Just Why I'm Massively Losing Interest In Bionicle

- Icy J -

In the old days, Bionicle was great. The looks were what drew me to the sets and the unique storyline drew me to the...story.

Now that's changed.

Instead of having Ice blades and Magma swords, we have massive cannons that aren't much use in posing. Back then, when more or less no sets had these unsightly projectiles, you could actually make a Bionicle look like it was fighting. Now where have we gone? James Bond? Kopaka Newva's box illustration seems perfectly like that.

Where is the fun and interest in watching mechanoids blast away at each other with very little melee action? That was one of the things I liked about Bionicle in the past. Now, it's just a meaningless boom-boom-kaboom-I-win sort of thing.

Plus, I only have one word I can describe about the new sets, and that's 'disgusting'. Where has the coolness from earlier years gone? What's happened to brown? What's happened to the colours which represented the individual Toa? Why must we put up with hordes and hordes of grey and black, while other colours remain so scarce? Take Kopaka for example. He has nine white pieces. Nine. Out of what? Fifty-four. Nine white pieces on a Toa of Ice. Might as well call them Toa of the Black and White age.

Some might question my like of Gundam, which is even more about blasting and destroying than Bionicle. The fact is, I find Gundam storylines to be deeper and more interesting than Bionicle ones. The models look cooler, their weapons are cooler, and there's a stronger mystery to the series, from what I've watched.

Another issue bugging me is the complete lack of complexity. From '01-'04, it actually took a little while to build your sets. Now, it barely takes a minute or two. Compare that to a Gundam of similar pricing, but is much more complex and takes far longer to build. Bionicle sets now are just done in several steps;
1: Open box.
2: Dump pieces out.
2 1/2: Get instructions. Optional.
3: Snap joints in place.
4: Put on mask.
5: Done.

On one of my other hobbies (Gundam), however, the process is a lot more complicated;
1: Open box.
1 1/2: Arrange piece frames. Optional.
2: Open instuction manual. Required, unless you can tell the future.
3: Build the inner body, the outer body, the inner head, the outer head, the arm and the arm-armour.
4: Build the leg, then the leg armour. Then the inside of the waist, then the outside of the waist.
5: Assemble weapons.
It's actually a lot more complex, but I just shortened it to make it less tiring for my fingers. >>

I decided to blog this instead of post it because I didn't want to get dogged by people yelling at me to get off BZ if I don't like Bionicle anymore. What do they want, my PMship?

Same here, I agree with everything you said. Bionicle's just not the same. the villians and the toa have the same bodys. That's why I'm making my own storyline. Why can't bionicle just go back to the way it was...

Because of the dratted 'fanbase'. Apparently kids nowadays love stories where all the characters get blown up using massive, oversized cannons which are far too heavy for posing. And too simple to build.

You don't say. :P

Actually, back before the projectiles and the loss of the gear systems, posing was a nightmare. Much more so than now. Curse those floppy gears. :P

I personally have never had a problem with posing my figures with their projectile launchers.

Some people consider James Bond the height of coolness, you know. :P

And it wasn't before? Well, more like Smack, Slice, Dice, Fallover sound, I win. But you get the point.

Brown sold horribly. Always did. Bionicle did what they had to to avoid financial loss.

I can't deny the loss of color. But the Phantoka are selling incredibly well, so maybe there's something to having mostly grey Toa when it comes to the majority.

And that's all personal taste, which is fine.

And previous sets weren't? Also, remember, you're getting older. Things are going to be less complex to you now than they were seven years ago. Really.

The same steps can be applied to the previous clone sets as well. In fact, due to the rising non-clonism, sets have more variety amongst them.

And isn't Gundam aimed at an older target audience than Bionicle?

Your blog and cool rank images. I want them. Give them to me. :P

Honestly, though, I am disappointed when people do stuff like that...<_<

^Kid's got a point. Kops Olda has 6 white pieces, Kops Nuva has... 5 white pieces, and Kops Neva has 9. It's just the size of the pieces makes it look like there's more. :)

Yes, but that size counts. If it's larger white pieces, it will spread more white to the color scheme. Anyway, going by your count of white pieces in each incarnation vs. total set pieces, each incarnation has:

Kopaka Mata (the best IMO): ?18%

Kopaka Nuva (the second best IMO): ?12%, but each Nuva came with three extra pieces to cripple their arms for a pose, so it comes out as 12.5%

Kopaka Phantoka (my least favorite): ?17% (he may come with some extra pieces, but I don't know)

So Kopaka has the best ratio so far, with the Phantoka in second and Nuva in third.

*Friends hold back Eranok who is enraged* Gah! Must take anger out on pillow...

Why must so many lttle kids make up the fanbase, if more older kids made up the fanbase BIONICLE would be more darker and my style because I think that's what a lot of people want, Raise hand if you want BIONICLE darker. *raises hand*

Admittedly, that is true, but the size of the pieces are much larger, making it look whiter. Plus, Kopaka Phantoka has far too many grey parts, which detract from the white.

Do you find it harder to snap joints into position than positioning gears?

I'm-a have to agree with ya, pal. I don't see why cannons are all that matter these days. Melee is what got kids into Bionicle, isn't it? Now changing that is getting rid of them. Do you see a pattern or what?
