fishers64
The baterra had been around since the Core War, but they suddenly appear to attack the Skrall, as if out of nowhere. They are machines programmed to kill anything armed; why the 100,000 year time delay between the Core War and them attacking the Skrall and forcing them south? Toa Smoke Monster
I'm not sure. Maybe they were offline during that 100,000 time span and something or someone activated them. That would be my guess. Makuta_of_Oz
Bara Magna, even after the Shattering, is a very big place. The baterra were probably very far away from the Black Spike Mountains when the shattering occured, and it could've taken them 101,000 years of slow travel to get to where the Skrall live. bonesiii
In all honesty it's probably just authorial guiding to have conflict for 2009 "conveniently".That said, coincidence is possible realistically, so if we accept the coincidental timing, any number of things might cause it. Not sure if any of these are officially contradicted (say if so), but maybe Skrall and Baterra had been struggling for all that time but the balance was finally lost as a cumulative thing, and the Skrall felt like "enough is enough" at that time.Could also be that Baterra do whole-group sweeps across the planet, and that just happened to be when the group had come around to the Skrall's territory at that time. Perhaps at other times they had as well but some of the above balance answer explains it, or perhaps Skrall hadn't happened to carry their weapons as much in past encounters.Or perhaps Skrall had been making more weapons, etc.If the timing is more than coincidence, perhaps some kind of connection, undiscovered so far, exists between the giant robot tech and other things the GBs made like Baterra, so the activity has gone up since Mata Nui (really Teridax) awakened, and previously Mata Nui spent most of his time either exploring other planets or unconscious on Aqua Magna, so it could be that only now have the Baterra been activated again. This does seem unlikely though. Toa of Italy
We know the GBs tried to shut down the Baterra at some point before the Shattering and we know they didn't succeed. But perhaps they did succeed with the Baterra closest to them (and the Black Spike Mountains are very close to the Valley of the Maze). So the ones left were very far from the Black Spikes and, as Makuta of Oz has said, Bara Magna is a big place and it might have taken them a lot of time to reach the Skrall. During that time, they might either have wandered aimlessly or slaughtered other settlements, which would also explain why the only Glatorian and Agori we find on Bara Magna are those we've seen in the main storyline. This does seem unlikely though.on that note, mabe the baterra were drawn to a predetermined landing site for the mu robot when it started awakening (or a predetermined time set for the landing by the GBs) and that would be relatively near the valley of the maze. but, another idea is that the GBs had another use for the baterra: to guard the landing site so if the war was still raging o the shattered moons, mata nui could land safely (same goes for alien attacks). that could worksince the GBs were obsessed with failsafes.
