DUN DUN.

...

DUN. DUN.

Locked.

Loaded.

Ready for war.

Exhaling like a tiger crouched for the inevitable pounce, and equally taut, O'Sullivan awaited the green light, Macha's orange eyes burning with the fury her subtle whites and greens belied, but her pilot more than shared.

"O'Sullivan, you're cleared for launch."

Say no more, ground control. The butcher has arrived.

"EEEEIREEEEEE!" he roared in tandem with the fusion power core aside him, charging out of the hangar and into harm's way.

Reactor levels optimal. Rifle fully charged. Missile capacity at maximum. All systems online. Benjamin ran through the list in his head as the Vernichten came to life around him, monitors powering up and displaying critical system information as well as a view of his surroundings. A few shifts of the controls and the Warrior shifted with them, a quick shakedown of its systems. Satisfied, he eased forward on the controls setting the massive machine into motion. A simple switch on his helmet tuned him into the comm line, as well as the telemetry data being provided by one Kasper Harken.

"Vernichten, moving out."

As soon as the Warrior was clear of the hangar, its boosters kicked in and it moved at top speed towards the designated area. Slower than its lighter counterparts, but still quicker than any of the Gunners that were coming. He closed on the scene in good time, scoping in on the enemy force just as the bombardment began. Quick, smooth twists of the controls sent the Walker into evasive maneuvers, avoiding the oncoming hail of metal. Not without some close calls, however; a massive metal slug flying past his machine's shoulder reminded him that this was not a simulation. He couldn't afford to get hit.

"Armbruster here," He said into the open line, even as the Vernichten impaled its shield into the ground. The machine grabbed the cable on its back, smoothly connecting it to its DMR. A glance at his HUD informed him the connection was solid. "Engaging from a distance. I'll provide cover fire for anyone who needs it."

Sunlight danced across the surface of the Cutie as it twisted through the air, barely managing to weave through the first wave of artillery.

"Armbruster!" Gwen shouted into her comlink, her mech already unholstering its twin pistols and taking aim at the nearest scout; but not firing yet. "Talal; I'm gonna be sticking with you for a while. We watch each others' back, y'hear?"

IC: Christoph Lockheed

Engines were online.

Magazines were fully loaded.

Whirrrrr

Electromagnet already operational.

Good.

Gloved fingers danced across the controls, flicking away at the control switches as power filled the steel cockpit. It was like a sleeping beast, awoken from its hibernation by the rumblings of danger on the horizon. A lever was pulled. Behind the navy-blue flight helmet that covered the entirety of his face, Captain Christoph Lockheed's eyes sparkled in anticipation. His machine seemed to roar with anticipation.

And the metallic titan rose to its feet, horn reflecting the golden sunlight of its metallic surface as its measured yet powerful steps moved it out of the hangar bay, and into the field. One of the few reliable Test Team machines. A development prototype for the next production line of Warrior variants. This was the FAW-007[G], the first of its kind ... and hopefully not the last.

<This is Panama-1, clearing a path.>

Like a shooting star, the titanic blue Warrior burst onto the battlefield, parking itself upon the front lines of Horizon's forces. Shield raised to defend itself, and machine gun prepped to fire, it made its move, bullets exploding from its weapon to strike at the closest enemy Scout.

IC:

Blood roared through her veins as she surveyed the battlefield. A battlefield, how long had it been since something like this had happened? The long rows of armor and looked unreal, like a picture out of a history book of the twentieth century. This didn't happen now.

But... It was, so she couldn't waver in her duty.

One of the enemy machines went down, it's knee joint crippled, forced to support itself on hastily repurposed arms. She saw a friendly IFF blinking, a foot soldier of some type. One of the walkers near the crippled one had opened fire on the retreating sniper. She so far was still unnoted, perhaps due to her range and seemingly innocuous carbine. She however knew it's enhanced capabilities. Bringing it up to a firing position, she aimed for the first walker that had fired on the sniper, a Scout. She picked out the area with the lightest armor and squeezed off four shots. All good hits, the walker went down, torso and cockpit a mess.

She breathed out and back in and aimed for the crippled machine, repeating the process. Four good hits. By this time, they had taken note of her, shots whizzed past as she sprinted for a rocky hill. The impact of the fist sized bullets reverberated through the rock and through her machine as she got on the friendly channel.

"This is Scathath, requesting fire support. I'm pinned down behind the small hill at these coordinates."

Kasper Harken

IC: The haiil of rounds on his former position had stopped, their origin point having been blasted into a collection of rather less harmful pieces by one of Horizon's Walkers.

"This is Scathath, requesting fire support. I'm pinned down behind the small hill at these coordinates."

It also seemed that said friendly was now pinned down. It only seemed fair to return the favor.

"Understood Scathath. I'll see what I can do to get them off your back"

The words went out over the comm channel as Kasper settled into his new spot. A small stretch of plain with a copse of trees nearby. With any luck anyone tracking his shots would think they came from the limited cover offered by the large plants.

Let's see, how best to ruin this person's day? He thought as the cross hairs settled on one of the offending Walkers. After a moment of contemplation his aim shifted to the hand pulling the trigger on the oversized weapon it was currently firing. A pair of shots tore through the thin armor and open joints of the complicated bit of machinery.

After that it was time to move again. Even with the possible decoy provided by the trees Kasper had no desire to repeat the scene from a few moments ago.

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

IC: Sofia.

No amount of simulations could prepare her for this - the raw, terrifying reality of a firefight. The flash of bullets tearing through the air... the roar of gunfire... the reverberating echoes of explosions...

She did her best to stick to the edges of the firefight, using whatever cover she could find. Her walker was too lightly armed and armoured to confront these guys head to head. All she could do was lay down cover fire for her allies, and do her best not to die...

IC:

"Thanks!"

She hazarded a peek around the hill, foliage breaking up her silhouette and hopefully preventing immediate visual detection. The sniper's shot tore into the lead Walker's firing hand, prompting it to immediately raise an off hand shield in the direction the shots had came from and begin a cautious backwards march, it's two fellows advancing to cover it. They were both Warrior models, or close to it, well armored and armed unlike their Scout companion.

Grabbing one of the half meter flash grenades kept at her Walker's waist, she primed it for an aerial burst and quickly took note of the distance to the trio of enemy Walkers on her HUD. Ducking back into cover, she ran a quick calculation or two on the Scathath's on board computers, determining a precise throwing angle for her munitions.

"I'm about to have three sitting ducks at my location. The large hill, about a click from the main firing line. Two fully operational Warriors, one Scout with a ruined primary gun. Gonna need some back up to put'em down."

Taking the grenade in hand, she lobbed it over the hill. Five, four, three, two, one...

A blinding flash. She immediately primed another, counting off ten seconds before throwing it to catch any quickly responding back up.

"Well, Scathath, looks like today's Christmas." A beat, then almost as an after thought, "Talal, watch for incoming. I'm going to be a bit stuck."

Just like the sims. Remember. Just like the sims.

As soon as the flashbangs stopped, Benjamin was drawing a bead on the lead Warrior. The Vernichten responded as smoothly as it did in its tests, shifting the tip of its rifle to accommodate the changes in his aim. But as much as things were the same, he couldn't shake the reality of their difference. If he made a mistake, there were repercussions. If he made the shot, there were repercussions. Didn't have time to think about them. Amidst the roaring thunder and flying steel there was no time for thought.

He squeezed the trigger and a shot went flying, far faster than normal, out of the barrel and straight down its intended path. The shot ripped through layers of armor and into the machine's torso, just north of the cockpit. By his estimation, it would have hit not far from the main power supply. Hopefully it severed something important. Taking a breath, he moved his sights towards the second Warrior, not waiting to see the effect on the first. He heard his DMR eject its spent shot, moving another one into position and cycling up for its next shot. All systems were green, sights were tracking properly-

And then fire pinged off of the shield in front of him, alerting him to the fact that their foes had noticed the enemy sniper. A Warrior with a long-barreled, scoped rifle (nasty looking one, Ben thought) was training its sights on the Vernichten, causing Ben to have it crouch lower behind the shield.

"Huh. Think I made 'em mad. Talal, can you tell if any of those Gunners are aiming at us?"

One of the Gunners was aiming at them; a big ugly piece of metal with nasty-looking assault rifle locked, loaded, and ready to turn the two of them into soldier-coloured smears on the ground.

"It would appear so," Gwen said, readying her mech's two handguns. "Gunner, assault rifle by the looks of it. You take him and I deal with your Warrior buddy over there?"

-==IC: Chloe==-

Chloe frowned. Of all things, it had to be ranged attacks. Inwardly wishing she wasn't such a horrible shot, she skirted the edge of the battlefield, and attempted to keep out of sight for the moment. It was likely a futile exercise, but one she needed for the moment, as she had no way of counter attacking. She just needed something, one little opening... And maybe she would be able to attack.

Scathach and her allies had garnered quite a bit of attention. Between the Warrior’s flashbangs and the support of her allies, one Warrior had been left just shy of inoperable, a Scout was lacking its primary weapon, and the last Warrior was taking a few cautious steps back. The long range, coordinated blitzkrieg, however, had abated; Harken was repositioning, and Armbruster was dealing with impending threats of his own.

Leaving that last Warrior to, in a karmic reversal, call in some support of its own. One of the other midrange Warriors, outfitted with a shotgun and a machete, closed in from the left of her cover, while the other moved in from the right; Their flanking maneuver preceded by an artillery bombardment on Samantha’s position from a Gunner at long range.

Harken wasn’t having as much luck as he had hoped, either. A longer range Warrior outfitted with a DMR, had commenced firing in his direction, seeking to keep its unseen enemy from taking effective action. A shield was drawn close to its body to guard against assault while it waited to see the effect of its barrage.

Christoph’s sudden arrival onto the battlefield made for quite a sight, one that caught his enemy off guard. The Scout fired its thrusters as soon as it sighted the Lockheed Custom, acting to evade the attack it knew to be incoming. Bullets flew from the Warrior’s machine gun, narrowly avoiding anything vital but skimming across and tearing into its right arm. Much of the limb’s armor was lost immediately, and damage to its mechanisms had reduced its effectiveness. But its pilot wasn’t stopping to assess the damage. Pushing forward with all the speed the smaller Walker had, it danced side to side as it closed to effective range and fired a shotgun blast at the Walker’s torso.

On the edges of the battlefield, a burst of assault rifle fire strafed Sofia. A Warrior was closing in on her, seeking to remove the smaller Scout from the equation. Chloe was encountering a similar issue; a sniper’s shot tore towards her Scout, fired from a long-range Warrior hanging back near the Gunners.

******

“Yeeeeeah. That’ll be fun.” Benjamin said, disconnecting his rifle from the Vernichten’s power core and scooping up his shield as he moved away from his previous perch, not a moment too soon as the Gunner’s railguns fired off a pair of slugs that slammed into where he had been moments before.

His attempt at returning fire with his DMR was blocked by the shield of said Gunner’s Warrior escort.

“Yeah. Fun.”

IC: Sofia Scarlett - Riscatto.

Sofia kept moving, knowing all too well that a few good hits from her attacker would probably put her out of the fight for good. She returned fire, concentrating her aim on the Warrior's own rifle as she started running towards the bigger mech.

B-THOOM.

B-THOOM.

Thunder cracked mercilessly, as the 120mm barrel spat sky-splitting fire into the ranks of the enemy, further adding to the chaos and confusion that was the essence of battle. Scoring a hit on a similarly-outfitted enemy warrior charging in on Scathath, Macha immediately repositioned, vanishing like a ghost before oncoming returning fire.

Nobody moved like PJ moved.

"EIRE!" roared forth the Celtic Pilot once more, trading fire with all comers.

The Warrior drew its standard issue shield close to its body, temporarily cutting off its assault on Sofia. As she charged, it returned fire in an effort to keep her from getting too close, taking a few steps back. Some of her bullets had pinged off of its arm, leaving the armor a little ragged, but it was functional enough to return fire.

She bit back a curse, one of the enemy mech's rounds narrowly tearing across the side of her cockpit. Another foot or two to the left, and it probably would've taken her head off.

Taking cover behind a half-exploded hill, she reloaded her weapon, desperately trying to think of a new plan.

IC (As Rojo-Schmetterling)

A simple escort mission they said.

The former pirate bite back a litany of curses, many of which involved the questionable ancestry of the more important colonial families, and their rumored liaisons with numerous members of the more exoetic portions of humanities genetic family tree. He really should have expected something like this. It would just about figure that, on his first mission outside of the FCRC itself, his first mission that didn’t consist of killing drones, giving a lecture to a room of bored officers or the occasional sojourn to some remote base, would get interrupted by what appeared to be an inbound attack.

And a pretty serious one, if the comms traffic he was picking up was any indication.

"Sargento!" They always forgot the “second-class” part when the shooting started for some reason.

As Rojo bite back a sigh and replied. “Sí?”

A rapidfire tide of spanish followed, intermixed with the occasional nonsensical command. “Ya veo.” The ex-pirate contrived to sound as bored as possible. He wasn’t precisely *happy* about the situation, but there was no call to go into hysterics over it. The pilot sighed. “Te he oído alto y claro señor embajador.”

It’ll be good for relations with the Federation they said.

So. What would have been a good, relations-raising stroll through Horizon was going to be a ######-for-leather run for the relatively safety of the Federation base. While the presumably heavily outnumbered Federation forces did what they could to stem the tide.

The ace sighed finally let out a sigh. He was going to be doing alot of that today. He just knew it. Laugh. Cry or sigh, it didn’t change the facts. They had to move now.

Then the shouting in his ear was gone, and much calmer, flatter voice replaced it. Ah. Ms. Stone. Federation liaison to the FCRC. Cool as ice.

Also, precisely no sense of humor. “Pilot. If you please?”

It’ll be relaxing they said.

Mindful the rapidly clearing streets, he coaxed the Schmetterling forwards. A dead run would compromise their maneuverability to ######. Not to mention he wasn’t betting on that limo managing to keep up the Schmetterling.

Which meant he’d have to more or less stride his way through what was going to be warzone. While Stone kept the ambassador from screaming a panicked mixture of threats and orders shouted at him over the commlink. Alright.

He swung the Schmetterling around the corner easily enough. Left turn first. Then right.

The streets had cleared now-and the limo had some fight in it at least. He fancied he could hear the ambassador scream at Stone as they rounded another sharp turn.

Keep moving. They had to keep moving.

There are some good bars in Horizon they said.

He’d lost track of the minutes, as they ticked by. As Rojo shook his head slightly at the realization. He’d focused on the twists and turns, on the road and the mission before him. A quick glance solved the problem easily enough.

Not much time at all. Good. The Federation base-and the relative safety it promised to a certain loud mouthed ambassador was just ahead. Only issue was the relatively wide and clear road they’d need to head down to get there. Open sky, open road, relatively little cover.

This was going to be fun.

If the Federation lines broke, they’d be fish in a barrel. Granted, in his case it’d be a rather unique fish that happened to have a harpoon gun, but said unique fish would still be staring down the barrel of several shotguns.

Still. Nothing for it.

One of these days I’m going to learn to stop listening.

Assault rifle raised, he surged out ahead of the limo, keeping an eye on the sky. If the attackers were going to come for them, he was more than willing to bet it would be from above rather than from ground level. Nonetheless, he swung the Schmetterling's sensors around, side to side, periodically as he moved the Assault Walker further and further down the road, with the limo and it’s no-doubt jostled cargo close behind.

It only took a few seconds, but the fact the pilot was intimately aware of how vulnerable the position was ensured that it felt at least as long as particularly awkward family dinner.

The threat of sudden and total annihilation tended to have that effect. Pirate-turned-soldier had become acquainted enough with that threat to know that much at the least. The fact he'd calculated precisely how long he'd last against an aerial attack in the best case scenario, and that those numbers were not what one would call 'comforting' did not help matters.

An awkward family dinner after a major death in the family then.

Still. If the chronometer was correct, they’d gotten through the killzone-waiting-to-happen and into the base in….45 seconds. Not bad. Not bad at all. As Rojo allowed himself a small smirk and began to key Stone’s commlink. Might as well check up on he-

And then a new set of orders flowed across one of the Assault Walker’s tactical screens.

Well. The Federation must be desperate, if they were going try sending a one-walker diplomatic escort to the frontlines. This was going to be one of *those* missions. The kind that ended with most of those involved wounded. He could tell. He’d gotten a taste for them.

He let out a final sigh, and activated the Schmetterling boosters, rocketing towards the fight.

Well…..bright side, I’ll get to terminate some of that scum before the days out.

Edited by Havelock Vetinari

The Lockheed Custom moved with surprising speed, shield immediately shifting into position to block the burst of shells from the shotgun. Metal stripped away from the surface upon impact, and the rest of the machine seemed to shudder as it pushed back against the force of the attack. Yet once the burst stopped, Its next action, its counterattack, was immediate. The fact that Christoph's target was now in effective range meant one thing, and one thing only.

He could pierce through.

The machine gun swung to face the Scout once again, firing off a torrent of bullet fire towards the centre of mass.

Kasper Harken

IC: Looks like somebody has my rough position. DMR if the shots are anything to go by. Good, I would be more worried if the thing was an assault rifle on full auto.

Designated Marksman Rifles were great for engaging single enemies at range. Capable of putting a round through the cockpit of an enemy Walker at a significantly farther range than that of a normal assault rifle.

Of course they could only do this if they could see what they were aiming at. The tight clusters of giant bullets were probably some of the worst things a person wanted to use against Harken's prototype armor.

The cluster of trees was the first thing to go, vanishing in an explosion of dirt and wood shards. The others slammed into the ground around the area and sent plumes of dirt into the air. Kasper had already been moving out of the area before return fire had started. In all honesty it's probably what saved his life as a trio of rounds slammed into his former firing position.

Weaving through areas of fire and jumping over the new craters in the ground the special forces soldier made his way elsewhere. Trying to take on the mech firing at him would be foolish with that shield up. Best to let it believe it had scored a kill while Kasper went to help one of his beleaguered allies.

Hmmm, where best to...ah.

The Walker currently making it's way around Sofia's rock would find a trio of shots heading for the back of one knee.

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

The artillery was not a huge threat, she was out of the Gunner's line of sight, it's bombardment based on guess work and the more dakka principle. Scathath's head let her keep track of most of it, as did simple backing up from the hill's immediate vicinity, where the artillery was most concentrated. That left her with two flanking walkers, the IFF of Macha barreled into her field of view to tackle the left flanker, that left her with the right...

GM IC:

To turn the tables.” The single sentence floated over the comms to Sofia’s mech, followed by a curse as Kasper’s shot slammed into the back of the Warrior’s knee. It took a single, experimental step forward as the comm went dead, assessing the damage. The leg was responsive, and didn’t give out from under it, but the movement was painfully slow and imprecise.

One more step and it pivoted, leveling its assault rifle at the now just-visible Scout and firing at the crouching mech, aiming to take it out before she had a chance to maneuver.

Machine gun fire filled the air, the Scout firing maneuvering jets in an attempt to evade the Lockheed Custom’s assault. Bullets riddled its right shoulder and, after a few moments, tore through the already damaged armor and severed the internal mechanics. The limb dangled limply, and with it, the Scout’s shotgun.

The attack had been crippling, but the machine had closed the distance. The machete it had drawn with its off hand stabbed towards the Lockheed Custom’s shoulder, seeking to claim an eye for an eye and remove its capacity to use its machine gun.

The surprise attack on one of the Walkers flanking Scathach, in the form of a 120mm shotgun blast, caused the struck Warrior to stagger back. Recognizing his situation, the pilot fired off a few blasts from his shotgun at the Irish pilot and invoked the better part of valor; a small projectile from the back of the machine indicated the activation of its ejection system. The remaining Warrior retreated back from its target for reasons soon apparent.

A lull in the railgun bombardment preceded the firing of the Gunner’s secondary long range weapon system; a VLS launch system integrated into its shoulders, sending a barrage of missiles flying up and arching down towards Scathach’s position. Though difficult to tell past their Warrior escorts, all of the Gunners seemed to be similarly outfitted.

While their humanoid comrades engaged the defensive force, the MBTs and APCs proceeded forwards. Skirting the battlefield as best they could the vehicular force closed in on the sitting largely unmolested.

***

Dingo Squadron, engaging targets.” The lead Raptor pilot reported, firing off one of his machine’s missiles at the oncoming force, taking out a bomber after its short-lived attempt to evade. The rest of Dingo followed his lead, engaging the enemy air support. The first few moments were brutal; four enemy aircraft shot down in one minute causing debris to rain down on the battlefield below.

Their close proximity caused a brief lull, as the Raptor pilots shot past their targets and banked to realign themselves with the opponent. Now that they were in the air they could see their opponents clearly; bombers escorted by an equal number of fighters. The opening salvo had reduced the number of bombers, but the remaining ones carried on while the fighters banked to engage the Federation’s pilots.

The maneuver seemed designed to buy the bombers some time. The fighters equaled the Raptors in number, but the FAW-022 was vastly more maneuverable. Any time the bombers were bought would be paid for in blood. Dingo’s squadron leader locked on and fired one of his remaining missiles, watching it scream towards the other flyer.

And then watched it be shot down with ease, his target’s form beginning to shift.

Hundreds of feet below, a Raptor hit the ground, becoming a twisted mass of flame and metal. The comm lines exploded, chatter filling the airwaves.

Enemy-

***

-Raptors, I repeat, enemy Raptors! Dingo One is down, bombers inbound!

The Colonel’s hands balled into fists. Raptors were the Federation’s newest model, and had not been planned for.

“Colonel.”

“What is it, Lieutenant?” The older woman asked, turning her attention to Noah, seated in front of her. The young officer didn’t look up from her console, though one hand readjusted the headset over her ear to hear better.

“The Colonial ship is approaching, requesting permission to land.”

“Tell it to land at its arranged docking bay, but keep clear of the fighting. Notify all personnel that its defense while it lands is a priority.”

“Aye, ma’am. Fifteen minutes until the Federation warship arrives.”

But as the Warrior began to open fire, Sofia was already moving. The muffled curse, accompanied by the grinding of the damaged metal, made it clear that an opportunity had presented itself, and she was going to make good use of it.

As gunfire tore across where she'd been crouching a split second before, she dived to the side, shouldering her rifle and snatching up her sword. She clambered up over the rise and jumped, slashing down at the Warrior's rifle.

Mother######ers were gonna step up to her, huh? They were gonna try to shove the girl outta her comfort zone? Like her Munequita had some Forrest Gump legs or somesuch ######. Yeaaaah, right.

"White, keepin' an eye out,she reported as she pulled her transformed Raptor up further into the air and scanned the air below her. She had the blood of Somali pirates going back four generations - and scanning for a Walker wasn't that much different than keeping an eye out for a ship.

IC: Christoph Lockheed

Christoph quickly sent the thrusters into reverse, and his machine began to pull away from the battle, seeking to create distance between it and the attacking Scout. But it was not accelerating enough to carry him free. It was still too close, too slow to play keep-away from the far-speedier antagonist unit.

That was okay.

He was only trying to make some room.

The FAW-007[G]'s backpack shifted, and the shot lancer flipped onto its shoulder.

It fired, electromagnetic forces propelling it outwards at an incredible speed, the projectile shearing through the air and into the Scout's machete hand, and hopefully through to the rest of the mysterious machine's body.

Kasper Harken

IC: Tch

The battle was making it's way back and forth in waves and it seemed that it was the enemy force's turn to strike. The fact that nobody was currently shooting at Harken allowed him a second to take a step back and look at the battlefield.

That second allowed him to mark the position of quite a few of the enemy units and send the information across the battlenet.

However staying in the same place for too long was a death sentence on the battlefield, even for him. Kasper took off at a run towards where his teammate was currently engaging an enemy scout, opening a comm link as he did so.

"Sir, enemy personnel carriers are making their way around the battlefield unopposed. They should be showing up on your HUD about now."

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

IC: Susan

"What the... !"

Dingo squadron's leader had just been shot down.

More to the point, the enemy had Raptors too.

"Evenly matched... Not for long one way or another..."

Given how easily how that enemy Raptor had countered the missile shot at it, it seemed that a normal approach would be useless here. Fire-and-forget tactics would serve as nothing more than a distraction.

But a distraction could be useful.

"Fox-three!"

A radar guided missile freed itself from the wing of the NaF-022, hurtling towards one of the enemy fighters, presumably a Raptor itself, even as Susan began to climb in altitude while keeping an eye on her target via the radar. Her hand rested on the transformation controls, even as she hoped that she wouldn't have to use them...

“Yeah. Fun.”

IC:

Meanwhile, Gwen was facing her own Warrior; a metal hunk of semi-automatic death, bristling with armour and arms that a li'l Scout like the Cutie could dream of having ... and all she was a pair of handguns, knives, and her wits.

She cocked one of those handguns.

That would have to do.

Bounding out from behind Benjamin, she bolted, strafing the Warrior with both guns, aiming to cripple its elbows, wrists ... any joints that would let it shoot, really.

IC (As Rojo-Schmetterling)

The battlefield stretched out before the Schmetterling. His first impressions could be summed up with some choice words from one of his trainers in the FCRC.

A few hills and enemy air support means you might just have time to see the attack that kills you.

"This the Schmetterling. FCRC diplomatic detail. Here to assist."

He'd been patched directly into the Federations comms, a nice little gift to go with the new set of orders. Which, increasingly, seemed like a fancy way of saying 'go forth ye heroes and die'. Okay. That was over-dramatic but...not by much. Still. Orders were orders, and right now, he had standing orders to, if he hadn't horribly misread something, to molest that as yet unmolested column of vehicles that were trying to swing around the battlefield. An enemy column if the information flowing across the battlenet was any indication.

He'd set down on one of the few hills nearby. As close to the column as he could manage. It wasn't much, but it was better then nothing. And it might just buy him a few precious precious seconds to panic if the raptors honed in on him. But in the meantime....it took only a few seconds sight in on the enemy column and line up a few shots.

"I have a bead on the enemy column. Engaging."

Choosing his target-one of the centermost vehicles, As Rojo let loose with the Schmetterling's assault rifle. The fact he was aiming for the central column would, hopefully, ensure that even if some of the shots went long, he'd still have a chance of hurting some poor sod in the front or back parts of the column. Besides, if the enemy had any sense, they'd start to scatter if they came under determined fire. A scattering enemy could easily become an uncoordinated enemy, and a uncoordinated enemy could easily become a confused enemy...and a confused enemy was....precisely the kind of enemy you wanted to fight. The only better kind of enemy was an angry one.

I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are the good people and the bad people. You are wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.

"Please tell me you brought more than that pea-shooter, Advisor."

The voice chirped from across the comm, though it was almost completely deafened from the sound of the heavy footfalls of the similarly-hued mech that marched up besides the Schmetterling.  Its main weapon was locked upright in a "safe" position, though the shoulder-mounted missile array was trained on the convoy of vehicles skirting the battlefield.  As if an afterthought, a single ground-to-ground warhead shot out towards the vehicles, if only to test their defenses.

Chloe was having a bad day. Her attempts to get closer to the opposing Walkers was continually being shut down, forcing her to have to duck and weave through the line of fire constantly. Then the reinforcements showed up. Then she noticed the actual infantry growing closer to the city. The pilot was torn, but decided that those troops getting into the city would be bad, and quickly turned around, and boosted toward the fighters that would be more her speed. However, she suddenly stopped, and dashed to the side, as she noticed a missile volley headed the vehicles' way.

Who...?

IC: That's one down, he noted, wasting no time in celebration as he turned the 120 millimeter barrel from on the remaining Warrior--

Which then sailed clear and away from the shot as he fired. That sneaky little shitter!

"Not gettin' away dat ea--" he began, adjusting his aim even as he ran the mech sideway, changing his angle and hoping to flank. However, the Irish braggart forcefully cut himself off as a storm began to play through his audio feed, and a massive bundle of white exhaust trails streaked through the sky towards them.

"VLS incoming! Scatty, yer gonna wanna moove!" He called over the radio.

GM IC:

Despite the element of surprise, the assailants were not having a good day. Despite outnumbering their opponents nearly two to one, they were suffering significant damages. Despite matching even the Federation’s air support, they were bleeding for every inch of ground taken. The entrenched defenders were holding their ground despite the opposition.

Not that the offensive had been stopped in its tracks. The sheer volume of fire from the enemy Gunners had set the Federation’s pilots to ducking behind cover, and one of them had been suspiciously quiet following a VLS missile onslaught. More and more the Walkers and their pilots were being pushed back towards Horizon, forced to take two steps back for every step forward to avoid being overcome by force of numbers.

“Hang in there, guys, backup’s coming.” The familiar voice of Lieutenant Noah carried over the comms, accompanied by the addition of a new Federation IFF on long-range sensors. “We’ve got a Colonial ship setting down, ETA five minutes. Colonel has marked them for defense, priority second only to Horizon. Dingo, what’s your status?”

“Most enemy Raptors have been dealt with, minimal losses.”

“Good. Send three pilots to escort the Colonial ship to their landing. McKinley’s orders.” Barely waiting for the affirmative, Noah was already shifting gears. “3rd and 8th, status report.”

“Not a scratch, ma’am. Enemy convoys have yet to close into range, 8th is reporting the same for the mass driver facility.”

“Affirmative.” Noah took a deep breath. With McKinley at the hangar, she was the highest-ranking officer currently in the Operations Center. The Colonel chimed in from time to time, but she was holed up in her office on the comms with Command. Terse orders aside, Noah knew she was the active official for the pilots in the field.

“Dingo Two, Colonial transport should be just breaking the cloud layer. Escort to bay nine, circle around the northern side of the city to avoid the battle. Have relayed instructions to transport.”

“Yes ma’am.”

Another deep breath. Noah swiveled in her chair to address one of her fellow officers, not taking her eyes off of the display in front of her. “Toselli, any response from the ship?”

“None.” The officer paused, fingers hovering over the controls. “... Lieutenant, the Colonial ship does not match any known Union vessels. It exceeds the size of a standard freighter by at least forty percent, hull isn’t even close. Ma’am, its registry number doesn’t exist.”

“Dingo to Ops, ship is breaking the cloud layer. No response to our hails, but-”

Noah’s heart dropped into her stomach at once, the pieces clicking together in her head. No. No no no no, ######, no. “Dingo, get out of there now!”

“Roger. Breaking off escort formation. Ship is below the cloud layer.” Dingo Two swore under his breath, clearly heard over the comms. “Ops, it’s not a freighter. Repeat not a freighter! What the ###### is that-”

“Godda-”

”No. No.”

Dingo Four went dark first, comm line cutting out without even a second’s warning. Six followed a second later, and Dingo Two’s ejection system started transmitting its standard distress signal moments before his Raptor went down. You could hear a pin drop on the Ops floor, as Noah stared at her monitor in slack-jawed shock. Toselli recovered quicker. the sound of her keys like bullets as she tapped into the base’s video feeds.

AU-06 Liberator.

The name printed in proud, white letters across the bow, just underneath one of the forward catapult decks. A stark contrast to the gunmetal gray beneath it, the focal point in the portrait painted in Noah’s mind. The warship floating over the city, remains of its one-time escorts raining down. Felled, there was no doubt in her mind, by the anti-aircraft cannons affixed to the ship’s sides. Three catapults extended from the vessel’s prow, much like the launch deck of an aircraft carrier. Dual-barreled cannons rested on the sides of the vessel’s prow, set back from the catapults, while a single long-barreled cannon extended from underneath the central catapult. Railguns were placed along its length, granting it a wide range of firing arcs.

“C-Colonel. Major. Are you getting this?”

“I am.” McKinley’s response was instant, calm, and authoritative. “Noah, I want the base’s defenses online. When it turns its sights on us, we’re going to be ready. Contact our backup and tell them to pick up the pace. Colonel, I’m taking direct command of the Walker squadrons.”

“Be careful, Major. We can’t let this base fall.”

“I know. It won’t, on my watch.”

"Sweet Jesus...."

Gwen wasn't focused on whether her shots had landed on the enemy Warrior; she wasn't focused on the Cutie's power levels or ammunition or hull damage or even whether or not all of her friends and comrades were all in one piece and breathing. The massive shape looming over the city -- massive in the way that God is massive, frightening in the way that the headlights of a car screaming down the road towards you is frightening -- its shadow so great that it seemed to stretch to the horizon.

Or to the Horizon.

"Command, what the ###### is that?!" Of course, she already had her suspicions about it ... but maybe, for once, she was praying that she was wrong.

". . . No. . ." Chloe stopped dead, as she looked to the sky with wide eyes. "No no no..." The girl was snapped out of her astonishment by a shot that threatened to pierce the heavens and her walker. Trying to keep her breathing under control, she shook her head, and gripped the controls tightly.

"Everyone, what do we do? I. . . I don't like the looks of that thing... but the... bandits..." The engineer pilot grit her teeth, as her mind raced, trying to think of a plan to get out of this mess.

How exactly she had gotten out alive and back into the game was... Well, it was a matter for another day, a tale for recollection at some later date.

All she could focus on at exactly that moment was the mammoth ship dominating the sky. Even the battle outside seemed silent before the low frequency rumble of it's descent, the next sound she registered was a brief radio transmission, the voice that of the girl that PJ had been with...

"We need to fall back towards the city, we're sitting ducks out here." She said in response to Chloe.

...but close to it
