I kinda wish they had ended it with a Giga Drill Breaker instead, though. It was used more often than Lagann Impact, was infinitely more awesome, and plus Chouginga Giga Drill Breaker just didn't cut it for me.

Nah, I think a GDB would have seemed too contrived. It's kinda like how Simon beat Lord Genome... it's the awesomeness of the coming back with the least expected underdog tactic in a crazy hotblooded final salvo that really makes it, for me at least.
