"It's fascinating, really." A quick drabble by Xaeraz

It's fascinating, really. You can, quite honestly, say that you'd never experienced anything quite like this in your entire life. As you flip over the waves again, water sliding off your body in sheets, you just can't help but savor the taste of the sky. You slip beneath the surface again, grinning widely, and with little regard for the liquid slithering between your teeth and down, into your throat, and your stomach, and your lungs.

It's fascinating, really. Not three days ago, you were terrified of Pyramid Lake. The lake with no bottom. The lake where, your brother had assured you, the Great Old Ones slept. The lake you are cavorting in this instant.

It's fascinating, really. The lake had swallowed your parents so long ago, and your siblings after that, until you were the last one of your family. You, and your brother. You wonder what he would think of you now, playing in the waters that seemed to have it in for your family. You wonder for only an instant, for that's when the change overtakes you.

It's fascinating, really. Your skin sloughs off as you swim, leaving behind oily blue-black. Your hair shatters like a dropped christmas bulb, surrendering its place to teal tendrils. Your face chills, becoming the countenance of Death himself, a pallid, pale mask of seemingly sunken eyes and sharpened teeth. Your jaw slips under the black, only a few token fangs peering out like frightened fish to try and meet your canines above. Your body resolves itself again, the glimmer of a lantern fish shimmering down your sides as the black slides over your head at last, changing your face into a smooth sheet of ebony, the ivory of your bones flowing forth as designs.

It's fascinating, really. That such a transformation should come over you, without pain, without fear, without warning. To take a simple human, just as you once were, and make it this. To hold such power. To lurk within a body of water like this.

It's fascinating.

Really.
