Challenge 6:

Clockwork

Wow, glad to see some actual participation in these things! :) There were four MOCs made for Challenge 5, check out the content block on the left to see them.

This week's challenge is based off of a combination of a PM I got suggesting a theme and a MOC I made. The goal this week is to build a MOC that has gears that actually do something. Gears are often used as decorations on MOCs to make them look all mechanical-like, but the point of this challenge is to use them for their intended use: making things move. The MOC can be anything from a Toa Mata-type humanoid with functions to a machine of some sort. If you have any motors or anything you could use them, but you could also make a crank or Mata-type gear, or whatever. And the point is not just to have something work, it's to have it look cool while doing it. This is not a requirement, though, as it's hard to say what looks "cool." I imagine either Steampunk or some kind of futuristic theme would be awesome, but the only real requirement is that you have gears in your MOC that cause some sort of movement by rotating other gears.

I recently built a simple little thing that almost qualifies (but the gear doesn't rotate other gears), and when I've finished it I'll post it on the blog (and probably the BBC)as a sort of (not quite) example. Anyway, I know this challenge might be kind of hard (or not, it just seems like it might), but that's why it's a challenge! Good luck.

Goodness.

At least I have weekend work, now. :P

EDIT: Question. If we have something like the Rockoh, but extremely heavily modified, and we left the original gear function in, would that qualify?

Protosteel, these are wonderful challenges. So far you've always picked something good. This one is difficult, but I'll give it my best try.

Excellent, a chance to show off my recently found car MOCing habit. I'm sure I can fit a mechanism in a car somewhere...

Sowwee for taking so long to reply, whenever I'd come to answer this I'd get sidetracked or not be able to think of how to answer. I've decided it'd probably be fine as long as it's heavily modified.

Good gravy, how do you get your font like that?

Also, does that mean just the set being modified or the actual function of the gears? Y'know what, scratch that - I'll just get pics later and you can decide if it's worthy or not. :P

No problem that it's no longer built, you built it and got pictures, which is all that matters. Pretty cool little contraption - what kind of range did it have?

ima buildin a creation as i speaks also is it ok that the gears are armour but move cuz the way i put them on so it does have a function

Well, that would probably be fine (and sounds pretty cool), but I don't think rotating round armor would really have much of an effect - maybe put something that can be rotated into a different orientation on the gears?

Hey Protosteel, sounds like an interesting challenge. :) Fortunately, I already have an MoC built which I think suits this well: my Functioning Minitaure Thornatus V9. :) Proof of its usage of gears is shown in two of the images in its topic (the two showing an underview of it). :) It only rolls well on sofas and non-hard surfaces, though, as incorporating an elastic band in order to allow its "wings" to remain in their position meant that the contraption used to do that is about as low as the wheels. :P

Anyway, yay for my first ever entry into a BZpower contest. :D :P
