Pitch An Original BIONICLE Game

aldero

Recommended Posts

We all like... most... of the Bionicle games, right? They're enjoyable, artistically pleasing and capture the essence of the franchise wonderfully. A little too specific if we're talking about the games as a whole, but there's still a lot of potential with this franchise that has been mostly untouched by the current myriad of Bionicle games.

So, if you were to pitch and potentially create a Bionicle game with the determination and incentive that I don't have, what would that game be?

A game that is similar to Lego Marvel Superheroes, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, or Lego City Undercover, but it would be a console version of MNOG, MNOG2, VNOG, or that Legends of Mata Nui computer game. Every character should be in constraction figure form. It would be based on Bionicle 2015-2016. You can explore the entire island of Okoto.

The Toa would be like this:

Level 1 - Masters

Level 2 - Master Golden Masks

Level 3 - Uniters

Level 4 - Uniter Golden Masks and Elemental Creatures to aid them

As for Ekimu, it would be like this:

Level 1 - Normal golden-armored and short form

Level 2 - Toa-sized and blue form

Every single G2 character that came out as a set will be playable. It would be more fun to include a lot of G1 characters for more fun, but you have to buy them with constraction or Technic pieces, which would serve as money in the game (similar to Bionicle Heroes), in order to play as them. The same goes to the G2 villains.

The pieces can also be used to buy stuff, like upgrades for the Toa and Ekimu, like Bionicle Heroes.

Enemies to fight are Skull Spiders, Skull Warriors, Skull Scorpios, Shadow Traps, and 2016 Beasts (maybe).

Bosses include the Lord of Skull Spiders, Skull Slicer, Skull Basher, Kulta the Skull Grinder, the Elemental Creatures (before you can get the Golden Masks of Unity), Umarak (both in Hunter and Destroyer forms), and the 2016 Beasts (maybe). These guys should have boss meters or "boss hearts" similar to Bionicle Heroes, the first three Lego Star Wars games, or the first Lego Batman game, just to know how many times can you hit the boss. Every battle with the boss also involving enemies that the boss commands to his aid (except for the Creatures, who you would have to fight one-on-one).

The levels would be like this:

1 - The Protectors fighting the Skull Spiders

2-7 - In each level, one of the Toa Masters protects people, travels through a region in Okoto with the help of their Protector, fighting Skull Spiders along the way, get the Golden Mask and use it to defeat the rest of the Skull Spiders. In Pohatu and Onua's levels, they have to also fight against Skull Scorpios.

8 - The Toa meet for the first time and fight against the Lord of Skull Spiders. After that, they have to fight against Skull Warriors and Skull Slicer before they destroyed the Arena

9 - After the Toa got free from the debris, they fight against Skull Scorpios before awakening Ekmu. Then, the Toa and Ekimu fight Skull Basher and Kulta. The end to the 2015 storyline.

10 - The Toa Masters become Uniters as they fight against Skull Warriors and Skull Spiders to test their new abilities and weapons

11-16 - In each level again, one of the Uniters must find his or her Elemental Creature and get the Golden Mask of Unity. Along the way, he or she have to fight against the Creature and Shadow Traps, which are standing in their way and harming the Creature. In Lewa's level, he has to also fight Umarak the Hunter.

17 - The Toa test out their new Unity powers from the Creatures and they journey to find the Mask of Control. Along the way, they have to fight Umarak and his minions.

18 - After Umarak got the Mask and turned into the Destroyer, the Toa, Creatures, and Ekimu would have to fight him and the 2016 beasts for the fate of Okoto (just making a theory about what the story in summer 2016 would be like). The Ed of the 2016 story.

The end of the game.

The characters would also get voiced with words by voice actors, like Lego City Undercover, Marvel, and Batman video games.

That's how I would like to have a Bionicle game like this.

Metru Nui.  Your only weapons are your disks, launcher, and a blade.  Parkour around the city, do stunts like chute dives, ride akilini boards and hoverbikes, annoy the Vahki.  Sort of like Mirror's Edge, or Celaria with combat.  You could have the choice of doing a campaign, or pick courses to run around the city.

Or, actually, I recall the videos of that City of Legends prototype game having a decent parkour system, why not finish that up and give it some polish.

Bionicle Smash Brothers.  Enough said.

And I'm always a sucker for Myst clones like MNOG.  Actually I've been waiting for a Gen2 MNOG since Gen2 came out.  Great art, cool story, lots of NPCs, what's not to love?

I want an Age of Empires/Civilization styled game of Metru Nui. You are the Turaga, you must grow and manage the metrus, defend the city from invaders, and advance technology within. Each metru could specialize in a certain resource/skill, hire create teams of Toa to defend the city from Dark Hunter attacks, so much possibilities!

Bionicle Warriors.

Think Dynasty Warriors, but with Bionicle Characters. Basically mow through thousands upon thousands of enemies with relative ease as your favorite Bionicle characters. Contains an original story from the World of Okoto, and plenty of unlockable weapons/characters. I'm not sure what else to add here... It'll make perfect sense if you've ever played any of the Dynasty warriors games (or Hyrule warriors, or Samurai Warriors, or... well, you get the Idea).

The character diversity, Free Play, and open world-ness of the Lego Superheroes games, where you can go anywhere in the Mata Nui Universe, play every character and take on missions both from and new to the storyline. each island is unique and awesome.

In pre-Cataclysm Metru Nui you have to be careful - random assault, breaking & entering and illegal activities brings the Vahki down on you. In the Coliseum, Turaga Dume gives you missions to help the Matoran and city. From time to time, Turaga Dume/Teridax takes over and gives you strange and cryptic missions for veiled yet sinister purposes...

In Daxia you become an Order of Mata Nui agent, globetrotting and being sneakily awesome.

On Destral you become a Brotherhood of Makuta Agent and do evilly awesome things.

On Stelt... BEING A CRIMINAL IS LEGAL.

On Mahri Nui you battle underwater like a boss.

An expansion pack lets you hitch a ride in the Ignika from the island of Mata Nui and land on Bara Magna where you can access that world too - Core War era to Battle of Bara Magna and Reformation.

I'm going to go super old school and say I'd like a Bionicle text-adventure in the vein of Zork. No scratch that, keep it in the genre of interactive fiction, but have all the flavor text for each 'room' be fully narrated and available at several levels of detail(the simplest level just gives the location name while the most detailed is the literary equivalent of scenery porn). No longer restricted by the technical limits of 1980s personal computers, the command interpreter can handle a wider variety of actions and has some capacity for processing full sentences and can accept commands either as typed text or spoken commands. Gameplay consists of exploring the Bionicle world, solving puzzles, and engaging in battle, all output presented as on-screen text or spoken over speakers/earphones and all input via typed or spoken commands. No actual graphics, encouraging the player to use their imagination to interpret the scenes the game paints with words.

To suggest something that might actually sell in today's market: A strategy RPG that uses a menu for getting between stages and services instead of a free-roaming hub world and has fully voiced menus. Don't really care about the graphics as long as it's blind playable.

I was thinking a more legend of Zelda type game. You go around various areas fighting monsters and such. And you get upgrades by finding the golden masks.

A Zelda-type action-adventure game could be an interesting fit for Bionicle. Generally the games I most enjoy playing skew towards adventure games, and they tend to be a good way to both tell a story and showcase a world and its cast of characters. But Bionicle tends to be a very action-oriented series, both in terms of the Toa (powerful action heroes) and the sets (which have action features that generally represent combat moves). So I think an action/adventure game is perhaps the most natural fit for the series. It would be a good balance between the adventure-style gameplay of the Mata Nui Online Game and the more action-oriented gameplay of a lot games that focus on the Toa.

There are a lot of Zelda-ish elements to the Bionicle story, particularly the Bionicle G2 sets and story. For instance, the frequent use of temples as settings, the motif of collecting and using masks, and enemies you defeat by hitting specific weak points. Skull Spiders and Skull Warriors even sort of resemble Skulltulas and Stalfos.

One matter that might complicate things is that the Zelda games tend to be fairly solitary (just Link and a "sidekick" or a few interchangeable Link clones), whereas the Bionicle story tends to involve a LOT of teamwork. And this is something that no Bionicle games other than the Mata Nui Online Game and Maze of Shadows have ever really managed to reflect. Almost invariably, past Bionicle games that let you play as a Toa at all have you play out solo quests featuring an individual Toa. You might switch from one Toa to another in between levels, but that's about the extent of it.

This is likewise an issue with many action RPGs like Skyrim and Mass Effect, which only feature one "player character", and any teammates you have are computer controlled. Conversely, many of the LEGO games (ironically, not including Bionicle Heroes) do let you play most levels using multiple characters with discrete abilities. You only can control one character's actions at a time, but you can switch which character you control and which the AI controls, unlike some action RPGs like Skyrim and Mass Effect where you only control one player character and have more limited control of your teammates. LEGO Marvel's Avengers even lets you do special moves by teaming up two characters. So maybe a Bionicle action/adventure game could borrow a bit from that formula?

Bionicle RPG: Temple of Time

Play as any of the six Toa, going on quests on their home planets. Ends with all six Toa facing off with a battle against Makuta and shadow minions like "Confrontation", only more sophisticated.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Bionicle MMORPG: Great Being Civil War

Play as any of the Matoran Universe races in a quest to be the ruler of Spherus Magna, as opposed to all of the other players and NPCs fighting against you.

Actually if they were able to get a legend of Zelda style game with characters you can switch between that would be pretty innovative. Could actually get some attention from the industry. Though to be fair I doubt Lego would go through with it. They seem pretty determined to stick to the TT games formula.

It's time to move on.

To be fair, something like that seems like a natural adaptation of the TT Games formula–probably moreso than TT Games' past attempt at a Bionicle game, Bionicle Heroes, which they decided to turn into a shooter instead. A team-based action-adventure game with puzzle-solving and perhaps slightly more evolved combat than your average Lego game seems like a much more natural fit for the developers AND the series.

Frankly, they did break from the TT Games formula in a lot of ways for Bionicle Heroes. Just not (in my opinion) the right ways. If they'd kept trademark elements of the TT Games LEGO titles like the character switching, the storytelling elements, and the more versatile attack styles instead of making the bizarre choice to make it an over-the-shoulder shooter with little to no story, I think it could have been a much better game. Some of the TT Games titles like LEGO City Undercover and LEGO Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin have done a much better job crafting original stories around non-licensed themes. It makes me wonder if TT Games might be able to do a better job with a Bionicle game today... but then, I'm not sure if they'd want to take that risk again after flubbing it so badly the first time.

EDIT: Ninja'd by my own brother!

I like the idea of controlling multiple characters in a group. Star Wars KOTR allowed players to manage a main character and two support characters during quests. TT's games often allow players to switch between multiple minifigures. It seems like a good fit, and would avoid the issues of a single player RPG (as much as I love Skyrim, sometimes I wish the NPC's could be played by friends in multiplayer)

Why don't we simply support the Legend of the Toa mod for Skyrim? I think it's our best bet for an actual video game. Not only are the guys behind the mod very skilled, but they're also hardcore Bionicle fans. They're doing their best to capture the atmosphere of Bionicle. Heck, they're even using Tales of the Tohunga for reference, for which I love them!

Sadly, the developement is somewhat slow, which is understandable. Maybe we should set up a fundraiser to endorse the team to speed things up.

Great idea, but giving them money for their MOD could run into legal issues with both Bethesda and Lego. Best to wait slowly for them to finish the work, and then enjoy it when it arrives.

My ideas are for mobile.

First one, basically replacing Mask of Creation with a singleplayer MOBA/ARTS-like game...or basically Warcraft, where you the TOA fighting alongside your villagers against the skull spiders/villians.

Second would be a city-builder like Simpsons:Tapped Out or Avengers Academy where you get to build the koros of Mata Nui or the villages and Ancient City of Okoto to your liking.

A massive, ever expanding Generation 1 fighting game where all canister sets, most Titans and some combiner/alternate models are playable characters. Different incarnations of characters, such as Mata/Nuva/Phantoka/Mistika/Stars, are treated as separate characters. That would answer most "who would win" questions. Then maybe Generation 2 characters as DLC.

By the way, LEGO puts some of its older games on Steam. Do you think the only reason stuff like BIONICLE: The Game and BIONICLE Heroes are absent is because they don't want to distract from Generation 2?

I'd go for a Dragon Quest-like game about Takua travelling around whatever island he happens to be on, making friends, fighting foes, stealing totems, and generally helping out the villages and stuff.  Basically, the MNOLG as a JRPG, with Takua getting his buddies earlier and some more content.  It doesn't necessarily have to be Mata Nui, Spherus Magna, Okoto, or any other existing land- in fact, I'd prefer an entirely new setting that draws upon prior canons to make something still Bionicle-y yet at the same time wholly different for more creative freedom (and an excuse to make up as many new sets as possible!).

It is not for us to decide the fate of angels.

Dominus Temporis, if you're out there, hit me up through one of my contacts.  I've been hoping to get back in touch for a long time now.  (Don't worry, I'm not gonna beg you to bring back MLWTB or something.  :P )

I don't think LEGO would be so concerned about that. The vast majority of Steam users who are avid LEGO fans and buy their games would be more jaded and experienced fans of the company. The discouragement of a newer line would not faze LEGO at all if we have those avid fans in the first place.

I think it's more a matter of further encouraging and promoting their more recent games made in partnership with TT Games. It's not going to stop me from playing MNOG on Steam, though.
