BZP Mafia Discussion

All this mafia stuff sounds really fun! I feel, though, that some of the newer guys are left behind more as they can pretty much only join simpler little games such as Steal the Mask or The last letter game. They aren't familiar with G&T yet and will typically stay away from mafia games since it seems only the regulars can join the game. Another thing is that I can tell from experience is that sometimes a mafia game is created during, say, a school night or weekend, and some of the new guys won't know about it until all of the places have been taken. I wanted to join XVIII, but when I got to BZPower again, in like the next day, all of the slots were filled up. I suggest a little side mafia game only for the newer guys and teach them pretty much the basics, then afterwards let them go. Or just give them a heads up about the new mafia game.

Now you can say that this is redundant or something, whatever, I'm just putting the thoughts of a new-ish guy out there.

I don't know what you mean with the first one.

The second applies to regulars as well. I've missed a few games due to being too bogged down with school work to sign up on time. :P

Well, I have seen conflicts of past games where someone would say a number and then someone else would get mad as that person has take their number.

That is entirely different

When players like Blade are always 13 or Ehks are always 15 or I am always 19... it can be frustrating to have someone else claim that spot (multiplied by ten if they did it on purpose, because then they're a horrible person instead of ignorant).

E: And as Ehks pointed out, that's not an issue as far as signing up goes; we do suck it up for that game

(and bloodthirsty threats of vengeance are only 40% serious)

When it's on purpose, that's just...well, BZP filter prevents me from saying what it is but I suspect you get the idea.

It's not cool to do that, but if someone doesn't know that's completely different.

Well, if you, Rider, or anyone else is interested, I could host a quick, basic game designed to be an introduction to Mafia. I'm thinking just 12 slots, just the basic Mafia x3, Doctor, and Detective could be a nice and simple thing to do.

And due to said time things and regulars, this being an 'introductory game', I would also aim for some clause such as 'Anyone who has participated in a Mafia game in the last 3 months must wait 2-3 days to sign up for this game, in order to let newer players try out the game.'

So, basically, how about this:

If we get 3 new people, including you, Rider, that would all like a little game like this to go on, just alongside the other games as an intro to the gametype, then I don't think there'd be a problem with making that happen. ^_^

I would prefer that you wait to run this game until after XIX.

I don't need orientation, I would like to just help others get into the swing of things with the mafia stuff and all. I would like to help out in orientating some of the newer guys in your said game however Zakaro and I'll look for some people who would be interested in joining. However, I would like to point out your wait a few days thing. It seems like a good idea. Say for the side mafia games it could have a little 'wait for new guys to sign up then you can sign up the next day or so' thing. I think that would be a little generous in coaxing newbies into joining the mafia games.

New players are always welcome in morfior. =)

Cause then I can avoid killing them until I inevitably do kill them.

As well, if somebody expresses interest in joining but misses it I try to inform them when the next game is open, plus I try to always help them out outside the game.

In one of them I was Mafian and the Detective was asking me for help. That was a really interesting situation. Unfortunately that was one of the games we lost in the short setback. Toa K's game, I believe.

Man that game's mafia was so stacked and perfect and beautiful and then we lost everything

Holy heck, that is a stacked Mafia.

I must say, I really enjoy games like that. Of course, for fairness, role distribution by RNG is best. But it's really fun to have a challenge like that, overcoming a group that you know is made up of the best players Mafia has to offer. (I don't think I've ever been with a crew like that, or if I'd even count as one of the heavy hitters, but it's even more fun to be on the inside of things.)

I found it to be rather confusing at first too, and some members' strategic thinking still baffles me to this day, but intimidating?

Though yeah, maybe bringing back T&E, but aiming preferably at new members would work out better, since the whole host-training did not really work out as intended...?

2:08 AM. There really was no chance of me getting a place, even if the game didn't fill both it's normal places and it's extra places in an hour and a half.

Bionicle Mafia XVIII: By the Numbers 2

Post-Game Writeiup

So. This game, then. One of the strongest Mafia groups I've seen as both a host and a player; and as with all great Mafia groups, the Village, by contrast, was an embarrassment. I do not think that can be denied by anyone. While I did originally think that the Mafia was done for when they lost two members in the first round, they managed to rapidly turn themselves around, cleverly working themselves back into a position where they could win the game. Honestly, this game is my favorite out of the ones that I've hosted. It's... well, this game and Bionicle Mafia XIX were experiments of mine in so many different ways (although more subtle than usual). While this game did use almost the exact same role setup (and it did use the exact same twist) as Bionicle Mafia III, there are a multitude of things that made me enjoy hosting this game so much. The first was that the players were such good sports, even when their side was being obliterated or they received the wrong role entirely (Valendale being Pyro? Hey RNG, let's talk).

The second was the story - oh man, the story. I don't know how much the players liked the story, but this is probably my favorite game storyline yet (that I've hosted). I knew that I didn't want this game to just be a sequel in that it used the same mechanics; I wanted it to be a sequel as far as the story went, too. But how do you write a sequel to something where everyone died? I decided to have it take place in some sort of strange "otherworld", which eventually was revealed to be non-existence. But of course, I wanted it to be a bit more intriguing; rather than just have the mystery of who had each number, and who the Dark Hunters were, I went a bit further. I kept the full details of the location itself a secret; as well as why the characters were there. I tied it into the Darkest Days trilogy as a sort of half-sequel, which of course allowed for even more mystery. Of course, that wasn't all; while Bionicle Mafia III was a comedy, I decided to take Bionicle Mafia XVIII in a very different direction. I wanted the game to be far darker, far more grim than other games; I think that I succeeded. Writing the scenes for this game was a lot of fun, and I'm very happy with where it went.

The third was an experiment I did with generating hype for the game (something that I continued to do with Bionicle Mafia XIX, so I'll discuss it after that ends as well). The first part was a simple question: how would people feel about a sequel? When the response was positive all-around, I set to work. Outside of casually mentioning a possible sequel once more (during my write-up of every other game I've hosted, actually), I remained silent as I decided how the game would go. Then, as Bionicle Mafia XVII began to come to a close, I started making my move. First was announcing that I had completed preparations; then virtual radio silence again, until I reminded everyone of what they had missed the first time around. I used Bionicle Mafia III to my advantage; while I included 4 notes (numbers 1, 3, 4, and 5) in that game, I never included Note #2. Note #2 would eventually show up in the introduction for this game. And then - the release. A simple post containing only the game's banner in the BZP Discussion Topic, as well as a very similar blog post. I hyped it about as much as I could; because it was a sequel to a game with such specific features, everyone already knew what to expect with regards to how the game would function. But nonetheless, it was an interesting experiment... and of course, as far as Bionicle Mafia XIX goes, I have much to say on this subject.

Rating: 9.5/10 - I don't believe that I can host any better than I did during this game. I would have this set as 10/10, but I'm waiting until Bionicle Mafia XIX ends, since that may well surpass this.

Anyway, that's my post-game write-up. What were your thoughts on Bionicle Mafia XVIII: By the Numbers 2?

I was a big fan of the wait I was dead the whole time and had no involvement

But yeah the story was fantastic enough to maintain most of my interest even though I was dead, and you did a fine job hosting as per usual

Twus a great ride, even with Xaeraz killing me in like the first or second round XD

I do see how By the Numbers 2 was quite gritty, and almost similar in tone to the Mafia Epics while not going as deep into a character due to the rather satisfying death rates. :P

Just because it's popped into my head and the series of darker games we've had for the last few months, would anyone be interested in a Bionicle Mafia ###: Comedic Relief ? :P

I enjoyed XVIII

I also like the part where we won and where the village was formally declared 'Worst Village of All Time'. But that makes our win dubious, so, uh... the village needs to be worthy. Back then and probably still now they are mere cannon fodder. We killed people by choosing their numbers mostly at random. That made it hilarious when Ehks said killing him was the worst thing we could have done. We went on to win anyway. At first we were worried when two of us died first round, including me, but we went on to recover.

It also really puts some of the currently dead-sidegames into perspective: it started after them and finished before them.

The scenes were beautifully written, and I really enjoyed xviii a lot. :)

Edit: okay, I should elaborate on that. I loved the setting, as well as the story-based narrative. It created its own atmosphere with its own flair of darkness and mystery, but also random specs of colour. (The colour-coding of the Dark Hunters. I liked that) The scenes were always a thrilling read.
