The Old Republic

I seriously need to stop reading about this game, because I'm hovering over buying it and dealing with the subscription payments that I loathe so dearly.

I still can't work out how to justify $15 a month in order to play a game I already spent $50 on and might not even play that month - both from my perspective as the customer with not a lot of money, and the publisher's perspective about why they need to do it.

I hate Bioware at the same time I love them, for tempting me like this. They've made another beautiful game, this time it's bigger than ever, with online capability, and it's back in Star Wars, and it hurts not being able to hop in. :( I'm still able to push myself away from it though for the reasons stated above. Also because it's Windows-only right now, so I'd have to get a copy of Windows and install it in Bootcamp since it's an MMO and online games don't work in Wine, which would eat a lot of hard-drive space, and money I don't have since I bought a TV.

On that note, I managed to find a TV in my price range to replace my horrible, horrible, 20", 4:3, standard-resolution, CRT box of pain. Will post an entry about it once it's set up.

But yeah, Bioware's the kind of company I think will always do the best business; they don't have a lot of marketing or interviews or anything, they hide away working their product to perfection, then let the product speak for itself. And it speaks loudly, distinctly, and eloquently. And it hurts listening to it when I half-don't, half-do want to buy it. :(

From what I've read thus far you'll at least play it for a month.

But yeah, the monthly payments are terrible, especially for someone like me who doesn't have a stable income. I mean, from everything I've seen the game looks great and it's worth the initial 65 bucks.

Typically though MMOs come with, like, a free first month from what I understand. I know WoW did that; figured TOR would do that as well.

WoW, Aion, Age of Conan, RIFTS- it's pretty much standard for MMOs to come with a first month free of charge. As well the reason for the 15/month charge is server fees etc etc, with Steam it's all basically premade servers that have a set limit of (oh say 32 players) or home servers that can host as many people as the person wants with MMOs these are MASSIVE game files with a lot of RNG and interaction between players. For example, WoW, I used to play on a Californian server, that meant all my data had to be sent from my house in Florida to the data centers between me and the servers then to the servers and then to the data centers between my friends and the servers and finally to my friend's house. That eats up a LOT of data. So in all reality the 15 really is a fair charge especially for a game like The Old Republic or WoW that are legitimately as good as they come.
