Addiction? I Think Not.

A week or so ago my dad said I have an addiction to blogging. (He thinks that's all I do online, but if he knew that I spend very little time actually "blogging" and more time looking at blogs and other internet sites, he'd probably say I have an addiction to the internet.)

Now, I can't deny this, or else it would look like I'm in a state of denial, a sign of addiction. (Thanx, Arpy) But I can't agree either, or else that would just prove his point.

I wouldn't say I'm addicted per say, but I do acknowledge that I spend too much time online each day. I have tried to limit what I do, but I find some of it necessary. I do, however, commend Arpy for giving up the internet for the 40 days of Lent. I don't think I can do that because the internet is my connection to life. It's how I contact my friends everyday and catch up on my hobby/hobbies.

The hobby thing is probably what my dad doesn't understand the most. His hobbies (whatever they are) just don't revolve around the internet as much as mine do. That, and when he was my age he didn't even have computers/internets to use. Kids my age these days use the internet for so many things, I'd consider it normal that I'm on this much, and he should be glad that I'm not on as much as some of my other friends.

He also threatened that we'd have a "chat" about it in the next few days after his revelation to me, but that has yet to happen. I suspect I'll get something when I least expect it and can't defend myself (if he even lets me), probably when I bring up the topic of wanting a laptop for college. I don't think he wants me to have one because he's probably worried (with good reason) I'd stay up to 2 o'clock every morning on it. (Hey, better in my dorm than in the library which has 24/7 internet/computers.) But more on my laptop thoughts in another entry.

I'd say I don't have an addiction. I'd say I use the internet as a primary resource for connecting with friends and my hobby easily, quickly, and efficiently. It's just something he doesn't understand.

If it helps any, I wouldn't say you have an addiction. :P

Thank you!

Now I just need to convince my dad of that and let him let me have a laptop for college.

I stayed up till 2 way too often...

Addiction to blogging, 'eh? I've heard that one too. I could point out much worst additions (unless your blogging gets an international spy group after you)

You're 18, you should be able to make your own choices with things like this.

Not if you want your parents financial support. :P

Huh, my brother is on his computer what seems like 24/7 when he's here, and my parents don't care.

Maybe its because he's 23... :P

Yes and Yes.

I don't think you're addicted.

Isn't denial one of the signs of an addiction? :P

But yeah, Lego can be a pretty Internet-dependent hobby.

"The first step to dealing with your problems is admitting you have them." - About a million books and such.

I wouldn't say you have an addiction. I spend three, sometimes four, hours a day on BZP, and I don't have an addiction. Why? Because I can survive without BZP. I have other things to do. If you're really addicted to something (whenever I say something like that, I don't mean "you" as in you personally - I mean people in general. There's no English word for that, unlike in German), you can't cope without that thing. You're depending on it. But I don't depend on BZP, and I doubt you do either. If BZP, or even the whole Internet, is down for a few days, life goes on for me.

So no, I don't think you have an addiction.

My points exactly.

That's just how I feel. I can keep going on without it, it is just very, very convenient. Now, if only my dad understood this....

LOL, my computer is saying the same thing right now....
