Of Makeovers And Fashion - What?

A good friend of Mum's was chosen for a makeover on this lady-talkshow - and timely on the same episode about fashion. Mum went, and I followed her.

I don't think I should've. I finally understood why people say that 'if you're in fashion, you're glamarous - or you're insane'.

It was something like the Tyra Banks Show - just with a smaller capacity of audience. The wonders of camera angles from six cameras made our thirty-odd audience look like the whole studio's entire capacity.

And an hour-long show took more than three hours to shoot - mainly because of breaks, re-shooting, technical difficulties and delays of the production crew's ability to assess the footage.

But, it was informative, I had to admit. They tried to tell us, generally, what was 'in' and what wasn't. I determined, there and then, that I was fashion-blind, or I was in a fashion world of my own. They had Jimmy Choo's there that irked me, but they gushed that it was too cute to be true.

But the main highlight was my mum's friend's makeover, right? She was transformed far from recognition! I was literally surprised when she stepped onto the set. The jeans-and-white-tee wearer was in a red dress, with an onyx stone necklace draped on her neck and a large red waist-belt.

She looked like someone in her 40s, which was biologically correct, but she looked loud in her outfit.

While the A-team talked about her transformation, I looked at that dress.

I remembered that dress from somewhere.

Then it struck me.

I remember watching some red carpet procession at Hong Kong's movie awards. One of the movie awards, anyway. Can't remember which.

An actress was wearing the same coloured dress as Mum's friend, and/or vice versa.

I thought I had been fooled. If this makes the ordinary folk look like the celebrities, we wouldn't be pursuing the perfection of fashion. We'd be chasing each other.

To end off this rant, I won a bottle of Merdoc wine today - at the show. All I had to do was to listen to someone humming the tune of Outkast's Hey Ya and identify it.

Mum's Day Gift: Acquired and given.
