Why do teachers tell you to look a word up in the dictionary if you're unsure of how to spell it?

How could you look it up if you have no idea how it's spelt :???:

It's not that hard to guess the spelling of words, and even if you miss a letter, you're sure to realize your mistake once the word you're looking for isn't in the place you're looking and start looking somewhere else. :P
