For those who don't know "in god we trust" was not added to paper money until the communism scare in the 50's.

However, it was on coins for some time prior to that.

Not until a heavy christian movement during the civil war.

These were also not called "Federal Reserve notes" but rather "Silver Certificate".

the saying was first put on currency during certain movements during the civil war, but was not used as an actual saying until 1956, when it was adopted as the national motto during the "red scare"..
