A Question Of Modern Etiquette

Lyger

Somebody has headphones on and is listening to their MP3 player. The volume is so loud that the people around them can hear the music. Somebody else yells at them to turn the volume down.

Who is being rude and selfish, the person who is blasting their music or the person who yells at them to turn it down?

I tried to write that unbiased but if you know me or have read an entry I made some time ago, you'll know which side I'm on. I want to see whether I'm the only one who is bothered by this.

I'd say they were both being rude, but if you were to compare the two, I think that the guy who yelled was the ruder of the two. Depending on how obnoxiously loud the music was you can generally tune something like that out. However, if someone starts yelling at the person, EVERYone is disturbed from what they were doing, not just those who are closest to Mr. Headphones. (Not to mention Mr. Headphones either feels embarrassed, confused, or insulted.) On the other hand, if Mr. Yells-a-lot and discreetly ask Mr. Headphones to turn the volume down, that would be a different story.

So, now you have my two cents.
