Last Question Regarding Games

Tell me something, BZP members. Because I have these final questions, I therefore hope that I shall have no more. Fairly simple to answer.

  • What is your favourite game of all time, and why? What has come close to replace it at the top of the list? Has it replaced a game that used to be there? What areas does it excel in?

Last Bonus: What games underwhelmed you?

A lot of my entries seem to be asking questions, I should stop.

1. Too many to list, the 'favourite game' list changes way too much. =P

2. Hmm... Superman 64 is an obvious choice, but I'm pretty sure there's other games I'm just not thinking of.

Also, questions are nice. =P

I have many favorite games... I don't know if I have a single favorite one. But KI:U and Mark of the Ninja would probably top that list. But others include Metal Arms, the Bioshock games and pretty much everything Valve has made, Halo, Metroid, Pokemon... And there's more. Many more. Picking a single one is hard.

Underwhelming? Hm. Destiny.

I can never limit it down to one. It'd probably end up being one of Team Fortress 2, the Mass Effect trilogy, Wind Waker, Fire Emblem(Either the first GBA one or Path of Radiance) or Pokémon Ruby. It really depends on the criteria we're judging it by and what I'm looking for.

As far as disappointments, it's still too early to decide but Destiny is teetering there. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon is pretty high too, because it was so loyal a remake that it preserved all the flaws and shortcomings from the NES era.

I may get a lot of heat for this, but I'll also say Ocarina of Time. It was a great game, but it's tired now. I know that's because the ideas and concepts have been reiterated, improved, and refined for years, and that it was revolutionary at the time, but it just has not stood up to the test of time in my personal opinion. It's still a very good game, but not an earth-shattering experience.

My favorite game of all time would probably be Kingdom Hearts II, which is why I'm supremely stoked for the remaster in a few days. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep tends to jockey for first as well, but it's usually II. Regardless, in a few days, it's gonna be amaaaaazing.

I like the KH games because they contain just the right amount of everything; JRPG designs, RPG ability/support mechanics, action-oriented gameplay, surprisingly enjoyable plot, fantastic voice acting, and a fun art style, all wrapped up in a workable Disney package. Some of the later games have gotten a bit over the top (and the plot is currently bonkers), but it just hits all the right notes for me.

Underwhelming would probably be Pokemon: Black and White Versions. The plot was really hamfisted, the Gen V designs ranged from uninspired to downright awful, and the slight tweak in spriting and perspective really just did not sit well with me. Black 2 and White 2 were thankfully a lot better, and Gen VI proved that it was just a fluke in terms of creativity and playability.

1. Spider Solitaire

2. Bejeweled 2 Deluxe. Except it was too expensive.

3. Minesweeper.

4. HF Brain attack. It was the worst.

(Yes, I know this is talking about video games. But you didn't specify, so I'm going to stick my tongue out at this one because why not. :P)

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Good story, humorous dialogue, great characters, really good gameplay, and one of the first RPGs I ever played. Close second would have to be Dark Souls, for having all of those things (except the last one, though it is an RPG it's not one of my firsts), while also being one of the most challenging games I've ever played.
