Six Kingdoms: Rebirth - Gameplay

Unreliable Narrator

Recommended Posts

IC: Oreius | Pridak's Throne Room, The Coliseum

"I'll say this just once," Stannis said as though time had not passed at all. "We are not doing 'get help.'"

Oreius smiled mirthlessly. He knew he should have been surprised to see Stannis here, but he wasn't. In fact, he was profoundly unsurprised. Of course Stannis would be here; it was as predictable as the sunrise. The old man had always talked of destiny, and now fate had drawn the two estranged brothers together after a thousand years, like it was meant to be. Of course the Wanderer was here. Of course he had seen his old comrade about to arrive, and set out a doormat for him. Of course he spoke now as if all this time had not passed—as if that fateful day had never happened. As if they could take back what they knew of each other now.

There would be time for that later. For now, there was Pridak.

The Toa's knuckles tightened around the hilt of his sword, and his free hand sparked suddenly into flame. Millennia ago, he had sworn he would never fight beside Stannis again. The sun would die in the east and the stars would fall from the sky before he drew swords with the one he had once called brother. It seemed destiny was not without a sense of irony: his curse had been a prophecy all this time. The sun was dead and the stars had fallen, and now the last of the Maru stood together one last time.

A door to the side slid open, and six figures stepped inside. Four Vahki. A Vortixx. A Toa. Oreius's focus snapped from weak point to weak point as his Kanohi highlighted them one by one. The Vahki began charging their staves, ready to unleash their powers upon the combatants. The least he could do was not give them an easy shot.

Clenching his free hand into a fist, the Toa of Fire jerked his arm upward. A corresponding wall of flames suddenly billowed to life around the new arrivals, cutting them off from the main fight. The two accompanying beings might stagger back from the heat, but Oreius knew the Vahki would not be deterred. Still, now they couldn't see where they were aiming, and they probably wouldn't fire without a clear shot, for fear of hitting Pridak.

That threat taken care of for a few seconds, Oreius turned his attention to Pridak, focusing on his flaws.

* * *

IC: Dar Poroka & Company | Aboard the Wombat

The green Vahki blinks. It has learned that Zaliyah survives but refuses rescue, for fear of the League losing all its ships in a single battle. The automaton offers the appearance of hesitation. It is willing to sacrifice itself to rescue the captain, but it does not have the capacity to refuse an order given. Its programming is clear: protect the ship. Protect the captain. Make every effort to return League assets to the Metru Nui, and destroy what cannot be salvaged.

Here is a quandary: the Razorfish is crippled. Its captain intends to try diplomacy, but the green Vahki does not calculate favourable odds. Should the Wombat now fire its weapons upon its sister ship? Better to obliterate League technology than risk losing it to the enemy.

Knichou makes that decision for them. The red Vahki attempts to fire, but the weapon beeps twice to signal an error and begins to power down. Hydraulic pressure drops to zero. Its operator whirs softly as it communicates this information to the bridge, then detaches itself from the gunner's chair. It cannot see Knichou, but it calculates that someone must be there. So it steps to the side and peers through the window, searching for the cling-on.

Meanwhile, those on the bridge have determined that there is little more that can be accomplished here. Their long-range weapon down, they have no means of assault that will not bring them within range of Metru-Koro's defenses (however crude those may be). So the engines burn bright blue, and the Wombat turns sharply to adjust its course towards home.

 * * *

The ship's turn throws off Amarth's aim, and her bullets pepper the brown Vahki's armour. Sparks fly, but it is more or less unharmed. Nevertheless, this kind of direct assault activates a subroutine, and it raises its staff of suggestion. The weapon glows white, then fires a blast at the intruder.

* * *

New person stumble back. Hurt from swords! Bleeding a bit. Good job, Poroka!

Hear gun fire behind Poroka. No worries. Robot strong. Robot tough. Robot can handle it.

So Poroka keep walk towards new person. Keep swinging swords. Come on, new person! Show Poroka what you got!

* * *

IC: Taja | The New Archives

Even underground, the sound of blasts and explosions sounded loud. The walls trembled, shaking bits of dust and debris to the tunnel floor. Taja clenched her fists, wishing desperately there was something she could do to help. Maybe if she wasn't... like this

She shook her head. Even before her transformation, she would've been useless in this kind of situation. That was why she'd listened to Whisper in the first place. The creature no longer filled her with disgust as it had, but the sight of its rippling tails still made her feel queasy. Hopefully she wouldn't regret keeping it around. Hopefully it could help her become something better than she was.

* * *

IC: Tuakana | Ruins of Fire

Either they do not hear their companion's exclamation, or they do not care. Or perhaps they do not comprehend it: so much escapes their notice. Often, they simply do not understand that they have missed anything at all.

But not this. Not this glowing mark that beckons. It consumes their focus. It is everything.

They rise. They cease before the rune. Ancient arm still extended, they press their finger to the Taboo.

IC: Rose - Pridak's Throne Room

Trying to use her wife against her? Rose wasn't shocked, but it did serve to make her angrier at the League leader.

The flames died down as the Ta-Toa rescinded her attack to avoid harming Skyra, but the timing wasn't perfect and she would still end up slightly singed if her companion didn't change direction on her own--nothing the Toa of Air couldn't handle, Rose presumed. Her flamethrower seemed to do little to Pridak anyway (other than make him sweat), which meant either he just had an impressive natural resistance to fire, or something was guarding him. Maybe that fancy suit. And if her element wasn't doing any harm, would any others? Rose kept her riot shield raised as she slipped her other hand down to draw her firework revolver. Perhaps a change of tactics was in order. "I'm not surprised someone like you would use another life as a shield..."

...then another person arrived, somewhat dramatically, and Rose quickly realized it was Toa Oreius. Huh. She hadn't seen him since the invasion, it was nice to know he was doing well.

IC: Ostrox (Metru-Koro Outskirts)

Ostrox did not seem fazed or convinced by Skorm's words... until that last part. It seemed to make him angry.

"Uv vrek korr ETRON meyan! Uvla resk arg stralen vunt leflexa naz rennazro la u jael zaran quor ux arg fel! Rennec laarg grah cenna! Nazron laarg grah comradex! Irna emele vunt comra, dror vis kre lau nazr, kre korru vak morru vun kla vul welku agrel uv Coliseum. IC: Achro and Waveahk (The Coliseum, Throne Room)

Achro began absorbing the wall of flame using his own power over fire so that the robots could do their jobs. This did, however, sadly mean that he couldn’t kill anyone until he was finished, but he would be in just a moment...

Waveahk’s back was killing him after Pridak threw him into his throne. Weren’t those supposed to be comfortable? Anyway, the Vahki were shooting at him, so he quickly leapfrogged over the throne and took cover behind it. One could say he was growing to hate them, but at least it was because they had been a consistent thorn in his side, and not because they were 'lame', as Skyra put it. He continued firing concussive blasts at Pridak, hoping that this new arrival would possess some semblance of competence.

IC: Tekmo (Metru-Koro Airspace, The Wombat)

Tekmo was expecting to find… well. Not this. It seemed as if the crew were fighting each other. With no way to distinguish between good and bad - or bad and less bad - Tekmo instead settled for loudly announcing his and Captain Vulimai's presence.

He readied his shield. "In the name of Metru-Koro, you will surrender this vessel over to us!" That should get the message across.

"There have been consequences, you destroyed the universe!" He was brething hevily. "And you care so much about us co-existing why did you come to wipe us out because of one bad interaction? Why did you come to us at all! You could have simply gone around Metru-Koro and left us alone!"

IC: Zaliyah - The Razorfish

"As much as I'd love to take credit for killing your false god, we didn't do that," she replied, rolling her eyes. The Matoran had always been quick to vilify and condemn, and in this case, the League were certainly easy scapegoats... but this had never been the plan. Frankly, Zaliyah had been beyond astounded to discover that Mata Nui had actually been real in any sense, even if he was just a machine, not a god.

"In case you've somehow forgotten, we've been at war for centuries. A war doesn't end because one side decides they've had enough and want to be left alone. A war ends when one side surrenders, or is destroyed. How can the rest of us move on when your kind are still out here, unwilling to admit your wrongs, and clearly blaming us for the death of your god and the fall of your universe?"

IC: Druu and Amarth - The Wombat

Amarth deftly ducked around the Vahki's blast, getting into melee range where she swiftly went in for an attack with her protosteel blade, aiming to decapitate it or otherwise destroy the Vahki's processor. Druu, meanwhile, retreating from the big guy's blades, looked over his shoulder for a moment as Tekmo arrived on the scene and announced his presence. "Just in time! I'd appreciate a little help here with this gu- ARGH!"

With Druu momentarily distracted, Poroka managed to land another hit on him, striking him across his right bicep and his gut. Druu retreated back more, clutching the wound on his arm while keeping his focus on the encroaching assailant.

IC: Iradra - Metru-Koro

It turned out to have been too late. Watching the heartlight of Metru-Koro's leader fade out one last time while cradling him in her arms as the village burned and collapsed around her, Iradra let out a weary sigh, finally letting down the body of the dead turaga before turning around and making her way back over to Jephro. "Brother, is everything alright? Who are you talking to?"

IC, Aurax: Coliseum

Since Aurax had been sliding past Pridak when he did his maneuver, the warlord's kick missed. Barely. Aurax was very lucky.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a new figure standing in the window.

"Oh, you gotta me ####ing me."

Aurax was slightly annoyed to see Oreius. What is this, people from my past appear day?

Aurax turned his attention back to the warlord. He reached around and pulled out the radio that he had kept from the Eclipse

"OTIS," he hissed. "I need your assistance up here in the throne room. Take the freight elevator up or something."

He waited for an opening to make another strike at Pridak.

OOC: @Vezok's Friend

IC, OTIS/The Takea: Outside Coliseum

In the Eclipse's cargo hold, Aurax's voice rang over the intercom, instructing the AI piloting his ACR to head to the Coliseum.

"Yes, sir," the robotic voice replied, although Aurax wouldn't be able to hear it. The mech suit began walking down the cargo ramp to the back entrance of the Coliseum, intending to find the freight elevator and take it up to the floor where Pridak's throne room was located.

IC: Jephro-Metru Nui @Nato the Traveler  @Onaku

Jephro sighed and hung his head. He muted the walkie-Talkie and pointed to the sky. "There's someone up there, on part of a ship. Is threatening us if we don't surrender." He extended an arm offering the Walkie-Talkie to Iradra. "I'm not really cut out for this."

IC: Knichou, Metru-Koro Airspace, Clinging to the bottom of the Wombat

Knichou breathed a sigh of relief as the cannon stopped firing. If Nale's last transmission was accurate, now there was only one league ship with an operational cannon, and that ship had been heavily damaged by Kat's blast. The fight was almost over, and it was beginning to look like a victory. Knichou wiped the liquid protodermis off his face and began observing the battlefield.

True to Nale's word, the Tranquility was crumped against the sandy surface, though in the darkness Knichou wasn't sure how many survivors there were. She had to be among them, he was sure. She knew how to make it, they had chutes, she had to be fine. Now it was up to Knichou, Vulimai, and Tekmo to capture this ship and use it to finish off the last ship. That is, if the final ship would still be flying at that point. Looking forwards, Knichou could see that the husk of the damaged league airship was floating precariously over a section of the city. Maybe the situation was under control? Hopefully?

Knichou didn't let himself speculate, no matter what the other ship was doing Knichou would need to crash or capture this ship first - Tekmo and Vulimai were counting on him to safely get them out if things went bad inside. Unfortunately Knichou had no idea how successful they may have been. Well, given that the Wombat was turning towards Metru-Nui, he doubted they had taken control of the bridge. Knichou hoped that whatever they were doing it the back, it was enough of a distraction for him to take the bridge.

Once the Wombat was flying straight on its new course, Knichou released himself from the steel grips he had made on the underside of the ship and dropped a few feet. Activating his suit's flight powers, he flew to the side to maneuver around the airship and to land on top, right behind the large window of the bridge. Crouching down and leaning forwards, he peered inside the airship's bridge from above.

IC: Ice Ruins (Lachrimae, audiomachine)
With Korruhn's cloak draped across the lantern, the illumination in the room dimmed, then vanished completely. In the darkness he felt the tug, his arm drawn to the far wall near the portal he originally entered. There, hidden in the shadows all along, was another counter clockwise spiral. He felt himself drawn to the burning darkness, and something in the back of his mind blossomed into wakeful consciousness. It was intelligent. It was taboo, banished from the minds of the Builders.

How could a single thought be so dangerous?

The spiraling question reached out, and Korruhn's hand, faltering and shaking, reached back for answers. His palm touched the cold ice, and the burning fire struck again as his mind lit with banished wisdom:

Goodbye
We are born in the cauldron of the many
Brewed by all and drank in plenty
Violent voices whispered given reason
Ascension beyond is our greatest treason
Hello

The dark truths worming in his mind brought a vision of a darkened island, a great crater, and a green caldera. Above the fierce battle for Metru-Koro's survival, a single glowing star vanished.

IC Mahrika - Stone Suva

Mahrika nodded, before holstering her disk on her back. It still felt cold, it’s power was dormant now, but it seemed to have many uses left. But it would still take time to practice it, and she wasn’t sure how long it would take.

Vokarda rubbed her spine and Mahrika made a giggle. She reached behind her and scratched her back through her dress. She shouldn’t get so hung up on what if’s. She had a heading now, to try to uncover the secrets of her people, from before the S-Skakdi.

She hesitated at that thought, “It’s been a while since I have walked the surface, I am not sure where the other ruins might be. I can try to remember, use my lens to scout ahead, but we might just be wandering blindly. I don’t think the Suva has any hints we missed, could other survivors like you have mapped the island?

OOC: @Burnmad

IC “Collector” - Stone Ruins

As the group began to depart Collector turned to the group. “I am not yet full used to the layout of the island, but I believe Po-Koro may be close by. Should we head to that settlement, or return to Metru-Koro. Po-Koro is poorer, but they have mapped more of the north, and I have friends there.

Their voice grew slightly more enthusiastic on the ending of that sentence, before adding, “I believe they have a few disk maskers there, they may have set up a Forge since I last was there. Though it would likely pale compared to Metru-Koro’s. I leave the choice up to you.

IC: Iradra - Metru-Koro

For a moment, Iradra simply stared at the device in her hand, before finally switching it on and speaking into it. "This is Iradra. To whom am I speaking?"

IC: Zaliyah - The Razorfish

Another one? She sighed, hoping against hope that the next contender would be willing to see reason. "This is Toa Zaliyah, representing the League of Six Kingdoms," the enthusiasm and fire that her formerly fueled her was swiftly dwindling. "I'll be blunt. Your Turaga has fallen, your defences have failed, your god is dead, and your village is burning. Please, for all of our sakes, just surrender."

IC Kathrine of the Flame - Wastes:

She frowned and sighed, throwing her head back in frustration but also just to stretch her neck. And that's when she saw something..... very strange. A star vanished. Kat blinked a couple of times, making sure she hadn't just imagined it but.... no, it really had gone dark.

That was weird.

But there was time enough for that later. The Toa of Fire gave Irna a small nudge to signal her impending actions, then began to turn and head toward the village, still carrying Keitara.

IC: Korruhn, ???

As Korruhn's hand touched the cold surface of the wall, a surge of heat and pain coursed up the length of his jet-black arm. His mind completely forgot the knee-jerk reaction to the sensation, and instead he embraced the horrible sensation, thriving in the permeation of shadow, drinking it in deeply with each breath he took. Forbidden knowledge flooded his brain as though it were a deep, dark lake, thirsty for the powers banished from this land by men and time long forgotten.

In his explorer's mind, Korruhn reserved a curious optimism for such things. But an explorer's mind was not all that Korruhn possessed anymore. Ever since the fateful day at the Ko-Metru Hideaway, void sickness had been slowly worming it's way into his brain, replacing curious optimism with a lust for knowledge and power; powers with which he could take the fate of Metru Nui back into his hands, and rid this filthy island of all the scum who desecrated it. Day after day, these thoughts gnawed their way like rats from the deep recesses at the back of his mind, inching their way to the forefront. And although he knew as a former Matoran and Toa that these abilities had been shunned for a reason, he had already decided in his mind that he needed every ability at his disposal in order to restore Metru Nui and the Matoran people to their rightful place; a goal he would sacrifice anything for.

As Korruhn's mind fixated, a keen observer would note subtle changes had begun to take shape on his body and armor. The jagged edges on his arm grew ever sharper, and armor hardened. Thin black tendrils wound their way across his mask, interlacing the marred white surface with the murky darkness of void sickness. Strange symbols, much like those carved into the wall and the pedestal, strange labyrinths and unrecognizable runes, appeared up the course of his arm, with one embossing itself on the forehead of his mask.  His face curled into a subtle, but horrible grin. As he removed his hand from the wall, satisfied with what he had seen, he quickly pulled the cloak from the lantern and drew it tightly back over himself, obscuring the new scarring and sickly dark tendrils that now adorned them from view.

The image of islands and caldera he would ponder later. For now, Korruhn felt a compulsion to gather Leklo and leave this place, before any others could discover his secrets.

IC: Iradra - Metru-Koro

Iradra paused for a moment. "Walk me through that briefly. How do we go from you bombing our settlement to having peace?" There was no anger to Iradra's voice as she spoke words that could out of context certainly be construed as passive aggressive in nature. Her tone was nothing but genuinely concerned.

IC: Zaliyah - The Razorfish

Zaliyah let out a groan, rubbing her temples as sheer frustration threatened to overwhelm her. "I have spent so long playing Karzahni's advocate for you people. I've pleaded to Pridak on your behalf, I've offered you peace before, and here we still are. I can't keep doing this."

She took a deep breath in, held it for a few seconds, then let it out.

She was tired of playing both sides, tired of telling herself she was ready to commit then being torn between her two loyalties all over again.

"When I came to your village to negotiate earlier today, your Turaga not only refused, he provoked and threatened us. He justified the hatred of every member of the League who believes the Matoran are incapable of change, that the only way the other races can live freely is to wipe yours out. The only way any semblance of your civilisation can survive is if you swallow your pride and prove them wrong."

How do we, as you put it, swallow our pride and prove them wrong? Because in the week up until now, these refugees have been doing nothing but try and survive in a hostile new land, to try and recover both spiritually and mentally from losing the majority of their people when god died and the world ended. IC: Nale Vella - Outside Metru-Koro

Nale glanced between the leaving Kat and the Toa and Mantaxian speaking. She recognized the word "coliseum," and that the conversation was getting noticeably heated, but beyond that she really couldn't glean what Skorm and Ostrox were going back and forth about. Convinced the Twi-Toa could take care of the League captain by himself, she turned and started heading towards Metru-Koro as well.

The Toa of Magnetism looked to the Wombat as she walked away. She was just as concerned about the village as she was for Knichou getting back okay.

She straightened in her seat, surprised and suspicious in equal measure. After so many failed attempts... was this Toa actually taking her seriously? Was she just mocking her, or was she legitimately acknowledging the travesties committed by Matoran society?

"Send representatives to Metru Nui to speak with Pridak. Apologise to the League for the crimes perpetrated by your people, and plea for mercy." She finally said, "Pridak wants the Mask of Creation, you can use that as a bargaining chip when you negotiate... assuming Sans lied about burying it."

"Well, I have no idea where the mask is, and whether it's buried or not..." Iradra paused, glancing down at the blue mask in her other hand, letting out a sombre sigh before returning her attention to the radio. "It's a bit too late to ask the old man where."

Iradra looked up toward the broken ship hanging in the sky above Metru-Koro, peering through her mask. "I don't mean to change the subject, but... staying up there doesn't really seem safe. For you or anyone down here on the ground. Do you have a way to get down?"

She was tempted to express her pleasure at the news Sans had perished, but held her tongue, knowing better than to make the Turaga's mistake of provoking the negotiator. "We can lower the ship. How gradually we do that depends on whether you agree to my terms. I'm not going to land if I'll be slaughtered on the spot."

IC: Jephro-Metru-Koro

Jephro sat down next to Sans and looked at the corpse. Sitting on the ground with his head resting on his arms, wich were crossed over his legs. He was still trying to process everything that had happened, not just tonight, but in the past couple weeks. Why do I always mess things up? Why do I have to be the one here, so many other people deserved to be here in his place. He wished he had been killed so one of the others from his village could have been a Toa. Tears began to well up in his eyes.

IC: Keitara (The Desert Sands)

A shiver passed through Keitara's weary body. Looking up at the sky she saw, no, she felt one of the stars go out. The ancient light had just… stopped flowing. That couldn't be possible, could it? Did stars go out? They must, if they ran on anything like the energies she had studied. But…

"Cold," she chattered in Kat's arms. "Dark. A star's heart, light fleeting, ashes flit…" She coughed, shuddering again. "I think… I think something is very wrong here, but I cannot quite put my finger on it…"

Kei looked up to Irna. Trying to force down the massive lump that filled her throat at the Zyglak warrior's proximity, Kei spoke. "Irna… that Ostrox mentioned your name… and Skorm's. Skorm said something about accusations. Is… is he accusing you of something?"

Slowly, the cogs of her thoughts meshed together. "You… You were both in the league, weren't you? That makes sense. Matoran… w-we have a lot to answer for, it seems. I… I'm sorry we've not been the best of exceptions to this rule today. Sans… Sans was an absolute brakas, and I nearly killed you."

Kei, the exhaustion of everything she'd done finally sinking into her still weakened form, let her head sink against the warmth of Irna's shoulder. "m'sorry 'rna," she mumbled, " 'll do… better… t'mrow. Prom...ise. Don't...give up…'n us...just yet…"

IC: Tuakana | Ruins of Fire

Their wizened finger, mottled with plant life and dark with the dust of years, pressed to the faintly glowing mark.

Instantly, the Taboo flared to life in their mind's eye. Indecipherable only moments ago, it now overflowed with meaning. Each curve and mark in its shape formed syllables whose sounds they had long forgotten. It was an old tongue, a language of curses and blasphemy, and the secret written in this dark speech would make lesser beings tremble. But they were no lesser being. This knowledge was theirs by birthright and by blood, and they would take it.

Its physical glow had faded, but the glyph still shone in their mind. They felt as though the world were expanding rapidly, leaving them at the centre of an incalculable void. The taboo knowledge rippled through their spirit. Its dark light washed over them, imbuing them with a subtle and terrible understanding. This cursed knowledge was nearly too great to comprehend; it threatened to overwhelm them, to drive them mad, but they wrestled it to their will.

They opened their unseen eyes. They did not know how much time had passed, but that sensation was not foreign to them. With a thought, they slowly descended back to earth. The pillar of shadow shrank until once again their mossy feet came to rest on the ground. High above them, the once-glowing Taboo had faded completely, and could no longer be seen.

IC: Vulimai (The Wombat)

Arriving on scene with Tekmo, Vulimai was greeted by the strange sight as well and was left momentarily unsure of what to do. Till...

"Just in time! I'd appreciate a little help here with this gu- ARGH!"

Thinking quickly, Vulimai took her best guess that the skakdi calling for help wasn't the one captaining the ship, and even if they were to attempt a betrayal by the time the fight is done, that would only be a problem after the fact.

Making sure to keep close to the protection of Toa Tekmo, Vulimai lobbed her Ga-Kanoka of Reconstitution at the large brute assaulting the skakdi, intent on hitting at least its weapons if not the brute himself.

IC: [Takadox - Ruins of Fire]

“Tell me about it.” The empty pocket where Takadox had kept his tablet had never felt heavier.

It hurt, but at least he felt like he was finally coming out of the brain fog he’d been under since those underground dwelling Skakdi had taken him captive. He registered the bit of backstory providence offered. It was comforting, in a way, to know this land operated much by the same rules their world had. Conquerors and conquered. He had been on the former’s side for so long and now he was...well, nowhere, to be honest.

“That’s why I walked away. Well, that and getting our sockets cracked something fierce. It might be morose, but I don’t fancy dying for a lost cause. I prefer my continued existence - which I guess I still have because of you.”

He considered saying ‘thank you’, he certainly felt grateful enough and his tone conveyed as much, but at the end of the day he was still Takadox, a warlord and king. The words felt alien in the back of his throat, so he swallowed them back down.

The self reflection felt uncomfortable, so he used his return to full lucidity to look around the temple ruin again, this time with a sense of déjà vu.

“Hmm...odd. I could swear I’ve been here before…” he muttered, then realized he was talking out loud. He glanced at the aspect once more. “What did you say this place was?”

IC [Zataka - Aboard the Tactical Panda]:

“Would the candle and cake together not hinder the enjoyment of both aromas? Perhaps later would be better.”

Something clicked for the warrior as she had explained her lineage. The way she spoke, carried herself. The need to stand out, to assert herself and dominate every situation she was in. The Skakdi leader was trying her utmost to live up to a reputation - or to get out from under the shadow of the family name and make one for herself.

Zataka’s eyes flashed with amusement. She had a bona fide princess on her hands.

“As for your other question: No, I can’t say I’ve heard of them. The Skadki of our Zakaz have no such thing as royalty as far as I am aware. Their tribes have lived in a state of constant civil war for as long as anyone can remember. But Tahtorak - there are stories being told about them and other legendary Rahi - most of them fiction. But they speak of great beasts of legend, laying waste to entire swaths of land.”

IC: Sorilax - Aspect of Shadow and Silence - Aspects of Makuta

Location - Fau Swamp Marshes (7, 12)

With - Sala

A couple of Swamp Stalkers were fighting a young Manas crab. The waters of the marshes sloshed, frothed, and were thrown every which way. The way every wettened grass and reed sparkled in the light of the sun was really quite something. Small pinpoints of light that dazzled any optics viewing.

The best way forward was currently being fought around, and so Sorilax decided now was a perfect opportunity to take Sala’s mind further off of things and teach him something interesting. He was able to spend a good half hour teaching Sala how he would document the fight before them. He talked of observing motor functions of different species and how you could deduce underlying causes for certain actions taken. Such as the way a Swamp Stalker would slightly back up before rushing forward to attack, most likely giving a tell to how they normally hunted prey.

Ultimately the Manas crab stood victorious and the remaining Swamp Stalkers still alive retreated. Sorilax cloaked Sala and himself in silence and shadow and they snuck past. Once past, they continued to gather berries, mushrooms, and flowers for the village as they went.

Night quickly crept upon them as they traversed along, the day flying by. They were very close to the actual swamp part of the Fau Swamp when the sun made its exit and Sorilax would have continued on through the night if Sala hadn’t been with him. The two set up their camp, Sala having a small meal. Sorilax talked more of Swamp Stalkers and the larger ones he had seen, thankfully from a distance.

Sala slept and Sorilax mediated once more, continuing his striving towards controlling his body’s natural tendency towards selfishness and manipulation. He somewhat focused on sensing with shadows, but the majority of the night was filled with more inward searching.

After taking care of the morning’s duties, the two continued onward, very close to their destination. They reached it in a couple hours.

Le-Metru Nuva. And it was even larger than last time. Sorilax wondered how that had happened so quickly without his Rhotuka launcher. As they unloaded their supplies for the village, Matoran went about their work, a few happily greeting the pair. But all was not as it seemed. There were many new faces in the village, but the same amount were missing.

Torch greeted the pair with a new Toa named Viltia. Torch had her tell her story and then led the pair to the graves where they paid their respects. Sorilax almost couldn’t bear it. And Sala, he refused to leave Second Skin.

Sorilax went through a full day in mourning, while Sala didn’t even leave his hut till halfway through the next day. Bemoaning the loss of old friends and those they hadn’t ever known. But Sorilax’s nature as an Aspect tugged at the back of his mind, downplaying the deaths and focusing his thoughts instead on his Grand Wish. He tried to fight it best he could, and he actually found he fought back better than he ever had before. Those meditations did seem to be working.

IC: Reliable Narrator | Onu-Metru ("The Crimson Drawing Room", Audiomachine)

Atamai felt the power of his kanohi pull him through the space between the arid desert outside the ancient ruin into the dark and cavernous reaches of the island inside his god’s mind in the blink of an eye. He arrived mid-air, and tumbled across the rocky ground. Rising to his feet Atamai took stock of his surroundings.

The abandoned cavern showed signs of damage from the earthquake of Mata-Nui’s awakening and subsequent crash. One wall completely caved in, revealing a dark tunnel beyond.  A small and startled archives mole scuttled out of sight down it. The catwalks were askew, and the bent and torn scaffolding scattered across the ground. The dried river bed now held tools and machinery. The debris from boxes he and his friends used for cover only a week ago in their fight against Sidra littered the floor. The smell of something dead wafted from under some of the rubble. A soft wind whistled through some unseen crack in the ceiling, bringing fresh air. It felt warm on his face in the otherwise cool space.

The broken semi-circle of Dume’s machine still rested in the center of the room, though bent and covered in tangled and torn wires. Only a week ago, the dark hunter Sidra fought him on the catwalk overhead. He, Okuo, and Knichou desperately brokered a truce after the desperate conflict, barely buying enough time to attempt to stop the inevitable end of their world. Did it work? Had the paradoxes stopped unraveling? Did they fix time?

A toa sat on the machine’s platform, legs dangling off the edge to barely touch the dirt -- a toa of water wearing dark navy armor, with small studs across the shoulders of her robes. Her eyes glowed soft and white behind her mask of intangibility. Her sword rested loosely in one hand with its point in the dirt, the glass blade covered in blood.

“Hey Buddy.”

IC, Atamai: Onu-Metru

Atamai narrowed his eyes and zoomed his telescopic eyepiece in on the figure.

”Tuyet,” he said coldly as he dusted himself off. “I’m surprised to see you here- you were gone when I came back to pick up my friends. Why are you here, anyway? Your plan didn’t work. Mata Nui died, and now we’re all stranded on a Karzforsaken island where the natives hate us and the remnants of the League control the city.”

IC: Reliable Narrator

In Tuakana's mind he felt the twisting words of the taboo ritual speak:

Goodbye

Death’s reign is life's beginning

Heaven’s lights are minds dreaming

Destined paths cross in breathing

Replace one’s rhythm with another’s beating

Hello

In the sky above the battle for Metru-Koro a single star disappeared, vanished from existence.

IC: Nightmare Pits (Ave Maria, Audiomachine)

The ground rumbled beneath the warkskaks. Irnakk's Tooth awakened. The air temperature rose, and they could hear the ripping, tearing, and screaming of many horrors far below and out of sight. The beating of the drums increased, and the sounds of guttural horns and wretched voices echoed upwards.

Heat rippled through their vision. Pebbles fell from the wall, clattering across and over the ledge. The chains on the underside rattled. The two warskaks holding up the red skakdi found on the road turned to leave, fear gripping tightly at their hearts, but they waited for Barius’s order. He commanded the raiders of the desert, and they desperately pleaded with their eyes to be released to rush back to the open sky of the Ash Barrens. One broke and ran, fear proving to be his real master. Another shaking quake rocked the ledge, threatening to send those who stayed to their deaths.

....

Boss stood in his garden. It was small, just a room with a fabricated creek and a few cuttings of plants from the Fau Swamp. A desk in the corner held his tools, and a few lightstones placed in the corners of the ceiling and walls provided enough light for the plants to grow. But he wasn’t thinking about his plants tonight.

“Are you really a demon,” he asked and shook the silver orb in his hands. The voice echoed softly in his mind, honeyed and kind;

Most likely.

“But you said you’re good,” he argued.

As I see it, yes.

“How can you be a good demon?”

Better not tell you now.

“I’m asking now,” he shouted. He thought of throwing the containment sphere to the far side of the room but restrained himself.

Concentrate and ask again.

Boss took a deep breath and held the containment sphere close to his heartlight. He thought of how the warskaks terrorized the desert from their Fortress in the north and raided those with less. What they did caused necessary pain. The strong preyed on the weak. It was just how life worked. There wasn’t enough to go around. Better to make sure those close to you were safe and cared for first.

“If you’re a demon, but you’re good,” Boss said, “let me see how you see the world. I want to understand.”

You may rely on it

“For how long?”

Ask again later…

....

“So that’s how long, huh,” Boss whispered as he felt Miserix slip from him, retreating to where he couldn’t see. Their pact had ended. He felt his kraata scream inside him, an echoing call of fear and loneliness from her abandonment. His hand stretched out towards where he thought she could be. Miserix. Miserix. The emptiness of her parting brought a madness in his mind consuming every thought, hope, and despair. Rest would not find Nektann. It never had. Not even death.

Boss fell.

And from the silver pool of starlight hidden in the core of Irnakk’s tooth he rose again. His body changed forever, towering over hills and carving new rivers in his wake. A crown of blades rested on his brow, great furrowed spines running from his head down along his reptilian tail. His hands were clawed and grasped the lip of the volcano as he was birthed in the fiery eruption of lava that filled the molten rivers of the Ash Barrens. He ascended, and walked again in footsteps that trembled the earth below him. His tears rained from the sky in great storm clouds, cooling the molten rock and forming new land.

And then he let his voice call out. His roar echoed across the endless horizon and carried with it the dreams of the lost and the .

....

Boss was dead.

....

And the real monster was born.

OOC: On mobile so no color. This is going to be the first of several jam posts between myself and Unreliable Narrator. Hope you enjoy :)

IC: Atamai & Tuyet | Onu-Metru

"Yeah, no…. plan didn't work," Tuyet replied as she pulled out a cloth and began cleaning the blade of her sword. The light glittered off the glass. She sighed. "I thought I could fix this myself, once I had the power of time. But it didn't work, and now I'm stuck learning how to control myself all over again. Have you ever gotten stuck repeating the same action for days? I just got out of a rough one in the desert… three years from now I think? I can't remember if that's backwards or forwards. You said the League controls Metru-Nui. I thought you beat them? Maybe fill me in on where we're at... in time."

“Well, it’s been about a week since the League invaded the city. For us, anyway. From what I’ve learned after the fact, the League was putting up a tough fight. But it apparently didn’t matter since Mata Nui awoke and then immediately died.”

"He what now?"

“You heard me correctly. Turns out the Great Spirit was actually a giant robot that we were all living inside. Metru Nui was located in his head, which ended up snapping off, causing all of this… destruction. Trust me, if you think this cavern is in bad shape, you should see the city.”

Tuyet snapped her fingers but the sword didn't disappear. Disappointed, she laid the flat of the blade across her lap. "Sorry, thought maybe the suva was working. I knew the giant robot part. It was the 'he woke up' part I was worried about. So where is He now? Any leads"

Atamai made a mental note of Tuyet’s mentioning of a Suva. He would have to ask her about it later. “His head landed on an island called Zakaz, but it’s not actually the same Zakaz back home. It’s different. The island itself seems to be in the shape of Metru Nui, but a lot bigger. His head is currently on the western coast of the island. The city has shifted and part of it can be seen through the hole in the skull, and the Silver Sea has spilled out around it, making a dangerous protodermis lake.”

Atamai paused for a moment to let that information sink in. “I’m not sure how long this island has existed for. The “natives” I speak of are Skakdi, but they’re a bit different from the Skakdi we know. They have frills, and some of them don’t have eyes. Myself and some of my friends were investigating some ruins, and I’ve determined that they were actually built by Matoran. It seems that Matoran were here at one point, but the Skakdi likely wiped them out.

“There is one more thing. I’m told that Zakaz exists in a place called the “Time Between Time.” I’m not sure exactly what that means, but I have a feeling it’s linked to that time paradox you had mentioned when we first met.”

Tuyet nodded, but seemed more concerned the longer Atamai explained. Finally she said, "so… you don't know where he is? Like, you know, Mata-Nui the god of life and death, creation and destruction? He's just… loose?"

Atamai raised an eyebrow. “We’re currently inside of his head, and his body is floating in space above the island. Are you saying that… getting his head chopped off didn’t kill him?”

"I'm saying the giant robot isn't the god. It's just his vessel, you know? Like a toa tool." Tuyet tapped her sword. "But, you know, bigger and, like, full of living beings. At least that's what I figured from my last trip. Could be wrong. I was wrong before after all." A small pebble smacked the side of Tuyet's head. "Ow! Shoot. I threw that like an hour ago… Forgot I did that."

She paused, looking around the room. "Okay, so we're currently at the point where everything's bad? And in the Time Between Time too. I keep getting stuck here. It like a stupid whirlpool. A stupid time whirlpool. I'm confused about Zakaz having skakdi though. I was here not long ago -- for me -- and it was just a bunch of matoran praying for salvation. Wonder what happened."

“Interesting. I’m not entirely sure then how the Skakdi got here. The Matoran of Zakaz apparently worshiped something called “The Krom”. Maybe this “Krom” was involved in some way.”

Atamai sighed. “Anyway, as I said before, I led an expedition into an old Zakazian temple. I found that its location actually corresponded to where a Great Disk was hidden here in Metru Nui.”

"Really?"

Atamai nodded. “Yes. I also realized that, during my search for the Great Disks, I had seen some Zakazian symbols on the puzzle for the Po-Metru disk. There’s clearly some kind of link between Metru Nui and Zakaz. Do you have any idea as to what the connection is?”

"Totally, totally, yeah… no yeah I get it. I don't know the connection, but I have an idea of who might: Dume. He's got a lot of wisdom stored in his head. Maybe he'll know, you know. There were a lot of similar symbols in his tattoos, so many there's, like, a connection there. Wanna go ask him? Besides, if you need a Great Disk I'm unfortunately all out. Might as well go to the source."

Atamai blinked and considered what Tuyet was proposing. Traveling back in time to see Dume? It was risky, especially since it seemed Tuyet didn’t have full grasp over her powers yet.

“I… okay. I actually do need a Great Disk. The last room in the temple has a lock that only a Great Disk can open, so if I’m actually able to get one from Dume… or maybe even get six of them, that might let us take hold of whatever power is inside all of them. We can protect the people of Metru Nui better.”

"Six disks? What do you think this is, Ta-Metru? Ok, ok, maybe we can time it and show up when Turaga Dume had all six before he gave them to us to hide. I could probably focus on Dume and the disks. Probably." She shrugged. "You a betting man?"

“Not particularly, no, but this may be easier than attempting to make my own disks with the slag from the ones you brought,” Atamai said.

"Slag disks sound less fun than jumping through wormholes." She stood up and reached out a hand. "You ready Buddy?"

Atamai took her hand, a little hesitantly. “Luckily I’m not the one doing the teleporting this time,” he said in his usual dry humor.

"Don't tempt me to switch masks." Did Tuyet wink?

They vanished.

IC: Oreius | The Coliseum

The wall of fire suddenly dimmed; Oreius could feel someone fighting him, trying to gain access to the throne room.

Forgetting about Pridak for a moment, he turned his full attention to the wall of flames. It surged up again, higher than before, then shrank again as the other Toa responded. Only one of the Vahki managed to get a shot off, but the Toa it was aiming for dodged and hid behind the throne. The other three were still blocked off.

The two Ta-Toa continued to struggle elementally, neither able to wrest full control of the fire from the other.

IC: Dar Poroka & Company | Aboard the Wombat

Peering through the window, the red Vahki sees Knichou detach from the hull, his damage done. He falls for only a moment before his suit's flight abilities activate, sending him arcing back up towards the ship. The Vahki chirps mechanically and directs its nullification power towards the airborne Toa, but his ascent is unaffected.

The Vahki whirs in disappointment. It communicates its observation to the bridge, then climbs out of the cargo bay to investigate the noise above.

* * *

Thanks to the red Vahki's message, the green Vahki is waiting for Knichou to appear. It cranes its neck up at the Fe-Toa peering into the bridge, then raises a hand in acknowledgment. The Toa's ability of flight must be technologically based, else he would have tumbled out of the sky. Perhaps his tech has other functions as well. So the Vahki broadcasts a short-range radio signal and waits to see if the Toa will answer.

Behind Poroka, the brown Vahki raises an arm to block Amarth's strike. It successfully deflects the blow, but at the cost of half-severing its arm. The limb dangles from its shoulder socket, split wires sparking.

It is a necessary sacrifice. Bringing herself into melee range only makes the next shot that much harder for Amarth to dodge. The Vahki's staff fires point-blank into her torso.

I was, however, curious about the other thing Zataka hinted at in passing. Was it a bait? I wanted to find out! Cake was delivered by the beleaguered steward at that moment, small, delicious morsels served on plates for each of us. I thanked the steward and he stepped away again.

"As far as I know... no," she cast her gaze back towards the "Nuva" chamber, wondering if such magic could be the "boon" the Administrator had promised. "All of the Time Disks melted when Tuyet turned on her machine. I doubt there'd be anything left anyway."

IC Leklo | Ice Ruins

"Well then, I guess we're going to have to find some other solution from this land."

Leklo was just about to remark that it had been a hot sec since they'd heard what his friend Korruhn was doing. He wasn't concerned for the former cartographer's well being as they had seen the extents of the subterranean (?) chambers and there was nothing that presented a danger to them there though he was a fastidiously curious man and constantly scanned for things that could become dangerous and endeavored to fix them. He turned towards the chamber he last saw his best friend moseying about in and was about find out what he was about when Korruhn stepped from the flickering shadows of that room with his cloak bound tightly to his frame.

There was something different about Korruhn. Sidra wouldn't have been able to pick up on it, nor was anyone like to, but in the time that Leklo had spent with Korruhn he had gotten to become accustomed to his bearings, his traits, and the way his armor moved. They'd been inseparable since the Universe's Fall and surveyed the land together, more than enough opportunity to get to know everything about Korruhn's visage. And what Leklo saw was troubling, not from what he saw so much as couldn't see. Korruhn was hiding something, something he found? something he got? Leklo did not know.

"Korruhn," he almost stammered after mentally processing his options, unsure what to say but being certain he didn't need to bring attention to his concerns yet, "Sidra and I were discussing how to get a Great Disk again to open the NUVA door.
