As reported by Deadline this past week, Universal Pictures has announced three live action movies about LEGO bricks are currently being made. While additional details are scarce right now, we do know the directors and writers:
  • Directed by Jake Kasdan and written by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, based on an original idea and draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows
  • Directed by Patty Jenkins and written by Geoff Johns
  • Directed and written by Joe Cornish, rewriting from a draft by Heather Anne Campbell, which was off a treatment by Simon Rich
The article clearly states, 'live action,' which I'm very curious to learn more about, since we've yet to see any LEGO films that weren't animated.

This is hard to believe. It’s cool, but I hope the characters would look perfectly human rather than freakish in terms of looking like the mini-figures. I know Ninjago is going to have one of those movies.

I like Lego, Bionicle, and Hero Factory!:)

This just seems so strange to me. Until now, Lego has always seemed to understand that the live-action approach wasn't a good fit for their products.

The Galidor show didn't perform very well, and plans to put a human child in Mask of Light were very quickly shot down. Lego's various animated shows have generally been successful, The Lego Movie was fantastic, and while the movies that followed it weren't quite as well-received, this year's Piece by Piece shows that a film made using the Lego style can still be successful.

I can't fathom why they'd abandon the one thing that makes them unique to make a generic live-action movie, much less three of them. Especially if the rumours are true and one of those will be a Ninjago film, given that the previous Lego Ninjago film didn't do super well compared to the other Lego movies.

Agreed, if you told me 15 years ago I would be completely unenthused about more LEGO movies, I’d call you a kolhii-head, but here we are.
