I have yet to determine whether this has been a sound choice. We have already been able to safely assume in the past that the majority of the site's users at any given time would be American, followed by Canadians and the British. On the other hand, it shows us how scarce the other countries are.

One might complain that this option makes information on them more visible, which on the Internet is always a con. However, looking up information on one's location is not too difficult, and displaying your flag does not make things that much easier. To avoid displaying the flag of their country, people could always change their personal information concerning their country, at the expense of contributing towards an invalid statistic and being unpatriotic.

These flags are also graphic images. This means that every time that someone goes to certain pages which contain this additional icon, it will add to the data to be loaded in order for the page to display. Thus, the server will be slightly busier and pages will take slightly longer to load, although not significantly. However, considering that every minute dozens of new pages are loaded by the various members online, things could compound. It could take one less member to cause the server to overload.

These are my main concerns. They will probably make the site more appealing to the tastes of its users, however. I am making assumptions in this matter.
