IC: Galrax "Spirit"

Spirit gave Nidihki a thumbs up. "I'll be there in a jiffy," she said. Five seconds later, she abruptly vanished from view, her body becoming totally incorporeal. She hovered there for a moment, before speeding off towards the combat arena.

She had no real reason to linger behind and wait for everyone to set off, after all.

IC:

Zaryna began heading towards the arena. If they were being sent to the arena there was a high probability the next task would be fighting—either each other or full Dark Hunter members.

Either way, she looked forward to it.

IC (Screamer): Skondh was answered by a loud, grating screech, coming from somewhere in the back. It sounded again, harsh and shrieking, before a loud buzzing rose up to cover it. The creature that emerged from the dark doorway could only have been one of the Dark Hunter's twisted mutants, and one could hardly guess what, or who it had started out as.

Screamer had the body of a great blue-grey mantis, with huge, staring compound eyes, four iridescent wings like a dragonfly, and dozens of angular, pointed legs like a centipede. The creature buzzed around the centre of the room, hovering back and forth as it took in the pair with apparent displeasure, before zipping forward to land on Skondh's shoulder.

It stared him in the face with insectoid eyes while its back legs went to work on his upper arm, kneading and needling at the raw flesh. Each touch of its legs flared for a moment, stinging like the bites of a fireflyer, before fading again. Within a matter of second, the creature withdrew, and Skondh's gashes had been reduced to a network of crusty scabs. The pain subsided too, remembered only in a lingering itch.

Not waiting for a response, Screamer crawled around the back of the Vemosai's neck to rest on his other arm and repeat the process. As she worked she tapped Skonhd's face with one mantis like claw and hissed at him. "Go. Away. And don't. Do it. Again."

So saying, the healer and storemaster buzzed off without a second glance, returning to her work somewhere beyond the musty doorframe.

"Aw, this is gonna suck," she muttered to herself. Given the way this morning had been going, she was pretty certain she knew what Nidhiki had in mind for them. She sighed, and set off towards the combat arena.

IC Lukasi - Metronome

He was silently hoping and also dreading winding up with Minion. He had heard some minor stories about him, and that he was extremely big. He would be nice to sock in the jaw.

Although it was more likely they were fighting each other. He trudged along, hoping they were not exactly ready for a fight with a dissolving titan. Because if not, this would be very easy.

IC: Waveahk "Commander" (Odina, Project Protodermis Compound, Obstacle Course)

Succumbing to the cynical premonition that he would end up fighting someone with particularly powerful... powers, he began trudging along to the arena, as per Nidhiki's instructions, behind the more "eager" trainees.

Valkyries response felt familiar. I knew why.

"Same reason as me ... "

I made my slow walk to the arena, so the Matoran could keep pace if she wanted to.

"I assume you feel this is the only place you can belong now?"

As she walked, she shook her head.
"No. I'm sure there are plenty of places I could be. Only a couple I know by name."  she briefly examined her surroundings.
"None worth my time, though."

--IC: Idgaddiy and Skondh--

Skondh looked at the scabs that had once been the cuts on his arms.  Already, his skin fluid covered most of them, leaving almost no trace of where he had been cut by the barbed wire.

"THaT SCaRY MaNTiS LaDY FiXeD MY aRMS," he said, flexing them.  "THeY FeeL aLL RiGHT.  KiNDa iTCHY, BuT iT'LL Do."

"Now, you heard what she said, Skondh," Idgaddiy said.  "Don't do things to get cut up again."

"i WoN'T," said Skondh.  "i DoN'T WaNNa HaVe To CoMe BaCK HeRe aGaiN; SHe WaS a BiT Too SCaRY FoR Me."  He gave off a small shudder.

Idgaddiy shook his head.  Skondh had his strengths, but bravery was not one of them.  Hopefully the Dark Hunters would mold the fear out of him.  "Come on," he said, "let's get to the combat arena."

"OK," said Skondh, and followed his boss out of the storehouse and to the combat arena.

I figured I knew enough to figure Valkyrie out from those answers, or maybe I just saw too much of myself in her? Might just be getting soft in my age. Speaking of age I was surprised at the number of old warriors in this group of 'trainees'.

IC (Shadowboxer): "Oh no, you do not want to do that" Krahua added emphatically, hurrying to catch up with the blue Murau. "I used to work for one of those Karzhani-spawn, and believe me, getting captured by Dark Hunters was the best thing that happened to me in millennia."

As the recruits came over a slight rise, they would get a good look down at the combat arena. It was a large area, walled in on all sides, with sand and dust covering over a packed earth floor. A few features stood out immediately.

At the south end were the crumbling ruins of what might once have been a stone stockade, or perhaps a tower. The weathered stones had been worn down by a thousand blasts and beaten with a thousand weapons, but several walls still stood, providing combatants with a chance at finding cover or a hiding spot.

At the other end of the arena, by contrast, held buildings still in their infancy. The shells were surrounded by scaffolding, leading up to a number of platforms high in the air. Underneath, a number of sturdy wooden poles had been driven into the ground and used to string up huge canvas sheets between them, creating a kind of maze where fighters could dodge between them.

The centre of the arena held a round pool of brackish water. It sunk down deep, before a large sculpted fountain rose high out of the centre.

IC (Nidhiki): When everyone seemed to have gathered before the arena's gate, Nidhiki called them together and introduced the next exercise.

"As you may have already guessed, we'll be looking at your combat skills. You'll be pairing off for training bouts - note that I said training bouts, not fights. Your objective is to force your opponent to concede, or else to knock them unconscious. You will not seek to unduly injure, maim or kill your opponents. You will stay within the arena until I tell you to come out, and you will interact only with your assigned opponent, and not interfere in any other matches.

So, with all of that laid out, let's pair you off...  Bug-Eye, you go with Exile. Spirit, you get Whisper. Bruiser, Shadowboxer, off you go. Commander, you fight Valkyrie, and try not to step on her while you do. Hijack and Mirror, some stepping should be acceptable. Huntsman, you get ghost, if you can find him. Sting versus Reaver, that leaves... Metronome against Psyker, and Specialist. The odd one out. You get the dubious distinction of going toe-to-toe with a real Dark Hunter. Mimic, you're up.

OOC: Click, I realise that Sting hasn't finished the obstacle course and been healed yet, but for the sake of keeping things moving, we can just assume those things happened and go on with the fight.

IC: Votadox (Psyker) - Combat Arena

I finally have reason to thank the Great Spirit: that reason being the premature death of the conversation. After the announcement I decide to spend a few seconds mentally preparing myself. For the exertion of moving, that is. Once I've done that, I decide to perform the aforementioned action. Later still, some important people have said some important things. Because of these things it looks as if I'll be engaging in a conflict, perhaps a punch-up, and maybe even a melee with an individual known as Metronome. I do hope he doesn't tick too loudly. That could get quite irksome.

Now I'd think This'll be too easy! but if I'm not saying it out loud, what's the point? So instead I turn to Nidhiki and say "Ah." Then barely a moment later I say "Which one is Metronome?" I say this as I can't see one. So I'm left to assume it's disguised.

"This'll be too easy!"

Let's have an aside for a moment. A brief instance of sincerity in my internal monologue. What I'm here to tell you is that I'm not scared, not scared of a big clumsy brute like this or a fast dodger like myself. I've seen too much, done to much, to be scared. I have fear, obviously. But I'm never scared. I can tell when I have fear: I know how to use it. But I never let it use me.

Aside over.

I nod to the instructor in thanks. Then I make my way over to my opponent. And yes, the word 'saunter' could well be used again here. I'm also wearing my best grin, the one I only take out on special occasions. Then I decide that this isn't special enough to be a special occasion. So I wear my second-best grin instead.

"Ambivalent to meet you." I tell my opponent truthfully.

IC: Erox (Specialist) - In the Arena

I didn't know how to feel about fighting a real hunter.

There's the very real possibility that I would get my handed to me, but at the same time, the thought of fighting a seasoned hunter was interesting.

I assumed "Mimic" was the tall being next to Nidhiki.

I stepped forward, towards him.

IC: Galrax "Spirit" - Waiting outside the gate

Spirit had arrived long, long before anyone else had. She had waited until a few other people arrived to resume her physical form, and patiently waited for Nidhiki to finish his announcement. She glanced around the crowd, a clawed finger tapping her chin.

"Whisper...Whisper...Where are you?" She muttered quietly, until her eyes locked onto the other trainee. "Ah. There you are! Guess we're sparring partners, eh? This'll be fun. You did come out only a few seconds after I did...I can't wait to see what you can do," Spirit said, a smirk spreading across her face. "Can't wait at all."

--IC: Idgaddiy and Skondh--

Ah yes, Idgaddiy thought to himself.  I shall be fighting the Akula.  This should be interesting.

He stood in front of "Exile," scanning her more intently than before.  She had a definite air of royalty about her, which piqued his interest- royals usually had no business employing themselves with mercenaries.  Royals also tended to act stuck-up around the lowerclassmen.  Perhaps that was why he found such disdain for her.

Skondh found himself staring down at the Shadow Matoran designated "Shadowboxer."  He found that he almost pitied his opponent; he was much too small to stand a chance against a Vemosai.

He crouched down, wiped his hand on the stone floor to remove some of his corrosive skin fluid, and offered it to "Shadowboxer."  "uH... FiGHT WeLL, oR... SoMeTHiNG," he said.

Zaryna likewise looked at Idgaddiy (OOC: How do you pronounce that? XD) and muttered her thoughts to him. "How amusing it is that an Akula and Cunal will spar here. The Great Spirit must be laughing in his sleep!" She chuckled lightly.

IC (Shadowboxer): Krahua tried to size up his assigned opponent as the two walked slowly into the arena. It was obvious that Bruiser would be quite... bruising in a close encounter. He would have to keep his distance to avoid being crushed by those huge arms. From what Krahua had seen of him so far, he wasn't exactly the brightest mask in the storehouse either, tending to go around with the guy in the water-suit and letting the other being do the "talky-thinky" parts for him. He'd have to take advantage of that too. Other than that, he wasn't sure what abilities the other recruit would have. He'd have to deal with those on the fly.

The two walked side-by-side through the arena. To either side, other pairs branched off and found a spot to begin sparring. Krahua was happy to just keep going until they reached the north end, but as they walked, it became apparent that Bruiser was working up the nerve to say something. The pair had just come past the pond when he spit it out, apparently wishing the Matoran luck, and... wanting to shake hands?

What did he think this was, some kind of grand and lordly tournament, with sportsmanship and honour? Screw that, Krahua thought. Honour had never got him anywhere, not when he was bettering his community in the mines, and certainly not when he had the "honoured" position of being Vamprah's lab rat. Honour was for fools, he had decided. It only held you back from doing what you really wanted to. They were Dark Hunters here, where everyone had traded in their honour for gold and the chance to live another day. Bruiser could take his honour and shove it.

Smiling, Krahua took Skondh's hand in his and gave it a small shake.

"And you too, my friend" he repeated. "You too".

Still grasping the Vemosai's hand, he jabbed a punch up towards his face (not that he could reach, but he was sure the point-blank shadow bolt could), and again from his other hand right into Skondh's. The crackling, red-tinged destructive energy might give some hint to what he thought of honour.

Trusting in the surprise of his attack to keep Bruiser off-balance for a moment, Krahua took the opportunity to get out of there. He skipped backwards a few paces, towards the construction site, and drew his sword.

IC: Galrax "Spirit" - Outside the gate

Spirit nodded, and replied, "Neither am I. I'm more of a...get in and out kind of person. though I still want to see what you can do. You got out of the course just after me, and that fascinates me. You could have beaten me." Her hand fell to her side. She glanced over Whisper, taking in as many details of the fellow trainee as she could. "Once we get in there we can figure out what to do. I don't think it'd be smart for us to punch each other in the face until one of us conks out."

IC: Galrax "Spirit" - Getting ready

Spirit turned her head, and looked into the arena. Her eyes played over the features within, and eventually locked onto the newer-looking buildings. She raised a clawed finger, pointing directly to them. "There," she said.

She lowered her arm. Her gaze flicked back to Whisper, and she smirked. "We'll fight there. Come meet me, I'll be waiting for you." A scant few seconds later, and she vanished. And, shortly after she vanished, she appeared at the buildings and waved towards Whisper.

"Oh, great," she sighed, making her way across arena towards the unfinished structures where Spirit was waiting, "This should be fun." Regardless of their respective skills in combat, Spirit was clearly a lot faster, which lent her a considerable advantage.

Still, Corri was here to prove herself, and she couldn't do that by simply giving up.

She stopped before Spirit. "You ready?"

"Yeah I am. Though...hm. Maybe I should make this easier on you," Spirit said. "How's this sound: You only have to hit me once, and I'll concede. I hit you three times, and you concede. Or we could go for multiple rounds. That sounds fun." She leaned against a piece of scaffolding nonchalantly and smirked. "I want a bit of a challenge myself. Plus, a good scout needs to avoid being hit or detected. And I can't be a good scout if you can catch me easily, can I?"

IC: Sukiru (Sting) - Arena

The rest of the course had been much simpler. Her bioluminescence helped her find the drain for the pool which allowed her to pass there, and the only other thing standing in her way was a Kanoka launcher which was easy enough to deactivate with her knives.

After all of that, the healing was probably the worst part. But it was a necessary evil, as Dark Hunters don't get breaks.

She licked her sore lip as she studied this "Reaver." Another Skakdi, like her, armed with medieval weapons that she would have to stay far away from. Easy enough.

No smiles in return.

"Well." He eyed him up and down for a moment, and stepped into the ring. "Let me know when you're ready."

IC: Waveahk "Commander" (Odina, Project Protodermis Compound, Training Arena)

Still a little confused and disorientated from multiple punches to the face, it took longer than it should have done for Waveahk to locate "Valkyrie". And vice versa, it seemed.

Basic observational skills led him to see that she was abnormally taller than the average Matoran, yet did not appear mutated or augmented. For some reason, her Kanohi left her jaw exposed, so that was a glaring weakness, if he could manage to aim that low. She also wore considerably more armour than what would be expected for a Matoran, but did not seem to weigh her down or constrict her movements. Automatically assuming the enemy was stronger than it appeared as experience had taught him, he prepared to do... something, he wasn't sure quite what yet.

I watched Valkyrie leave before making my own way to the arena. It was a complicated thing, facing off against my old Lieutenant of all people. I still wasn't sure what to make of him being a dark hunter. In preparation I replaced the bolt attached to my rope with a  new one (I wouldn't be using my crossbow for it's proper use today) and began to build up my fog powers. Not unleashing them yet but keeping my powers ready for the moment the fight starts.

Spotting Acanon's golden form I headed down to the north side of the arena. It would be where I had the most advantage, and I despite our past I had no intention on making this easy for him. I also knew he felt the same.

Based off the Steltian spotting her, she assumed the tall blue entity was her opponent. Shooting him a glance to let him know she had seen him, she walked past into the arena, found an open spot, grabbed her polearm and took a braced stance, weapon ready to strike or slash.

He was a bit surprised that the Akula had somehow identified his species.  Any identifying external features would be hidden beneath his suit.  "How did you discern that I am a Cunal?" he asked.

The shadow bolts stung, especially the one to the eyes.  Skondh jerked back in surprise, blinking the effects of the bolt out of his eyes and shaking his hand to dispel the pain.  When he had recovered, he saw that "Shadowboxer" had retreated and drawn his sword.

"HeY!  THaT WaS a DiRTY MoVe!" Skondh bellowed.  He dropped to all fours and charged at the Shadow Matoran.

Zaryna led the way to a vacant section of the arena and casually spoke as she did so. "Dear, it's not that difficult considering all the evidence on full display. You're the same height and girth of one, you're wearing a suit clearly necessary for your continued existence on land, and you have a Vemosai slave. And your 'codename' certainly isn't the most effective disguise, either."

She drew her saber and swung it in a couple neat flourishes. Zaryna clearly had a handful of advantages: A longer weapon, potentially more physical prowess, no environmental suit, and rhotuka. Still, she couldn't underestimate Bug-Eye until she knew what he was actually capable of, and to that effect she continued to play with her sword while waiting for him to make his move.
