Apocalyptica: Reflections
Apocalyptica is a well-known Finnish band that presently comprises three cellists: Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso, and Paavo Lötjönen. I'm not such a huge fan of their earlier, cello-only albums; while there's something to be said for purism, it's also a sure-fire way to retain a fringe following and not much else. For instance, one of their early albums, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, is interesting to me mainly as a musical experiment; while it's a pretty well-done interpretation of some original Metallica songs that I like, the fact remains that metal does not translate well to cello alone.
Fortunately, Reflections is all about bringing it all together. We get a huge variety of different sounds and textures to complement the masterful cello-playing, percussion being indubitably the most important, but also including piano, violin, double bass, and cello orchestra. The result is a rich, nuanced performance that really carries the weight of some truly "heavy" musical ideas (to use a figure of speech).
Interesting trivia from the liner notes:
Musical "thänx" go out to Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura, CMX, Rammstein, Schostakovich, Opera, Apulanta, and Montserrat Caballé.
The band credits their inspiration for the album to the following:
Nature, Finland, Sauna, Silence, Olvi, Sex, Cappuccino, Motocross, Red Bull, Tea, Kasvopyyhe, CXX, Darkness, Bombay Sapphire, Jalopenos, Maaseutu, Water-skiing, Mountains, Ruokakooma, Pyydaa, Playstation, Wind, Ämpäripää
In the final analysis, I'd say these guys are combining the best of both worlds, classical and metal, and have a lot to offer of their own, too. Definitely worth checking out.
