K-on

Upon the suggestion of Wrack and...someone else...was it Lyg? I think it may have been...not sure...but the point is, upon the suggestion of her/them/whatever it ends up as, I looked up what little I was able to find subbed(Namely the first two episodes), and watched. I figured I'd give a musicians perspective since it seems to revolve around music. So, without further delay, let's begin, shall we?

From wikipedia;

K-On!'s story revolves around four Japanese high school girls who join their school's light music club to try to save it from being abolished. However, they are the only members of the club, and none of them have any experience playing musical instruments or reading sheet music.

I'd just like to correct Wikipedia in the sense that, if I understood the beginning of episode two right, their keyboardist has about eleven years of experience. Anyway, moving on, it seems comedic, which is a plus for me, being a comedy person, but I'll see how it plays out. The rest that the wiki gave would either be a spoiler or something you can figure out yourself, so I'll move onto the points being a musician has with this show.

I suppose I'll start with the positive since that's usually how these things are done.

Pros;

~The animation is well-done. Most shows, the characters are awful miming to the instruments, and I'm facepalming whenever they show a guitarist, bassist or drummer. The drummer only hits the drums and cymbals she would in real life though, and the guitarist and bassist don't move their hands unrealistically. I can't comment for the keyboard animations since I'm not much if a pianist though, but from what I can tell it's accurate.

~Research was done. From prices to designs to brands to the little adhesive plastic on the pickguard and pickups of a new guitar and so on, everything checks out as far as I can see(Though I live very far from Japan, so I can't be certain everything is correct as far as a local family-owned shop in Japan's stock and prices and such). Only other manga or anime to do this I've seen is Beck.

~"It's to play, not to protect". As odd as it may sound to non-musicians and some other musicians, I like beat-up guitars. Dinged, dented, worn, scraped, faded, chipped, broken-but-still-usable, quirky, I love the look. It gives the guitar character, and frankly I always hate when people baby a guitar and complain about a small scratch or ding. It's an instrument you pricks, not a relic. Even if I spent $10,000 on a guitar I wouldn't act like that with it. As they said in the show, "It's made for playing".

~Facts are right. It does hurt when you unplug a turned up amp without turning it down. ;_;

~They mentioned Jeff Beck. I love Jeff Beck's work, and he's sorely underrated next to his fellow Yardbirds guitarists(Jimmy Page, later of Led Zeppelin, and Eric Clapton), and easily stands with if not beyond both. The fact they mentioned him is enough to get a "=3" from me.

Now then, for what I didn't like about it that would really only hit a musician;

~They misspelled Hendrix's name. He spelled it "Jimi", it was probably just my sub spelling it "Jimmy", but still worth note if you get the same sub.

~Beginner with an expensive guitar. The guitar the guitarist, who has no experience beforehand, gets, is approximately $2,500 if my conversions were right. It's a Les Paul, so other guitarists can figure out from those that it's a Gibson Les Paul Standard. Don't ask how she got it when it's $2,500, I'll explain that in the next one. I'm not downtalking that, I think the better guitar you can get the better; a good guitar fosters better playing to my eyes, hands and ears, but still, most things beyond $750 or so are specialized, and are really professional instruments, so it just seems odd for me that someone with no experience has a guitar I'd consider selling mine for.

~The way she gets it. The keyboardists father owns the shop the Les Paul is in. I'm fine with using a connection like that to knock down the price some, but $2,100(They knocked it down to about $400 if my conversion was right) is just too much for me. I hate people who do things like that because it kills the hard work that makes you truly love stuff like that, and it's always seemed lazy to me.

~The guitar's finish. They say it's Honeyburst. It's not. This is Honeyburst. Does the guitar in the image above look like that? No. It looks like this. It's Cherry Sunburst. Just a little nitpick of mine being a guitarist, but I figured it was worth mention.

All in all though, I liked it, and if I could find episode 3, which seems to be subbed nowhere yet(To my manga resources to read instead of watch!), I'd still be watching instead of typing. If you like comedy and anime, try it. If you like music and anime, try it. If you like all three like me, you'll like it.

The show just started.

Ah. Well, just so I don't keep searching, about how often do new episodes come up?
