Official Rare & Promotional Collectibles Topic

Welcome to the Official Rare and Promotional Collectibles Topic! This topic serves as a reference guide for the current value of all rare Bionicle collectibles produced by LEGO. There was a topic on the old forum that served the same purpose, but it had not been updated in several years and was thus out of date; with the deletion of the forum archives, it is no longer even available except on the WayBack Machine. So, with the approval of Tufi Piyufi, I've decided to create a new topic to catalogue every rare Bionicle collectible produced by LEGO, as well as a few sets, Hero Factory and Throwbots parts and relevant unofficial items.

The purpose of this topic is three-fold. First, it will hopefully protect buyers from purchasing items at unfair prices; if you see an item priced for much higher than listed in this guide, think twice before buying. That being said, the values here should not be taken as absolute or nonnegotiable, but rather as guidelines. Second, it should help sellers price their items reasonably and competitively. Third, it will serve as a database of information on rare pieces, regardless of price or value, which since the deletion of the old forums and until now did not exist.

There are seven categories - Common, Hard to Find, Rare, Ultra Rare, Bionicle 2015, Flintsmith Customs and Binkmeister Prototypes. The first four are distinguished by value range and, more importantly, frequency of sales. Items in the Common category are always available to purchase somewhere. Items in Hard to Find are usually available in one or more marketplaces, but not necessarily at all times. Rare items show up for sale more or less once per year, and Ultra Rare items are sold much less than once per year.

Within each category, each entry includes information on the piece, an image of the piece, a price estimate, and a price reference if available. Images are linked to via each heading or subheading. Links to references are to the right of the price. With regard to prices, I do not make any of them up; price estimates are based on sales of the item on BZP, Bricklink, and occasionally eBay. However, sales of rare pieces on eBay tend to be significantly higher than on BZP or BrickLink, so eBay is not always a reliable indicator of value. Note that the prices for exceedingly rare pieces are usually only rough approximations, as many of these pieces are seldom if ever sold. As a general rule, the rarer the item, the more uncertain and variable its value. Some prices are downright impossible to estimate and so are noted with a “$??”. Also, any pieces that are usually valued at around a dollar or less are noted with a “<$1”. All prices are only applicable to items that are in like-new condition or, in a few cases, still sealed. Damaged or unsealed items will always sell for less.

All prices are in USD/CAD (not much difference between the two). A good currency converter can be found here.

Some additional terminology (note, some of the details below are conjecture):

Misprint: A piece that is the wrong colour for one of a couple of possible reasons. Not enough dye could have been injected into the plastic, or the wrong colour was selected at the factory. Examples include the 14 European misprints (possibly the second reason) and the marbled red/clear Hau Nuva (probably the first reason).

Mismould: A piece that has a physical deformity due to a production error of some kind. Possible reasons include not enough plastic injected into the mould (also known as a short shot), air bubbles, defective plastic or a defective mould. Examples include the five-hole Kraahkan and various short shot Kanohi.

Prototype: Also known as preproduction pieces. These are made as tests for new moulds or as parts of prototype sets. Sometimes they are made in plain colours such as white or silver, such as the silver Great Huna. Other times, they are plain versions of pieces that are printed in production sets, like the various plain Kanoka. They can also be made in the colours corresponding to the sets they were intended to be used in, but then the set designs changed; examples of this type include the Metru blue Matatu and Metru red Huna.

Promotional: Usually, a piece made as part of an advertising campaign or special event, and often distributed via third parties. Example include the orange Vahi, distributed by ACD Distribution, and the NYCC 2015 clear Hau.

Rare: This word has a somewhat muddy definition. "Rare" is differentiated from "promotional" by virtue of having very limited or unintentional availability, which most promotional pieces do not. All misprints, mismoulds, and prototypes are considered "rare", as well as any pieces that were not mass-produced (i.e. WMKK, SSKK, VMKK, GPKK). However, "rare" does not automatically mean more valuable than "promotional"; for instance, each of the 14 European misprints ("rare") are far less valuable than the 2015 translucent blue Kaukau ("promotional"). "Rare" can also refer to any pieces that are considered more special than ordinary pieces, meaning all the pieces on this list.

Most of the photos linked to were compiled or taken by mfuss903, Sidorak, Toa Lhikan Hordika, Flintsmith, and Black Six; thanks to them and to everyone else whose photos were used. Thanks to Mask Collector for contributing several of the price estimates below, in particular for the rarer pieces, and to everyone else who has contributed information.

So, without further ado -

------------------------------------------------------------

Common

Although still less common than ordinary collectibles, pieces in this category can always be found for sale. They usually sell for up to around $50.

Translucent neon green Miru (TNGM) - $15 (reference)

This mask was a LEGOLAND California and LEGOLAND Windsor exclusive in 2001.

Copper Huna (US) - $5-10 (reference)

The copper Huna was produced in two versions, one in the US and one in the UK. The US version is very common, and is differentiated from the UK version by holding each mask in front of a light; the US version appears translucent, whereas the UK version does not let any light through and remains opaque. Released in 2002, it was available through a Toys'R'Us promotion and at Blockbuster locations.

Orange Vahi - $20 (reference)

The Vahi was supposedly the first mask ever designed by LEGO. It was distributed by ACD Distribution in 2002 as a promotional item, and was available in the 2003 Bionicle Van Tour .

Chrome Hau - $30 (reference)

This mask was sold with the Power Pack in 2001. Because of the fragility of the chrome plating, most of these masks are scratched and pristine ones can be hard to find.

Light/dark purple Krana - $1

Two slightly different shades of Krana were produced in 2002. I have heard two stories about how these were distributed: (1) dark purple Krana were in Gahlok Va sets and Krana/Kanohi packs (sets 8550-1, 8559-1, 8559-2, and 8569-1), and the light purple variation came in Kanohi Nuva/Krana-Kal boxes and polybags (sets 8597-1 and 8598-1); and (2) dark purple came in Gahlok Va sets, light purple came in Kanohi/Krana packs.

There is no difference in value between the two, but specific Krana in either shade are difficult to track down because they aren't easily distinguishable at a glance from each other and databases like BrickLink do not differentiate between them. The colour difference is more obvious when compared under a black light, as in the picture above.

Chronicler’s Staff - <$1

This piece came with Bionicle: The Game in 2003 in the UK and Ireland. It has since been included in multiple sets over the years and is no more valuable than any other similar part, but is included here for the sake of completion. It used to be used as a prize in BBC contests on BZP.

Infected Hau Nuva - $15 (references: RF, GF, GS)

These came in four styles, called red foreheadgreen forehead,  double green forehead, and green stripe  Each is valued at around the same. They were found in several promotions in 2003: comic #1 and a Toa Nuva Poster available at seven US LEGO stores; comic #1 of the German Bionicle Magazine; a Woolworth's exclusive set that included a Turaga Vakama polybag rerelease and comic #13; a Scholastic set of all four Bionicle Chronicles novels by Hapka/Farshtey; and at LEGOLAND. The BrickLink catalogue does not distinguish between the green and double green forehead variations, but they do have different part numbers that can be found on the inside of the mask so they are distinct designs.

Shadow Kraata - $5 (references: stage 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

These Kraata were dark purple, and were packaged inside limited edition Rahkshi sets. Sets that contained a Shadow Kraata were marked with a sticker, so unlike the WMKK and SSKK in the Bohrok-Kal sets could be easily identified. They are easily found on Bricklink, and regularly show up on BZP. In the storyline, these were meant to be the seventh and final stage of Kraata evolution, although they were made in all six Kraata stages.

Gold Vahi - $40-50 (reference)

In 2004, this mask was rereleased in dark gold. It came packaged in limited edition Vahki sets along with the Disk of Time. Two Vahi and two disks were also packaged in a limited edition 404-piece tub. It was also available through a Target promotion. The gold Vahi is less common than the orange version, but still not difficult to find.

Disk of Time - $5 (reference)

Available with the gold Vahi, as described above, and in Denmark with comic #7 and #8.

Ultimate Dume Kraahkan - $10 (reference)

Included with the Ultimate Dume combiner set in 2004. These are readily available on Bricklink.

Hard to Find

These pieces are often seen on the market, but may not always be available. Their values extend up to around the $200 mark, sometimes higher.

Copper Huna (UK) (on right) - $10-40

As explained above, this mask was released in the US and the UK and Europe in slightly different variations They are differentiated by holding each mask up to a light source; the US version becomes translucent whereas the UK version remains opaque. This mask was available at LEGOLAND Billund and LEGOLAND Windsor alongside the copper Komau, as well as through a Nestlé promotion in Germany and possibly other countries. It is much harder to come by than the US version. Bricklink does not make a distinction between the US and UK versions of the copper Huna, but sellers sometimes specify which one they have in the listing description or will check if asked.

Copper Komau - $50-100 (reference)

This mask was available at LEGOLAND Billund and Windsor alongside the copper Huna. It is quite difficult to come by and is generally valued above the UK copper Huna since the Komau's availability was more limited.

Copper mask pack - $200 (reference)

The promotional pack available at LEGOLAND Windsor and Billund that contained the copper Huna and Komau, as well as an info card. Sealed packs are quite difficult to find and fetch fairly high prices. Note that most of the ones sold recently on BrickLink are listed under Used, meaning that they were not sealed, so the noted value is based on current sealed listings.

Ruru, Matatu, and Kaukau misprints

These Kanohi were produced in 2001 and found in mask packs. The Ruru and Matatu were produced in all six classic colours - red, white, blue, brown, green, and black. The Kaukau was produced in translucent yellow and translucent light blue. The black Ruru was later mass-produced and sold first with the Power Pack in 2001 and then the Matoran Hafu set in 2003; thus its value is now the same as any other mask. I've included it nonetheless because it was originally part of the set. The red Ruru was also sold in many units of this clock in 2002 (some had a light grey Ruru instead), but it wasn't a common set so the mask is comparable to the others in value.

These were almost certainly not misprints, given how many of them were made and the fact that 13 of them were actually pictured in this promotional display (brown Matatu is missing), but they are commonly referred to as such. It seems more likely that they were intended to be distributed in the mask packs but were replaced early in the production process with the lighter Turaga colours for the Ruru and Matatu and clear and translucent orange for the Kaukau.

Translucent yellow and translucent light blue Kaukau - $200+ (references: TYTLB)

All colours of Matatu - $50-100 (references: RWBlBrGBk)

All colours of Ruru except black - $30-60 (references: RWBlBrG)

Black Ruru - $2 (reference)

Protodermic Kanohi Nuva

These silver Kanohi Nuva were randomly packaged in mask packs in 2003. They served the storyline purpose of being the masks the Toa Nuva wore when they were drained of their elemental powers. They are sold occasionally on BZP, and there are usually several on BrickLink for extremely variable prices.

The value of these has increased drastically over the last few years. With the exception of the Miru Nuva, all of these masks are worth around the same amount. The prices on BricLlink for the Miru are comparable to those for an ordinary mask and people are selling them in bulk (dozens and even hundreds quantities). I have heard two stories about why this is: (1) they were simply much more common in the Nuva/Kal packs than the other five, and (2) they came in a bulk parts set of some kind (although BrickLink does not list the silver Miru in any set inventories). It's also possible they were distributed in ways similar to some items in the Common category, namely at Legoland or retail store events.

All masks except Miru Nuva - $50-150 (references: Ha, Ak, Kk, Ka, Pa)

Miru Nuva - $5 (reference)

Movie Edition Kraahkan - $50-100 (reference)

This mask came with the Takutanuva combiner set in 2003. It was structurally similar to the regular Kraahkan, but had a different face. They are not terribly difficult to find, but are somewhat valuable.

Green Nuva weapons - $30 per piece

These are green versions of the weapons that came with the Toa Nuva sets in 2002. Their origin isn't known, but it's likely that they were late-stage test pieces during the prototyping for the Toa Nuva. They show up periodically on BrickLink for relatively low prices, compared with other pieces in this category. Five of the Nuva weapons are known to have been produced in green, along with the Nuva chest armour piece (not pictured); Onua's Quake Breakers are the only ones which have not turned up to my knowledge.

Tanoka - $50-100

This tan-coloured disk was actually a prototype for the Throwbots, rather than Bionicle. It was given out at LEGOLAND Billund in 2005.

Plain glow-in-the-dark Kanoka - $10-50

Most likely a prototype for the Kanoka disks.

Dark bluish-grey (bley) Rhotuka - $50 (comparison, bley on left) (reference)

This spinner was packaged in early releases of the Rahaga Bomonga set in 2005. Later copies included a generic silver Rhotuka.

Pearl gold Kraahkan (four hole) - $300+ (reference)

A lighter variation of the dark gold four-hole Kraahkan found in later runs of the 2005 Tower of Toa playset. Dark gold was phased out and replaced with pearl gold during this year. Although they appear regularly on BrickLink and eBay (around one per month), they can sell for high prices as this piece is considered highly desirable.

Pearl light gold Vohtarak shell - $100 (reference)

A lighter variation of the dark gold Vohtarak shell found in later runs of the 2005 Battle of Metru Nui playset. Dark gold was phased out and replaced with pearl gold during this year. This piece seems to be rarer than the pearl gold Kraahkan, but tends to sell for much less. Only one sold on BrickLink in 2021.

Pearl gold Ignika - $100-200 (reference)

This mask was included in the Toa Mata Nui set in 2009. While not technically a rare or promotional item, they are quite highly sought after and can sell for relatively high prices. There are usually a few on BrickLink in the noted price range.

Hero Factory Recon chest piece - $50 (reference)

This piece came with the Hero Factory Recon sets in 2011. The sets were designed using an online creator program, and each set came with the exclusive chest piece. It was never included in any other releases and is difficult to find.

Rare

Pieces that are considered rare are sold around once per year, give or take. Their values are more variable than other pieces, reaching as high as a few hundred.

White Metal Krana-Kal (WMKK) - $200+

5000 of these metal Krana were produced and randomly packaged with the Bohrok-Kal in 2003. They were accompanied by an info card and presented in a black velvet bag. This price is applicable if the item has all components and if the card is in mint condition, which many are not after almost twenty years. WMKK were only produced in Krana Xa form.

Vacuum Metal Krana-Kal (VMKK) - $200+

These were initially intended to be packaged with the Bohrok-Kal sets in 2003, but were replaced with the WMKK and SSKK, possibly due to not being ready. They were given out to Proto Squad members and in the 2003 Bionicle Van Tour. They are difficult to find, but show up for sale on BZP every once in a while. VMKK were produced in all eight Krana variations.

Grey Plastic Krana-Kal (GPKK) - $300+ (VMKK top, GPKK bottom)

These were prototypes for the VMKK, WMKK, and SSKK, and were given to Proto Squad members. They are significantly harder to find than VMKK and are thus valued higher. GPKK were produced in all eight Krana variations.

Five-hole Kraahkan - $100 (another one) (back)

A mismould of the Kraahkan with five holes on the chin instead of six. Found in some 2003 Makuta sets. Can sometimes be found on BrickLink by sorting four-hole or six-hold Kraahkan listings by highest price and reading the descriptions.

Translucent orange Kraata (TOK) - $100-200 (reference)

These came attached to a pair of Rahkshi-themed Nike sneakers in 2003. They are quite difficult to come by. Unlike the Shadow Kraata, they had no storyline significance and only came in Stage 1.

Woolworth's Exclusive - $160 (contents) (reference)

This was an exclusive set sold at Woolworth's in 2003 to promote the Mask of Light film. It included a copy of comic #13, one of the four variations of the Infected Hau Nuva, and a redesigned Vakama polybag. It is quite hard to find; an open copy sold on BrickLink in January 2022 for USD $160, but a sealed copy would be more valuable.

175 Kanoka - $25 (reference)

A Ta-Metru disk that had the number 175. It came with some Danish Bionicle comics and was not available in Kanoka packs. Rather difficult to find. Its value is usually closer to $100 but recent sales have been lower.

Translucent red Kanoka (TRK) - $100+ (sealed with comic)

This disk came in a promotional polybag in 2004 packaged with the French version of Comic #1. It came with a black Kanoka launcher. They are fairly difficult to find. The noted price is for the disk only; a sealed copy could be worth quite a bit more.

Black Kanoka - $50-100

This Kanoka was available at LEGOLAND Billund along with the Tanoka but is somewhat rarer. It is plain black with no design. Like the Tanoka, it was probably a prototype for the Throwbots, but might have been a prototype for the Tohunga sets.

SDCC Toa Vakama - $??

A version of the Toa Vakama set that had the San Diego Comic Con disk pictured on the canister but due to a production error did not actually include the disk. They came with an apology letter because the recipient would not be receiving the disk. These are difficult to find; a sealed set in particular would be quite desirable.

Ultra Rare

Pieces in this category are very seldom seen for sale. They include the most elusive misprints, prototypes, exclusives, and one-of-a-kinds. Their prices fluctuate greatly, starting as low as $100 and increasing almost without limit, depending on the seller and buyer. Since this category includes many one-of-a-kind pieces, it actually has more entries that any other category.

Since the prices of these items fluctuate so much, it is not reasonable to put definite values onto many of them. Most of the items listed below are given a range of prices that would be considered reasonable, or that include the lowest and highest prices the piece has sold for. Some that have rarely been sold but would definitely sell for a few hundred dollars are denoted by a "$X00" or "$X000," where the X is a variable. Other items that cannot reasonably have any value associated with them because they haven't been sold even once simply have a "$??".

White Huna - $X00

Most likely a prototype from 2001, this mask was apparently included in a LEGO variety pack in Europe, possibly the Netherlands. A handful of these are known to exist, and more occasionally show up in used Lego sales in Europe. These are owned by ccso35, Toa Lhikan Hordika and Mask Collector.

Brown Komau - $X00

Same story as the white Huna above. How these were distributed is unclear, but at least one was acquired at Lego headquarters in Billund. Very few of these exist; known owners include ccso35, Toa Lhikan Hordika, Mask Collector, and Letagi.

Yellow Huna - $X00 (frontback)

This mask was probably a prototype. A handful are known to exist. One of them is (was?) owned by BZP member KayTee. Ten more were later acquired from a former Lego employee (and sold) in 2019 by member BPG. It was never confirmed that they were genuine, but shadowonua bought one and found that it was an identical match to a prototype orange Huna so it does seem likely that they are real.

Prototype Toa Mata Kanohi - $100+

Prototypes exist for all six of the masks that the original Toa Mata wore, in the proper colours but characterized by smaller details such as numbers and codes found on the exterior of the mask. They also feature the early stud design. These are owned by Craig B, fifi2004, Mask Collector, XONAR, and others. In the pictures below, the prototype is always on the left compared with the corresponding production mask on the right, except for the Miru, which is opposite.

These have sold for a wide range of prices, from a few hundred at the top end to being given away with bulk purchases by fifi2004 at the low end.

Red Hau

White Akaku

Translucent blue Kaukau

Brown Kakama

Green Miru

Black Pakari

Other prototype 2001 Kanohi - $??

Prototypes for several Kanohi in a variety of colours have been found over the years. Some of these pieces have characteristics typical of prototypes, including codes in raised print on the outside of the mask, a different stud design with a larger depression in the middle, and different sprue marks from the manufacturing process. Other appear to be identical to the final production versions but in different colours.

Translucent blue Ruru: This was a prototype for the Nui-Rama set in 2001. Two can also be seen in a picture of the prototype Manas set. Several of these have been found by various collectors.

Translucent blue RauTwo of these masks are seen in a picture of the prototype Manas set from 2001. It's not known if they ever made it into the hands of any fans or whether they still exist at all, as many prototypes are destroyed.

Infected Hau: A hand-painted prototype for the Hau that came with the Muaka & Kane-ra set. Owned by Mask Collector.

Yellow Ruru: Possibly the mask that goes with the Sand Tarakava prototype set. Mike Edwards from Mask of Destiny owned two of these and sold one. Another one, this time without the external code, was found by Twitter user OwlKid.

Green Ruru: A prototype for the 2001 Ruru in green with external codes. Possibly one-of-a-kind.

White Hau: A prototype for the 2001 Hau in white. Possibly one-of-a-kind.

Violet Huna: Found in 2023 by Twitter user OwlKid.

Teal Matatu: Found in 2023 by Twitter user OwlKid.

Sand green Rau: Found in 2023 by Twitter user OwlKid.

Dark orange Mahiki: Found in 2023 by Twitter user OwlKid.

Prototype "Sand" Tarakava (sidetop) - ??

Often thought to have been an unreleased set, this was most likely a prototype for the normal Tarakava set. The Sand Tarakava concept was probably introduced later, after fans became aware of the prototype design. At least one exists; it was and presumably still is owned by PurpleDave from Mask of Destiny. There are various rumours regarding how many were made - so far I've heard one, five, and six - but none of these are confirmed. Fans have also made replicas over the years; if you find one for sale, assume it is a replica and not the original.

Prototype 2001 sets

Some original prototype sets have made their way into collections. Several of the items listed below are owned by Mask Collector, fifi2004, Pereki, and XONAR. The noted values for all these sets are very rough estimates; fifi2004 listed his Pohatu prototype without the mask for $1500 several years ago, but I don't think it ever sold.

The Toa Mata and Turaga prototypes came with the corresponding Kanohi prototypes, but the Tohunga prototypes did not.

Toa Mata - $1000

Turaga - $300

Tohunga - $100

Rahi - $??

Muaka & Kane-Ra and Nui-Rama prototypes are owned by Mask Collector. Baraklava also owns a prototype pair of red and yellow Nui-Rama, which can be seen here.

Solid Gold Hau - $X000 (frontback)

This is one of the most valuable pieces on this list. Only 30 were made, and they were handed out to employees at LEGO. A few were also available through various contests. One went to former BZP admin Binkmeister, winner of the website contest in 2001 and former web developer at LEGO. Some have made their way into the hands of collectors, such as Mask Collector. This mask was produced in solid 14 carat gold, was presented in a velvet case, and had a chain running through two holes near the top of the mask so it could be worn as a necklace.

Sterling Silver Krana-Kal (SSKK) - $1000+

Only 100 of these Krana were made; 72 were randomly packaged with the Bohrok-Kal sets in 2003, and the rest were given to LEGO employees. They were presented in a similar manner to the WMKK, with a black velvet bag and info card, and likewise only came in Xa form. These are extremely rare and are almost never found for sale. Owners include Toa Lhikan Hordika, Munty, and Mask Collector.

Marbled red & clear Hau Nuva - $?? (and another one)

This is a misprint from 2003 created, presumably, when a batch of Hau Nuva masks failed to be injected with red dye properly. Each mask is different, with varying amounts of red and clear. They are very rare; five were found in a bag of misprints and prototypes given to Black Six by Binkmeister at BrickFest 2009, and at least one was known to exist before then as well. Owned by a few BZP members including Letagi. This mask has never been sold, but its value should be similar to that of other misprints and prototypes from the early years.

Tan Kraahkan - $??

Two of these were sold on BrickLink from the store Magicbricks in 2017 for an unknown price.

Green Movie Edition Kraahkan - $?? (more pictures)

Pictures of this mask turned up on Imgur in 2021. Confirmed as real by BZP member DeeVee.

One-of-a-kind mismoulds - $??

Also known as short shots; created when not enough plastic flows into a mould. These are supposed to be found and discarded during the quality control process, but occasionally one slips through.

Mismould Noble Komau (top) Found by BZP member Baraklava.

Mismould Noble Huna (top) Found by BZP member LightPurpleKrana.

Mismould Kaukau Nuva (back) Found by BZP member banana92.

Mismould yellow Hau Found by a BrickLink seller and sold in 2022.

Prototype Kraata - $??

These were discovered in 2022 by BZP member Kraata Kink (RohiaBuilds on Instagram) after ordering what he thought were regular Kurahk Kraata. These arrived instead. Only two full sets exist, and are owned by Kraata Kink and Letagi. Individual prototype Kraata have been given to a few other members of the Bionicle community at Lego conventions.

Gold Kraata - $??

In 2003 a gold-coloured Kraata was found inside a Kraata can. It is thought to be one-of-a-kind. The owner posted a topic with images to BZP, which is no longer accessible. It is now owned by Toa Lhikan Hordika.

Platinum Avohkii - $15,000

This is a one-of-a-kind mask presented along with a prize pack to the winner of the Search for the Seventh Toa Sweepstakes contest held in late 2003. It is one of the rarest pieces of LEGO ever made, and possibly the most valuable. This is a solid platinum mask (likely either 900 or 950 purity); the value of the metal by itself is around $4,000.

After the aforementioned contest, this mask disappeared for almost ten years until it was sold by the original winner to a California AFOL (adult fan of LEGO). In early 2014 it was purchased by Mask Collector for $15,000. See this topic for more information: http://www.bzpower.com/board/topic/12355-platinum-avohkii-video-pictures-from-owner/?do=findComment&comment=653688

Metru blue Matatu - $X00

This mask was probably a prototype for the Vhisola set in 2004. Prior to 2009, it was extremely rare, but at least eight more were found in the previously mentioned collection of miscellaneous rare collectibles given to Black Six by Binkmeister at BrickFest 2009, as shown in this picture. There are now a few owners of this mask including Ballom, DeeVee, Sumiki, Takuta Nuva, Toa Lhikan Hordika, and Letagi.

Metru red Huna - $X00

Probably a prototype for the Nuhrii set in 2004. Rarer than the Metru blue Matatu since several more of the latter were found in 2009. One is owned by Toa Lhikan Hordika and another by Mask Collector.

Silver Great Huna - $??

Probably a prototype for the Toa Vakama set. There are possibly around a dozen of these masks; Brickthing, DeeVee and Toa Lhikan Hordika are confirmed owners.

Silver Great Matatu - $??

Probably a prototype for the Toa Nuju set. There are far fewer of these than of the silver Great Huna.

Gold Kanoka - $200

This was a gold-plated Kanoka disk that had three sources of availability: via a contest run in 2004 through the release of the Toa Metru, through a contest in the German LEGO Club magazine, and as a prize for LEGO brand store building competitions. Initially, it had an estimated value of $50 based presumably on the gold; today, it is very difficult to find and is not sold often, hence the inflated value.

Numberless Disk of Time - $?? (comparison with regular Disk of Time)

A very rare version of the Disk of Time that lacked the number 199, presumably a misprint. Owned by Toa Lhikan Hordika. Another was found by BZP member Dr. Johnathan Crane in a Keerahk set that was meant to include a regular DoT, but was destroyed.

Three Virtues Kanoka - $??

Another extremely rare Kanoka, with the Unity, Duty, Destiny symbol printed on the front. Owned by Toa Lhikan Hordika and DeeVee.

San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) Kanoka - $??

This disk was seen on limited edition Toa Vakama sets, but due to a production error was not packaged with them. Instead, the few that exist were given out to LEGO employees. Owned by Toa Lhikan Hordika and DeeVee.

Bionicle 2015 (G2)

Any and all rare collectibles from the 2015 reboot of Bionicle.

Clear 2015 Hau (NYCC 2014 exclusive) (in standard package, and lots more) - $50 (reference)

About 1500 of these masks were made. Most were distributed at New York Comic Con 2014. These came in one of two types of packaging: one for the NYCC Bionicle booth (picture linked to above), and another for the NYCC Bionicle VIP event. The latter was limited to 100 copies and is very rare; there's currently one on BrickLink for about US$2500. Most of the rest of these masks were given to BZPower. They were also given out to Black Six, Tufi Piyufi, Roa McToa, DeeVee, Kakaru and Retinence about a month prior to NYCC 2014.

The listed price refers to only the mask. Sealed packages usually sell for higher amounts.

Translucent neon green Scorpio mask (SDCC 2015 exclusive) (out of packaging) - $50 mask only (reference), $100+ sealed (reference)

This mask was given out during San Diego Comic Con 2015. It's not known how many were made.

Translucent blue 2015 Kaukau (out of packaging)

This mask was given out as part of the LEGO Inside Tour. It was limited to 200 sealed units for the public and another 50 unsealed masks that were reserved for internal use. A few sealed masks are on BrickLink for upwards of $1000, but none have sold in the last six months (as of 16 August 2021).

Solid/translucent orange 2015 Hau (top right)

DeeVee and Kakaru received these, and it's possible some of the other members listed above did as well. It seems to be a slight misprint of the normal translucent orange 2015 Hau.

Solid gold Skull Spider mask

This was the grand prize for the Battle for the Gold Mask competition run by LEGO in late 2014, which was a building contest that included six LEGO fansites. It was produced in 14K gold. The winner was announced as being Roa McToa of BZPower.

Solid gold Toa masks

Each of the six Toa masks were made in solid 14K gold, and given away via a photography contest hosted on social networking sites. BZP member ksprice45 is the confirmed owner of the gold Pakari; the owners of the other five are unknown.

Solid gold Mask of Creation

This mask was given to the winner of the Bionicle Mask Maker contest in 2015.

Flintsmith Customs

A number of original masks have been made by BZP member Flintsmith. Although not official collectibles produced by LEGO, these are highly sought after by collectors and are thus included here in a separate category. As for prices, some of the estimates below are based on individual purchases and so may not reflect accurately on a sale of a given piece today. Others are prices set by Flintsmith.

More pictures can be found here: https://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=142169

Translucent purple Kaukau - $25 (on left)

Flintsmith made at least a couple batches of these in 2005, and it is considered his signature piece. He no longer makes them. Flintsmith values these at the noted price.

Metallic Purple Akaku - $55

Allegedly only four of these were made, but this isn't confirmed. One is owned by me; I am unaware of the whereabouts of any others. The noted price is based on CzaR's sale of this piece to me at BrickCon 2010.

Translucent orange Miru - $20

Flintsmith made several of these in 2014. He values them at the noted price.

Metal Vahi - $50-$100

Flintsmith made several Vahi out of aluminum bronze (gold-coloured, pictured) and lead-free pewter (silver-coloured). One of the pewter Vahi was sold for somewhere in the ballpark of $50-$100 several years ago on eBay by the_sim, but I have no recollection of who bought it.

Metal 2001-2003 Kanohi - $??

Flintsmith made several Kanohi from 2001-2003 out of various metals.

Metal Krana - $30

Flintsmith made Krana of all variations out of several types of metal, including sterling silver and white metal. He is planning on making more, and values them at the noted price.

Metal Kraata - $??

These were bimetallic, or made out of two types of metal, to reflect the two-tone look of set Kraata.

Brass Kanoka - $??

Flintsmith made at least one of these.

Binkmeister Prototypes and Misprints

As mentioned earlier, Black Six was given a bag of misprints and prototypes by Binkmeister at BrickFest 2009, which contained pieces ranging in year of release from 2001 to 2009. These were distributed among BZP members via contests, draws, and by Black Six at LEGO conventions. They were always given out with the understanding that they were not to be sold; thus price estimates do not exist. The numbers to the right of each item refer to roughly how many were in the bag; however, these numbers might not be 100% accurate, and even if they are it doesn't necessarily mean that no more exist.

Metru-blue-with-white/white-with-Metru-blue Miru - 2, 4 respectively

Clear Bohrok Faceplate - 2

Marbled red/clear Hau Nuva - 5

Light gold Avohkii - 8

It would be helpful to have a clearer order to them. At least separate the one of a kind/ultra-rare items and the fan-made items form the more practical items.

Is the UK Copper Huna really worth that much? If so I need to freaking sell my extra...

Thanks guys, for putting this together! Should come in handy.

That's a nice overview. May I add a few things?

The UK Copper Huna was also released through a Nestlé promotion in Germany and possibly other countries as well.

The Gold Hau was also given to the winner of the website contest in 2001, BZPower's admin Binkmeister and former web developer at LEGO.

The Infected Hau Nuva were first found in issue #1 (I think) of the German BIONICLE Magazine in 2003.

Gold Kanoka discs were also distributed in a contest in the German LEGO Club Magazine in 2006.

This is awesome! Just a few things I would like to add:

-Toa Lhikan Hordika also owns a Brown Komau. I believe fifi2004 owns one too.
-Kanoka 175 came with some Danish Bionicle comics and not in Kanoka packs.
-The UK Copper Huna is worth $15 at best, but even that is a stretch.

Posted (edited)

Brown Komau - $800vii

A misprint or prototype from 2001, this mask was apparently included in a Lego variety pack in Europe, possibly the Netherlands. Very few of these exist; one is owned by ccso35, and another by Mask Collector.

I own one of these too

Metru Blue Matatu - $500

This mask was probably a prototype for the Metru Matoran in 2004. Prior to 2009, it was extremely rare, but several more were found in the previously mentioned collection of miscellaneous rare collectibles given to Black Six by Bionicle Rex at BrickFest 2009. There are now several owners of this mask, but it is still exceptionally difficult to find.

I have one of these as well.

Metru Red Huna - $600

Same story as above. Rarer than the dark blue Matatu since several more of the latter were found in 2009.

And one of these.

Numberless Disk of Time - $??

A very rare version of the Disk of Time that lacked the number 199. Only one is confirmed, and is owned by Toa Lhikan Hordika.

Here's an image of this one.

And here's a side by side comparison of this with a standard Disk of Time.

Three Virtues Kanoka - $??

Another extremely rare Kanoka, with the Unity, Duty, Destiny symbol printed on the front. Also owned by Toa Lhikan Hordika.

Here's a much higher quality pic of this one.

San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) Kanoka - $??

This disk was seen on limited edition Toa Vakama sets, but was not packaged with them. Instead, it was only available at San Diego Comic Con 2004. Also owned by Toa Lhikan Hordika.

As far as I know, this disk was not distributed at SDCC 2004.  As you said, it was going to be given out in the SDCC Vakama sets, but due to a production error, the canisters were instead sold with an apology because the buyers would not be receiving the disk pictured on it.  I believe the few in existence were given to Lego employees.  Here's a better picture of it as well.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm glad the topic was well-received. I've updated the post with the relevant information and changed the value of the UK copper Huna from $25 to $15.

55555 - The current order is based on year of release, and often that means type of item as well (i.e. all the Kanoka were released in 2004, so they're all together). If more people agree that ordering everything based on value would be a good idea I'd be happy to make the adjustment, but I'd rather leave it for now since redoing all the footnotes would take a while. :P

Bike - I've included owner lists for the ultra rare pieces, but lists for pieces like the VMKK would be pretty long and difficult to keep accurate since quite a few people own them.

I can confirm this. I want to say that Takuma Nuva has one as well, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

Will you be expanding this list to include other masks, such as the white-with-Metru-blue swirl Miru? I don't know if you're going to expand to include a bunch of prototypes in this list, but if you are, that'd be one to include. (I got mine at BFVA '11.)

One thing a lot of people don't know is there is a difference between the two Copper masks. some people think they have the more valuable copper huna, when the US version was much easier to find.

I've checked, the Hunas I have aren't translucent and keep their color when held in front of a light.

Great, I wanted to do something like this for a long time. A few of my observations:

1. Wouldn't it be far easier to make this a spreadsheet and post a download link? It can be split into categories and additional info can easily be added.

2. I think that sets like the big combiners (Takutanuva, Voporak, ...) and polybags (year functions, minifig polybags, ...) and good/bad guys should be added

3. It should be split into some categories, like masks from special sets (power  pack, movie krahhkan), masks from promotions (vahi, shadow kraata), limited rare masks (metal masks/krana, golden kanoka, ...), misprints (european) and prototypes (metru color noble masks, lihkan's kanoka, proto sets)

Anyways thx for tha hard work, and i will report any info i find out.

If I can get a comprehensive list from Black Six of all the items in that bag, then I'll definitely include it here. I think he did make a topic along those lines on the old forum. I'll probably PM him soon about it. It really would just be a list of all the pieces and how many of each exist, since we have no background information on any of them and estimating values would be impossible.

Thanks for the suggestions. Here are my thoughts:

1. That's a good idea; I initially typed the post out in Microsoft Word so I can definitely attach the original document if I edit it to include recent updates.

2. The big combiners wouldn't really belong in a list of collectibles; the only sets I've included here are either rare prototypes or are relevant to a collectible (i.e. SDCC Toa Vakama). As for the polybags, they might make sense to include since they were promotional.

3. I've been thinking about reorganizing the post; right now everything is in order of year of release but categories might make more sense.

The Binkmiester Prototypes were always distributed under the understanding that they would never be sold. With that in mind I don't think that they belong on this list. What would be great would be a link to B6's full list of Bink Protos and a note explaining that selling them is taboo. EDIT: I'm I the only one who thinks this? I may be remembering some statement as more important than it actually was.

A few masks, such as the New Gold Avohkii, reached the open market through other routes though, and those could be included here in the ultra-rare category.

A few ultra-rare kanohi showed up on Ebay a few years ago, including one New Gold Avohkii which sold for ~$200 to a (now banned) BZP member. It is feasible that TLH bought it from him. I have a New Gold Avohkii of my one which I was given by Black Six at Brickfair a few years ago. I think all New Gold Avohkiis are really prototypes, and they reach the open market through the same mysterious European channels as things like Dark Blue Matatus and White Hunas.

You're right about the selling thing; I forgot to mention that in my last post. I actually PMed Black Six earlier today and he provided links to a directory of pictures of all the pieces from Binkmeister. The file names are not descriptive of the pieces however so I think I will put together a list of all the prototype collectibles with links to the pictures. I'll leave out the prototype non-collectibles, unless you guys think they should also be included.

BTW, the Chronicler's staff came out in 2003 with the Bionicle: The Game in the UK and Ireland. :)

Thanks! Adjustments have been made accordingly. :)

Also, I've decided to reorganize the post into categories, which will make editing much easier. Not sure when I'll get around to it; probably the next couple of days. What do you guys think about the footnotes for price-related information? Should I incorporate everything into the individual entries or leave it the way it is?

I would suggest incorporating everything into individual entries. It makes it less confusing. :)

I also believe the prices for the Brown Komau and White Huna are a little high. I would probably put them more in the $400-$600 region, but even then I think the valuation of the Brown Komau is still high as it is slightly more common than the White Huna. I mean, I know more people with those than a GPKK Yo, and that is apparently worth less.

But that is just my two cents. :P

I remember seeing a white Huna on eBay sell for close to $3000! Lol I think the price of each is decent. It really just depends on the seller.

1st of all - great job! ;)

2nd, there are two things missing :

Tan Kanoka (tanoka) - it was given, i think, in 2005 in billund, along with the black one. these 2 are not "kanoka", but throwing disks (from the throwbots/slizer era)

Glow-in-the-dark Kanoka (plain) - afaik, these are kanoka prototypes

picture of both can be found here http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Ehthak/forsale/thumbnails/image_8.jpeg

Yeah. the tanoka is missing, and also several people have said that the solid black kanoka is also from Billund pick-a-brick around 2005. There was also a solid gold plastic kanoka, which i don't know where it came from. And then there is the old dark gold variation of Krahhkan from one of the bionicle playsets, most of them have the newer light gold version (like with the bley rhotuka). And there is also a 5-holes on the chin version of Krahhkan, which i think nobody knows how happened, but there are several known to exist.

About the prototypes, I for one would like to see even non-collectible prototypes, but i guess it doesn't have that much of a priority...

Most of them have the dark gold ones. The pearl gold ones are rare.

I can back that up also. The pearl gold is beautiful, I long for one.

According to Bricklink one was actually sold this month for 1.55€...

Does anyone know how valuable the mask actually is?

Not valuable, but still rare. Just like the 175 Kanoka. I'm so annoyed! I wanted that Kraahkan :(

Alright, the post has been completely overhauled with recent suggestions. I've divided everything into categories, added the Binkmeister prototypes in their own separate category, and added the last few items that have been mentioned.

Also, I've been thinking about the price estimates for the rarer pieces, and I think that placing precise values onto them doesn't really make sense since most of them sell for a range of prices, if they sell at all. So I've changed some of those estimates to more general approximations of their value.

Let me know what you all think of the updates.

The updates look great!  Just throwing this out there, but I've noticed that I have higher quality pics of some of the pieces that you've got listed than the pictures you've linked to.  Here's my Collectibles folder on Brickshelf.  Feel free to use any pictures from there for reference.

Also, you're missing the GITD Kanoka (prototype for 2004 Kanoka disks).  Here's a pic of it and last I checked, the approximate value was $10.

Thanks for the links. I've changed a few of the pictures that weren't such high quality.

I actually did list the GitD Kanoka, but it was under Common so you might have missed it; I noticed someone selling a few hundred of them for something like a dollar each on BrickLink a couple years ago so I didn't think they were worth anything, although a year or two prior to that I had bought mine for around $10 and since you can corroborate that I've listed that as the value. I also didn't have a picture of it.

If anyone has clear pictures of the Tanoka, five-hole Kraahkan, or light gold Kraahkan by any chance that I can use that would be much appreciated. Also, does anyone know anything about the Sand Tarakava? Was it ever actually made?

Thanks for this thread Letagi! Loving it!

There is in fact at least one Sand Tarakava confirmed in existence, owned by PurpleDave of "the website that shan't be mentioned". Came with the prototype yellow ruru. Easy enough to google for pics, but I dunno if we're allowed to link to the MoD site here. Not sure if the set has changed hands since though...

And I read somewhere that there were originally 5 Sand Tarakavas made, this is probably unconfirmed hearsay though.

If we're getting into polybag promos, I would like to know about the "Kraatu" set from 2003/2004(?). Can anyone confirm that this thing actually existed bagged with instructions? Easy enough to part out/build the set, but a new sealed set has been eluding me.
