestions again [i'm looking back at my two previous entries, too]. Here are some books that I'm already planning on getting that were recommended outside of BZP: -Point of Impact -- Stephen Hunter [first in the Bob Lee Swagger series, which sounds cool] -The Moonstone -- Wilkie Collins [it's considered the first detective books in English] -Something by Brian Haig [no, that's not the book's name -- literally, I want to get something by him, as Vince Flynn is making a series co-written with him] -1984 -- George Orwell -War and Peace -- Leo Tolstoy -The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy -- Douglas Adams -The Grapes of Wrath -- John Steinbeck -Of Mice and Men -- John Steinbeck [could've sworn I had this, as I've read it before, but I can't find it, so if I see it for cheap I'll get it] -The Kite Runner -- Khaled Hosseini -Dune -- Frank Herbert -Count of Monte Cristo -- Alexandre Dumas -Moby Dick -- Herman Melville -Les Miserables -- Victor Hugo [that's gonna take forever to read, if I ever do, but it'd be cool to have] -Whose Body? -- Dorothy Sayers [her first book, and supposedly it's good to read them in order for sake of character development] -Starship Troopers -- Robert Heinlein -Red Planet -- Robert Heinlein -Have Spacesuit Will Travel -- Robert Heinlein -Last Man Standing -- David Baldacci -The Sniper -- Nelson DeMille -Liars and Thieves -- Steven Coonts -Something Wicked Comes This Way -- Ray Bradbury -The Shadow of the Wind -- Carlos Ruiz Zafon -Heart of Darkness -- Joseph Conrad -The Bourne Series -- Robert Ludlum [i already have Identity, so I'll read that before I buy more] I haven't read any of those [except Of Mice and Men], so if anyone has I'd like to hear your opinions. And, as I said, any other suggestions would be great [i hope to read a book a week]. Some of them I probably won't read for a while [specifically War and Peace/Les Miserables/Count of Monte Cristo =P], but I think they'd still be cool to have and read at some point. Also, one last question, for those fans of Tom Clancy: What order should his stuff be read in [specifically his Jack Ryan series]? Chronological, publication, or just random? Thanks everyone. Currently reading Path of the Assassin, by Brad Thor. - Velox
  15. That is what American Assassin is right now. And it was only released on the twelfth this month. And let me tell you. It deserves it. Just finished reading it after getting it at that book signing on Wednesday [and with school and basketball, it wasn't easy to read it so quick -- but it kept me hooked, and I couldn't put it down]. Awesome lecture, too, that he gave. But anyway, back to the book itself. I will say it wasn't quite what I expected. But it was amazing. It delved into Mitch Rapp's character a lot, and just allowed for a fascinating read with fascinating characters. It kept me hooked the whole way. I don't want to give anything away, so I won't say what specifically I liked, etc., etc. But I really don't think you'll be disappointed if you pick it up. And it's the best time, too! If you're new to Vince Flynn, this is the perfect time to start. Besides Term Limits, this is the first book in the Mitch Rapp series. Y'see, he wrote TL as a standalone novel, which didn't include Mitch Rapp at all. He then wrote ten novels with Mitch Rapp, which did include some characters from TL. Anyway, in AA, he tells the beginning of Mitch Rapp, how he became a CIA agent, his first kill, and more. So if you haven't read a Mitch Rapp book yet, why not read AA first? That's what I did [i've only read Term Limits besides AA]. And so you see, it really is the best time to start on Vince Flynn's stuff. Though of course go ahead and read TL first -- it's interesting to see some of the characters transfer over from that into AA. So yeah, I know I've been advertising Vince Flynn a lot lately, but really, he deserves it. #1 New York Times Bestseller just after one week of the book being released. Anyway, since my last book entry, I have gotten a few other books. This is because I was looking for The Third Option -- the last Vince Flynn book I need -- and so I went to several used bookstores where I unfortunately did not find it, but did pick up some other stuff [i decided to order TTO on Amazon]: Agatha Christie's Detectives. Five Complete Novels: The Murder at the Vicarage, Dead Man's Folly, Sad Cypress, Towards Zero, N or M?. Hey, it's five Agatha Christie novels, so no explanation necessary [though unless I find another "collection" (more than one novel in a book) I'm done with buying mystery for now, since I'm reading more thrillers at the moment -- once I finish everything I have I'll start buying again, lol]. Marine -- Tom Clancy. No, not a novel. But a non-fiction reference book. And by Tom Clancy. So I thought it'd be good reference, considering two of my characters are Marines. Velocity -- Dean Koontz. I enjoyed Night Chills [though I actually didn't quite finished, because I got American Assassin and started reading that instead =P] and this one sounded cool. Separation of Power -- Vince Flynn. The second-to-last book I needed. And it was hardback, so I was very happy [i only have two of his books that are paperback, the rest are hardback].The Complete Guide to Middle Earth -- J.R.R. Tolkien. Do I really need an explanation to this? Fool Moon -- Jim Butcher. Next in the Dresden Files series -- I loved Storm Front, so decided to get the next one.Mirror Image -- Tom Clancy. This and the three below are the first in their respective series. After I'm done reading a bunch of other stuff, I thought that I'd try all of Clancy's series, so I got the first of these three. Hidden Agendas -- Tom ClancyPolitika -- Tom ClancyPortraits of Murder -- Alfred Hitchcock. 47 murder short stories, picked by the great man himself. Of course I got it.The Bourne Identity -- Robert Ludlum. Heard this series was really good, and finally found the first one [i've seen Ultimatum and Supremacy a lot, but not Identity]. Will look forward to reading this some time.Path of the Assassin -- Brad Thor. Another thriller writer that I've heard is very good, and this sounded like the most interesting out of what they had.And now for the last topic of discussion: NaNoWriMo. Am I doing it? I really do hope so. However, I am not doing the 50k. Think whatever you want of me, I don't care. The fact is that I haven't written a single story over ~5k. Furthermore, I've been extremely busy lately, with school, basketball, and just life in general. Lastly, I haven't written in a long time. I don't think I've written a thousand words with this month and last month combined [basically the only fiction writing I've been doing is for school]. And so, I'm starting small. This is the first time I'm doing this after all. And if I can get over 20k, I will be extremely proud of myself. What will I be writing? That novel I've been talking about for over a year now. I've got it pretty much all outlined, I have the prologue and part of the first chapter written, I like what I'm doing with it, and I know what I'm going to do with it. The last thing that remains [and has been remaining since ~summer] is for me to write it, which I hope NaNoWriMo will offer sufficient motivation to do so. Oh, and this year [school-wise] is really gonna suck. Especially because in my favorite class [English] I have one of the worst teachers and she hates me. Ah well. I don't like her either. =P I just wish I had my Freshman English teacher, who I still talk to a lot just because of how awesome he is and how good of a teacher he is. Which is actually another motivation for my novel. He likes my writing, and so I really hope to be able to show him my completed novel before I graduate. Which gives me a little more than a year and a half. But anyway, enough of my rambling on [no one likes to read these long entries, do they?] -- gotta go clean and do some other stuff, and then I'll start Transfer of Power, aka the first of the Mitch Rapp series after American Assassin. - Velox
  16. The anticipation is going to kill me. THREE MORE DAYS. For those that don't know [like, everyone, probably], this is Vince Flynn's newest book, just released in stores everywhere October 12th. I'm getting it on the 20th at the Ronald Regan Presidential Library book signing by Vince Flynn where I get to meet him and, obviously, receive an autographed copy of his new book, as well as listen to a talk by him. Even cooler is that he'll sign any other hardback books I have, which means that I'll have nine signed books by him [his other three that I have are paperback, unfortunately]. But anyway I'm so excited because I've been waiting to read all of his books since I read Term Limits last month. I've been waiting until I get all of his books so that I can read them all in order, and now I have all of them besides AA. Though! Even more more awesome is that AA is actually a prequel to all of his other books, meaning I can read it first and then read the rest, which will be the chronological order! Which is so awesome because AA sounds so amazing. It's all about Mitch Rapp's [his main character] beginning -- how he became an assassin, his first kill, etc. So yes, because of my excitedness, I put you through reading my ramblings. And I probably made a bunch of confusing sentences but I don't care because I'M SO EXCITED and I'm sick so yeah [which is also the reason I haven't been active lately --with school, basketball, homework, and sickness, that basically means school, basketball, dinner, bed]. Will be more active soon. But enough of that. I'm off to bed. - Velox

    More Books?

Indeed, indeed. I was running errands today and thought I'd stop by a used bookstore that I had never been to before and only ~five minutes away from my house. I only got seven things [lol only -- you'll see why later, but there was actually a very good selection there], mostly due to the price/quality of books. Though I'm being unfair, because these are actually pretty good prices [i'll list the prices] for a used bookstore. It's just that Book Off has really good prices. A row of $1 paperback; a row of unspecified paperbacks, which the most is usually $4 at most, usually less; a row of $1 hardback; and lastly a wall [and a little more] of $5 hardback books. And all of them are in really good condition. Some are a little used, but most are like new [they must get them from various publishers or something]. So yeah, I'd say these prices are pretty good for a normal used bookstore: Memorial Day -- Vince Flynn. $6.95. Definitely worth the price -- it's a hardback, and even though it's not five bucks, it's still good and is in good condition. Transfer of Power -- Vince Flynn. $6.95. Good condition, price could be a little less, due to being paperback, but that's probably just me. Got this and the one above because they're two of the four that I need [they had a third that I still needed, but it wasn't in very good condition] until I have all of his.The Children of Hurin -- J.R.R. Tolkien. $6.95. Oh my goodness, yes! I've been looking for this for a while now [heard it's good, and Tolkien is awesome], and it is in VERY good condition, as well as hardback. A Tolkien Miscellany -- J.R.R. Tolkien. $6.95. Another that I guess could be cheaper, for being paperback, but is in very good condition. And this I've never seen before, and looked awesome. Includes Smith of Wootton Major, Farmer Giles of Ham, Tree and Leaf, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Night Chills -- Dean Koontz. $0.25. Haha, definitely worth the price. But it was on a special section, so yeah [and is in fairly good condition]. Anyway, I've been told this guy is good, so thought I'd try one out [and it's only twenty-five cents, so why not].Sniper -- Adrian Gilbert. $2.95. This is the main one that I think should have been a lot less [like $0.25 or a dollar at the most], but they wouldn't make it lower than this [it was originally a dollar more, but I talked them into this =P]. I guess it's not that bad of condition, but if was a normal book I wouldn't have bought it. Only got it because it's a reference on snipers, and since two of my main characters are snipers, I thought it'd be good reference. So yeah. I would have gotten more if it had prices like Book Off [like, a LOT more], but it's understandable, and this wasn't bad -- I'm actually incredibly pleased with what I got. For the Vince Flynn books, those [and two others] I haven't been able to find at Book Off, and the two Tolkien I haven't seen before either. So yes, I am very happy. Not much else to talk about. I hope to finish the book I'm currently on today or tomorrow to keep up with the book-a-week thing I've been doing. Oh and if there's any books that I -have- to read, let me know and I'll look into them. - Velox

    Book Review

So I finished Vince Flynn's book Term Limits yesterday, after having started it on Monday. Which is fast for me, as while I'm not a slow reader of actual pages, I do normally take a fair amount of time to read through a book. This, however, was so entertaining that I read over 600 pages in four days, one hundred and two hundred pages a day, depending on the day. Is it bad to neglect homework if you're reading? =P But anyway, back to the subject at hand, that book really was amazing. I just love how he is able to describe things so vividly, but at the same time creates a page-turning read, not allowing the descriptions to slow the pace of the book. Perhaps even more amazing is the author himself. He has dyslexia, and was diagnosed in gradeschool. When he wrote Term Limits, he was initially rejected by over sixty publishers over a course of five years, finally resorting to self-publishing his first novel, which later became a New York Times Bestseller after a publisher saw how well he was selling as a self-publisher. Two other of his novels have become the #1 New York Times Bestseller. And, furthermore, I believe some of his books are being made into movies. Which, really, is just extremely inspiring. I know this sounds crazy, and maybe I'm crazy for thinking this, but it's made me want to finish and publish the book I'm writing rather than post it here. Though, I doubt I'd be good enough to find a publisher to accept it [especially if his Term Limits was rejected by so many], and so would have to self-publish if I really wanted to. Back to the book itself, it's an awesome political thriller, complete with assassins, politicians, FBI, Secret Service, CIA, Navy SEALS, Marines, military commandos, bodyguards, snipers, and more. I just love how he made all of his characters -- some of his characters I loved, and others I absolutely hated, wanting to just be a part of that scene and slap them in the face. =P Which is really good writing, IMO. I really do think this is perhaps my favorite book that I have read [though, it is true that I haven't actually read all that many things -- I plan to, now, though, especially since I can get so many books for just a dollar at Book Off, even hardback (the most for hardback being five dollars)]. There also is a fair amount of language, but I don't think it was used excessively, and nor was it distracting from the story. Enough of my rambling. The tl;dr version: I definitely recommend Vince Flynn's Term Limits. After I finished it I just had to go to Book Off again to try to get more of his books [really, that store is so amazing. There's an isle of $1 fiction paperback, another isle of $1-5 fiction paperbacks, an isle of $1 fiction hardbacks, and a wall of $5 fiction hardbacks, all of which are in really good condition]. Here's everything I got: Protect and Defend -- Vince Flynn. Extreme Measures -- Vince Flynn.Consent to Kill -- Vince Flynn.Timeline -- Michael Crichton. I've heard this guy is really good from many people, so I finally just decided to pick up one of his books to see how it is, and this one sounded kind of interesting. Debt of Honor -- Tom Clancy. Just another Tom Clancy book that sounded cool.Flags of our Fathers -- James Bradley. Heard this was both an awesome movie and book, and having not seen/read either, I wanted to get it.Stormbreaker -- Anthony Horowitz. I can't remember where I've heard this name before, or who said he was a good author, but when I was looking for some Heinlein stuff [which, unfortunately, they didn't seem to have at a quick glance] I saw this and decided to get it.Unfortunately, they only had the three Vince Flynn books above besides the other three I already have [Executive Power, Term Limits, and Act of Treason]. Which, even more unfortunately, are not the ones I wanted right now [of course, I still do want them =P], 'cause I want to read them in order, even though you don't have to. But that's okay, as I want to read stuff from other people first, anyway, so that I can possibly buy more from them as well depending on how much I liked them. Currently reading: Patriot Games, by Tom Clancy. - Velox

    Decisions

Hmm, okay, so. I know I've probably bored you all to death with every thing I write about my murder story here, but once again I'm having trouble deciding something, so I'm posting my thoughts here. Besides, sometimes just writing things out helps me decide something. So anyway, I started out of having the team of investigators be NCIS Feds, but the more I think about it and the more I read other books, I'm not sure if I want to do that any more. Here are the pros and cons of using NCIS or the FBI [which is the other choice I've considered doing]: Pros: NCIS -I "know" more about them through the TV show, but of course that's not necessarily accurate so it's also a con. -There aren't many [if any] NCIS novels. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen any myself. So this could possibly be a pro, but may be a con. FBI -It has more cool things [like helicopters, a SWAT team, a lot more of... everything, basically, more funding, etc.] -I could have it based in Los Angeles, and they could probably still investigate Marines [which is what the first novel is based on] as the nearest NCIS place is in San Diego. I could be wrong, but I just think that the FBI would be able to take over a case. If not, I can always just change the victim to a non-Marine very easily. Cons: NCIS -My only information on them is basically from the TV show. -As there aren't many NCIS novels, this will seem [iMO] like a piece of fanfiction for the TV show. -NCIS is a lot smaller than the FBI, having less "toys" to work with [helicopters, etc.] -The team could only investigate Marines/Navy -It wouldn't be completely accurate if I did what I wanted [i want it set in Los Angeles, but, unless I'm mistaken, there's not a real NCIS in Los Angeles, the closest being Sand Diego] FBI -I possibly "know" less about them, but considering all I know about NCIS is through a TV show and there's much better sources for the FBI, I could probably know more about the FBI than NCIS [making this kinda a pro] -I wouldn't be able to have my main character have as much a connection to the FBI as he would with NCIS as he's a Marine. But that's really just minor and I can definitely see him wanting to work for the FBI instead. -One of the main scenes could -possibly- become less-realistic [i have everything outlined], as with NCIS agents it has them go somewhere before SWAT would get there. However, since the FBI has their own SWAT, that wouldn't be very likely. Then again, I could make some other reason why they go without SWAT, like they don't think there'd be much danger or something. ...And that's about it. So yeah. Your opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks, everyone. [Oh and thanks to everyone that replied to my short story. If you haven't yet, you should! =P] -Velox

    Score!

So I was talking to my friend a couple weeks back about books and writing and such. Then we got in to used books stores and how a bunch were closing and all that [a few within several minutes from my house]. Anyway, he knew of a good one like twenty minutes from where I lived that had really cheap books and a really good selection [and also good quality]. Well, I finally went there today. I got ten books for ~$12: A Cry In the Night -- Mary Higgins Clark. Got this because she spoke at my brother's [college] graduation, and so he wanted me to see if she was good or not [and it is mystery, which is a genre I like, and it was a dollar, so why not].The Hunt For Red October -- Tom Clancy. The movie was awesome, why not the book? Besides, it was only a dollar. =PPatriot Games -- Tom Clancy. I just heard Tom Clancy is good, and this one sounded cool [and have not seen the movie, so that'll help with my possibly biased attitude when I read it =P].Clear and Present Danger -- Tom Clancy. Again, this one just sounded good, and is huge and hardback and still only one buck.Unfinished Tales -- J.R.R. Tolkien. It's by Tolkien. Enough said. Artemis Fowl -- Eoin Colfer. I loved that series, and so when I saw the book, I bought it, as 1) it was only a buck; and 2) I wouldn't mind reading it again, along with the whole series. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd -- Agatha Christie. It's Agatha Christie. I love her works. This is one of them. Enough said [and also because I haven't read it yet, so that's a plus].Five Little Pigs (Murder in Retrospect) -- Agatha Christie. See above.Term Limits -- Vince Flynn. Yes, I know, this is only nine. That's because I bought two of this one, lol. No, I did not mean to -- I wasn't really paying attention and just saw the different covers xD. It's okay, though -- they buy/trade books, too, so I'll just exchange it some time since they have more from him.All are in very good condition. In short, I am very happy. And I have a lot of reading to do, lol [still have three library books, the used books from my blog entry a few entries down, these, and then a few that I already have at home that I haven't read yet]. And first day of school went well I guess. I can already tell all of my classes are gonna be hard [except maybe Latin, which will only be semi-hard]. Ah, well. At least I'll have good books to flee to. =P - Velox
  21. Whenever I write a short story, or get an idea for a short story and start planning it out, I work a lot the first time I work on it, but afterward I never feel like working on it. A few nights ago I was sitting in bed somewhere around midnight not all that tired and decided to write so I pulled out a notebook/pen and wrote out part of a short story and outlined the rest of it. Personally I am quite fond of the idea, and think it's pretty cool. But, as what always seems to be the problem with me, is that I haven't felt like writing much more since then. Then of course there's that murder mystery that hasn't really been worked on in a while either. Ah, well. I just hope I can finish those by the end of the summer. Then of course there's LSO [Library Summer Olympics] which I may or may not write something for, as well as the BS01 contest, which I definitely hope to write something for. I keep getting more and more ideas for that and haven't quite decided which one to go with. The idea is definitely an epic one, though. Other than that, not much going on. Summer league for basketball has started [as well as conditioning], and surprisingly we won our first JV game [it was against one of the hardest schools we will ever play (not even in our normal league, but much higher) that has two JV teams -- they started with their second (yeah, so our reputation for being good isn't all that great =P), but they brought in their second team after we showed that we didn't want to loose. Turns out we won by a couple points]. So yeah that was fun. -Velox
  22. Yes, this is another blog entry about my murder mystery story. =P Anyway... I'm still stuck on what short of team Velox & Co. [in their human forms, obviously] should be on. I really like the idea of being on NCIS, and I kinda think I'd write the best with that, but the only problem is that I'm not sure I should do that. Just because of the whole NCIS TV series and such. I dunno, it's hard to explain, but for some reason it doesn't seem right doing it, but at the same time I really want to. So here's your job: Should V and Co. be NCIS Special Agents, or something else [specify]? I guess my second choice would be just the LAPD [Los Angeles, California], but yeah. I'm not even sure if the police department has teams of people, so yeah. Anyway, thanks. -Velox
  23. Now this doesn't mean I'll do whatever one wins, but I am just curious as to which option you would rather see: A -- A series [or just one story] of Murder Mysteries set in a BIONICLE world with Velox, Jural, Iavo, and others as the investigators -- if anyone knows the characters of Velox, Jural, and Iavo, you will know that they were all on the same team once and were the "police" of their city. Modernized, and more humanized. Or B -- A completely human series [or just one story] of Murder Mysteries involving one of the options I showed in an early blog entry [PI, random police detective, normal police, a team of people, etc., etc.]. Completely unrelated to BIONICLE. Or C -- A series [or just one story] of Murder Mysteries that's completely unrelated to BIONICLE and is completely human, but uses the characters of Velox, Jural, Iavo, etc. [with human names]. Thanks to all who comment.
  24. Any of you remember that murder mystery idea/prologue I posted before? Well, there are several reasons why I have not worked on it any further than I have. One of the reasons is because I'm not sure which idea I like best for the detective. So I will be listing all my ideas, and I'd appreciate if you'd list your choices from one to five [1 being your favorite choice, and 5 being your least-favorite]. -A specific police detective -A private investigator -Just normal police [so the detective would change every time] -A retired police detective that now works as a PI of sorts -A team of people [like a government agency or something -- please state what agency, if any] -Something else? [say what] Thanks for all the replies. -Velox
