BrickFair New England (AKA Massachusetts) happened a few weeks ago, and hoo boy was there much going on! I easily doubled the amount of sets in my "to be built" pile--and didn't pay for any of them! That's the power of playing games and volunteering. I also met a few new people that will be good to see again at BFVA. Plenty of inspiring MOCs and fun ideas. But what really stood out was meeting all the LEGO Group folks that came to visit from Enfield, CT, which is pretty close by. I met a few people from the social media team, chatted with an employee who handles LEGO Brand Retail Stores about what gets me into the store (like promotions), talked with Strategy Director Jack Clarke for about 20 minutes (and even showed him a few Space MOCs), went to panels by folks like Paul Striefler (AFOL liason) and Tim Courney (LEGO Ideas) Sara Moore (LEGO Rebrick), and attended a very special panel by LEGO CEO Bali Padda who just happened to be in the States this week and was able to spare about an hour on his way to the airport for a Q&A and meet and greet. While Danny is still holding my photo with Bali Padda for ransom, I was lucky enough to get his minifig business card: So I'm pretty pleased with my takeaway from BrickFair NE. -CF

This is just an epic where I write about the exploits of my personal LEGO collection. I've been playing with these guys since childhood, and now they get to have their stories told. Chapter 0: Great One Two minifigures made their way through a labyrinthine cave. A trail of glowing crystals could be seen behind them. These would show them the way to the outside world. It had been a lengthy journey, and both parties were left tired and cold. It was necessary, however. Much was at stake, and hope was growing faint. "It shouldn't be much further." said the minifugre in black. He had black hair, a black firefighter's jacket and black pants. He held a flashlight and it shone on the hard rock ahead. "Are you sure?" said a young woman with brown hair held back in a ponytail. She wore a white shirt with a collar and two front pockets and green slacks. Her eyes were black and her lips red. "Sure? No. Megan, no one has seen this being for centuries. There's a chance his existence is entirely fiction! We can't be sure of anything." He spoke matter-of-factly. "That's awfully optimistic of you, Jack." her words seemed to hurt as they escaped her breath. "We both knew this was a long-shot from the start. But if the legends are true, we will soon find out." It was not long when they came across a large chamber through a small opening in the stone before them. Jack shone the light towards the center of the room. There he sat, a great creature of green and red. He had one short arm, and the other long with two great fingers outstretched. His torso was full of holes, and on his right chest area sat a crooked, yellow, chisled head, its eyes closed. "He's real...." Megan whispered in astonishment. It was all she could manage. Jack pulled out a scroll from his pocket and let the flashlight illuminate it. He began to read. "Oh ancient spirit of light and shadow, we call for you to wake, The world outside has fallen low, and lest the heavens shake, We pray your wisdom holds the key to heal our earthly woes, We ask you now to grant us power that we may best our foes." The chamber began to shake with a moan like soft thunder. The creature's right eye glowed white. The floor began to glow, revealing a pool of water that was five feet below the cliff they were standing on. The chamber was now dully illuminated with blue light. "A thousand years... I have slumbered... And now I rise to your call..." The voice was ancient and booming. Megan and Jack stood in awe for a moment. Jack was the one to step forward and speak. "Oh great one, we have come here seeking-" "I know why you are here, Jack... and Megan... I see through the tree of time... I know its branches well... and its roots... You come seeking order... in a world of chaos... Witchcraft... Monsters... Fire... You wish to best them..." "Yes, we do!" Megan shouted eagerly. "What must we do to prove ourselves worthy of such power?" "Ha...ha...ha..." The laugh was wistful. "You have already done so... by finding my den... Megan... step forward." Megan hesitated, but then stepped towards the giant. He held out his long arm and wrapped his two fingers around her. Hoisting her up to his face. His head straightened itself within his torso, and his right eye opened wide. "Daughter of Yin... You shall become a child of Yang. Accept... his power.. But... beware... the light can easily... flare too brightly.. and consume..." Megan stared into his eye. It was as if the entire world around her vanished, the being's grip vanishing from her senses. She could see the stars and galaxies swirling throughout the universe. They grew brighter and brighter still. She felt warm, a warmth that filled her through to her bones. It was as if she was floating through the heavens, ascending to new heights. Her heart beat excitedly and it made her head spin. It felt wonderful and dangerous at the same time, her mind racing. The giant released his grip and Megan floated down slowly to the cliff next to Jack. Her mind was still swimming. "...Jack..." The great creature extended his arm down to the base of the cliff. Jack stared for a moment, but then walked to the edge, letting the great arm carry him up as well. The giant's right eye closed, and this time his left eye opened wide. It was pitch black. "Son of Yang... You shall become a child of Yin. Accept... her patience... But... beware... The peace of darkness... can be very tempting... and quell even the brightest passion...." Jack felt as if the world had faded into nothing. He saw the lights of the universe slowly fade into nothing. He felt cold, as if he had turned to stone. He felt as if he were falling fast to the earth, down into the abyss. His heartbeat had slowed to a faint pulse. It made his head acutely aware of the cold. It felt strangely calming and sad at the same time. The red and green creature set Jack down gently on the cliff, and he staggered; keeping his balacne proved to be difficult. "What... did you do?" Megan asked, still feeling lightheaded. "I have granted the two of you power... You shall both... cancel out the other... Use these gifts wisely... and bring order to your world..." And with that, the giant's eyes slowly closed and a low thunder rumbled through the cavern. The blue glow of the water slowly started to fade. "W-wait!" Jack yelled, stumbling to get to his feet. "We... will... meet.... again...." And with that, the chamber returned to darkness. Review

Displaying LEGO is always tricky, because dust is very annoying. It's something I constantly worry about with my displays on my shelf, because it is so very annoying to remove. It just looks ugly on display. While my plan is to use model car cases for things like the DeLorean and Curiosity Rover, and some big clear cases for minifigs to grandstand on, I would rather have a few figs stand out. I have some cases, but that's still not good enough. Things can be touched easily, and I am always rotating out which minifigs get displayed. So I found these little things that came with Pokemon toys inside them. They're relatively cheap (or cheap enough) and look great. (Brickshelf) The pricey minifigs in the upper pictures deserve a bit of separation from the rest of my collection. The chrome Star Wars figs shouldn't ever be touched with bare fingers, and the two Comic Con figures have a nice sentimental value. (Their high monetary value also garners them some extra respect.) The TRU Force Friday brick could be moved elsewhere more visible, but it's big and bulky and doesn't quite deserve to be unintruded. It's a nice piece of history though. The Avengers in the lower pictures were a gift for a friend. She had a few of the "main six" from the movies, but needed a few more characters to complete her collection. I put them in the display case on some bases adhered with sticky tack, allowing for the mirrors to really show them off. I have one more case which needs filled. I can fit 5 figures without overshadowing anyone, so it's just a matter of who. Something special, something cool, and something I won't want to take out to use in a vignette. I've got a lot of figs to choose from, so I'll make it count. -CF

I currently have 7 Hot Dog Guy minifigs. Granted, six of them are sealed in the bag and in my BrickLink store, but still. Just imagine a whole lineup of Hot Dog guys in some sort of MOC. Craaaaaaziness. I also have 4 unicorns, all sealed. Oops, or yay? -CF

You know what's great about having a friend who is extremely adept at making trades and scouring ebay for deals? He knows just how to grab something rad online. A few days later and bam!--Toa Lhikan Hordika puts in my hands the Collector, one of San Diego Comic Con's exclusive LEGO minifigs last year! (A trade, of course.) He looks good with the team, and by team I'm including the proper Nova, of course. And Drax has his signature energy axe. (A second thanks goes to xccj for grabbing me Rocket in his Ravagers outfit.) What is really cool about the Collector is the backing of the case unfolds to show a large image of him, scowling (the other side of his minifig head). Not that any sane LEGO collector would display this unless there was a safe way to do so, but it's a pretty neat bonus. But the exclusives don't stop there! I also have another benefactor: my manager who used to work at GameStop and snagged all kinds of extras for the LEGO video games. So now I have the exclusive Elrond figure and, better yet, Lex Luthor in power armor and, better yet, Plastic Man! Certainly exciting additions to my collection. What's next? Making a display case for all of these (and my other exclusives)! -CF

You know when you're working on something cool hoping it never gets usurped by official things? Well, I just want to go on record as having made Green Arrow, Cyborg, Supergirl, Captain Cold, and Hawkman minifigs. Because. Hehe. Seriously though, I'm becoming obsessed with making my own figs from DC and Marvel comics, and have a list of 20 more I want to make. Good guys, bad guys, known or obscure. And as soon as I figure out water-slide decals, they'll look even cooler. -CF

Chima has some great humanoid, anthropomorphic animal characters, and the sets are really cool too. But we all know LEGO could do more. We've seen snakes in Ninjago. Atlantis had some great aquatic life minifigs. The Collectible Minifig Series has had their fair share of animal figs. So let's see the exploration and go deeper into the jungle: Not only can we dive deep with some stingrays (and sharks, which I don't have), but buzzing around with bugs makes sense too. Mosquitoes and other creepy-crawlies found in the jungle. But let's not stop at things like snakes and lizard-men. Embrace mythology and throw in the legendary Lost Griffon Tribe (and maybe search the maze for the Minotaur, but watch out for the Medusa (or rather, don't watch out)). And of course, let's have some samurai pandas. Time to make some Chima MOCs? -CF

When it's time to call in the heroes, you assemble a few extras from your collection to amass a grand team. What does that include? Cyborg, Supergirl, Aquaman, the Superior Spider-Man*, Agent Venom, Namor, Maria Hill, Wasp, Ant-Man, and Rogue! And a little revisioning to War Machine? Finally, a WIP of Hawkman: The mace is from Brick Forge. They're awesome. Coming soon: Green Arrow, Iceman (actually just Electro. Maybe I'll find some white hair.), and some new Doctor Who minifigs. I've got the official Flash fig (and Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter), but if only I could get some sort of Green Lantern fig... -CF *Still a WIP

100% of you will probably know of at least one of these franchises. Bonus cookies if you're fond of both. First, some more Avengers figs: -Namor (doubtful he's still an Avenger), Maria Hill (technically not an Avenger, but she's in the Secret Avengers title), Rogue (an Uncanny Avengers--protip: Don't read anything by Rick Remender) -Ant-Man and Wasp (she'll be updated with wings once I get the pieces) Now, who's had the pleasure of playing Munchkin? If not, well hopefully I'll remember to bring it to BrickFair, and we'll all have a blast! I wish I could fit the lady munchkin with something on her back too, but the armor gets in the way. I tried stretching a scabbard over it, but ehhhhh... I'm sure other pieces will come to my attention. I think I'll put these two on my brickbadge. -CF

I finally got around to digging for the pieces to build one of Marvel's favorite couples (until they weren't). I present, the Avengers ANT-MAN and WASP! I could do Wasp as black/yellow/black, but the brighter colors make her stand out more. My friend has suggested a clip and some head-dress feathers as wings. I'll have to look for a vendor selling some at BrickFair. These will go great with my other LEGO Avengers, both official sets and custom (but purist) minifigs. -CF

I've made it a point to get 2 of every helmet seen in the second wave of Space Police III (grey), the white and pink spacemen, the black cyborg, and Alien Conquest (weird light blue) (is that all?) in recent minifig history. So if i want even just one of all the pretty Galaxy Squad helmets, looks like I'll have to get each set. Which sounds like an awesome idea! -CF

Finally got some Series 8 minifigs today at TRU! How many? You guessed it, 8! But half of those I'm giving away, so I actually got 4: Two Alien queens, a businessman, and the diver. The aliens are pretty awesome. I am pleasantly surprised at getting two pieces of fabric for the cape, and how the head/brain is two pieces with a minifig head inside. I'm experimenting to see what I can place the brain on that will look good. I also like getting 2 of every space figure. The businessman is pretty much just for the black bowler hat so I can make an Inspector Spacetime minifig, but I'm having trouble finding the proper jacket. The new Monster Hunter Zombie chauffeur has a pretty good one, but it's ripped and whatnot. The diver was just because it's awesome and different; another great idea from LEGO! I also snagged the cowgirl for my sister, the thespian for my friend, the evil robot for my girlfriend, and the pirate for my brother (which my mom is putting into a Talk Like a Pirate Day care package to send to his dorm which will arrive by the 19th). I had no trouble finding any of these (or at least I assume--I haven't opened the three except for the fact that my sister opened her cowgirl). Overall a nice pull this time around. -CF

I'm a huge fan of the Avengers, and thanks to a bit of luck have come across ALMOST a full set of Minifigs from the Marvel Super Heroes line. The only two I'm missing are The Hulk and Black Widow:I normally would just buy the sets, but the ones they come in are $60 and $80 respectively, so that's not an option currently. I'm curious if anybody has these two available for sale, and what sort of price I'd be looking at.Thanks!UPDATE: I have tracked down The Hulk. Now I just need to find somebody with a spare Widow.
