IC: [Ayiwah - Chiisai Ryuu]

It was hard to tell for the bystanders and others viewing the scene, even fellow Dasaka, but Tazera noticed the commodore relax, the tension disappearing from her posture. Well, almost.

There was one immediate concern that took priority for Ayiwah, before taking a closer look at the intruder or acknowledging the Mentis’ success.

.:What’s Dastana Inzu’s status?:.

It was faster to inquire via ideatalk. It also had the benefit of not audibly broadcasting her concerns, just in case the rogue Toa was not alone after all or if there were unfriendly ears listening in.

And there it is.

She had expected the question would come, just not quite so soon or delivered in that tone.

“I don’t have a good answer.” she replied plainly. And truthfully.

Leah pulled up one leg, resting her arms and chin on her knee. But, her eyes met Krayn’s unwaveringly.

“How? I don’t know how it happened - not in detail. Not yet. Some dark magic, mechanism or trick method…I was about to look into that before…” - she gestured at herself and the cot she was sitting on - “...all this.”

She smiled, but in that uncomfortable, tight-lipped way that made it clear there really wasn’t anything to smile about.

“But that’s not the how you are interested in. You want to know how it is possible he even had a chance to claw his way back from nonexistence in the first place after the prophesied heroes sent him there.”

She recalled the similar conversation she'd had with Talli and Kimala just that morning. She hadn't beaten around the bush with them. She wasn't about to start now.

“If you’re looking for a one word root cause that allowed for his return…I suppose carelessness works. Or negligence. Depending on how charitable your reading of the situation is.”

IC:

"I don't think charity comes into it." The De-Toa said mildly, taking his hand away from the dial on the device over his hear. Its dampening turned down he could— and did— listen to every change in the Maru's inflection. Not to detect a lie, though in the most cynical part of his mind he considered that as well. It was instinct, more than anything. The way she said something would mean almost as much as what she said and that information was valuable. In the same steady, patient tone he continued; "And there will be enough recriminations to come, I think. Fair or not."

"We shouldn't have expected his absence to be permanent. Not in hindsight. But on the basis of the information we had..." Krayn didn't finish the sentence, but that didn't hinder its message; it had been here in Ga-Koro he had heard Leah say that the Makuta was gone himself. Not a lie, perhaps, but an omission. An omission in the right place, with the right circumstances, to lead the island to a conclusion they had never corrected. "We're out of time to prepare."

"You don't know the how. But you know why it was possible." He tilted his head, and asked tonelessly; "What really happened in Mangaia?"

The ship really was enormous.  As she moved across the deck, bag in hand, she felt like it might swallow her.   She speed up her walk, advancing forward towards the main mast.  She had to keep moving, or she would be swept away.  One thing anchored her.

This ship must have a galley fit for an akiri.

~~~
A few hours later, the largely Po-koronan crew found themselves in possession of many mysterious packages, neatly wrapped in ti leaves.  Curiosity soon unveiled the cargo—spiced mango-seaweed salad and triangles of vinegared rice around marinated poké.   The galley was as well-supplied as Talli had thought, though they clearly didn’t know what to do with the bounty of provisions Ga-koro had provided them with.  While the fish and fruit was still fresh, Talli was going to make sure they understood what they were missing.   (And frankly, she thought as she devoured her own meal next to the exhausted crewmates she had roped into tonight’s dinner, what she was missing.   This was a once a year meal back in the North Docks.)
Back on the upper deck of the ship, a young po-matoran approached the mast, hefting one of the precious packages as he stared up at the terrified lesterin. “Sir, do you want dinner?”
IC Kanohi - Ga-Wahi - Ga-Koro
The cross-wired vigilante nodded, they needed a way to secure the Lesterin. Though … ideally not something too rough. It was hard to describe, but as he looked at this stranger overpowered by a Matoran, blade at his throat and mobbed by a small army, it felt … familiar. Not precisely and not like how a vision would feel, but the feeling of being overwhelmed and helpless.
Kanohi’s heartlight flickered in memory of that cave in Ko-Wahi, that deluded Matoran binding and torturing him, and that terrible flame that smothered his throat with ash. He … Kanohi could not recall having someone at his mercy before, but these memories haunted him. As horrible as what the Lesterin had done to Rahi, in this moment, he wanted to be merciful.
He turned away from the Lesterin, only for his optics to zero in on his own Volo Lutu Launcher. The one he had bound to his arm using bandages he bought in Le-Koro. Bandages, meant to be attached to a chassis. Kanohi reached underneath one of his wooden masks and produced some of his spare bandages, offering them to Eita.
He was surprised at the offer of a care package from one of his hostage takers. Even if more food risked provoking seasickness on rougher seas, the hunger was undeniable.
IC, Eita: Ga-Koro
Eita glanced down at the bandages Kanohi was offering, nodding as he took them, understanding that the Matoran was giving them as a response to his query about tying the Lesterin up. Eita walked to behind the Lesterin and grabbed his arms. The Lesterin recoiled a bit, but relaxed as the realization that he was well and truly caught set in. Eita tied the bandages around the Lesterin's wrists, binding them together behind the being's back.
***
It wasn't long until the Stone Ape had been dealt with, and some Marines had shown up to investigate the warehouse and take statements. Eita and the others were standing off to the side under the setting sun. The Dashi was holding the small potted plant in his hands.
His eyes glanced around before settling on Ranok and Sigrus, since those Matoran seemed to have intimate knowledge of the cactus.
"So I guess I just slice up its fruit and eat it, then?"
IC: Kimala and Lapu
Kimala placed her hands on her hips, looking down at the Matoran group she had agreed to help. "Well. That sure took much less time than I expected! When you said 'cactus', I was sure we were off to Po-Wahi!" she said jovially. Oof, her knees ached... She hadn't run like that since... the hospital.
Lapu remained in the greenhouse for a while, examining the plants, and making sure the last of the parasitic plant was gone. Not absorbed, but shriveled into ash by his power. Power like this- to dominate the body of the host- was terrifying. Reminiscent of infected masks. Maybe that was why he hated it so much. He took his mind off the unpleasantness a moment by simulating cactus spikes on his wood-covered arms. Flimsy things, but painful to the touch. Maybe he could find a way to modify them in the future, because standard thorns seemed more effective to him.
IC: [Leah - Cael’s house]
You don't know the how.
One of Leah’s eyebrows to raise a fraction. Do you?
A beat. She took a breath, then began:
“You’ve all heard the stories. You already know most of what happened. We fought our way into Mangaia, faced Makuta, and won.”
She let her gaze drift, from Krayn to the others and back.
“And yes, we considered if this was just a deception of his, so we checked for any trace upon returning to secure the lair - for all the good that did. But Makuta was gone. Not…killed - not in the way we usually understand it. The best way I can describe it is…banished from existence. Erased. Totally and utterly.”
“At the time I believed that to be the same as if he’d been destroyed. I did not find out differently until much later.”
She knew what the next question most likely would be and braced herself for it. Because answering it would mean sharing knowledge that she believed no-one - not even a Maru - should have. And it would mean throwing one of her brethren to the proverbial kavinika.
IC: [Ayiwah - Chiisai Ryuu]
Internally, the commodore heaved a sigh of relief. Good. All her crew were accounted for and the ship was safe. Externally, she acknowledged Dakte and Tazera with a slow nod. Ayiwah was not one for public vocal praise, especially the Lieutenant recognized the gesture as the familiar one of approval she had witnessed countless times before - usually while being the recipient of said silent approval.
Finally, the commodore’s attention shifted to the unconscious rogue Toa. She realized she hadn’t seen too many of Mata Nui’s inhabitants without their masks on. Even without it, the point where the Toa had taken the bump on his head was notable. She studied him for several long seconds, her jaw firmly set, as she took a few slow, pacing steps from one side to the other.
Then, with curiosity about the interloper apparently satisfied, her eyes met those of the aspiring battlemaster.
“Ageru Dakte, please escort the intruder off the Ryuu and transfer him into the custody of the Ga-Koro Marines.”
The lack of tone in her instruction spoke volumes about what she thought of the intruder: Nothing at all.
IC: [Rhow - Ga-Koro harbor]
The Skakdi grimaced slightly at Yukie. She still wasn’t entirely keen on having her mind probed, but her need for answers was stronger. Then, she nodded.
“Sure - “ she said, then paused for a fraction of a second, thinking quickly, before adding: “Long as you don’t plan to scramble my brains and leave me drooling in a back alley.”
IC: Azusai - Ga-Koro
She glanced back gratefully to Karoru, both for her steadying grip and her encouraging words. Maybe... she really could do this. She had really gained a taste for nautical navigation over the last few weeks, and the idea that she could do something meaningful with it... while also not starving on a tiny raft, thrilled her. "Thank you, captain. I... w-will try not to disappoint."
Her stomach gave an undignified rumble, and Azusai flinched and looked at the ground shyly. As the captain left and the... Toa began to rouse, it was all she could think about. She tried to wait patiently for business to conclude, but Karoru's promise rang in her ears still. Finally, she gave a little tug on Karoru's hand beside her. "Um... c-could we get something to eat... before we head out? You... could see if Miss Skyra would be interested... I'd love to hear more about her."
“Well, this isn’t exactly an orange, I wouldn’t recommend taking more than a slice.” Ranok eyebrows arced—if he were a little more tense his expression could have been taken for disapproval.   As it was, he seemed to find the idea of chowing down on a cactus like a hand fruit somewhat amusing.
“Cactus is meant to be enjoyed slowly—most of the Po-koro growers I know make a tea with honey.  It doesn’t exactly taste…pleasant.”  He wrinkled his nose.  “You might need the strength of the raw fruit, but I must insist we make somewhat of an event of this.  I certainly wouldn’t take a mind-altering substance in a warehouse full of previously homicidal plants.”
He looked at the rest of the group.  “I don’t suppose any of us actually have a house here?”
Yukie shook his head.  “It doesn’t work like that.  Even if I wanted to do what you’re describing, I couldn’t.”  He locked eyes with the Skakdi, hoping that his gaze could convey the things that metaphor could not.  Row had reminded him that as much as he thought himself connected to the people that he supervised, he was woefully lacking in language to speak to them.
“I understand your hesitance.   Your mind is the core of your being—it is the most private of places, and allowing someone inside is always uncomfortable.  But for that reason, your mind is stronger than you think.  It is hard to heal, but it is also hard to break.  Even if you don’t have experience with someone entering your mind, you know how to defend yourself.   The mind isn’t a door that I can simply do what I wish in once you flip the latch and let me in.  That is why I need your help.”
He glanced back. “Besides, I have no doubt Commador Ayiwah and Master Long would scramble my brains in a more direct way should I try any, uh, ‘funny business’.”
The young sailor sighed.   He was really hoping the guy clinging to the mast would be too seasick to want dinner.   But now he had been directed, and the quartermaster would be on his case if he took the lesterin’s food. Alas.
Carefully but confidently he picked is his way up the rigging, dropping the package unceremoniously in the crow’s nest. “Enjoy your dinner, sir.”
Sir?
The Lesterin nodded in a faux appreciation, too bewildered by everything going on to question it. Social norms flowed through in his conscious self's stead.
He looked at the meal for some time, cradling the package so it wouldn't fall as the sways of the ship snaked up towards its artificial peak. The cubed chunks of Ruki was lacking its normal chargrilled stripes. Bizarre, but desperate times called for desperate measures. With reluctance, he was able to eat.
Nichou, who had been quiet throughout most of this process as the excitement wore off and banality felt more intense than ever, remained quiet as he shook his head. In fact, he wasn't sure why he shook his head - Ranok already knew the answer. Maybe the Onu-Matoran just wanted to feel like he was contributing something, anything, even if it was, in fact, nothing. This really was just like the old days.
IC:
The skills were rusty from disuse but they came back quickly. Application cleared away the grit with growing momentum as he listened attentively, eyes fixed on the near distance over the Maru's shoulder and slightly unfocused. He wasn't using them. Many investigators would have been focused on the face, posture, the minute tension and release of the muscles that might speak to stress. All had their place, and he had used them before. But those same tells could be found in the voice, in subtle inflections and intonations that laid bare the truth of one's thoughts.
The content of course was just as important and he stayed quiet while he considered. The concept of nonexistence, of banishment from this realm, was difficult to grasp. It was too alien. It was a step beyond death, an erasure of everything that had been. But it wasn't as hard to conceive of as it would have been before. A year ago he hadn't hung between life and death. Hadn't felt how easy it would be to lapse into that void and cease. What had been done to Makuta was still bigger, but it wasn't totally alien. And with his head firmly wrapped around at least the abstract of what had happened the questions began to form.
"I can see where that would have seemed like the same thing." Krayn said slowly, tapping a finger slowly. "I'm obviously not familiar with how it was done. But clearly the process was reversible somehow. Of the six of you, did whoever banished him know it could be undone? Let me rephrase. Wherever Makuta was sent, could he take things from the same place?"
The who was important, too. And he would get around to asking that. But that was a hard question to answer. No matter how justified it would be betraying a trust. Asked too soon the subject might refuse. No, that wasn't quite fair; not the subject. This wasn't an interrogation. At the most formal it was an interview, but more simply it was just... A conference between old colleagues. The rapport was there. The trust, as far as it went, was too. So he bit the bullet and took a guess.
"Did Stannis know?"
Did Stannis know?
Her thoughts returned to the keeping place, that other realm beyond reality - but which held things that could very well become real. She found herself back in the ethereal secluded cave by the sea, calm waves lapping against its rocks under an eternal warm sun. For a brief flash, she wished she really was back there. Maybe one day she’d try to visit - if it even existed still, now that it’s purpose had been fulfilled.
That purpose had been to store the great Kanohi Ruhaku until its destined wearer claimed it. Each Maru had found their mask in a similar space of their respective element. And each of them had their Kanohi’s nature revealed to them. Including Stannis.
The Maru had reunited and shared their newfound abilities with each other - but now that she thought back on it, she noticed just how hesitant he’d been to tell them about the Hiripaki. Now knowing at least the basics of its power, she could understand why. He must have felt as reluctant to tell others about that kind of power as she did now. Not out of a desire to keep that power to oneself or to withhold knowledge - but out of awareness of what it was capable of and could do in the wrong hands. And now just like then, even sharing it with allies was a risk.
But that apprehension was more about the principle of the mask itself, not Makuta’s defeat specifically. And while she and the other Maru had been elated at the time - Stannis had been ponderous as usual.
She untucked her legs and briefly stretched them, before switching to a cross-legged sitting position, still facing the other Toa. Then, slowly, she replied:
“I know now that he was aware of risks that the rest of us weren’t at the time. Was it reversible? Theoretically, yes. You’ve seen master mariners and flax weavers tying knots - once tied, it is nearly impossible for the uninitiated to loosen them. Certainly not from inside the net. But using their knowledge and skill, the master knows just where to tug to make the knot unravel in an instant.”
Leah’s fingers danced through air, mimicking weaving motions.
“But no one else had that knowledge, so in practice…no.”
She sighed. No point putting it off any longer. In a way she was thankful Krayn had brought up Stannis by name himself - it took away the obstacle of that first step.
“I think that’s why he chose to keep the fact that Makuta hadn’t been destroyed from us. Which is why Ko-Koro was the only time you’ve seen the Maru together since we found out - and why we’ve not spoken to him since. I’m sorry we didn’t come clean when we first found out. But as far as we knew there was no other way to bring him back, so with everything else going on…like you put it: Dead or gone, it seemed like the same thing. I just hoped it was enough.”
“But this…the way things are now. I don’t think what we did was undone, exactly. No one untied the net, no…someone’s taken a blade to it.”
IC, Eita: Ga-Koro
"Well. That sure took much less time than I expected! When you said 'cactus', I was sure we were off to Po-Wahi!"
"Yes, I suppose we did get lucky that the Lesterin that Kanohi was tracking had one in his possession," Eita said with a slight smile.
 “I don’t suppose any of us actually have a house here?”
Eita shook his head. "'Fraid I'm obviously no help on that end," he said, referring to the fact that he and his people had only barely arrived in the village. He turned to Nara. "You have a home nearby, right? Would it be okay if we all went back to your place for this? I mean- if you don't feel comfortable with that, that's okay. We can visit an inn or something instead. You've already been so gracious today, helping me and all, and I'd hate to impose an impromptu cactus-eating on you."
IC: Hakari - Ga-koro - Warehouse -
With the danger over, Hakari sheathed her weapons and sighed. The Lesterin they'd been chasing all this time was subdued and would be turned into the proper authorites. The group had also acquired the coveted miracle cactus, but Hakari really didn't care much about that if she was honest.
All she could think about was home, not her home on Mata Nui, but Seprilli. Her memories of her homeland had all returned now, she was sure of that. She found it strange how different she used to behave, before the amnesia. She'd honestly mellowed out on Mata Nui, she'd been far more rebellious and rash in the past. It was almost as if there were two different Hakari, and now they were merged together in some weird, messy way.
She glanced at both Kanohi and Lapu, it was going to be...hard to say goodbye. They hadn't known each other for long, but she felt liked she'd formed a bond of sorts with the both of them, one that would not easily be broken. She was tempted to ask them if they wanted to come with her to Seprilli, but she knew that was a selfish thought, their place were here on Mata Nui...
...and hers was on Seprilli. She was going to leave soon, maybe not right at that moment, but now that their mission was more or less complete it was nearly time.
Perhaps she'd try a slice of that miracle cactus first, it probably just got you high but Hakari was cool with that.
"I...have to leave soon, but I guess it won't hurt to try some cactus?"
IC: Skyra Daring - Cael's Place -
"So he knew then." I hadn't meant to interrupt the dialogue between Leah and Krayn, but the words just sorta came out. Now I wouldn't have very said me and Stannis were sure close or knew each other well, but I did consider him both a friend and colleague. He was also the leader of the Toa Maru, and I, along with so many others on the island, had trusted him.
'Had' huh? Guess trust is that easy to break... I didn't even feel angry, just...disappointed. It made me wonder what sort of color Leah's mask had for that.
"I'm gonna go, you can fill me in later Krayn...bye!" I left the hut in an awkward hurry. I just needed time to think, time to process everything I just learned. What was I suppose to even do with information like that? Tell someone? Tell everyone? What good would that do anyway? It wasn't like they could just put Makuta in a bottle, cork it and then chuck it back into nothingness or whatever the #### they'd done.
While I was stewing in my thoughts I overheard Azusai mention food to Karoru. Now that was an idea, dinning out with two babes that had no idea who Makuta or Stannis were, perfect.
With a grin I walked over to the two girls. "I heard the mention of food? Well let's go, I know a place...and I'm buying!" When it came to money I was actually very well off, I certainly didn't need to worry about it at any rate. Most people didn't know this about me because well, they didn't ask.
[IC: Timak, Ga-koro Industrial district]
Timak sat on the side of a lilypad gangway, dangling their feet in the water, staring at the reflections on the waves as the situation unfolded behind them. When the scuffle in the warehouse had resolved, and everyone first came outside, Timak had congratulated Kimala and Lapu on their expert handling of the stone ape, and then quietly drifted over here, where they had sat ever since.
They just didn't feel connected to the situation somehow. Thinking back, they knew they had originally signed up to help out the group of Matoran based on some latent sense of Toa honor, but seeing how things happened back there... they were uncertain. These Matoran were perfectly capable of handling themselves. None of them besides Ranok had even spoken to him since the first meeting inside the Great Takea. Was Timak simply intruding and the Matoran were just humoring him? ... No. Eita had invited him over to the table back then...
The grey Toa's hunched figure almost seemed as if it would keel over into the water simply by the force of their downward thought spiral, but they were snapped out of it when they overheard Hakari's comment.
Try some??
The thought had never even occurred to Timak that the boon of their recent exploits could be shared. Swept to their feet by sudden overwhelming curiosity, they bounded over to the group.
"Wait, we're trying the cactus?! Can I try some too?"
"I can shed a little light on that."
Pieces were still missing, and Leah hadn't— quite— answered the entirety of his question. But she answered the most important parts. Stannis' culpability, the degree to which he withheld the truth knowingly, was more of a personal issue to Krayn. He'd had a little time to think about why. It offended his sense of right and wrong for Stannis' choice to have cost people that would never know he made it. The Dasakan exodus, the lives that had been lost and would be lost in the future, were all on his conscience. Not totally. No one, not even a Maru, could be held accountable for consequences beyond their own control. It could be that nothing would have changed. But no one would ever know because one man took away their chance to choose. But much more personally he had robbed Krayn of the chance for peace. After all he had given already he had intended to rest.
Now he couldn't. And that was something that he couldn't forgive Stannis for.
"As I was saying." He began again, shaking his head slightly as if to cast off the undertone of anger that had crept into his thoughts, barely noticing that Skyra had left. He would fill her and the others in on anything important that came next. "I had a chance to speak with... A friend who was there. He killed Echelon. But when he stabbed him the Vault was opened."
"I haven't talked to the Dasaka in depth, but I've listened. Something happened to unleash Rahkshi on their archipelago at about the same time. Something that we can infer, I think, occurred simultaneously on their home and ours. If something could link across that vast a distance I think we have to assume the same thing reached into wherever Stannis sent him."
IC: [Leah - Cael’s house]
“I had a feeling you might.”
The Toa Maru could feel the slightest hint of a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. Her mask hadn’t registered anything malicious from Krayn, obviously -  he hadn’t come here to deceive her, after all. But she’d been right about him knowing more.
“And I think you’re right - that whatever happened did so simultaneously. Ayiwah - the Dasakan commodore - reported she witnessed something like a sudden storm near Kini-Nui not too long ago…in fact just about the amount of time it’d take to sail to Kentoku and make it here by now from what I understand. I didn’t know what it meant before - but I’d bet that was the same thing too.”
Yes, she could definitely feel the gears turning now. Everything that had happened, right up until recently, the Dasakan exodus…even the Rahkshi this very morning: It was starting to form a picture. And there was a mystery here to solve. Interestingly enough, it seemed they already knew the who and why parts for the most part - what remained was the how. And it promised to be a big how. But that was her job now, as a Maru. Big problems were the norm. Small problems were a luxury.
Leah uncrossed her legs and swung them back over the side of the cot. Her eyes mat Krayn’s once again.
“And I think you’re right about it opening a way to whatever place we sent Makuta to let him back out too. I was actually going to look into that before…” she instinctively started to reach for the scars on her cheek, but checked the motion. “Before the Lesterin showed up.”
For a moment she grimaced, like she’d just smelled something rotten. Then she slightly shook her head and focused back on the matter at hand.
“Now…” she started, standing back up. “If you have questions for the Dasaka I think I can point you to the right people to ask. In turn, it might be helpful if I could talk to your friend. Taking out Echelon’s no small feat. I’d like to know more about how that happened.”
“In fact…maybe we should join forces. Or at least gather and share everything we know so far. I think if we work together we could get to the bottom of this. I’d understand if you don’t want to, given all that’s happened - but someone's undone something I fought very hard for. I'd consider it my duty to help you.”
"Unfortunately that's impossible. It was the firmest tone he had taken and Krayn met the Maru's eyes so there could be no misunderstanding. It wasn't anger or defiance, resentment for the circumstances or even secrecy born from mistrust. But it was a point on which he was totally unwilling to budge. Stubborn principle and obligation had merged into immovable certainty. "Not because of anything you have or haven't done, or because I'm unwilling to work with you. It isn't my choice to make."
"As far as the island is concerned this friend is dead. I think he's owed that peace. If he chooses to surface he can, and at that time you would be more than welcome to speak with him. Until then the best that I can do is to tell you everything that he told me, from Joske Nimil's plans and intentions through to his death and the confrontation with Echelon in Mangaia. I have notes that I can transcribe, if you wish."
The Toa Maru was quiet for a moment. At first it looked like she was going to say something, but then seemed to think better of it and instead, Krayn could see her set her jaw, before she very deliberately replied, keeping whatever emotion she’d just processed out of her voice:
“We’re all owed peace.”
She left it at that and, tone returning to normal, continued: “I would greatly appreciate those notes. Taking down Echelon is no small feat. So for what it’s worth, my regards to your friend. But regardless of meeting him or not, I still think we should collaborate.”
"I'm happy to, so far as my service with the Fowadi allows," The Po-Koro G- Sentinel (irregular? warrant officer?) responded almost absently. His mind had turned to his notes already and he tore a page off his pad to begin transcribing. His conversation with Dorian he had solidly in mind, and in his notes, but he needed to reach further back than that. There were relevant details. "My commissioning is a little irregular. We're bound for Ta-Koro next, if you wish to come with us I'm sure the Commander would have no objection."
It was when he put pen to paper that he paused. He had forgotten something, something important. It wasn't his fault; the details hadn't seemed relevant at the time. They'd been a sideshow to matters closer to home, even those eclipsed by the events that began only hours later. His resignation. His trip to Po-Koro, from there to Onu-Koro to catch up to the Fowadi. And then to Ko-Wahi. His shoulder ached and he rolled it a little, trying unconsciously to work the pain away, and frowned. The pieces were suddenly much more important, linked to...
"The Legend. That's where Stannis sent Makuta. Isn't it?"
“Yes, that is what it is called.” Leah confirmed, but didn’t say anything further as to not interrupt the other Toa’s thoughts.
Between that and the keeping place…just how many quasi-realities are out there and how many could be accessed?
IC: Kimala
The Toa of Crystal had just turned to check on Timak when the Sonics Toa suddenly stood and approached. She smirked a little, glad to have her worries assuaged, at least temporarily. She'd pass on eating the cactus, but she was curious. "What exactly is so miraculous about it?" she asked, approaching the group, but staying toward the edge of the crowd.
IC: Lapu
The silent Toa of Plants stood so still, one could easily have taken him for a tree, out of place as that would be in the middle of Ga-Koro. He turned as Hakari spoke, head tilted in curiosity. She had to leave, she said? He glanced at Kanohi, wondering if the two were going somewhere. He had joined them later, after all, and assumed that- mismatched as they were- they were some sort of team.
"Son of a..."
It was something he should have remembered. He had been there, he had been around the same people for ages, but it had slipped into a sort of blind spot; a spot in his memory overshadowed by the events before and after. And of course it had seemed like nonsense at the time. This Toa he had never met appeared out of nowhere, argued with people about things Krayn did not know, and disappeared just as quickly.
It wouldn't have changed anything. He had no context, and even if he had known he couldn't have changed it. But it was galling now to know in hindsight what it was that he heard.
"Shortly before I went to Ko-Koro I was in Le-Wahi with a motley assemblage of Toa. Joske showed up. He was talking about having returned from the Legend and rattled off a lot of things that, at the time, made no sense." He continued writing, putting down the details in clear, concise lettering. "It didn't make any sense then. Most of it now has already happened. But he made it a point to take back Heuani's sword."
Krayn shook his head.
"Looking at the ships in the harbor, it can only have been Dasakan crystal. A Dasakan sword before one should have been here and simultaneous events on both islands. It seems likely that's a link, there."
“The crystal flamberge…I thought Joske had taken possession of it after defeating Heuani. I wasn’t even aware he’d gone…are you sure he said he went into the legend? It wasn’t the keeping place?”
Leah remembered the weapon well. She’d first seen it at the battle of the Rama hive - and then later again, in Mangaia. Heuani had wielded it with deadly precision. She hadn’t made the connection before either, but of course a blade forged out of such crystal could only come from the archipelago. But if that was the case…a weapon from there on Mata-Nui so long before they ever encountered the Dasaka meant they couldn’t have been summoned from the legend in exchange for Makuta, could they?
“Oh karz.”
Suddenly her mind was racing, her hands clenching and unclenching in quick succession as a new realization dawned, which she immediately shared:
“I always thought that the sword had been forged by Makuta and was then given to Hueani when he became his favored servant. But if the sword came from Kentoku…unless Heuani acquired it by other means it means Makuta was likely aware of the link between the two lands long before any of us were and these simultaneous events were all part of his schemes already. Maybe this was his contingency plan all along...”
She let out a groaned curse, then took a deep breath.
“We need to find out who was present for the event on the Dasakan side and talk to them.”
IC, Eita: Ga-Koro
"I...have to leave soon, but I guess it won't hurt to try some cactus?"
"Wait, we're trying the cactus?! Can I try some too?"
Eita smiled and nodded. "Yes, you're more than welcome to have some of it," he said. "Same goes for all of you. You all helped, so you all can have some if you want."
"What exactly is so miraculous about it?" Kimala asked.
The Dashi shrugged. "Guess we'll have to find out," he said.
***
The group ended up going to a nearby hotel to have their fruity meal. Eita had paid for the room with some of his crystal currency, leading to the bewildered receptionist giving the group a big enough room for them all to sit in.
The group spread around the main room, choosing spots where they felt comfortable. On a nearby dresser Eita put a little stack of the small plates he had requested from the receptionist. He pulled out his metal knife and offered it to Ranok. "Care to do the honors?"
[Ga-Koro, Industrial District (Ranok)]
Ranok had, in the process of locating the hotel room, somehow acquired both a teapot and cups, and a jar of honey.   The musician, clearly at ease in the liminal space of the hotel room, nodded as he took the proffered knife and cut a few slices off of the cactus.
“Now, I have to emphasize that pure fruit is pretty bitter, if you wouldn’t mind waiting I’ll have some tea going in a few minutes…”
After placing the fruit wedges on some of the offered dishes, he put the knife down and took out his own, using it to delicately shave peaces of fruit off into the heating teapot.
IC: Nichou [Ga-Koro]
The scenes continue to shift in a blur to Nichou, as if a byproduct of hallucinogen consumption. It felt like minutes ago that he had entered the Koro and had his surprising reunion with Lekua, and yet also months, yet also it was still happening, that very day. It was difficult to precisely recall just how he had gone from that plaza, to being rescued from a plant monster by one of the strangers he met, to sitting in a hotel room composed in equal parts old friends, new friends, and complete strangers, all gathered in the beginning of some kind of post-combat relaxation ritual.
But then again, perhaps the day blending together was the cactus fruit talking. It certainly wasn't Nichou talking, given the fact that his mouth was preoccupied with a large slice of cactus fruit. It certainly wasn't the cactus fruit talking, given that fact that it was preoccupied with Nichou's large slice of mouth. It certainly wasn't Ranok talking, because Ranok was preoccupied with talking.
“Now homie-bros, I really gotta-lotta emphasize that purest fruit is prettiest bitterest, if you wouldn’t wait minding I’ll have some tea going in a few posts…”
The fruit was indeed bitter, and that made Nichou bitter as he bit the fruit, but he wasn't bitter because the fruit got less better as it got most bitter. The tea sounded like a sound plan, but Knichou knew he already had consumed a reasonable quantity of cactus, so he decided to decline. He knew how much cactus he had eaten because he knew how much he hadn't eaten, with the Matoran's visual subsystem using that deviation of how much he had eaten subtracted from how much he hadn't eaten in front of him to generate corrective commands to drive his decision from a position where it was, and thus arriving at the positions where it wasn't, where it now is: not needing any more cactus.
"No thanks, I think I'm full," the Onu-Koronan didn't say. Of course he wouldn't say what he thought he said - he had eaten an entire slice and it had yet to manifest any effects in his perceptions or behavior whatsoever! It was often said that everyone experienced the effects of miracle cactus differently, but Nichou hadn't expected that those effects would be entirely unremarkable - he felt as alive as he'd always never been.
"I can wait, Ranok - tea would be sublime," Nichou beamed with an overly mechanical pep in his step. "An epic idea."
NICHOU
(Thoughts)
Did I say that?
NICHOU looks up. CUT to WIDE of ceiling, where NICHOU sleeps on his back, staring at viewer with shut optics. TILT down 180 degrees to see NICHOU mirroring this pose in reality, with EXTRAS in room glancing at him. FAMILIAR CONSTELLATIONS shine through the lilypad floor.
[IC: Timak, Ga-Koro]
Timak waited for the tea. No chance they were trying the fruit raw, especially after seeing the absolute state of Nichou on the floor over there.
Taking a cup, and thanking Ranok, they took the first sip, finding it quite relaxing. They settled down further in the chair, slouching, propping their head against the back in preparation for a nice chillout session - and hopefully some remembering. That was the main excitement held in the tea - they were pretty sure they'd heard it could restore some memories of forgotten events... They took a shaky second sip, hoping for the best: an epiphany that explained how they really became a Toa and why. Maybe some nice memories of their home island (wherever that was) would be a bonus.
After the third sip Timak was feeling notably un-remembery.
"This tea is doing nothing," scoffed the gangly-limbed Toa, sprawled out on the chair with arms akimbo and spine all but horizontal. Then they simply chugged the rest of the cup. It wasn't even that hot.
A few more minutes passed, and after watching the snoozing onu-matoran and taking part in idle chatter with the rest of the room for a while, Timak was in need of some fresh air. So they got up.
The legs didn't move.
I said: They got up.
Nope. Sorry! Our code monkeys are working very hard to fix this problem.
Timak slumped even further down in the chair, and thought to theirself.
Why is my head thumping so loudly? This feels just like that time back in secondary school when I fell down the stairs on the way to the front door. God that was a weird day. Andrew turned up and we had the most normal afternoon, and then we went upstairs and found those Bionicle masks on the floor. And then we put them.. on... our noses? And then it grew and covered my face and turned me into a Toa, and then we got sucked through a weird swamp-coloured portal into a poorly-rendered 3D forest...
Karz, I knew I had misremembered something.
Wait, no, that can't be right, I was a matoran, not a.. squeaky pink flesh golem. Where the karz did that come from? And where is my mask, anyway?
They started crawling around on the floor, looking for it (though it was still on their face! ah, relatable).
"Hey guys have you seen my mask? I just remembered I'm supposed to polish it today... "
IC, Eita: Ga-Koro hotel
Eita opted to wait until the tea was finished, seeing as Nichou had quickly passed out after eating his slice of the fruit. With a smile and nod, he took the cup offered by Ranok and took a sip. The tea was, surprisingly contrary to what Ranok had said about the fruit’s bitterness, a bit sweet. Eita let the tea’s warmth fill his belly for a moment before glancing at the piece of the cactus fruit next to him on a plate. After a moment’s hesitation, he popped the slice into his mouth. He frowned slightly, confirming Ranok’s statement. He washed the taste down with some more of the tea.
“Yeah, I’m glad I waited for the tea,” he said with a little chuckle. He sat back in his chair, sipping his tea as he watched the others take in the spoils of their little encounter. Timak started crawling on the floor, asking where their mask was; Eita unintentionally let out a little giggle, even though the sight was more sad than funny.
Not long after downing the last of his tea, the Dashi felt a migraine begin.
Eita groaned a little, then clutched his head between his hands as the pressure grew. He began to feel pain in his skull like he had never felt before. “Ugh, I’m feeling… I’m gonna lie down,” he said. He got out of his chair, initially intending to find a bed or couch, but instead slowly got on the floor, resting his head against the cool wood boards. The world started to spin around him, and Eita’s mind faded into blackness.
***
The Dashi gasped as he awoke with a start. He was laying on hard ground. Above him, blackened trees rose up into the dark sky. He sat up with a groan, rubbing his head a bit as he did. He looked around. He was in the middle of a dense forest of burnt trees. There were no houses or structures of any kind in sight. The air had a stench of ash or charcoal.
Eita stood on shaky legs. “Hello?” he called out into the trees. There was no response. Eita wasn’t sure what was going on, but he knew he had to find a way back to civilization. Looking around, there was no clear path. The Dashi grunted and started trudging forward.
***
After what felt like an eternity (but was probably only fifteen minutes), Eita heard some voices in the distance. “Hello? Who’s out there?” he called. He continued to hear the voices, but it didn’t seem like they were responding to him. The Dashi jogged in the direction of the voices.
He came to a small clearing, sighting a group of seven Matoran who were discussing something. “Hello! Would anyone mind telling me where I am?” Eita asked aloud to them as he approached. The gathered Matoran continued with their discussion, seemingly ignoring him. “Hey! Hello?!” Eita said again, louder this time. He walked up to one Matoran, a white-armored one, and waved a hand in front of his face. He reached out to grab the Matoran by the shoulder, and was shocked to find that his hand passed right through him.
Eita took a step back. “W-What in the world is going on?” He shouted aloud. As before, none of the Matoran stopped to pay him any mind.
A noise suddenly caught the attention of the gathered beings. The Dashi looked around, and soon found himself and the Matoran surrounded by the same lizardlike monsters that had ravaged the Kentoku Archipelago. Rahkshi, the Dashi thought grimly. He drew his crystal sword and prepared for battle. Most of the Matoran gathered did the same. One of them, one with an odd mix of red, yellow, and blue armor, spoke up. "Begone, slime of Makuta, or feel us bite." The scene was tense for a moment, until a brown Rahkshi began the attack. It leapt at the Matoran who had spoken. Eita leapt at the creature and swung his blade low, aiming for an ankle. The blade simply passed through the creature’s limb, as the Dashi’s hand did with the Matoran earlier. Eita sighed and clenched his teeth.
He turned his head just in time to see one of the Matoran, a green-and-gold one, get skewered by one of the Rahkshi.
“NO!” Eita exclaimed. His heart sank, his breath quickened as he raced over to the fallen one. He found that he still couldn’t interact with him. His eyes darted around, and he saw another Matoran, this one an odd mix of red, yellow, and blue, dart away. The Rahkshi turned and pursued the fleeing Matoran, with one Rahkshi, the one that had stabbed the now-fallen Matoran, tripping into lava and melting.
The fallen Matoran’s companions rushed over to see what they could do, but the situation was sadly hopeless. Eita helplessly watched as the Matoran coughed up some blood, while the rest was pooling from the wound he had sustained. The dying Matoran opened his mouth and spoke. “Darn. I was worried something like this would happen." His body shuddered as it began to shut down. The Matoran coughed again, and his voice left his mouth once more, but a little weaker, quieter. "May Mata-Nui guide you on your journey, brothers..." he whispered faintly. His eyes closed, his breathing stopped, and his heartlight dimmed. Eita bowed his head and began to sob, confused as to why he was seeing such a sight.
Then everything froze. The ragged breaths of the other Matoran stopped, the faint hissing of the nearby lava quieted, and the cinders in the air stood still where they hung.
Eita paused in the middle of a sob, looking around. He stood, examining the ashes that had frozen in their descent to the ground with confusion and curiosity.
“Why…?” he muttered to himself. From behind him came a rustling, then a grunt. The Dashi turned, startled to find the fallen Matoran getting back up.
“Now that’s a good question, one that I don’t really have an answer to,” the Matoran said, blood dripping from his mouth and his still-open wound.
Eita took a readied stance with his sword. “What the **** is going on? I just saw you die,” he said to the walking corpse. “How are you up and talking?”
The Matoran let out a little smile. “Well, from what I gather, all of what you see here- this forest, these Matoran, and myself- are all part of a hallucination brought on by the Miracle Cactus.”
Eita lowered his blade. “Okay, that I can believe,” he said. “But what exactly am I being shown? Who are you?
The green Matoran let out a sharp breath as he looked around with dim eyes. The other Matoran present were still frozen in their kneeling positions as if nothing was happening.
“What you just saw was the moment of my death,” the Matoran said. “As for my name, it’s Aurax. And it’s really your name too- because I am you.
The Dashi’s crystal blade fell to the ground. He tried to let out words but found he couldn’t. Aurax approached him and led him to a rock, where they both took a seat. “This is all very hard to process, but it seems that after I, you, we, died, somehow, we were reincarnated on Iki, in a new body.”
Eita furled his brow. “But why didn’t I have my memories? And how exactly did… we get reincarnated?” he asked Aurax. The Cy-Matoran shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine for both of those questions. Personally, I think we were blocking our own memories off.” Eita looked at him quizzically. “I don’t know why, but I think that maybe it was the trauma of dying that scared us from thinking about the truth. But I guess part of us still wanted to know, which…”
“Which explains the migraines,” Eita said, finishing Aurax’s sentence. “I see. I shouldn’t have any more of those, right?” Aurax smiled and nodded in confirmation. Eita sighed a breath of relief.
Aurax stared off into the distance. “As for your second question, I don’t know how it is exactly we came back. Maybe the Great Spirits took pity on us?” Now it was Eita’s turn to shrug. “Maybe. But why would we be brought back in the first place?”
The Cy-Matoran said nothing, but gestured to the still-frozen Matoran. “Now, do you remember their names?” He asked the Dashi. Eita looked at each Matoran in turn. “…Lepidran. Sulov. Oreius. Reordin.” He glanced at the last one, a Matoran of Plasma. “Stannis. We were his Company, and before that…” Eita paused as the world began to whirl around him, save for Aurax and the rock the two of them were sitting on.
Suddenly, they found themselves in front of a large structure shaped like a Toa’s maskless face. A group of Matoran was gathered in front of it. “…there were his Companions.” He scanned the gathered beings. Two of them he instantly recognized as ones that were currently with him, and the names of the others came back to him quickly. “Lekua, Nichou, Dece, Atiel,” he stated. “I wish I had left them in better circumstances,” he said, recalling that those who were not chosen to accompany Stannis to find the Essence Stones of the First Toa were not happy at the group’s disbanding. Aurax put a hand on Eita’s shoulder. “What’s done is done,” he said, “but now you- I mean, I, have a chance to move forward, and figure out what my new Destiny is. And perhaps, make things right with some of your old friends.” Eita nodded. “Maybe I’ll take a page out of Stannis’s book and do some Wandering,” he stated. “Maybe they'll join me. Just like old times.”
The Dashi turned and noticed that the Cy-Matoran had disappeared.
Only Aurax was left.
***
First the first time in a long time, Aurax opened his eyes, letting the rays of the early morning sun fill his vision. It was as if a curtain had been lifted, or a door had been opened. He was keenly aware of what had happened; his mind felt at rest, with not a hint of pain. Rather, a feeling of wholeness had come upon him.
Letting out a small groan, the Dashi got to his knees and surveyed the scene. His friends, new and old, were scattered around him, sleeping. He quickly walked over to Nichou first and started shaking him. “Nichou! Wake up! I’m back! Aurax is back!” he said in a slight whisper. He moved over to Lekua next and started shaking him, trying to rouse him.
How eager he was to share the news!
IC Kanohi - Ga-Wahi - Ga-Koro
Kanohi had followed the group, but had not partaken in the cactus for two reasons. Firstly, his visions were already nonsensical enough since his captivity, he did not know what this cactus would affect them. The strangely colored De-Matoran, Ranok was his name, right? Kanohi though he had implied there was something sketchy about Miracle Cactus. The cross-wired vigilante had enough mental health struggles without trying a substance he knew nothing about.
The second reason he hesitated though was he did not eat. Kanohi did not like chewing food, or digesting with his mouth. He was not even sure he could do it, the idea repulsed his body too much to try. Instead, he would draw the energy out of food through his hands, letting meals crumbled to dust at his touch.
The Matoran were a sliding scale of animalistic to mechanic, and he tended towards the latter.
So instead of partaking in the cactus, Kanohi had stood watch in case anyone had an adverse reaction, or if allies of that Lesterin struck back at them for shutting his operation down.
The vigilante still was unsure of many details surrounding this adventure, from what they knew he had spent the past few years as a merchant, until suddenly my he changed in manner and personality. From the sound of the timeline, he changed around when Hakari regained her memories. It’s possibly he had reverted to his personality from before he washed on Mata-Nui’s shores.
Please Mata-Nui, do not return my memories from before I awoke on the shore.
Kanohi was jostled from his thoughts by the sound of footsteps. He shifted from his perch to see Eita shaking Nichou. Kanohi had been unfocused for much of this, and Eita was whispering, but as he grappled over to make sure Nichou was unharmed, he caught the last sentence.
Aurax is back!
"The Legend." Krayn confirmed, beginning to finish his transcription. "I've never heard of the Keeping Place. The flamberge's chain of custody isn't totally clear to me, but it was reclaimed by Joske from the same person who killed Echelon. They reclaimed it in turn after Echelon killed Joske."
"I never made the connection, either, but I got a good look at the sword when Joske evidently returned from the Legend to claim it. Looking at the Dasaka here in Ga-Koro I have no doubt it's the same material." He shrugged slightly, skimming the notes he had written down carefully to make sure he had left nothing out. After a few moments he tore it carefully from the notebook and held it out to the Maru. "What happened on the Kentoku end is outside my knowledge entirely."
"Unfortunately I have to be back aboard the Fowadi before it leaves, or catch it again in Ta-Koro." A note of humor crept into his tone. "It wouldn't inspire confidence if I go off the reservation the day after someone re-hires me. You can be accommodated aboard the Fowadi if you wish to accompany us, I'm sure."
IC: Kimala and Lapu
Curious, Kimala followed the group, but lacked the curiosity to try the Miracle Cactus, herself. She wasn't fond of entering altered mental states- not even drunkenness. A crystal clear mind was what made her effective. As... a teacher, of course. A habit drilled into her by her past life, but one that held true today. Plus- she reasoned- if she, one of the few Toa of the group, started lashing out as a result for whatever reason, it would be a bloodbath. Bad idea. She didn't entirely approve of Timak's choice to take some, but it wasn't as if she was their guardian or anything. So she just stayed alert.
Lapu debated internally whether to follow them at all, but before he had the chance, they were already on the move. He was eager to head back to Le-Wahi, now that the perversion of nature had been dealt with, but he also wasn't eager to part ways with his current traveling partners. So he stayed, at least for now. He idly noted the lack of mud he tracked into the hotel. Ga-Koro was a rather clean place. Not a bad thing, but another thing he was unused to. And the walls and ceiling around him made him conscious of how much weight was being held over his head. That was a bad thing. But he shrugged it off as the subject turned to the cactus. He had to admit, he was curious, and took some tea as well as a slice. The tea was nice. He wasn't used to drinking hot things, but it had a most pleasant effect in his chest. He enjoyed it for a moment. The moment gave him the opportunity to witness the effects of the cactus in a few other members of the group.
It was curious. Some sort of toxin that affected the mind, not the body. Fascinating. Now resolved not to actually eat of it, he instead studied it with his elemental power, seeking a way to replicate the effect. It was complicated, however... Probably the most complex property of a plant he had ever attempted to reproduce. He toyed at it in various ways. Absorbing it with his element, then regenerating a portion of it. And by pouring his power into it, he was able to- at least it seemed so- regenerate a full second cactus out of his piece. He didn't know if the whole plant possessed the toxin, however, and if it did, whether it was as effective as the original. And he didn't want to try testing it on himself.
Kimala rubbed her mask as Timak got on all fours. She had no idea how to handle this sort of sitation... so she tried something logical first. Taking Timak's arm, she lifted them back into their seat and pressed a handkerchief into their hand. "It's on your face, Timak. You're wearing your mask. Now here, you can start polishing."
[IC: Timak, Ga-Koro]
Timak let Kimala put them back on the chair, looking at her with equal parts admiration and remorse at needing to be handled so. Of course, in their inebriated state, this came across as likely the most awkward stare Kimala had ever received.
They took the handkerchief - marvelling at how this piece of fabric had appeared, wondering what other tricks Kimala may have up her sleeves - and offered a meek "thank you". As they began vigorously rubbing their mask with it, they were mildly conscious of the fact that this was not something they had ever done before... but it kinda felt nice...
[Ga-Koro, Central Hotel (Ranok)]
Ranok made sure that everyone else who wanted to try the cactus had a cup of tea before he began to sip one himself.   It would not due to get, as Nichou was doing, lost in the proverbial sauce when he was playing host.  (Well, somebody else was paying for the room, but that was typical.)
Ranok had no reservations about the cactus itself--he was telling the truth when he said the fruit was quite bitter.   There was a lot he had learned from the old cactus growers of Po-wahi about how the akiri’s mandates on “legal control” had fractured the old systems of barter, but he was less inclined to give this little group a history lesson, especially since he didn’t truly understand the complexity of the issue.
He had managed to comprehend one lesson on the nature of cactus, however, and that was it was a strange complex thing unlike any other drug, natural or otherwise.   The miracle cactus did not just do one thing, it fed on expectations.   If you believed your head would be filled with strange and semi-prophetic visions, that was exactly what would happen to you.   The story was the same whether you expected to have a talk with Mata-Nui himself, be rid of a chronic pain, or just have a long and particularly satisfying nap.   But the truest experience of cactus was gained by emptying your mind of all expectations—once you were able to achieve this once, it was easy.   A single experience is, after all, is all one needs to form a new expectation.
So Ranok, unlike the others in the room, did not watch reality swim before his eyes.   Instead, it sharpened, everything became intricately detailed and wondrous—the texture of the woven reeds beneath his legs was intensely interesting, and he ran his his hands of the ridges as he looked at the dazzling lights thrown by Eita’s crystal armor and it was just so pretty.  All the barriers that he’d learned to keep up, to avoid getting overwhelmed by the flood of sound in the places where he worked, all that concentration was swept away and it was okay, because it was all good, the voices washing over him in a chorus of tones and timbers, each unique in their instrumentation, kept in time by Nichou’s gentle breathing, they were all an intensely sublime symphony of a moment that could only happen because all these people were here.
He was savoring each sound, intently watching their producers so he could memorize every wonderful thing about them when something new punctuated the landscape, crystal tone of a word, a new note.
“Aurax is back!”
IC: [Leah - Cael’s house]
“If you will have me, I’d like to help you to get to the bottom of this. I could definitely help the Fowadi cut down on travel time. But…if we need insight into what happened on the archipelago’s side of things, those who can tell us about that are most likely here in Ga-Koro still. If we leave now, chances are they’ll travel over the coming days as well and it’ll be harder to find them later. Perhaps I should talk to the Dasaka first and then catch your ship in Ta-Wahi. Of course, if you stick around, there’s a chance to meet their empress. If anyone knows about strangers from another land visiting Kentoku, it’s her. Figured that’s where I’d start.”
IC: [Rhow - Inner Port]
The Skakdi parked her bulk opposite the smaller Dasaka. She still felt a little awkward, she’d mostly seen these benches used by Matoran on dates.
Focus on my oldest memory. Okay. Focus. Can do.
She sent her mind back, far as she could remember. Location wise, she didn’t have to go far.
She was in Ga-Wahi. Far from the Koro, standing in the shallow water Of a secluded cove. Ahead, a fin cut through the waves, on the hunt - but she was not the prey…
The Menti could see her eyes narrow, with a glint of something dangerous behind them, but just for a heart light flash, then it was gone.
“Got it.”
IC: Hakari - Ga-koro - Central Hotel-
Hakari, for better or worse, tried a piece of the cactus raw. She waited a while to see if anything happened...were her fingers tingly now? She guessed so, perhaps it was her Lesterin biology but she wasn't feeling all that much from consuming the miracle plant. "It's...alright I guess." It seemed to be affecting the others a lot more than it did for her, but that was alright she supposed. She'd be leaving soon enough, and she wouldn't want to use her mask to travel at high speeds while...encumbered.
“Aurax is back!” Hakari heard someone shout suddenly, causing her to turn around at the commotion.
"Aurax is back? That's great!" Hakari said cheerfully. "...who is Aurax?" She had no idea who this Aurax was come to think of it.
IC:
"Unfortunately, Krayn's right. I don't know how much time we have for that ourselves."
I hadn't had much to say over the intervening conversation—mostly just sitting back, taking notes of my own, and observing my current patient to make sure there were no lasting effects of whatever poison had made its way into her system—but given that it seemed to be winding to a conclusion as most pertinent knowledge had already been shared, I saw no real reason to maintain my silence forever. Beyond that, I knew we'd likely have to find Skyra and corral her back to the ship, if the other two didn't have the presence of mind to do so. "Well, for him at least. I'm just the ship's doctor, not an investigator. But, if you're willing to do that bit of sleuthing for us and meet us in Ta-Koro, that might be for the best. I'll even be willing to count your aid as payment for my fee."
I hadn't charged a fee in years, but maybe she didn't know...she probably did, though.
"Just try not to get scratched again in the process. I'd rather not risk losing one of the island's most powerful when things are just starting to get worse."
IC:
Sato shrugged as well. "Fair enough," she replied, even if she didn't like leaving the issue to get handled without any involvement. Being forced to abandon the palace like she did still stung, and the fact that some other attack seemed to be falling upon the fleet so close to the mobile palace made her sword arm itch. "Like I said, down to the far end of the docks from here. Keep an eye out for Arisa, if you remember her, she's the one who dr—made me get on a ship."
By Zataka's...Don't question it, Sinshi.
