BrickCon 2014 and Bionicle 2015

BrickCon happened last week. Due to certain complications, I was unsure whether I would attend or not, and so didn't register until Thursday, which was technically the first day of the con but the day before the exciting stuff started happening. Having missed last year due to being at university in Edmonton and a $500 plane ticket away, and seeing as I will likely be in the same situation next year, I simply could not let myself miss out this year, despite the fact that I'm not feeling my best these days. We (my mother and I, who was happy to spend the weekend exploring Seattle) drove down Friday afternoon and arrived that evening shortly before the opening ceremonies. All in all, it was a fantastic weekend; in addition to hanging out with xccj, Razlak, Arpy (who I admittedly haven't seen in five years), Kakaru, Kayru, kopakanui, and Roa as per usual, I met DeeVee, Janus, Hahli Husky, Nukaya, Makaru, Kughii, and GSR. Also, this marks the first con where I didn't spend any money whatsoever on Lego, having had registration and the hotel to pay for already and being otherwise short on cash. I've always had a sort of tradition of acquiring one large set at every con, which has caused me to amass an impressive collection of big models including the Death Star II (2005 version), Eiffel Tower (2007), and Tower Bridge; had I had $300 to spare I would have added the Sydney Opera House to that list.

On another note, although I have most definitely been on board the hype train (or bandwagon, according to Makaru) regarding Bionicle 2015 for a few months now, I haven't posted anything about it, but I guess that might as well change. Despite not being a fan of the Hero Factory building system - I find many of the the parts too simplistic and prefabricated, although I have seen some amazing stuff done with them - the new sets do look very nice. I'm glad they're bringing back the dual function weapons (maybe they'll even call them Toa tools like they used to? Doubt it though.) from the Toa Nuva days, and more than anything I must say I love the new Kanohi (I'm still calling them that, even if Lego doesn't). They're just reminiscent enough of the originals to have me bursting with nostalgia, but they have a decidedly different feel to them. A little disappointed about the attachment method, in that they aren't compatible with old heads; maybe an effort to find a mode of attachment would be a good excuse to get me back in MOCing.

Speaking of which, all the MOCs I brought to BrickCon this year have been around for more than two years. My goal for next year is to have some new stuff, including a large system model of Destiny from Stargate Universe (which was the best Stargate - bring on the haters) still in the planning stages.

'Till next time.
