A notch or two was not sufficient after the talk turned to Skyra’s affairs and Praggos’ complaint about his personal stock. The dial clicked down two more, and the noise around him faded further to something he could ignore without too much effort. There was no further need of him with the newcomer, so he turned towards the mast and paced around to the other side of that large wooden beam.

Despite his time aboard the Fowadi, and despite his desire always to pull his own weight, Krayn wasn’t much of a sailor. While the ship was underway his only responsibility was to stay out of the way and not fall overboard. Fortunately the deck was spacious enough that he could claim a little of it for himself to stand and try to run through some of the stretches that had been suggested to him. He had stopped briefly in Ko-Koro on his way in from the wilderness to consult a doctor; the ill-tempered man, after insisting that he could discern nothing wrong, prescribed a series of stretches and strength building exercises. All oriented around his shoulder, of course, and he detested doing them. They didn’t feel like they were doing any good.

The simplest was to brace his forearm against something to his side and gently ease himself forward, stretching the muscles in the process. He stopped when he felt resistance, almost instantly bordering on pain, and held the position. After a count of thirty he released it, waited, and repeated the process. On the fourth stretch pain shot through the joint as soon as he began, and he decided that would have to do for now.

The frustrating thing was that he couldn’t find anything wrong, either. That didn’t stop him from feeling the spot experimentally, as though he might find something below the faint scar that he hadn’t the first hundred times. He didn’t. The scar always seemed too small. It spoke to how well the healers had done their job that all that remained was a scar like a burn well healed by the passage of time. Of the wound that had required cauterization there was no sign. Medicine wasn’t his profession, but he’d had his share of experience with first aid in the field. With enough concentration he could learn about what was under the surface by feeling the way sound moved through the area. He hadn’t found anything that way, either.

Krayn sank to the deck, leaning back against the mast. He fixed his eyes on the sky and allowed his sixth, elemental sense to wander; even with his hearing reduced, sound was everywhere. It was only vibrations, after all, and a ship in motion produced so many. The footsteps of the crew, waves striking the hull when the water grew rough. The sources were innumerable, wherever energy was transferred between one body and another there was sound.

Paying attention to the soundscape was a much more relaxing prospect than musing over his shoulder yet again, so he allowed his mind to wander with his senses. If someone needed his attention, he would know.

OOC: Small Krayn post as I work to get back in the swing, others to follow elsewhere as needed and time allows.

IC: Jolek [Ta-Wahi, Fowadi Internals]

Although he'd drummed up his share of attention on the surface, Jolek nonetheless found himself taken a little aback at the bustle his shepherd had lead him into as they descended the hatch— for the conversation he'd kicked into gear up top, it quickly became apparent that the ironclad beast never slumbered as it slipped out of the Ta-Koro Bay and into the black of night. As tight as the corridors were, barely three of him apart at their broadest, in a matter of minutes he counted at least a dozen and a half faces milling past, purpose in their eyes only allowing them a quick glance at the gunmetal newcomer before they marched onto the task at hand— whatever it may have been. He couldn't delineate rank or uniform from one another in these foreign symbols, not at a glance, but whatever they were they permeated the air in a low roar.

He frowned, reminded of a base or three. Impressive regimentation, but it ran counter to the sales pitch. Whatever the big man had planned for him, it couldn't be all this.

Another thing stood out pretty readily, too.

His eyes slid over his right shoulder, meeting those that had planted themselves onto the back of his head from the jump. He wasn't a De-Toa like Krayn, and there was enough going on down here that the Matoran's dissonant stride hadn't been what'd clued him in. He was far removed from even pretending to be that good a hunter.

But a hunter's instincts still survived in him. A lot like the Forest, little more than a day prior, he'd more felt the eyes on him than heard or seen or smelled or any other type of sense. A gaze was like a weight on your back. Meeting hers, he definitely didn't discern any odd intent that'd undercut the general vibe of the welcome so far, but there wasn't any doubt it was on him. There was something tucked beneath her arm, but the sudden gloom once you got inside was even giving his night eyes trouble, more used to adjusting beneath canopy than steel. Only one thing left to do, then.

"So boss," he breathed, turning to the Po-Matoran ahead after a moment. "Is it normal for newbies to get tailed on the way in, or should we wait up on her?"

IC: Balian the Mask Maker - Pumice Pord's Pub

Work wasn't work when you enjoyed it. Every day was like vacation. Still, resting one's old Turaga joints by sliding into an armchair with a pint in hand was just as welcome at the end of the day.

"Ready ta ge' robbed blind again, lad?" he jibbed at the Ta-Matoran to his right. The other card-players at the table chuckled and joined in the pre-game smack talk. Some aimed for Balian, which he riposted with as good as he got.

IC: Makua (The Fowadi, Aft Deck)

The stars seemed brighter than normal that night. Or maybe Makua was new to looking up. Either way, the solemn reminder of the vastness of this universe gave the Toa of Ice some pause.

Makua stifled a chuckle at his momentary bout of daydreaming. But something about the rhythmic work of the crew as the set sail from the sure seemed to put him in a bit of a lull.

Even with the movement of the ship and all the discussions going on, he had not missed the newcomer “boarding” the Fowadi. Makua had wanted to say something snarky, but heck—here he was on this ship too.

And he’d paid.

"Particularly funny?"

Even stifled, he could hear the chuckle fine. The Toa— Makua, he'd said?— had even less to do than Krayn did while the ship was underway. He'd had enough silence in Ko-Wahi, and enough revelations here. Even small talk beat the silence, or Skyra and Praggos' bickering.

So, Krayn thought, he might as well ask.

IC: Rynekk | On the aft deck of the Fowadi

Rynekk really should have been catching some sleep right now, while the ship was self-sustaining and the weather was in their favour. He had been on the road for the better part of the last week to get from Ko-Koro to Ostia to regroup with his friends - a journey that, he admitted, his sister would have thought was foolish, considering his Great Mask of Speed. But then, as now, he needed things to keep himself busy. Keep himself distracted from--

-̴̼̩̏-̴͎̦̄ỳ̴̠͂o̴̤͋u̵̦̘͘ ̵͖̍́͜s̷̗̗͆̑h̵͙͚̓o̴̟̙͂͂u̶͙̓̈́l̷̹͙͗d̸̉͌͜ ̸̬̔h̶͙̪̓a̶̲̳͌̍v̷͙̯̚͝è̴̺͘ ̴̠̆s̶͚͂ä̷̗́i̵̢̘͠d̶̼͋ ̷̬̂̀ḡ̴͎̻̈́o̵̫̚o̸̯̟͂͝ď̶̯͌ḅ̸̎͝y̵͉͊e̷͈̝͋̽ ̴̡̘͆t̸̳̏͝o̸͑ͅ ̸̫̋͑ḥ̴͂e̵͎͒̌ŗ̶̞̓-̵̨̡̈́-̸̛̲̖̚

--so, rather than sleeping, Rynekk found himself on the aft deck, mop in hand, swabbing. No one had asked him to do it, but he had found the mop while showing Tekmo around earlier, and making a bucket from stone was so great feat. Up ahead, out of the corner of his eye, he could see Krayn and one of their newest passengers, Makua, begin to jaw. It did not take a Toa of Sonics to overhear much of their conversation, either.

[Offshore, The Fowadi (Talli)]

The Toa locked eyes with her for a second, before saying something to the matoran leading him that she couldn't quite hear.

She sped up her pace, hoping to catch them before the toa had some sort of interview--or whatever the captain was planning on putting him through.

"Hey!" she spoke loudly, not quite enough to be a yell.   Standard sailor voice when dealing with the background noise of a boat.  "Got something of yours!"

As she sped up, he in turn slowed... then stopped, his eyes having adjusted as their course brought the three of them in towards the proper, stark lighting of the interior and not the dim, warm hues of weak lightstone. Revealed within the crook of her arm, the dull fabric of his pack caught the eye, and he quickly put together that he'd never actually picked it back up when he'd first set it down—

"Oh, thanks." he replied, reaching out as she drew close. "Didn't even realize, things were moving pretty quick once the rock started talking to me. I don't remember getting your name up top, did I?"

IC: Skyra Daring - Fowadi - Aft Deck -

Sometimes silence was far louder than words. A half empty bottle of liquor than I had borrowed from somewhere lay next to me as I sat on the floor of the deck. I was keeping myself busy, sharping an assortment of weapons and tools with a whetstone. The price I paid for owning so many sharp objects.

"Hmmmm..." I examined the knife I had been sharpening a bit before putting it down and grabbing the bottle of liquor, taking a swig.

"This stuff tastes like shit."

Talli tried to school her face, but there was no way the toa could have missed the expression of surprise at him actually asking her name.  None of the rest of the boat had been quite as dismissive of anyone under a bio and half as Makua, but still—most of the toa held themselves apart.   She knew it was because they were longtime friends, but still.

She was trying to do better here.

“Uh, you’re welcome.   Galleyswoman Talli Anach.   Maybe next time be careful about where you chuck your sharp objects.”

IC: Rynekk | On the aft deck of the Fowadi

"Skyra, maybe you oughta--"

--not mix alcohol and sharp objects was almost what he said, barely catching himself. Although Rynekk had never been particularly close with Commander Daring - not in the way that he had been with Kale or Naona, and not the way that she had been with Krayn or Praggos - she had made her feelings on being told what to do by others more than clear enough to the world. He would have thought it a miracle that she had risen as far as she had in the Force, being who she was - but, he knew, it was a miracle that any of them had managed to do so. There were days when he suspected the very existence of the Aggressors was a kind of bizarre reassignment scheme on the part of the island's militaries: a quarantine zone for loose cannons who played by their own rules.

"--partake in a better class of drink," was what he actually said, reaching into a pocket of his cloak and tossing its contents to her: a quarter-pint bottle of salamander he had picked up during his supply-run with Brukin and Ember.

"They've really got you swabbing the decks, Rynekk?" Krayn asked, with enough humor in his voice to make the jest clear. He waved slightly with his good arm. "That just seems cruel. We didn't get to finish talking earlier, not with Pirok and the new guy showing up afterwards. You had something on  your mind?"

"Talli Anach," he repeated in a low murmur, exercising those still-underutilized pathways in the mind that put new faces and new names together. Her nonplussed expression didn't quite remain long enough to give him pause— Instead, he just accepted the likelihood that something he'd said in there was weird. Maybe she, like much of the rest of the crew, was already really used to the aforementioned little geode woman— and hearing her referred to as a talking rock was what had prompted the reaction. "Galleyswoman Talli Anach, got it."

Just as likely, it was having a wildman twice your height fumble over your name after you just handed it to him. Either way, a weird look was far less than it took for him to be dissuaded from a path he'd chosen. He'd weathered a lifetime's worth of them just in the time he'd wandered out the brush— they barely held meaning unless voiced.

"I'm Jolek. And next time, I won't be trying to race a ship already halfway out to sea, hopefully. Was the first thing I could think of to get this stuff aboard, didn't have time to second-guess it or fight the extra drag. If Krayn hadn't reeled me in, I'd probably have missed my window entirely." he admitted with a shrug and a tilt of the head. "Desperate measures. For a while there, I was pretty sure I'd kicked the Rama Hive, so I'm not really planning on rerunning it."

As he returned the knife to his person and close a fist around the mouth of the bundle that had been tied to it, a thought struck, sparking a little curiosity behind those uncertain gold eyes.

"How normal's all that around here, anyway? Thrown knives. Fishing up latecomers. Talking masks." he asked, waving his free hand about in an all-enveloping gesture. "Circling into people's blind spots when you're having a conversation. Seems like it's all everyday stuff for most of the people grilling me topside."

IC: Rynekk | On the aft deck of the Fowadi

"Need something to pass the time in-between folks swimming aboard," he said, a smile growing on his face. "And this far out to sea, I don't see us throwing down anytime soon."

He straightened his back as Krayn got closer; it was not even conscious. The ex-lieutenant's perfect posture was ######-near contagious - one of the curses of being friends with a paragon, Rynekk supposed. He would never admit it himself, but Krayn Inzaka cast a long shadow wherever he went. You wanted to live up to him.

"I... just wanted to make sure you were all right," he said, looking away. "I know that my orders were to run the island, update the rest of the Akiri on the Ko situation. And orders are orders, I know that much. But sometimes, at night...."

He looked up to the early morning sky, soft pink in sunrise, the stars dipping their heads behind the light. The words that had been stuck inside of him for the past month wanted to hide as well, but he supposed that it was to be now or never, as they say. It's what Krayn would do, he thought, even if he knew that was a lie - they were a pair in that sense, he supposed. Another couple of men incapable of talking about their feelings. No wonder you're so ###### fond of him.

"I just can't get over the feeling that I hadn't left, or I'd have gotten to Ko-Koro sooner, you mightn't have been... well, that things would've gone differently."

He looked over at the sea. His arm raised to wipe something from his face - perhaps they would assume it was salt spray.

"I'm sorry, I suppose," he said. "That's what I wanted to say before."

"Nothing to apologize for." Krayn said it lightly, but without so much as a hint of ambiguity. It wasn't a reprimand. Still it didn't allow an inch of room for argument, for the inevitable 'yes, but-' that would follow— because in Rynekk's place, he would have said the same thing. It was a common thread among them, the hazard of an uncommon standard. It was why Skyra jumped in to help the Maru. It was why Krayn acted to help her. It was why Kale had to be ordered to leave him behind, and why Dehkaz and Naona ignored the danger to rescue him when the odds said he was long dead already. They couldn't live with standing by when there was yet a ghost of a chance.

That, the feeling that he didn't try, was what was eating away at Rynekk.

"If you need forgiveness, you have it. Even Skyra has it, for being stupid," he raised his voice a little there to make sure she heard. "But nothing would've changed if you had been there."

"I may not be all right," Krayn grimaced slightly as conscious thought again made him aware of the dull ache in his shoulder, that he gestured to with his other hand. "but I'm alive. I didn't really expect it at the time. In extremis is a little overkill for self-reflection, but it got the job done. Alright?"

Rynekk grimaced, finished wiping away what was on his face -- "S'windy up on deck, yaknow?" was what he would say later on, when asked -- and turned back to Krayn. To say that a weight had been lifted from his shoulders would have been to misspeak, for it was far too soon for the gravity of what his friend had said to sink in. But there seemed to be a new energy in him; a touch of youthfulness too long gone in such a young man.

"Heh. You'll hate to hear me say it, Krayn," he said with the hint of a smile, "but the Force lost a ###### fine man when you left them. Bully to them that you're with us full-time now; 'cause you'd have a made a Karz of a Captain for them, you hear me?"

I caught the bottle as Rynekk tossed it to me, even after a few drinks my reaction time was unmatched. My mask might have helped a bit with that.

With a nod to Rynekk, I put the ****** I had been drinking to the side and started to nurse the new bottle. I chose to simply listen to the conversation as I continued my weapon maintenance while I drank here and there. I winced slightly at Krayn's mention of my stupidity, I couldn't even be mad cause well, it was fair enough.

I few weeks ago, Talli would have kept going, let this toa know how much his missing the boat was worth in comparison to the lives of people on board.  But…no one had died.  Maybe, maybe this wasn’t worth it.

“Oh, the lieutenant’s mask?  I think that’s the only talking mask on the boat.  I guess…this boat is supposed to be for the people that don’t fit with standard operating procedure.”

She frowned.

"…hey, maybe you’ll fit in.  Also don’t know what you mean by the last one.”

He found himself mirroring her frown, then glanced down the hall, past the old Po-Matoran patiently waiting to return to shepherding him forth into the depths, and into the distance beyond. "Then I guess that explains what the Recruitment Pitch ended up being. 'There is another path'." he echoed, the vaguest affectation of Dehkaz's clipped, frosty Ko-Koro accent coloring his contemplative tone.

At his side, a free hand twitched, ready to close once more into a fist. He stilled it with a huff, then looked back down as he registered the second part of what she said.

"Eh..." he hedged, busying his hands with extricating the knife and pack from one another and shrugging his shoulders. "The Le-Toa, Skyra, just made a point of circling behind me while I had my eyes on Krayn. That's all. Not a big deal in the long run since she wasn't really fishing for the angle, but it made things tense when she said they oughta throw me back." he muttered, still a touch annoyed but reserving it for his own time, trying to bury it under reason. "Don't like being penned in or feeling eyes on the back of my head, it reminds me of getting stalked in Le-Wahi. Can't complain though, I threw the knife at you guys anyway. It was on the table."

"Maybe," he allowed with a lopsided shrug. "Maybe it'd be different, if I was there now. That's not exactly the same 'me' that resigned, though, is it? Lot's happened since then. World isn't the same, either. When I resigned I intended it to be retirement. Couldn't stick with that even before Ko-Koro, though. I might just have to face that I'm not built for it."

"Anyway," Krayn continued, with something like a grin crossing his face. "Captains have to be able to do 'inspirational', and I'm not so good at that. If you really feel like you have to make amends somehow, you can provide the alibi if I ever find the airman that dropped that particular fruit on me. Fair?"

Talli had met her fair share of infuriating people in her life, but this toa was a special case.   At least Makua acted how she expected toa to.   Jolek was irritatingly normal. Or maybe he’s just an idiot.

That was the most upsetting conclusion, because if he was just stupid, he could learn, and become just like the other toa on this ship.

“Yeah, you did.   Skyra cares a lot about her friends on this ship.   Just don’t do anything like throw a knife into a bunch of people again.” She peered at the Po-matoran guide, who was clearly annoyed at being interrupted.  “Anyway, I should be getting back to the galley, and you should be talking to the captain.  See you at breakfast.”

Alcohol in hand, she turned and walked down the opposite corridor.

"Be seeing you, Talli." he replied, watching her shorter frame for a moment as she turned and left. In spite of the fact that she clearly seemed somewhat dissatisfied by... well, whatever it was she found within their short talk, she was a helpful sort. Thoughtful enough to spot that he'd left something behind even after the clamor. He owed her on that much— she seemed a good person. The type that kept you honest. Though putting his head to it, he wasn't sure he agreed with her assessment of Skyra's theatrics.

Certainly didn't feel like she cared too much to him. About anything. Rules, What Luten Was, The Doctor—

You made yourself known by chucking a knife our way, son?” The Po-Matoran asked, his bewildered amusement behind a raised eyebrow. “What a handful it is I've been asked to ferry over.

But he had just arrived here. And he was no genius at reading people deeper than threat. There was all sorts of reasons he could have been wrong. That much he knew well, by now. Returning his gaze to the Po-Matoran ahead, he stiffly nodded as the wizened one motioned him further along.

"Yeah... Like I said, I wasn't thinking after 'gotta get this stuff over there so I can have a chance to make the swim', so I just sent it."

Well. It makes for quite the first impression, but people here are very protective of their own.” his guide intoned, nodding and accepting the reasoning as the haste and folly of youth unbound. “And the galleyswoman is one of them. Many of us have lost close friends, families, even our loved ones in the time we've served here. The siege of Ko-Koro was just the most recent one in a lot of their heads, but the war on the dark's a long one for us all. If the Captain's recruited you into it, then he trusts you won't be a further danger than the ones we already face.

"I won't be throwing knives at people." he reiterated.

That, or he trusts he can whip you into shape until you're not. You say something? It's quite loud for these old ears sometimes.

There was a mischievous gleam in his eyes. One Highwind couldn't help but stiffen, just a little, at. He'd seen the same in Krayn's not ten minutes prior.

"...No, sir."

C'mon, then. Time's a wasting.

"I'll see what I can do," Rynekk said, the ghost of a smile on his face. "But until then, maybe you could fill me in on what precisely's the plan with this voyage into the unknown. Spirit knows that I'd follow you all anywhere, but what exactly are we after?"

"I'm happy to say it isn't my responsibility to know." Krayn's smile faded a little, thinking back on the events of the last day and a half. The refugee fleet, that freak that attacked Leah Maru... "If Dehkaz has a specific plan, he hasn't told me. I can read between the lines a little, though, and I don't think he's planning to wait for Makuta to strike. I think he's looking to go pick a fight in the Kentoku Archipelago."

"Wish I knew a little more about how he returned, avoid making that mistake again. I'd be happier, too, if anyone had any idea where the Nightfall guys scattered to. Only Echelon's off the board."

On this eve, the thirtieth anniversary of that first colony, many are left to wonder; is the world fast approaching a breaking point?

"I get the feeling that the Nightfall aren't the type of bad guys to stay hidden for too long, I bet we'll be seeing them again soon enough. We just gotta stomp them to the curb when we do." I took another swig of my drink.

"And I don't know if I'd count the Necromancer out just yet either," he added. "We all thought that he was dead once before, and look how that turned out. But I take it you didn't get anything out of Leah Maru? I seem to recall you and Kale had gone off to meet with her about... the present situation."
