Is 50 Too Much?

Um, er, yeah...

A little over a week left in Epic Contest #7, and I'm cranking out the chapters. I'm about into the big finale, because I'm writing this as an action story that's revolving around a mystery. Of course, it could use a lot of revision, and I still have a few chapters to finish up. But that's not the biggest problem.

This is. It's currently just over 50 pages long.

Yeah. On MS Word. 1 inch margins, 12 space font, Times New Roman.

My last contest entry, Kulagi's Kanoka, one of my better stories, evened out around 64 pages. Unfortunately, I still have a thrilling finale to write, as well as to finally solve the mystery in completion. So, at least, I'll be matching Kulagi's Kanoka in length, and most likely I'll be overshooting it.

I'm not worried about the judges here... let their eyes water as they try to finish it. :P But when it comes to voting, nobody's going to take the time to read an extra long story no matter how good it is. They'll either finish the shorter ones and vote for those, or only vote for mine based on my "reputation". But I don't like it when people do the latter. Now I'm not even sure if I'll enter this contest. Again, I wrote a novel for a story contest... why?

I may change my mind if I start seeing a bunch of other excessively long stories pop up. But I'm sure some people have mastered the ability to be "concise" and will max out around twenty. Oh well... it'll make for a cool epic after the contest is over, regardless.

Actually, mine got so long I decided not to even enter the contest, because there'd be no way I could finish it on time. :P

So you have to finish the whole story for the contest? A whole bunch of chapters (what? 20-30 maybe?) in a few weeks? (Though if you have 50 pages then I'd say anywhere from 10-17 chapters?) (3-5 page chapters?)

How long are epics normally that would make your 50 pages seem abnormal? Aren't epics supposed to be long? It's what separates them from the short stories.

At least you have time to write.

IMO, 50 is great for a story. I like long stories.

But generally, it's probably waaay too long for a normal voting member to want to read. They might see its length, and skip it altogether, if the judges even spent their time reading enough of it to decide to push it into the voting rounds. (And this does depend on the judges. Some absorb large amounts of story information better than others.)

On the other hand, quite a few members might start reading it, decide that 'you're talented' or 'this is good writing', then skim to the end to see the outcome, and vote on it that way.

Or they could read all of it. All of them.

Or, again like you said, the 'voting because of reputation' thing.

I'd say it's a tossup. If you're happy enough with your story, and you can present to us something 'finished' (even though you may intend to edit it later) then goshdarnit, enter! But if you have reservations about the story itself, or you're vehemently against 'voting by popularity' and you're afraid it'll be a problem, then don't enter.

Easy decision now, right? ;)

Good lord, I know I wouldn't take the time to read that. :P

You don't have to worry though, I don't plan on voting. :P
