IC: Galrax "Spirit" - The Finish Line

She shrugged. "I mean, if people keep getting hurt badly I doubt they'll keep it up. Can't have a buncha injured hunters. No way to make money that way." She chuckled at Whisper, and muttered, "Alright, alright, I'll stop. Whatever. If worse comes to worse and some moron tries to start a fight I can just skedaddle."

IC:

Zaryna's next obstacle struck her as medieval, like something Tren Krom would have devised as punishment rather than a creative trainer, and consisted of spinning saws and swinging axes, fire spouts and launchers poised to fire missiles. She observed the gauntlet with a mixture of disdain and awe, momentarily caught by the cacophony. It all seemed so discordant at first, daring the challenged to run through and not be turned to diced slag by the end of it and seize the golden goblet that tantalized her at the far side.

But Zaryna instead took an extra moment to closer inspect the challenge. However stochastic it seemed on the surface, there had to be an underlying algorithm. Everything about the entire maze was fabricated with purpose by intelligent design and every contraption powered by some sort of mechanism—and mechanisms had patterns. Xians were masters of the art, forging intricate multi-use weapons and gadgets based on exacting principles of engineering and repeated the designs over and over again with machines built with the same precision science. Zaryna did not have to understand the science behind it to know there were patterns, she only had to have the general idea.

And she could see the pattern already and began formulating a melody to keep track of it. The layout of the gauntlet was chaotic but the sequence of buzzing blades and spurting fires went off on rhythm, and she designated the former as percussion and the latter as string ensembles, while the swinging axes struck a tune like keyboards in her head, rendered like fingers falling on the line, and the guns, poised to launch, were the wind instruments prepared to blare out at an instant once signaled.

Suddenly, the stochastic gauntlet seemed almost melodious and sang a battle taunt, but it failed to incite her blood to boil. Zaryna saw through the war band and aimed for what hid behind it. What followed was almost a dance.

The fallen princess of the League stepped into the gauntlet without fear, humming the cadences and maintaining pace. She ducked under the blades and slipped between the axes, then paused just long enough under them to dash past the fires when they flickered for an instant. Her high sense of proprioception proved invaluable and she was intensely aware of where she stood versus trap after trap. She understood her enemy and herself and it made all the difference, letting her roll under the volley of cannon shots she triggered and slipped through another fire spout, squeezed between another set of axes and then blades.

Reality slowly filtered back into view once she reached the end. The song was behind her and her humming ceased. She didn't look behind her to give the gauntlet any more of her time before seizing the trophy and pulling it down, activating the lever that opened the door to continue down the maze. All the gauntlet had given her was a mildly scorched shoulder armor and an earworm. The former she could polish away, the latter... not really.

She stepped through the revealed doorway and into the next section of the maze.

* * * * *

When Zaryna exited the maze her head was still held high and a slight smirk of satisfaction was on her face. Her mounted rhotuka launcher still glowed slightly with residual energy. The last challenge had proven much more straightforward for her and required little in the way of tactics. Whatever, or whoever, it was had simply been immolated to ash at her whim.

It was not that the course had been easy for her—to the contrary, her pride was from a hard job well done—but she had proven to be more than its match and quite looked forward to whatever came next.

IC (Shadowboxer): Fresh from his (moderate) success at the disk launcher, Krahua moved on, coming to a door. It opened easily enough, revealing what appeared to be nothing more than a storeroom. A jumble of furniture and machinery littered the room, and in the brief glimpse he had, there seemed to be no pattern to their arrangement. As soon as he had stepped through the door, it pulled shut behind him with a grinding of gears. Krahua found himself sealed inside a dark room, unable to see anything at all. Not even the cracks around the door let any illumination enter. A soft beeping sounded, off in the distance, then silence.

This, then seemed to be the challenge: to navigate through a jumbled room without sight. Krahua hoped that given a bit of time, his Onu-Matoran eyes would adjust, but he had no such luck. The darkness, it seemed, was total. The beep sounded a couple more times, presumably guiding him in the direction of the exit. He followed it cautiously, with arms outstretched so that he wouldn't bump into things without some warning.

He did bump into things, quite a lot of them, but never too badly, he thought. As he moved further across the room, he developed a kind of intuition for where the open space was, the places that were filled with nothing but deep shadow. He couldn't explain exactly why he felt this connection in the darkness, but it proved useful, so he followed it until eventually, his hand alighted on a door handle, and he burst back out into the bright light of Odina's empty plains.

The light burned him, so bright it was almost a physical pain to him. He had been so used to the cool embrace of the shadows that he shrank back into them now, rather than face the brightness of the outdoors. He narrowed the scope of his mask down as far as it would go, and blinked his watering eyes so furiously against the searing light that he was almost weeping. He couldn't remember ever having such difficulty adjusting his eyes before, not even after spending long days underground. Perhaps he had been in that room for longer than he thought.

Eventually though, his discomfort subsided, and Krahua was able to continue on through the maze. Another door waited in front of him, across a tiled area where some sections occasionally rose up to reveal a rope tied to their undersides before quickly sinking back down.

Expecting some kind of trap, Krahua cautiously approached the challenge. To his surprise, however, he was able to walk right up to the door without any apparent retribution. the tiles continued to rise and fall just as they had been doing before he arrived. The lack of any apparent danger was worrying him more than the dark room had, even when he had risked blundering into rusty blades or bringing a heavy cabinet down on himself.

He put his hand to the door - nothing happened. He turned the handle - still nothing. He pushed it open a little way, and it swung open easily - then met resistance. Krahau jumped back as it he had been stung, but the door only swung closed again. The Matoran shook his head. What was this about?

He tried to door again, but figured that it would only open a few inches - not nearly enough for him to squeeze through. As he jammed his head into the gap to get a view of the other side, he saw that it was being held back by a number of ropes affixed to it, ropes that didn't just stop at the doorframe, but wound back into the wall, and presumably back through to his side. They were the same ropes attached to the rising tiles. Understanding filled his mind before he could completely articulate the realisation. He would have to cut the ropes under the tiles, which would then release the door. It would be a test of speed and reaction times, to get to the rope under each rising tile before it sank back into the ground.

Smiling at having worked it out, Krahua jogged back to the front of the tiles, took up a ready stance in front of them. He was confident that he could beat this obstacle, and show why he was codenamed "Shadowboxer". A tile rose not far in front of him, and Krahua jabbed a fist forward. Just as his arm reached its fullest extent, a crackling bolt of shadow energy issued from his fist and crashed into the rope, severing it and leaving the frayed ends looking slightly charred. Another opened up, and Krahua spun towards it, punching out another shadow bolt. This one missed its mark slightly, but his follow-up connected dead-centre.

The rest of the ropes fell, one by one, as Krahua pushed himself to see just how fast he could go, and how few shots he could waste. By the time he was done and the door swung open, the courtyard was a wreck, still trailing a few dark wisps of shadow, but Krahua was smiling broadly. That challenge had actually turned out to be fun, and cathartic in its destructiveness. Bring on whatever comes next!, he thought.

The next challenge turned out to be a mundane net to climb, which he did, though slowly. After that, a series of wobbly rubber pillars provided safe passage across a pit. In this, unlike the net, Krahua was thankful for his small stature and weight.

Across the pit, Krahu turned a final corner to find himself at the finish line, where a number of trainees were already talking about their experiences in the maze. Krahu knew that he hadn't been very fast in getting through, but he was still pleased that he had managed to solve the puzzles and come through relatively unscathed. It seemed that some other hadn't been so lucky, particularly a hulking black brute with green eyes, whose arms looked to have seen shredded.

IC: Nilauhk - Obstacle Course

The next challenge, the ground ahead replaced by pillars that sharply rose and fell, proved difficult, and Nilauhk found herself flung back after just the second step. It seemed they not only jutted out and retracted, but did so at an angle. She paused, thinking. All of them seemed to rise a certain amount every time. She watched for a moment, gauging their heights. And then ran, sliding onto one at the exact moment it shot upwards. Propelled skyward, Nilauhk opened the panels on her amour, gliding down and leaping off the pillar she landed on, her feet next hitting regular dirt.

Well, mostly regular. As she walked forward it started dropping, collapsing into a pit. She tried backing up, but the ground beneath her fell to, the Ga-Matoran tumbling into the turning and now tumbling loose dirt. Her visor kept the dirt from entering her eyes or mouth as she thrashed to stay unburied, but it was neither airtight nor attached to any air supply, so it would be of little benefit if her strength failed her.

And speaking of failing her, keeping herself above the pit of dirt, thrown about to keep it hard to move, was getting hard. She changed tactics, effectively swimming towards the edge. She seemed to be making headway, before a mound of dirt rushing upwards threw her back and onto her back, half-burying her. Her attempts at getting more than her ribcage up freed was met with more tumbling and turning, and her attempts ceased when it was just her head and arm.

She expected black to fill her vision, but...no. Just the sky. Wait, what? Looking about, she saw the dirt had ceased. To test, she sharply threw her arm in an arc. Sure enough, it shifted, moving like water. So, it reacted to her movements, then? Taking yet another approach, she started effectively crawling along, holding her head up as high as possible. While the turning and shifting dirt put her under further strain, she made steady progress, and once she was sure she had passed the pit, stood up, giving herself a moment to catch her breath.

After that, the next obstacle of rolling logs felt insulting. Or, it did, until she saw the spikes under them. Were they really so eager to kill off recruits this soon? Either way, she had to pass it. Sighing, she lowered her polearm, pointing the tip down. Leaping in, she used the weapon like a third leg to steady herself, keeping it firmly pressed against the next log to stop her from losing her balance. Although she almost slipped a couple times and her sore foot came back to haunt her, she got by okay. Sighing and twirling her weapon to point upwards, she moved on, expecting yet another challenge.

...

Unless the next challenge was dealing with the other recruits, there...well, wasn't one. Holstering her weapon, she walked out of the obstacle course, seeing them already chatting. Seemed the other Matoran, whatever his name was, had just left too. Hm.
She took the opportunity to stretch her shoulders again.

Erox's remark and thinly-veiled snideness caught Zaryna at just the right moment for her to deign it with a response. She regarded him with a bemused smirk and adjusted her posture just slightly enough that her shadow grazed him.

"Darling, by your own admission you were crippled when the Dark Hunters found you. I never doubted your abilities, only wondered why the organization would have wagered such an investment on a legless Vortixx. If anything, your presence intrigues me."

Spirit idly tapped her foot, watching as a few more people made it out of the maze and began speaking. It seemed like most people had made it out okay, aside from the one with screwed-up arms.

"Wonder if anyone ever died in there," she thought aloud. "Seems pretty dangerous, wouldn't be surprised if someone did."

"I suppose that's true," Idgaddiy said, loudly enough for the female of indeterminate species to hear him.  "But, you know, we're Dark Hunters.  Keeping our share of the money gives us motivation to not die."

He and Skondh walked over to the little assembly.

"And more motivation for us to off you when you prove too obnoxious." Lukasi unintentionally snapped, towering over the other participants, glaring first at Whisper and then Idgaddiy. He loosened up his tone. "So maybe you should worry more about how easy it is to disconnect your head from your body and less about who makes it out."

He pretended to drop the matter, but actually started watching Skondh to see if he tried to jump him or something.

She silently chewed over what everyone else said, then burst out laughing. "Hah, yeah, threatening your fellow hunters isn't all that bright. No gonna get paid if you go rogue, after all." IC: Sukiru (Sting) - Obstacle Course

With a nonchalant shrug, she slipped past Nidhiki and into the maze. There were so many paths to choose from, and she couldn't be sure which ones had already been taken. Sukiru shook her head as she debated, then let her gut pick a random one to lead her through.

Ahead of her stretched a long corridor lined with wooden pillars, each of which were holding out two bladed arms and featured gruesome, poorly painted expressions. Seemed easy enough. She sauntered forward, gently pushing past the first two. She couldn't help but admire their blades, even as one nearly took her spines off. She pushed on to the next two, then the next two, noticing how her broad shoulders brushed the dummies to either side this time. It was about then that she noticed the challenge she was being pushed into. Each successive row was closer together, finalizing in a narrow lighted slit that marked the exit. She grunted with mixed disappointment and appreciation before starting to work her way back, only to have the swords swing back around toward her face, giving her a good gash across her lip. She snarled, tasting blood. So that's how they wanted to play it...

She picked up her pace, sticking low to the ground until the swords and the narrowing gap between the pillars forced her into an awkward twist. Her spines drooped and caught on the swinging blades, yanking them and causing her to growl in pain. As she whirled around to uncoil her spines from one of the pillars, another sword whirled around and caught her across the back. Red filled her vision, and she roared as she ripped all but the tips of her spines free. The pain only fueled her. Daggers slipped into her hands with practiced ease, and Sukiru barreled through the rest of the obstacles, catching blades and smashing down pillars as she went.

It was about the time she was smashing her head against the other wall that she realized this was supposed to be a puzzle for the nimble. Well, to Karz with that. She wasn't going to waste the time to slip through if her method was so much quicker, if not as clean. In fact, she was feeling pretty clever as she slipped through the exit.

That is, until she was confronted with a tall, blank wall. It was a dead end. No, no, this couldn't be it. She wasn't going back through that Karz. But with a flash of inspiration, she looked down at her daggers then raised them up, thrusting them into the wall and pulling up. One hand over another, the sharp edge cutting into the stone easily with the force of her muscles behind them. It was working great... until one of the blades snapped off in the wall. Suddenly bearing her entire weight, the other dagger soon followed. She landed hard on the ground again and stared with disbelief at the two broken hilts in her hands. "These were some of my favorite daggers!" she screeched as she threw them aside and charged up to the wall, claws bared. She grasped hard stone, her talons sank into the wall, and she started pulling herself up again faster than ever. A few moments later, she tossed herself up and over the wall...

...and toward the shallow pool on the other side.

He glanced back towards Whisper with a half-grin. "I never said it was on my to-do list." He grinned fully. "Although precipitation anticipation isn't my line of work, either. Air's a little thin up here, so I think I'll come down towards your level for a while."

He collapsed into sand suddenly, seemingly conscious of what was going on around him yet completely bland and boring.

The exit to the labyrinth was in sight, just across a huge spiked pit, too far for me to jump, too wide for me to zip line across. I pre-emptively attached a bolt to my rope, just in case. There were chains attached to the ceiling though, and handholds on the walls. Quickly planning my path, I tentatively sidestepped along a narrow ridge. Yet as I did so the ground gave way beneath me. Plummeting to my doom, I quickly grabbed a handhold with my feet dangling inches from the spikes of the pit. Aware of how close to death I had come I pulled myself up to another handhold, checking the stability of each one as I made my way back up to the top. My progress slowed as several handholds gave way, yet I reached the top. Leaping off the wall I grabbed onto one of the ceiling chains, thankfully it didn't drop me. I sung from chain to chain, making my way to the exit, yet at the last chain.

*SNAP*

I was plummeting to the floor again; quick as I could I pulled out my crossbow and fired my rope bolt at the exit. I held on the end for my life, any panic I had disappeared as the rope pulled taut and I stopped falling. Proud that it was finally over, I pulled myself up the rope to the exit.

I stepped out of the maze into the open, noticing who had completed the maze ahead of me, and one new face amongst the bunch.

Eventually managing to get out of the course, he saw that quite a few had managed to get to the end before he had, and had naturally begun arguing about things he could neither care nor comprehend.

Of course, THEY probably didn't have to deal with rocket-powered fists. Not to mention one of them looked like a Phase Dragon, which is essentially cheating. At life.

Deciding to not let it get to him (even though it already HAD) he made his way to the far left. That way there would only be one fool standing next to him.

"You did, which admittedly adds to your intrigue," Zaryna said. "But, I promise you, your mysterious past won't even trouble my sleep and the delusion is yours if you think I care."

For her part, she could tell that her words bored like auger bits into Erox's brain, making him seethe inside, but it was true—she didn't care. Whatever respect she gave Erox at the beginning had long since worn down to nothing since his petulance had diminished him, petulance fueled, apparently, by the remarks Zaryna nonchalantly tossed like stones on a lake. Her cruelty was unfocused and casual there, and while it was certainly felt on her sharp tongue, she was not using her words like the weapon they could be and yet they managed to sink deep into his armor.

Her strategic mind whirred as she wondered what would happen if she did press her words like a lever. Would they pry his skin right off? Perhaps. But Erox was still not worth her trouble. Not yet.

Okay, let's play this game of hers.

OOC: I realized that while I intended for Zaryna to leave her saber behind at the barracks for the run I never wrote that out, so she actually has her sword. Okay then!

IC:

Likewise, Zaryna's attention fluidly transitioned to other matters, though not for loss of standing. She regarded the other recruits present a bit more intently and rolled her eyes at Skrondh kicking the [sentient] sand. If this were an army, they'd be doomed. The Hunters recruited individualistic players, however, and everyone's delusions of grandeur were being played out with few exceptions. Her own sense of superiority was on full display just as well—with one notable caveat: She didn't take it out on people like Mr. Sandman or the dragonling.

She kept quiet and reserved her judgements to herself while waiting for Nidhiki to swoop in and introduce the gang to the next challenge.

IC: Votadox (Psyker) - Next to Obstacle Courses

I inspect my nails for a few seconds. They look fairly decent. Then I get bored of that, so I turn to cracking my knuckles. Releases a lot of tension, you know. Cracking knuckles. Although it's often more effective if they're other people's knuckles. After a few seconds I think I've had enough of that. I mean I can't spend all day cracking my knuckles. I move on to a few stretches. I stretch my arms above my head, let out a yawn. Ah, that's better. Releases tension, does stretching. Then I stretch my fingers, working them in and out. Yes, that's definitely an improvement. I can feel it doing me a world of good.

Eventually I work up the motivation to look at the scene just below me. I mean, it's quite funny. It gets a smile: not quite chuckle-worthy, though. I won't be guffawing any time soon. Can't say it makes me howl with laughter. Still, it's nice of them to put on the performance, even if the comedy is a bit hit-and-miss. I stand, which is quite an easy thing to do when you work up to it. Almost immediately I decide to lower myself down from this ledge and get a better look at the crowd. My hands, freshly stretched, scamper easily over the uneven rock beneath them.

I approach the group, and I let my eyes wander over them, taking a glance and possibly even a gander. Quite a gathering. A murau here, a skakdi there, a hideous mutant here, a matoran there. I saunter up to one of the sub-gatherings.

"That was quite a challenge, eh?"

I inhale.

IC: Nilauhk - Finish Line

After taking a minute to get her breath back proper, the blue and black-armoured Ga-Matoran detached the halberd tip from her polearm, switching it back to the glaive tip. Beneath her visor, hidden from view, she watched the other recruits, most of them talking to one another.

Personally, she had no need or reason to talk to any of them, so she kept quiet, sharpening the blade on her weapon and keeping to herself.

"It was, wasn't it?" Idgaddiy said, in reply to the newly-arrived Barcudo's question.

"iT WaS," Skondh agreed, staring at the cuts on his arms and hoping that he didn't get too much of his corrosive skin fluid in any of them.

Idgaddiy briefly eyed the Barcudo- this one could prove to be a valuable ally, given his hypnotic gaze and, if his jump from the wall gave indication, his climbing skill.  But there would be time for ally- and enemy-making after the morning's exercises.

Zaryna listened to the conversation going on a scant few paces away, gauging the traits of her fellow recruits like a scientist observing her experiments. While they squabbled over semantics and petty grievances like buffoons at carnival, Zaryna didn't quite discredit them. In fact, she didn't disdain even Erox; he was not a target of her scorn, but rather she thought of him as just another plebeian who squirmed in her presence. All of the recruits had to have some individual value, but that could easily have inflated their ego.

Everyone, she reckoned, thought of themselves as the tough . No harm in that. Some of them may have even been clever enough to poke at their peers and see what irked them. Zaryna could appreciate that, if it were the case. Years of leadership and warfare taught her the virtue of overestimating one's opponents. Ever since the matoran and toa overthrew her she made certain not to miscalculate what even little people were capable of.

I look on in what may be described as a mild flavour of amusement. Clearly none of these recruits realise that I've just walked down from the ledge, opting to assume that I've shared in their trials. Quite gullible, it seems. And not very intelligent: an impression I derive from their argument. A lot can be told by a person's argument, or so it's said. And these beings' arguments are telling me things in grunts.

After a few moments I freely admit to boredom. Yet more inanity appears even without me asking for it. The conversation reminds me of one of those annoying clockworks they make on Nynrah: you wind it up once and it's making an irritating ding for the next half an hour. Eventually I say "I think you do need heat for a blister though," just to add some tension to the situation.

IC (Nidhiki): The Toa of air emerged from the maze and stalked towards the group of chatting recruits, dragging a rather sorry-looking blue steltian behind him.

"Right everyone, sorry for the delay" he growled, "But Smasher here had the bright idea to punch his way through the electric spider nest, rather than going around it like any sane person would, and needed rescuing." He shoved the moronic trainee towards the group, and Krekka obligingly stumbled over, before sitting down and looking dumbly back at Nidhiki.

"Anyway, congratulations to the rest of you on making it through. Between what we've seen here and the reports we've heard on how you got recruited, we should have enough information to start polishing your strengths and mitigating your weaknesses. Before we do though, there's one more test for you, and for that, we'll be heading over to the combat arena. Bruiser, Sting - you stop by the storehouse on your way. Screamer will see to your wounds."

IC: Nilauhk

Nilauhk listened to Nidhiki, before finally her head turned in Kohu's direction, the first sign she made to signify her registering him having said something.
"The codename they gave me is Valkyrie." she shifted her weight off her polearm, holstering it once more.
"I am here because I have nowhere else to go with my life."

--IC: Idgaddiy and Skondh--

"Come on, Skondh.  Let's get you patched up," said Idgaddiy, guiding his now whimpering bodyguard over to the storehouse.

They pushed open the door slowly.  There was a musty smell in the storehouse; paired with the dim lighting, it gave the place a foreboding, slightly scary atmosphere.  Idgaddiy wasn't scared- foreboding, slightly scary places were nothing to him- but Skondh started whimpering louder.  He was barely more than a child, after all, and was still susceptible to fear.

"Hello?" Idgaddiy called out into the gloom of the storehouse.  "Is there anyone in here that answers to Screamer?"

"aND CaN He FiX MY aRMS?" Skondh added.
