The coroner smiled when his expertise was called upon. "Ah yes, there were a few things quite unique about the bodies. You see, when I first did some preliminary examinations I found that there were heavy chemical imbalances in the brain, however the victims had no signs nor histories of drug use, so I was quite puzzled by the imbalance. That's when I found something even more interesting."

As the coroner explained the situation, he walked over to a brown paper bag on the counter and took out a sandwich. "See there appeared to have been bites taken out of the brain." He illustrated his point by taking a bite out of his sandwich. As if realizing the oddity, the coroner quickly explained himself. "Oh, don't be alarmed by the sandwich by the way, I just left it here, it's not like I eat with the corpses because I'm lonely."

"Anyway, I was curious to see if such stuff had happened before, so I talked to a few colleagues, and well there were a few other officers killed in the line of duty with similar bite marks. Plus the other interesting part was that all of the deceased were Persona Users, now I don't know all the details behind their deaths, but it's interesting. Anything else I can help you ladies with?"

"All of the recently deceased had Personae?"

This was interesting.

She didn't really know what to make of it though.

Uh...

...

...

"Just what chemicals were out of balance? Was it just the general imbalance that caught your notice or were there any specific chemicals that you feel need more attention?"

Yasmin looked at Clara, wondering if she had any questions of her own.

It didn't take much for Clara to realize that with Yasmin and her being officers and persona users, they could easily be next.

Best not to think about that. "These other officers, do you know what they were doing at the time of their death?"

"Enrique." Where, precisely, Enrique had found a salsa music station in the middle east was a question Whatley didn't feel like pondering right now and, frankly, he'd stopped questioning it after the man had managed to locate a Russian opera. To his credit, it only took a few more seconds for his would-be driver to notice that he really ought to get his feet off the dashboard and assume a position that could be professional if one tilted their head and squinted.

"Oh. Uh. Hey boss?"

"Next time go for the salute and nervous grin. It might work better. We're going back to the embassy."

"No luck then?"

"Make you a deal, don't ask another question and I'll let you keep the music on."

I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are the good people and the bad people. You are wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.

"Just a general imbalance, endorphin, adrenaline, just about everything was spiking, like the brain didn't know what it wanted to do. As for the officers I'm not entirely sure, I'd check with HR."

IC: Yasmin

"Ah, okay." Yasmin looked over at Clara. "Any further questions or...?"

IC: Jake

Jake backed out of the line of fire, allowing the blasts to barely miss him. One stream of acid was batted away by his Persona, and fizzled on the ground. Quirinus launched another attack, this time trying to slice through the leg joint of the closest construct.

Okay, throwing the spear wasn't a good idea. It dissolved and reappeared in her Persona's hands. The acid was dealt with by a shield she projected around Jake, who happened to be in front of her.

Allies already? Yes. She wasn't the kind of girl to deny an alliance on the first trip to a nightmarish universe full of brick-monsters out of some video game and mountains of madness out of some Lovecraft tome. Giving her Persona another few meters of leash, she urged it to charge forward and stab at the leading brick-monster.

The blow struck true, but failed to do what Jake had intended his Persona to do. It scraped against the hard brick, causing the shadowy entity to roar in what could be construed as pain. A miniscule amount of ... something ... was beginning to ooze slightly out of the wound. While his attempts at defeating this creature had not been exactly successful, it did prove to Jake and the others one thing: for all the toughness of these beings, they could be harmed.

Yet if the blow's intent had been deterring the lead being from resuming its attack, it had failed. The brick monster caught George's lance in its hands and swung, seeking to slam the ethereal paladin into the side of the wall.

Both the brick monsters and St George were solid beings, beings of magic, yes. But solid. The dragonslayer's lance was a more ethereal construct. As the monster threw it's weight around, trying to topple the knight, the Persona let the spear dissolve into it's constituent energies, to be reformed at a later time. Presumably off balance, the monster was a prime target for a fistful of holy steel and righteous fury, backed by the knight's sizeable mass.

Because two hundred and fifty centimeters of aforementioned holy steel weighes quite a bit, you know?

Behind the fight, muscles tensed and ready to bolt in any direction, Michelle called out to the other two, specifically Lauren.

"Any support would be great!"

The brick monster shrieked in pain as it staggered back, its face beginning to crack somewhat from the powerful blow that Saint George had delivered to it.

For all its defensive ability, the creature had revealed an opening, even as two of its compatriots broke off an acidic assault to lumber towards Michelle vengefully.

Was the risk worth it?

Pushing the attack could KO the monster, but two of it's compatriots were advancing on her. Could she trust the others to react quickly enough to defend her while her Persona was knee deep in the monster melee?

...

She had faith they would, even if they were strangers. They were in this together now!

Taking advantage of the monster's stagger, St George executed a combo, rematerializing his lance and slamming it down onto the monster's already cracking visage.

IC: Jake

This time ready for the acid blasts, Quirinus raised his own spear, and a golden shield erupted from the point to protect the three persona users, on which the acid fizzled and dropped to the ground. Dropping the shield, Quirinus dashed forward to intercept the two advancing constructs. He jumped and landed lightly on ones back, driving his spear two handed straight towards the back of the monster's head.

The lead creature's demise happened quicker than any could have expected. Saint George's spear pierced straight through its face, shattering the brick apart. Lights blinked out of what remained of its eyes as its body crumbled and dissolved into an acidic goop on the ground. It was rapid, but a decent smattering of the corrosive substance splashed onto the Persona and even towards Michelle, a final, vengeful grasp at hurting those that it had considered its prey.

In its death, the other four monsters seemed to obtain renewed vigour, with the one that Quirinus was attempting to destroy oozing the acid that made up part of its body at the Roman god in attempt to dislodge the Persona, while its compatriot continued to move with haste towards Michelle, hoping to take advantage of any possible distractions that could have afflicted the girl in the aftermath of the first creature's death.

Meanwhile, one of the last two had closed in on Jake, swiping a powerful and acidic arm towards the vigilante, and the other moved to do the same to Lauren.

Quirinus ignored the acid eating at the thick soles of his sandals, continuing his stab with renewed vigor.

When the acid monster swung at Jake, to him it was almost comically slow for one used to high-intensity martial arts. He ducked under it, avoiding the acid dripping from the arm, and swung his baseball bat as hard as he could in an uppercut at the things head, fully prepared to step back out of reach the second things got dicey.

The other two were no longer in front of her, meaning she hadn't been able have St George project a shield around them. She had to make a sacrifice to escape the acid.

She threw her backpack of groceries in front of her, the acid ate through egg, beef, flatbread and leafy greens alike. A final chunk of hardy tuber had been the only survivor, a chunk of blackened starch all that was left of her meals to be... St George had been damaged by the attack. His armor already a transmogrification of agony, the only signs of his pain were a red gleam from the golden lion's eyeholes as the acid burnt his right arm, raised in defense. Plate, mail and leather were burnt through from bicep to wrist.

How fast was a brickmonster moving in haste? Quite fast.

Up against a wall, it was hard to retreat, so she instead scooped up a handful of the gritty rock and sand that covered the ground, flinging it into the monster's... Eyes? Well, better than doing nothing while St George retrieved his lance and charged at the creature's back, aiming to crack the creature around the head with the haft of his lance, now wielded one handed in his left hand.

The baseball bat slammed against the creature's head with a resounding crack, but it did little damage, only serving to enrage it every action the humans had done. These beings were of great resilience, with the only fallen creature having done so to the power of Michelle's Persona.

And speaking of Persona, Quirinus must have been a heavy drain on Jake's spiritual energies. The monster fighting with the Roman god rolled forwards, launching its foe towards George.

The monsters would kill the trio for their transgressions. Jake's foe spat acid at the vigilante, while the one fighting Michelle continued to charge in a berserk rage. And a metre away, the final monster swung at Lauren.

OOC: Remember, you will take some damage that your Persona takes as well.

OOC: I said I'd post eventually.

IC: Lauren Lautrec

Lauren ducked under the brick monster's strike and took out her swiss army knife just in case, not that it'd do much. While she leaped back though, her Persona's eyes subtly flickered red, and before she knew it, there were false illusions of her, Jake, and Michelle flanking to the front of the brick monsters, their Personas in tow. The real deals were likely hidden from sight, with only perhaps a flicker to indicate their real position...

Even in this dangerous situation, Lauren grinned. She had never been one to brute force her way through situations. And while it didn't always work.... Trickery was the most satisfying way she knew to solve a problem. All she could hope now was that Jake and Michelle could use the opening her Kitsune Persona provided............

Haven't seen one of these in a long time...

OOC: Well, I found some time anyway to make this post. Also, did stabbing the spear at the monster's neck do nothing?

IC: Jake

While most parts of the monsters were pretty slow, the acid was incredibly fast. As such, it was a close thing, even with the reflexes of a martial artist, to dive to the side, out of the way of the blasts. He scrambled backward from the monster, and in the process noticed what appeared to be himself moving in a different direction. Looking down, he realized that his own body looked like a faint heat haze. He was breathing much heavier than normal though, and while he was used to exhaustion, this felt more... spiritual.

Meanwhile, Quirinus twisted out of the way of George, at the cost of nearly skidding into a pool of acid. Small cuts opened on Jake's back, mirroring the timing and position of the injuries from the fall.

OoC: Quirinus was thrown prior to the spear stabbing true.

NPC: Alleyway of Horrors

The monster, for all its animalistic behavior, was not stupid. Lauren had failed to use her illusions to hide her retreat, and so the appearance of the mirage was sudden and unsubtle. Even in the presence of its illusionary enemy, the creature knew that Lauren was still where it had left her, firing a large glob of acid in the general direction.

OOC: This acid everywhere is slippery ...

Michelle scrambled away from the creature, desperately trying to put distance between her and it.

In her haste, she slipped in a small pool of aside, crashing to the ground hard and quickly. Luckily the fall had put another couple of meters between her and the monster. She kicked her shoe off, the sole had been burnt away by the acid and the bottom of her foot had a large chemical burn on it, making it painful to put pressure on...

Behind the creature, George began to advance once more. She counted four monsters. The one swiping at Lauren, the one that had charged her, the one that had grappled with the Jake's Persona and the one spitting acid at Jake.

If she had had George continue towards the monster that had charged her, he might've been able to strike a killing blow... But the acid was too dangerous, she willed George to project a shield around Jake as the creature spat. She had little time to act before the monster rounded on her, so she scanned the alleyway's walls. Perhaps a fire escape of some type was present? The fighters desperately needed breathing room.
