IC: Zyla & Daijuno Dastana | Ga-Koro Docks, Aboard the Fishing Boat Ruki

"My, ah, most gracious thanks, my lady," Zyla said, standing for an instinctive curtsy that came out - with an inopportune swaying of the ship on the tide - a little more clumsy than the assistant would have preferred. Zuto Nui had been merciful that the Commodore had already turned back to the engine before Zyla had even finished. As she sat back down, she tried to ignore Ms. Daijuno's snort.

"If I may be- if I may be so bold, my lady," she continued, having to raise her voice to be heard over the sputtering engine, "may I enquire as to the nature of this trip?!"

IC: [Ayiwah - aboard the Ruki]

“There’s nothing bold about a fair question. But in light of recent events, answers must wait for the moment.” Ayiwah replied as she put the engine into reverse while Inzu and Koso aided to push the Ruki away from the pier. The Menti were clearly back in their element.

The commodore for her part could feel excitement well up inside her. All the planning, studying charts and working the numbers had been dry, exhausting work - but actually getting underway, her hands at the helm and with a clear mission objective - it made it all worth it. The feeling carried over to her body language as well. Daijuno noticed the commodore seemed more at ease somehow.

They navigated their way out of the crowded harbor at the fastest possible safe speed until they reached the open waters of the bay. Ayiwah turned them onto a heading that mimicked the typical routes she had observed the local fishers taking.

“Brace.” she advised the Dashi, giving them just enough time to grab hold of something before she opened up the throttle. The bow rose sharply, waves rhythmically slapping the bottom of the hull.

Once she was certain the boat was running steady, Ayiwah handed off the helm to Inzu and briefly knelt by the railing, reaching a hand over the side into the water while simultaneously scanning the surrounding sea and sky. At the bow, Koso was clearly scanning their surroundings as well. A moment later the two Menti exchanged ‘all clear’ nods and the commodore moved over to sit next to the two Dashi.

She produced a map from a larger pouch strapped to her thigh and spread it out so Zyla and Daijuno both could see. The map showed the eastern central section of Mata-Nui, encompassing all of Ga-Wahi, its coastline - but more importantly the rivers feeding into Naho bay. Their eyes were drawn to one of the larger ones on account of the many navigational annotations marking its meandering flow.

Ayiwah tapped an area that was very much upstream and then leaned in closely enough so they could hear her.

“This is a scouting mission to find a suitable location for Dasaka-Koro.

IC: Daijuno & Zyla Dastana | Aboard the Ruki

Daijuno could not help but laugh. My Goddess, she might have even begun to like this woman - or at least her sheer chutzpah.

"I'll give you this, Commodore: you're always full of surprises," she said, already reaching into the innermost pocket of her coat for the half-smoked cigar she kept here, making sure it was there for the groundbreaking ceremony that was flickering to life in her vision. "Do the locals know about this plan yet?"

“The Akiri knows.” Ayiwah confirmed. “It was among the first things we spoke of the night we learned of the arrival.”

“But it shouldn’t come as a surprise. We cannot impose upon Ga-Koro’s hospitality indefinitely. And while safe harbor may satisfy for now, once this new reality settles in…you know what Toroshu can be like.”

Ayiwah glanced back across the bay. Even at this distance, her beloved Yukanna was still clearly visible. She longed to take her back out to sea…but this took priority.

“And we cannot stay aboard our ships…I will have need of them.”

IC: Zyla & Daijuno | Aboard the Ruki

"Akiri: the Toroshu of this land," Daijuno whispered to Zyla.

She had to bite back a few choice words about what Toroshu could do with their desires and where they could put them - for even her friendly terms with Ayiwah didn't change what the Commodore represented at the end of the day, and Daijuno sorely needed to be on the ground floor of as lucrative an operation as this shaping up to be.

"Do we know anything about this potential spot so far?" she asked, tracing a finger along the coast. "We haven't scouted it yet, but what makes it an initial contender?"

Zyla, for her part, could not help but let the words I will have need of them echo in her mind uncomfortably. Visions of a Dasakan armada sailing back towards the black smoke of a fallen Sado burned in her mind's eye, and she could barely suppress a shiver in the mid-morning heat.

She recognized the look on Zyla‘s face. The Dashi understood.

As for Daijuno, she didn’t need to see her to know her reaction to the mentioning of authority figures. But they’d address that later…

To answer her question, simply saying ‘a dragon told me’ probably wasn’t sufficient, no matter how strange this island was. However, she had checked the recommendation against other sources and found it promising.

She continued the Dashi’s trace up the river. “Enough space and fresh water for our people in a defensible position for starters.”

IC: Daijuno & Zyla | Aboard the Ruki

"Fair enough," Daijuno said, her gaze already drawn away from the map and towards the real thing: the distant mouth of that promising river. Her thumb grazed the pommel of the dagger sheathed at her waist. She had barely been beyond the borders of metropolitan Ga-Koro in all the months she had stayed here - and the stories that travellers would share in the Tidalpool or the Great Takea were even more grotesque. Reptilian demons and undying cults....

"Let's get to it, then," she said. Just stories, those things had been. She would believe them when she saw them.

And she would pray that she did not see them.

The commodore took the helm again and they were off. She kept cross checking the map versus a small hourglass - navigating the bay by dead reckoning - but the other two Menti on lookout took the time to point out the occasional school of Takea to the Dashi. Daijuno noticed that these were smaller than the jaws that welcomed people to Rhow’s implied. So they came in larger sizes too. But the Menti were obviously keeping an eye out for even worse and bigger things.

But soon enough the water got too shallow again for the sharks. The mouth of the river loomed up ahead, much larger in person than it had appeared to Daijuno at a distance. Trees loomed to either side of the bank. After a few feet, the jungle grew thick enough to completely block the view. The only clear path was the water snaking its way inland.

Ayiwah slowed the Ruki down to the appropriate speed and pointed it upstream.

IC: Zyla & Daijuno | Aboard the Ruki

Although both Zyla and her employer had worked in the lumber business for many years, the jungles of Kentoku were a far cry from what she saw here in Mata Nui. The bamboo forests of Odaiba bore the fingerprints of mothers upon mothers upon mothers whose generations stretched back millenia into the archipelago's past, so that their height and spread and density were controlled constants harmonized to the will of the people. To look upon those forests had been to look upon the Dasaka themselves - for as the Dasaka had been molded in Zuto Nui's image, so too had the bamboo been molded in the Dasaka's.

The jungles of Mata Nui were born of no such molding - and if they were, it was of an intelligence that Zyla could not and would not fathom. These were deep and dark and thick, untamed and wild in ways she had thought only the sea at storm could be. The horizon before the Ruki was, to her eye, a Rahi which would consume those unwary enough to tread upon its territory as easily as would those sharks that the soldiers kept pointing out.

"How much farther now to the site, my lady?" she asked.

[Aboard the Ruki (Yukie)]
The newly elevated toroshu of Clan Plangori examined the jungle with an eye filled more with evaluation than apprehension.

Unlike the bamboo groves of Odaiba, the jungles of Oki had still remembered their wildness and still resisted, whether by royal decree or something deeper hidden power, the taming hand of the Dasaka.   Yukie knew the cost of the jungle’s embrace well enough; it was the reason he had neither father nor grandparents.  But it was from those collections of tangled trees that the Plangori had discovered the key to their success: the rich browns of cutch, the red of sappanwood, tumeric—both a fragrant flavoring and golden yellow, the depths of indigo, and above all—the murasaki, the precious gromwell that lent its deep purple to both the Plagori themselves and the royal Umbralines.

The ringti of the clan had managed to salvage a few of their supply of dye plants, tended carefully over the long weeks at sea, but they desperately needed ground that would accept this precious cargo.   Or better yet, native varieties in the jungle.

The two clan saihoko that had accompanied him discussed possible ways of exploring the underbrush with hushed tones, but Yukie watched the shore in silence.   Despite the importance of the mission, he found his thoughts wandering toward his sister.  He truly hoped Ko-koro would give her the peace she needed, but this island was full of surprises.

IC Yumiwa | Ga-Koro, the Yukanna

I had chosen to remain on the Yukanna after my conversation with Maru. A moment afterward I'd received word that both she and her green friend disappeared in a flash of light, a glimpse into the kind of power these 'toa' possessed which both astounded and concerned me. If these toa, powerful as they were in elements of nature with abilities beyond any a Dasaka had seen, had been unable to halt or destroy the being named Makuta, what chances could my people hope to have? What hope did we have? And what of those clans who remained on Kentoku, either by choice or fate?

I'd sighed and watched the sun set over the mountainous horizon, appreciating that at least this foreign land shared the same sun.

***

As a the flagship of the Imperial Fleet, the Yukanna had been outfitted with the best equipment to support the coordination efforts of its flag-level staff for the rest of the navy. Notably, this included maps and charts in the ship's main room, where officers had wasted no time in importing the best cartographical representations of Mata Nui for study and comparison with Kentoku's islands. I'd wandered there to do the same and stood over the maps strewn over the low tables.

My eyes drifted from shore to mountain, across the center and to the other shore, noting the scribbled demarkations between the 'Wahi' and labels for landmarks and roadways from Naho Bay to the Fau Swamp, and up to the pockmarked coastline of Onu-Wahi. My gaze fixated on the volcano at the center of it all, both in awe of its size and in apprehensive fear of the volcano it reminded me of. Did the Mangaia hold secrets of its own like our Mount Koshiki?

"Dihunai," I beckoned, calling my advisor and friend. "Tell me, what are your thoughts on Mata Nui thus far?"

"Dihunai. Tell me, what are your thoughts on Mata Nui thus far?"

IC: Long Dihunai [Ga-Koro, The Yukanna]

The Menti thought back to her experience the prior day. Foremost on her mind was the attempted hijacking of the Ryuu.

"Its people are resourceful and powerful..."

Dihunai knew firsthand that unfocused willpower could be self destructive. That pirate clearly lacked friends (or a plan) and it lead to his capture, despite his wits and improvisation. At the end of the day, Toa Leah was able to respond and lead a rescue.

"Some are disciplined. Like with any people..."

Toa Leah may have helped save the Ryuu, but to Dihunai, Leah's credibility deteriorated as soon as she admitted that it was her war that befell Dihunai's clan.

"But I doubt that they will help us reclaim our homes. That Toa apologized for bringing us into their island's war - but would she die for another clan's homeland? Even on Odaiba, the bond between Chand and Long was unique, and my honor to defend my people didn't extend to your family's empire. Our clans would hold a Naffir to unite efforts in times where it was crucial, but that was because we were neighbors and relied on each other for a natural balance of peoples. I fight with you because I believe it's how I can best help my clan and my neighbors. We are not their neighbors - they have no obligation to help. They would need an incentive, and that's what worries me."

She leaned against the table with both arms, turning her attention to the maps. Clearly the island of Mata Nui had many unique regions, with large and small settlements. She was surprised to see several different minor settlements on the mountain ranges. Would the Chand-Long refugees she had escorted to the evacuation fleet fit in best there, like on mount Koshiki?

"Their homeland has its own balance of clans that we have been forced to disrupt..."

There was uncertainty in Dihunai's voice at the end - an unspoken question of whether or not the Dasaka's disruption of Mata Nui's balance would be good or bad. So much was unpredictable.

IC: [Ayiwah - aboard the Ruki]

“As far as as the river will take us and then further on foot.” came the answer to Zyla’s question. Ayiwah indicated their route on the map again.

As intimidating as the jungle to either side seemed at first, after the trees didn’t immediately reach down to smother them in greenery and a chance encounter with a pair of Matoran in a canoe coming down river proving they weren’t the only ones venturing out this way, a short while later the surroundings just became the new status quo. The river was still wide and they had a good draft and room to maneuver. So far, so good.

She let Inzu take over the helm again for a bit and joined the thus-far quiet Yukie.

“How fares your clan, Toroshu?”

IC Yumiwa | Ga-Koro, Yukanna

It is that which concerns me,” I murmured, referring to the disruption my entire people’s presence was sure to be causing on this land, this Mata Nui. Things looked pretty okay in Ga-Koro, but beneath the sympathetic cordiality in welcoming refugees there was bound to be simmering resentment and weariness. We were the strangers in a strange land, and we could only stumble around trying to regain a footing for so long before the native people began to have their patience stretch thin. The Dasaka nation’s cultural strength was a fortifying influence on the Archipelago, a result of centuries upon centuries of carefully cultivated social maneuvering for only the strongest of norms to prevail, but that sort of stubbornness could very well doom us here, where we are not at home and deprived of the world we grew our strength in. Assimilation would be hard to do already, and our lust for a vengeful return home would make it unwise to truly make ourselves too comfortable.

But if we cannot find a way to endear ourselves to the Matoran nations and obtain their alliances in a war effort, if we could not at least make ourselves more than mere listless refugees feeding off the hospitality of the akiri and their toa caste’s sympathies, then how will we have any hope to return home? We who were masters of statecraft and diplomacy at home were confronted with an entirely different cast of characters to contend with here, and the balance of power between these petty kingdoms was about to be questioned by the Dasaka’s foreign influence.

I shared my thoughts on the whole of the matter directly to Dihunai with a tilt of my head, my thoughts pouring out of my mind and into hers like water cascading from vase to decanter, accepted and mingled with freely in trust.

I spoke again, saying, “By now, my cousin the commodore must have departed in search of harbor for us to place our own pylons. I have a strong desire to explore this island myself, but as a matter of diplomacy. There are five other cities we need to befriend—I want to visit them all, meet their leaders, and present the case of our friendship." I smiled a little, a stifled laugh from an amusing realization. "And I’m sure the are equally as curious about us as we are of them.

It would please me if you accompanied me, of course. Perhaps we can find a place for the Tajaar to reside as well, on your own terms, should you prefer somewhere other than where Aya places the imperial banner. If you would like.

IC: Long Dihunai [Ga-Koro, The Yukanna]

Yumiwa continued to surprise Dihunai. The royal perceived Dihunai's worries as strongly as she trusted the Tajaar's intentions.

"Diplomacy is outside my area of expertise - but I will join you for this, and continue your soulfire training on the road," Dihunai replied with a nod. "Which city are you going to first?"

It irritated Dihunai how little she knew about their potential allies.

IC Yumiwa | Ga-Koro, Yukanna

I let my lips curl in contentment, perhaps a little mischievously excited for receiving more Soulfire training—a niche expansion of the more traditional Dasaka art of Soulsword which I still had great difficulty with anything beyond the rudimentary. But just as it was so titillatingly close to mirthful exuberance, my nascent smile caught snags at the corners of my mouth and evaporated as I recalled my previous tutor back on Sado, the one who my family thought the world of, once.

While my uncle never did seem to care much for my menti training, my teacher, Inokio, always did seemed to think I would become an esteemed Battlemaster just like him, one of the cream of the crop of Dasaka warriors and just shy of the ancient sages of legend. I was nothing like him, though, nothing like the conniving, treacherous swordsmaster-spy. Yet here I was, a world away from where we bade our last farewells, and I still grappled with falling short of his disqualified expectations of me. Maybe the truth was I didn't fall far from the tree, after all.

I flashed a grin back and forced it to flourish, more born out of pain than joy. "I'd like that very much," I said, saying all that needed to be said about Dihunai's offer of training, then scanned the map one more time. "There," I said, pointing to the coastline just south of Naho Bay. "I hear there is a great tellescūpe at this location I would very much be interested in checking out, and then to Ta-Koro, supposedly a great fortress surrounded by a lake of lava. Then... I hear they have this thing called a 'cable-car' that travels up to vast mountains perpetually laden with winter's shawls, then through these alpine valleys to Ko-Koro, a place of learning and prophesy."

I paused, realizing I was getting ahead of myself in my excitement for adventure, and recollected my spine to its proper erect posture. "We can take my yacht to the tellescūpe, but from there we will need guides, and other delegates. I'm sure there are some among our peoples who would appreciate a trek across this land as well.

"Zafin," I bade, turning my quick gaze to my handmaiden, who appeared from a bulwark obediently and noiselessly. "Send a request to any toroshu you feel would be receptive to determine if any of they or their clans-people care to join me in traversing these Matoran nations, then let's try and find guides among the Matoran."

"Ma'am."

I sighed out through my nose as Zafin ran out of the hull to deliver my soft summonses, a long exhale of restrained giddy relief. I'd never have said it aloud around my mom (Dad was a different story), but I was looking forward to getting my cloak a little dirty again.

OOC: Zelvin from Le-Wahi

IC: Zelvin (Ga-Wahi; near Hura-Mafa River)

Zelvin had been quite grateful for the choice to give herself an extra sturdy walking tool as she crossed the foothills of the Valmai Volcano heading due east from Kini-Nui. She had for now seen her curiosity about matters of the divine sated for the moment, and she was headed to possibly her favorite Koro to find herself a more directly invigorating and pleasurable pursuit. Something that could provide some excitement to balance her current diet of intellectual stimuli. Zelvin was often in this mode of thought. She was a hired hand, a sellsword, but she had been quite good at it. As the old saying went; beware the old in a profession where they die young.

Even before she became a Toa, she had been like this. She could only assume that she had been so for a while wherever she had wandered before washing up here. Somewehere on the banks of the river ahead of her, if she recalled correctly.

She stepped down from the foothills, pulling back her hood to enjoy the sun for a moment before she turned her attention to her walking stick. Gleaming sky blue crystal, twinkling in the sun's rays.

She grabbed onto it, and with her powers it stretched and thinned out, and she reached into her robe to pull out her blade, long and curved and protosteel-forged. It always served her well.

Her crystal grew into and around its handle, securing it in place at the end of her staff more securely than any nail or screw could ever hope to, and just like that, Zelvin had her trusty War Scythe in her hands once again. The handle of her Toa Tool being made out of crystal had been her choice, one she made to her own advantage and never regretted. It made it so much more responsive.

Zelvin approached the river, preferring to stay off the main road for now, and kept her gaze sent forward. Being of Crystal, her eyes were sharp, and with her mask they were even more so. Standing here near the river's source where it flowed down from the ice-capped summits of Ko-Wahi, she could see everything moving for Kio ahead of her.

IC: [Leah - The Great Takea]

The duo had spent the night so far asking every likely official contact if they’d registered any of the Matoran they were looking for, even splitting up again for a while to cover more ground, each in their preferred way.

“Any luck on your end?” Korero asked, reappearing in a flash. Leah shook her head, still glistening wet.

“Nothing yet.” she admitted.

Beyond confirming their arrival aboard the Yukanna, which they already could infer from what the empress had told them, neither Marine nor Menti could point them towards the exact group they were looking for so far. Disappointing - but not too surprising. Standout or not, back here a small group of Matoran probably looked more like helpers than new arrivals. Leah sighed, and with a fraction of her power absorbed the water clinging to her.

“I could use a snack and a drink. How about you?” she said, tilting her head towards the inn.

“Really?” Korero asked doubtfully.

“Sure. And we can ask them too while we’re here.”

She started towards the entrance.

“Besides, the food’s good - and they always serve it with a smile.”

She didn’t need to look back to notice the eyeroll.

Five minutes later they had two cups and snack bowls -  and the information jackpot: one of the Matoran - Lekua - had been confirmed sighted. And by sighted, the server explained, they meant: nearly crashed through the door from the back of a Kahu before making introductions to others in the establishment. No wonder that had stuck in the staff’s memory.

They had then proceeded to drink, chat - including with the empress and a dragon that had stopped by - before heading out with company - but not the other Matoran they were looking for. However…

“When they left here, they had a Toa with them…gray fellow with pearl armor, yellow eyes, wore what looked like a Mahiki I think.”

Leah raised an eyebrow. “Looking a bit anxious perhaps?” she asked. The server nodded. The Maru slapped her hand on the counter, flashed her brother a victorious smile and quietly thanked the great spirit.

“We met this morning! They’re a new arrival - the name’s Timak.”

[Aboard the Ruki (Yukie)]

“About as well as can be expected, Commodore,” Yukie replied, inclining his head respectfully.   “My people are not unused to living among vegetation.”

He paused for a moment.   This kind of communication, at least on behalf of the bulk of his clan, was unprecedented.  The Plangori ringti had kept for themselves for centuries—then again, this entire situation was unprecedented.

“…however, the journey was hard.  Many of our dyers had never left the compound before now.   They have been chased out of their home, with an army of demons on their heels, and thrust into an uncertain future.  Many feel…rootless, without purpose.” He looked back towards the forest.   “That is why I hope we will find someplace for them to put down.”

IC: Aeragot - Ga-Koro, Koro Outskirts

A second day in his less than favourite of the Koro had driven Aeragot out of a typically-verdant rooming house and towards solid ground. Of course, without leaving the Koro gates he couldn't quite reach it. Ga-Koro remained the floating city, its pride and its strength. Forget about Aeragot's stomach.

"Good morning!" a Ga-Matoran merchant called as Aeragot passed a stall. They had to be hawking wares, so Aeragot dismissed them with a wave on the way by. He said nothing. Misanthropic of him, he reflected once he had some distance.

Even when he passed a few Dasaka, talking in low voices among themselves, Aeragot didn't respond in kind to their watchful gazes. His eyes were glazed. He felt like something had been lost.

He had enough self-possession to know what was going on: Aeragot was bored. Yesterday had been exciting, and the point of comparison was making today even worse. He needed something to figure out, to pursue, to unravel. He wanted a mystery.

The first solved mystery of the day came quickly, albeit with little satisfaction. Having wandered down an alley, he followed a flight of unmarked stairs up to the second story of one of the Koro's great grown huts. He skulked through the door at the summit without even an "Ah-hah!" He had, as it turned out, discovered the mystery of the oddly-laid-out-tea-house. He entered through the back door, passing a kitchen and a stare from another Ga-Matoran, to emerge into the hut's central room. Kneeling at a low bench, as if he had intended to all along, he signalled to the proprietor for a drink.

This was something. Very little was hidden here, but it was something. There was time enough to decide on next steps.

IC: [Ayiwah - aboard the Ruki]

Ayiwah nodded reassuringly. “That is the plan, Toroshu. And it’s why this Koro must be built by our own hands. Both for purpose and to have a home…”

The commodore trailed off. She had meant to continue, to ask the clan leader to support a home shared by many if not all clans on the island while in exile - at least until they could retake the archipelago. But that little glint ahead up-river had drawn her attention.

If there was one thing Dasaka knew, it was the reflection of light upon crystal - like on the hilt of a staff. And in this jungle, that stood out - as did the figure on the riverbank that had just come into view around the next bend.

:Eyes up.:

The warning thought also contained the information of where the potential threat could be found. With Inzu at the helm, Koso moved forward, shielding the Dashi aboard, while Ayiwah turned to better cover the Toroshu.

IC: Zelvin (Hura-Mafa Riverbank)

The glint of sunlight reflected from crystal was of course a two-way street in this unique instance. Zelvin immediately suspected, and was even more convinced upon further inspection with her enhanced vision, that the group heading up the river was most likely a crew of these "Dasaka" that had been sending representatives and subsequently refugees arriving recently. She knew little about them, only that they apparently possessed strange powers of the mind, had an "empress" of sorts and something had driven them off their homeland. Still the crystal armor and weapons she could see surprised and intrigued her. Apparently she just hadn't heard that part yet.

She held back, and made sure not to present a threat. She planted her scythe in the grassy ground next to her, and stepped close to the riverbank that was becoming shallower where she stood anyway, and offered them a wave. Hopefully they weren't too hostile to the prospect of running into a local.

IC: Daijuno & Zyla | Aboard the Ruki, along the Hura-Mafa

It was hard to make out much about this figure - a tall, spare individual in armour of a nostalgically blue hue, gender unknown at this distance - save for the striking image of a person offering a friendly wave with one hand and gleaming scythe in the other. Daijuno supposed that it was not out of the question for there to be some kind of farmland nearby, unsanctioned as it might be have been by Miss Akiri Hahli. The alternative was much more unnerving.

"Well, four of you," she whispered, "one of them. Think we ought to stop for a chat? They might be from around here."
