IC: Salwa (Precipere)

I frowned, something that, fortunately, my helmet mostly hid from my leader. I wanted to just excuse myself and pretend like this conversation never happened, but that wasn't going to help anyone. I could feel a hole being burned into my neck as I imagined what my cousin would say if he saw me like this...

"Our scouts and hunters will need to leave the village for some time anyway," I answered, "our hunting routes need to be retraced, we need to get a sense of how the lay of the land has changed, and we need people out there who can get some sense of what we're up against if we're hoping to keep ourselves safe"

IC: Lutenus (Atero, Red Star Inn) - A Series of Unfortunate Events

“Oh, have you not heard? It was my understanding that everyone had heard - all contact with Ferrum has been lost. That leaves only us, Tajun and Vulcanus - smaller tribes don’t have much chance of winning the Games as a whole. Now, I don’t want to commit to saying that Roxtus or Iconox are responsible, or even that we should write off the Iron Tribe just yet… but it’s rather unfortunate that this happens alongside everything else.

IC: Taldrix (Bone Hunter Stronghold, Outside Somnii’s Cell) - Clerical Error

I see. Taldrix’s eyes turned to this ‘Aula Agoria’ in her cell, before returning to meet Crucius’ gaze. “Was there anything else you wanted?”

IC: Lorqua - Red Star Inn

She raised her brows. Lutenus was clearly a real patriot, a type of person for whom Lorqua had little time, but altogether he made sense. It was seeming a little too big to write off as simply fearmongering.

"I'd overheard some people saying some strange things, but nothing explicit. I've been a little out of the loop, this past month or so. Been working as a hired blade on a caravan. Caravan that ended up getting delayed, just got in to Atero this morning."

Lorqua gave another sigh, and shook her head.

"Yeah alright, seems like something's going down. So what, you're just going around and drumming up support with every Tesaran you can find? I'm not deceiving myself into thinking my arena record is anything special, so I can't have been top of your list."

IC: Xyde (Precipere, Guardhouse) - Ashes to Ashes…

They sighed, and braced themself for what came next. “OK, so… I didn’t get the herbs I told you were absolutely necessary that I leave the village for. How has your day been?”

5 hours ago, Geardirector said:

IC: Salwa (Precipere)

"Our scouts and hunters will need to leave the village for some time anyway," I answered, "our hunting routes need to be retraced, we need to get a sense of how the lay of the land has changed, and we need people out there who can get some sense of what we're up against if we're hoping to keep ourselves safe"

IC: Somok - Precipere (Guardhouse)

He cast only a sparing glance towards Xyde as they arrived. The admission of failure was irritating (but not unexpected under the current circumstances), but seeing that another of his wandering villagers had returned home safely brought comfort enough to Somok to overcome his disappointment.

"There is much that needs to be done," he nodded in agreeance with Salwa's words, "But I don't want anyone travelling out there alone right now, and I can't be diverting entire groups of scouts and hunters from their duties..."

His perpetual frown deepened further as he found himself being forced to consider the one obvious solution he'd been so desperately hoping to avoid. "Vulcanus will undoubtedly be sending a party to investigate Ferrum... they could use a guide to traverse the canyon, and perhaps even a healer," he pointed to Salwa and Xyde, "Travelling with them would be safer for you, and if you were to assist them it would give them less cause to suspect us in whatever misfortune may have befallen the Iron Tribe."

IC: Lutenus (Atero, Red Star Inn) - Room for Negotiation

“Not just Tesarans. I’ve tried to get Vraek of Iconox to see the consequences of what will happen if her tribe wins, but… well, I suppose I too wouldn’t take well to someone telling me to abandon my tribe, even as a temporary measure.” Lutenus could tell he was losing Lorqua.

“Tell me… what would it take to convince you to come back to yours?

@oncertainty

IC: Xyde (Precipere, Guardhouse) - I Literally Just Got Back but OK

“As you say, sir. I heard some rumour of sorts during my venture, which is why I’ve come back empty-handed. Fortunately, I haven’t unpacked anything from the wagon, so I’m already set to go.”

Though truth be told, Xyde had been rather looking forward to resting a short while in their home, numb and stiff from sitting down on the wood of their wagon all day. Still, if people were in danger…

IC: Lorqua - Red Star Inn

Lorqua smiled. It was a pleasant question to be asked, and the fact that Lutenus was asking it meant he might have more pull in Tesara than she would have expected. What would it take for her to fight in the games? It was what a Glatorian was supposed to do anyway; some credit to Lutenus, it seemed that he had recognized that a lecture about duty wasn't going to get very far with her.

Her gaze grew far off, only for a matter of fractions of a second. She looked past Lutenus, past the crowds in the Red Star, and saw in her mind out into the endless sea of dunes. Possibility itself opened before her, in the form of a yawning portal. A door, a gateway, an opening half-buried in the sand. Treasures of long-gone civilizations would surely lie within.

And then she was back in the room. She rubbed the bottom of her chin with the pad of her thumb.

"Well see, uh, the way I really think I can do something for the tribe is if I could get Tesara to start funding more expeditions into the desert. Looking for ruins, stuff the Great Beings left behind, that kind of thing. I think I could do a lot of good, being a part of that. I recognize, though, that archaeology is pretty low on Tesara's priorities in times like these. So if I do my part to keep us from—"

She didn't really want to say the word. It was an ugly word, better avoided.

"—getting into a war, maybe you can see if you can help me with that?"

She was still smiling. A winning grin, she hoped.

IC: ????? - Red Star Inn, Atero

On 2/14/2023 at 4:20 AM, Toru Nui said:

“Would you… care for a drink?”

The Glatorian's unrelenting gaze slowly left the Agori and came to rest down on the cup placed in front of them. The colour of the fluid within wasn't as vibrant as their fruit drink, nor was the smell as pleasant. Still, a drink offered was not to be denied.

The Iron Tribal slowly lifted the cup, peering into its murky brown. "to be savoured, enjoyed," they spoke blankly to no one in particular, certainly not their new companion. They took a sip.

Immediately it was far more bitter than the last drink, a flavour that sat heavy on the tongue and wasn't in a hurry to leave. The tiny taste gave off a strange warmth however, one that wasn't entirely unpleasant. A furrowed brow and another experimental sip, and it was decided. The Glatorian put the cup down on the bar and did not regard it further, instead returning their gaze to the nervous Agori. Chicken, round two.

On 2/16/2023 at 7:33 AM, Snelly said:

"Sounds good."

Before he turned to lead the driver to the bar, Ahmoa leaned in close and lowered his voice to a hush. "A word of warning. Our companion, your passenger is... how to put this delicately... not entirely present. They were at death's door when we took them in and we're not sure how far they've been able to return from there."

"We had to teach them how to eat, is what we're getting at." Mard interrupted.

"Whatever the cause," the crimson guard continued, pointedly ignoring his partner's interjection, "we must request a... gentle touch. Drive as fast as required, by all means, but please exercise patience as well. They are a fast learner, and I'm sure they will make for an excellent travelling companion." Ahmoa attempted to give a reassuring smile.

On 2/16/2023 at 12:48 PM, Morgan Yu said:

"Tajun...there...what happens?"

Mard blinked back, maybe trying to see if they could match wavelengths or some such. "Broadly, the upcoming Exhibition Matches. Our friend needs to 'find Celrys' there, though. Don't know why. Gives me the creeps, if you ask me."

"I can't say I'm especially comfortable with the man either. But it's all we have to go on, truth be told." Again he looked to the driver. "If you've any questions we'd be happy to try and field them once introductions have been made." With that, the two Agori began to lead the two Glatorians towards their charge.

"On the topic of introductions, I'm Ahmoa, guardsman extraordinaire," the Fire Agori declared, turning and giving a little bow.

"Mard, guardsman average," the Jungle Agori declared, turning and giving a little salute and a cheeky grin. Feeling a little more relaxed around the strange pink one, he quizzed "and she said you were Karak, right?"

Skyra had raised an eyebrow at the whole being taught how to eat thing, but she quickly grinned after. "Sure, I can be gentle. I have the gentle touch of a woman after all." This was not true. Skyra stretched her arms before standing up.

"Alright, introduce me then. I'll decide what I need to charge for this whole thing after that." Skyra believed her rates to be rather reasonable, but of course if this guy was gonna be extra work than the usual passenger she was gonna need a bit more.

IC: Dornak and Lutenus (Atero, Red Star Inn) - An Unexpected Answer

OK, this had stopped being scary and was now getting ridiculous - what was their problem, exactly?

“I just, uh - wondered, if you knew anything about… whatever happened to Ferrum?” Dornak inquired, hesitantly. General social anxiety aside, this was a sensitive topic.

Both of Lutenus’ eyes widened at the mention of funding expeditions. “Of course - the recovery of Great Being technology should always be one of our priorities, when we can.” Recovering it before anyone else did, anyhow.

Wondering what would be the best way to actually honour this promise, Lutenus asked another question. “I must say though, I wasn’t expecting that to be your condition. I take it you’re interested in the subject of Great Beings? I’m more of an Element Lord man, myself…” He trailed off, inviting Lorqua to speak further on the subject.

Skrall stood frozen for a second, leg still raised, held right where the training dummy in front of her had crumpled under the sequence of blows and kicks. The only thing moving were rivulets of sweat. Then, deliberately slow and with great control, she assumed a ready stance again, before finally relaxing her shoulders.

Without looking away from the ruined once-vaguely-glatorian-shaped heap at her feet, her hand found the canteen strapped to her belt and she took a swig. It was warm as usual. But it beat death by thirst. She preferred live training - to fight against someone who could react. But that was hard to come by - except as punishment. Sometimes for her - mostly for others that would rather avoid her.

But not for much longer.

Tirveus wanted skrall champions in the glatorian arenas, so he would send skrall to fight.

She would be among them, no matter what.

She would earn her place.

IC: Wolf (Atero; Red Star Inn)

Wolf narrowed her eyes. "Not if I can help it."

Not far from where they sat, she heard mention of Tajun; her gaze flicked toward the speakers. Multiple Glatorian already, and that ******able cab-driver. No need for her services.

That woman would put escorts like Wolf out of business.

IC: Crucius (Bone Hunter Fortress; Somnii's Cell)

"Yes, in fact, though I would prefer not to discuss it here. Walk with me."

He turned his back on the other two Agori, leaving the room without the slightest doubt he would be followed.

IC: Lorqua - Red Star Inn

Lorqua blinked. Lutenus looked incredulous. However, it wasn't a flat-out 'no,' so things could be worse. It took her half a second to realize he was waiting for her to say more.

"Well of course the Element Lords are fascinating, don't get me wrong. It's really just all of that history out there. Our inheritance. Or, at least, it ought to be; we just have to reach out and take it."

She had a far-off look again, but she continued speaking.

"I hope you won't take this the wrong way. Like I said, I have as much loyalty as anyone—"

Well maybe less than anyone. It wasn't that Lorqua didn't have a certain affection for her home village, but that it seemed small to think in those terms. If Lutenus was right about Roxtus and Iconox, that they were trying to shore up hegemony, that wasn't a problem simply for Tesara's sake. Lorqua had no intention of being made a slave, and that had nothing to do with her tribal affiliation.

"—but there's something to be said for what's left of somewhere that isn't here. I like to catch a glimpse of another time and place. And I like mysteries. Enough of those out in the desert for a lifetime."

She took a breath.

"Speaking of, if nobody's heard from Ferrum, are we sending people out to check things out?"

IC: Skrall - Roxtus (Outside Barracks)

A passing Skrall had caught the tail end of the one-sided beatdown, watching for a few seconds before approaching the combatant who was still standing.

“This one didn’t put up much of a fight,” he observed, regarding the crumpled dummy for a moment more before focusing on the warrior who'd felled it, “But I wouldn’t expect much better from the Southerners we’ll soon face.”

IC: ????? - Red Star Inn, Atero

12 hours ago, Snelly said:

"Alright, introduce me then. I'll decide what I need to charge for this whole thing after that."

"But of course, I understand this may be a less... straightforward job than you're used to." Ahmoa paused, another small but important detail crossing his mind.

"Continuing on the subject of introductions, there is a small matter... we don't know our friend's name." The guard smiled a little sheepishly.

"Not that we haven't asked! We're great caretakers!" Mard opined. "It's just... they don't talk much, and we ain't sure they get what they're saying when they do talk."

Ahmoa clicked his fingers in a 'eureka' moment. "As I said, they have been an incredibly swift learner. If I might make another small request, I wonder if perhaps making your own introduction will not only build rapport, but help them to understand the significance of a name."

"We think they miiight be starting to get the hang of us two, maybe a bigger sample size will help." It was the most academic thing Mard had posited for a good long while, the significance of the occasion lost on him as he shrugged in a suitably 'I'unno' fashion.

3 hours ago, Morgan Yu said:

"...Tajun...has arena, yes? Skrall…be there?"

"Pro'ly, they almost always show for the big events." Mard responded, holding his shrug. His shoulders quickly tensed as he read Karak's expression; violence swimming behind his eyes. He held his tongue now, thinking better than to ask if the pink Glatorian was a fan of Skrall or not.

8 hours ago, Toru Nui said:

“I just, uh - wondered, if you knew anything about… whatever happened to Ferrum?”

Ferrum.

There was that voice in their head again, clear as anyone else's in the Red Star.

I broke quarantine, got us out of Ferrum.

Before now the voice, the words it spoke, had just been meaningless sounds; by and large they still were. The words the Iron Glatorian spoke were similarly mindless, simple word associations based on what those around them had said.

But something was beginning to happen. Something was changing. Connections were forming, the language centres of their brain as little exercised as their vocal cords were stirring, quietly buzzing.

And the words inched just the tiniest bit closer to meaning something.

"i broke quarantine."

The Glatorian sounded the sentence out a little slower than prior vocalisations, and the Agori may have seen something like effort cross their face. There was a minute amount of thought behind their murmuring.

"got us out of ferrum."

She noticed the other skrall’s approach with her peripheral vision. First instinct was to expect a challenge or some other kind of confrontation. A challenge would’ve been a nice surprise. But he spoke instead. So he was going. Allies in cause then, but rivals in glory.

“Probably not. But they might try.”

She stepped over to where she’d put down her pack and other weapons, strapping the former to her belt again before retrieving the latter. Sword and shield returned to her back. Easier to carry and useful in an ambush. No one liked a thornax in the back.

“They’re a free people still. Free to make such mistakes.”

Returning to the training dummy, she stepped on the remains. The actuators in her crampons clamped down like a vice and she tossed what was left of the thing over to where one of the indentured was busy sorting supplies. It landed in a cloud of dust that engulfed the agori.

“Get that fixed.”

He scoffed at the other warrior's words.

The Southerners were a spoiled people. They were named from birth, had resources in abundance, yet they still squabbled amongst themselves instead of working as one like the Skrall did. That their cities and settlements had stood for so long defied all logic.

"Freedom is wasted on those without something meaningful to fight for," he replied, "You strike me as one who knows its value."

She nodded, head tilted slightly.

“It depends. If it can be taken: nothing at all.”

She shrugged, turned and began to head towards the barracks. She was getting hungry. And  there were preparations to be made. A map was needed. There were caravan routes to study and scout out. Check what transports could traverse them and what was available to begin with. Alternate paths if a passage was blocked. Knowledge was a weapon too. One she’d use if they tried to sideline her from going. It wouldn’t be the first time. Oh yes, she knew what she was fighting for.

She glanced back to see if the other skrall was following or not.

Perhaps against his better judgement, he did follow.

It was an inevitability that at some point in the tournament, only Skrall would be left standing. Not all of them, certainly. But this warrior, training alone while others rested and awaited their orders, was the only one he'd seen so far who demonstrated the drive and determination to make it that far.

The Southerners had the benefit of regularly fighting in their arenas to observe one another. The only contenders Skrall could learn more about before the tournament began were his own kin.

"I have." She took another sip of her drink. "It is."

Iconox was a place she preferred to avoid, the Bone Hunter presence from there to Gatherer's Ridge being disconcertingly strong. Even if her drinking companion couldn't, most Bone Hunters would recognise a Serrat on sight.

She entered the barracks and made her way over to the ration point, followed by the collective side-eye of the warriors that knew her for what she was. The skrall behind the ration counter was a hulking spec-ops fighter. Food came very shortly behind exsidian on the list of valuables in a village, so there was plenty of focus on ensuring it did not go missing.

Since the other skrall was still with her, she held up two fingers to the spec-ops, who produced two ration packs and put them on the counter in front of them.

She picked up hers, then headed over to the rally point for patrols, where a large map had been mounted on the wall.

“What do you know of the routes leading south?” she asked the other skrall, while unwrapping and breaking off a piece of something dry and spicy. Making it unperishable had made the texture vague, but she figured based on the taste that it had to be some kind of jerky.

IC: Dornak and Lutenus (Atero, Red Star Inn) - Scheduling Conflicts

“Q-q-quarantine?” Dornak repeated, nervously. Us? He also repeated, less nervously. “I-is there a… a plague?! The Fire Agori was now more afraid of whatever was happening in Ferrum than angering this stranger, hence his further questioning.

Meanwhile, Lutenus addressed Lorqua’s question. “I believe Vulcanus is set to handle it themselves - and given that I must be in Tajun fairly soon, there’s no room in my schedule to go see what’s happened down there for myself. You could go, of course, our arrangement is not yet set in stone, but as I say, the Fire Tribe should have it well in hand.” Should, anyway.

@Techn0geist @Snelly @Morgan Yu @oncertainty

IC: Skrall (Roxtus, Barracks) - Geography Lessons

There was another Skrall there, who seemed to be studying the map intently.

Iconox - technically could no longer be considered southern as it was now just west of the Skrall’s current stronghold in Roxtus. Head south-west to Elbow Peak and then north-west through the White Quartz Mountains.

Tesara - two villages that fought as one. In the same path as Iconox, but continue heading south-west at Elbow Peak.

Atero - the most unusual village, as it was not truly a village at all, Skrall did not know how to describe it, from what he had heard it belonged to all of the southerners, somehow. The geography of the Black Spike Mountains meant that one would have to head east out of Roxtus, and then follow the path of the Skrall River south-west.

Vulcanus - they willingly made their home near a volcano? Head through Atero and continue to follow the Skrall River for a time, then head south.

Ferrum - this one would prove perilous to reach, situated in the Iron Canyon, apparently difficult to traverse. How was any of this knowledge gained? He knew some of the southerners had made prior contact with them. Interrogation? Trade? Regardless. The curved path from Vulcanus around the volcano would minimise risk.

Tajun - the first of the southern villages to host their Games. The obvious path was to head south from Tesara through the Dunes of Treason… but that area was also known to be perilous. Was this true? Could the word of the southerners be trusted in these regards? Should it even matter? At what point did caution become cowardice?

There were other villages - but they were considered lesser by the southerners. It was unlikely that they would be selected to host the Games. May not even have the facilities to do so.

Skrall was so wrapped in thought, he did not seem to notice the others near him.

IC: Taldrix (Bone Hunter Stronghold, Outside Somnii’s Cell) - FAQ You, Crucius!

Taldrix followed Crucius, only briefly turning back to look upon the item as she left.

What precisely was going on? What had happened to the Iron village? What was the deal with keeping Somnii alive and anonymous? What did the Ghost want with her? Who was the Ghost? How fearsome was he, that he could keep someone like Crucius in line?

Perhaps she’d find out?

IC: Kestrel the Vagabond

Oh, the carvings. The carvings! I've scored so many star charts on this old home of mine, I'm surprised nobody asked sooner. Perhaps there is a chance to curry favor with an actual prime Glatorian here! Or at the very least, to trade for some of my charts or works.

There are worse things than currying favor with the greatest surgeons in the desert.

The amber glints within the figure's hood seemed to sparkle like the moons at sunset.

"Ahhhh… the carvings. Ashes saw Kestrel's pretty engravings." The hunchbacked agori giggled to itself madly. "Does Ashes ever look up? Up, up, at ribbons and fireflies and streamers all flyabout, hehe?" Suddenly, a hand shot out from beneath the cloak. It clamped over the Glatorian's own, its grip surprisingly sturdy. The three fingertips were like dull ebony, the hand itself felt like it was covered in a strange, plastic substance.

The mad little eyes twinkled brighter beneath the hood.

"Does it ever count the fireflies, Ashes? Does it listen to their stories? Does it even know they have them, Ashes?"

There was another feeling there, too. As though something was pressed between the trader's hand and the Glatorian's own. Not a weapon. But something thin and crumpled.

And still, those beady eyes gazed into Kehla's own. As if watching how she would respond. This whole exchange was played out hidden from the others on the street. The only indication that others would have would be from the madling's cackling, or the Glatorian's own reaction.

IC: Lorqua - Red Star Inn

It was tempting, to be sure. Whatever could make Ferrum drop contact entirely had to be worth paying attention to. And imagine being one of the first outsiders through the gates: were the Ferrumites all gone? Disappeared entirely? Or was there some reason they just weren't speaking to anyone? The mind boggled at the possibilities.

And yet.

"Well, I—"

Whether their arrangement was set in stone or not wasn't the point. Lorqua did what she said she was going to do.

"No, what you've been saying makes a lot of sense. I take it that exhibition matches are starting at Tajun, you have a plan for getting there? If things are getting as dangerous as you're saying, I'd sooner travel in numbers."

IC: Crucius (Bone Hunter Stronghold)

"A messenger bird arrived from Vulcanus; Metus is coming here, and I will have to leave with him." Crucius did not sound particularly pleased with this development, particularly in regard to their visitor. "I need two things from you: first, you must record the death by misadventure of Tera, who perished yesterday during a spice hunt. Her body was not recovered."

The cover-up was less than subtle – Taldrix had seen the Bone Hunter in question in the Stronghold just that morning. Tera was a member of Crucius' clan, one of those few to have actually seen the Ghost in person, and therefore something of a 'true believer' in His leadership.

IC: Skrall - Roxtus (Barracks)

"Their paths are unpaved and perilous," he observed, noting the abundance of skulls symbols on the map as he picked at his rations. "There's a route from Roxtus that branches off to Iconox and Tesara. I'm sure there are other routes known to those of us who have closer dealings with the other villages."

There was no shame in admitting his ignorance in this regard. They were all soldiers here, after all (including the third Skrall he could see nearby, also observing the map) Knowing where to go was the duty of a leader, and none of them were leaders. Yet.

"They're the same stars our ancestors once looked up at," she replied thoughtfully. "I'm sure they've seen more, know more, than any of us can even imagine... is that what the engravings are? The stories of the stars?"

IC: Karak - Red Star Inn

A vein throbs atop my forehead. A song beat out by my very own pulse. My fingers reach and clasp around the glass holding my drink - nowhere near cold enough. A sip for placebo.

Snapshot images splatter across my neurons. Some considered - not all. It is too hot in here.

Huracan sits tantalizing in the back of my head. Leaving this instant, alone, I could make it to Tajun in good time - provided reliable directions were acquired. I want to. I want to so strongly the thought begins to transform itself into a need. They'd be away from their territory as I was. It was perfect.

A bead of sweat arouses me from my strong delusion.

"You lead me. With quarry." I speak to Skyra with something akin to a gasp. I wet my lips.

IC: ????? - Red Star Inn, Atero

Before the panicky little Agori could muster another response from the Iron Tribal, they were interrupted by the arrival of the two guardsmen in the company of the Glatorians from outside, all unaware of the recent revelation. The puzzlement adorning their face vanished at once, their head snapping around to meet the quartet with a penetrating gaze.

<<Analysing scenario.>>

<<Mard. Ahmoa. Individuals from exterior. Forms relaxed. Ill-suited to combat. No present threat. Maintain awareness.>>

Ahmoa cleared his throat to get the Glatorian's attention. "Friend, Mard and I have found a driver who is willing to take you to Tajun." He turned to the driver, stepping aside and allowing her space. "I leave the floor to you, Miss...?" Realising they still didn't know her name either, he blushed a little at the informality.

Mard, meanwhile, moved past the Glatorian and leaned on the bar between them and the anxious Fire Agori, fixing him with a suspicious stare.

"And you are?"

IC/ Skrall/ Roxtus/ Barracks/

She studied the map and she listened to skrall. He had a point. However.

“Unless those you speak of have a better suggestion, we should still take it. It’s the most direct path. Bone hunters would be foolish to attack skrall, their trade relies on non-aggression with us.”

She considered the possibility. If the bone hunters attacked, it was all but a given they’d be wiped out in retaliation. Without the bone hunters, no more workers for Iconox, so no more exsidian for Bara Magna. She filed the thought away.

“That mainly leaves wildlife and vorox. If we can’t handle them, we are not skrall.”

“We could also make for the skrall river and follow it all the way to Atero directly.”

She glanced over at the other male that seemed to be equally interested in the map. Even more so, as he was seemingly paying no attention to them whatsoever. She wondered if he would speak up or remain with his thoughts.

IC: Skyra Daring - Red Star Inn  -

Skyra grinned and nodded to Karak, she had no problem leading him to Tajun if that's what he wished. Skyra approached the Iron Glatorian, sizing him up. He was pretty big, or was she just short? Whatever.

"Skyra Daring, the best driver you'll ever see." She winked. "I've heard you want to go to Tajun to find...Celrys, is that right?"

IC: Kestrel the Vagabond

Ah, sand blight. I know a few legends, both what Father passed onto me as well as some from my admittedly limited research. Zesk don't normally look at the sky. It saddens me sometimes. What legends died out with the minds of my kindred? What stories would have been written in my bones, if not for the cruel robbery of time and intellectual degeneration?

For a moment, something washed across the glowing eyes beneath the cloak. Like a ripple in a curtain, the eyes clouded slightly. As though, for a moment, they were looking into an entirely different world.

Then the moment was gone, and the vagabond was staring into Kehla's eyes with an unexpected intensity.

"Kestrel wishes she knew more." Her voice was quieter now. Its manic edge was dulled, just enough that her voice lost its ability to carry. What remained had been laced with an inexplicable melancholy. "So much lost. So, so much. Kestrel wishes she knew. But Kestrel has no stories. Agori never tell to madlings. Skrall would kill Kestrel. But Glatorian…"

Kestrel's eyes were boring into Kehla's now. Not a lunatic stare, or the leadup to some sort of episode. It was as though the veneer of madness had been pushed thin, so thin as to be almost invisible.

"Every night. Every night, Kestrel watches the stars. She charts them. Keeps their dances recorded. But stories…

"Stories she has precious few of. Find Kestrel tonight, Ashen one. Find her, and watch the stars with her. Bring her stories, yes? She will have offers in return. On her spirit, she will."

IC: Skrall - Roxtus Barracks

Skrall was displeased.

He had spent decades learning to be self-sufficient; to complete the tasks assigned to him with little to no help from others, because few others existed with the skills necessary to do the things he did. He had grown accustomed to going days at a time without ever seeing another glatorian, to never having to spare a thought to worrying whether the person beside him had his back, because there was rarely another person beside him.

But now their southward march would carry them across the desert to the Southern Lands, where Tirveus wished, for whatever reason, to see a Skrall be crowned champion of the Southerners' Great Tournament. And that was all well and good; it would benefit the Skrall for the Southerners to see their superiority laid bare. Skrall thought it unlikely that showing this superiority through sport of all things was likely to 'stick.' But that was not his place. Skrall did not question orders; he did, however, follow some more enthusiastically than others. He was very unenthusiastic about this one.

As he found himself joining a group of three Skrall soldiers standing around a map in the barracks, his lack of enthusiasm was obvious to any who knew of him. He looked upon the map of the desert with pursed lips and an appraising gaze which was occasionally turned toward the other Skrall, some of whom he recognized. The desert was too big and deadly to be crossed in its entirety alone, even by one as experienced as Skrall. He would have to cross it with others. Others like the flighty soldier who had earned no cybernetics; like the wiry glory hound with magnet hands. Others like the outcast female.

He was not optimistic.

"I would be cautious in following the river," he responded, noting as he did that yet another Skrall had joined them around the map, this one not a simple soldier, but a more inconspicuous figure draped in a brown cloak, "It might be an easier route, but everything in the desert needs water, including creatures much larger than us."

IC: Kehla - Tajun

"I... of course," she nodded, "Where do I meet you?"

Kehla wasn't well-versed in the ways of the world beyond her village, but she understood enough to know that this encounter was unusual. What had she gotten herself into by knocking on this door? And what had she just agreed to?

Despite the strangeness of the situation, her curiosity was piqued. She'd come to this city to learn more about the world, after all. It was only fair she tell some stories of her own in return.

IC: Skrall - Roxtus Barracks

Skrall chuckled darkly, an almost metallic sound that wormed its way out of oft disused vocal cords. "There's not been water in the Skrall River since long before you were birthed, pup. Why, I doubt even the General himself recalls the sight of water falling from the Dark Falls." He reached a hand out and traced the path of the sand river with a finger. "But, at least you're thinking logically. If it did have water in it, you'd have a point. As it stands, though, the Skrall River is one of the safer paths southward."

IC: Skrall - Roxtus (Barracks)

"Oh," he replied numbly, too embarrassed to even manage a comeback about it being a trick question, "Right." He'd been so fixated on trying to appear knowledgeable that he'd entirely forgotten the nature of the real geography the lines and colours on the map represented.

It didn't matter. None of this speculation did, given that the decision of where to go and what route to take there would likely be made by Tirveus.

If anything, Skrall's momentary mistake here perhaps offered him an advantage. The others now likely thought him a fool, and would underestimate his capabilities.
