Today in computer class

We learned how to be paranoid on the internet.

Such highlights include:

  • Don't use online banking
  • Don't use social networking
  • Always pay with cash
  • Don't have online e-mail
  • If you do use online banking, make sure it's from a desktop with a wired connection to a secure router
  • Don't have a smart phone
  • Don't do online transactions
  • Google ads are evil

And my favorite:

  • Use a mac, as they are obviously superior to windows based computers (This one gets thrown around a lot in the class)

And there was obviously a metric ton of trigger words, though some where genuine.

Most of this could be taken out and been replaced with:

  • Don't be stupid online

Some of the people in the class where legitimately mortified at was being said. It was almost sad.

There's being aware of the risks, and there's being paranoid to the point where you shun technology. I'd say it's a little sad that there are people teaching this kinda of stuff, but some of my college courses were also pro-Apple Anti-Windows, so I guess the bias just doesn't go away. (And then I had one business class where the prof said that iphones were for the technologically illeterate, which I find humorous even if it may not be 100% accurate.)
