Just Do It.

The Peacemaker

The recent database crisis has brought one thing to light, if not more. The one thing I speak of is this,

The current system of the BZPower Staff backing up the database is not fool-proof.

Nor should anyone have expected it to be. Therefore, rather than depending solely upon the efforts of the Staff to make sure we don't lose massive amounts of data, I am proposing that the members themselves - the lifeblood of BZP - make an active effort to preserve the data that makes this great site what it is. My proposal applies particularly to CoT and the Creative Outlet areas of the site.

If you make a topic, make an effort to preserve its data on your computer's memory, or in some way that keeps the data from being lost like those 260 pages of the Reality RPG.

There is a semi-handy download option for every topic. However, it is severely limited- only allowing you to download the first page or so of an RPG.

OOC: YEah, but then you need to coordinate with every single player to re-post each post in order all over again. And, lets face it, 261 pages x 40 posts per page is a lot of coordinated posting.

Yeah, or you could do it all yourself, preparing a full and detailed synopsis in case anything like the recent SurvurPhail-a-Thon happens again.

The staff could also make more frequent backups. If the last available backup was in September

A monthly system would mean far less damage in case something like this happens again. (That's only 1/6 of the damage from now...and that's if the last backup was between 3-4 weeks ago, I estimate.)

The good news is that some newer RPGs (as well as RPGs that had a solid fanbase and "rinse and repeat" storylines in which it wasn't necessarily crucial to know every detail to get a grip on the plot, like TSTW,) could survive by starting where they left off. Reality was the more unlucky of the group.

However, Bionicle RPGs were hit rather hard, to the point that they sealed Night of Infinity's (which was a newcomer in RPG Contest #12, thus the entire topic was deleted) fate. Shut thankfully was incumbent long enough to weather the blow, and Exo had no wish to continue the Playground. (Abyss became the new NoI.)

Well, I think the memory loss was one of the bigger contributing factors in the death of Reality. A good bit of Reality's info was lost, leaving many players lost as to what to do.

But, yeah, monthly back-ups would be better than the current system.
