When The Earth Rumbles...

My geography teacher was right.

After Christmas, expect some geological disaster/happening to occur. It may not strike constantly, but frequently enough to make it a world trend.

Examples? The post-Christmas Bam Earthquake, the infamous tsunami that crashed the shores of Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and other places, and the most recent one this year: an underwater earthquake.

The earthquake occured just off Taiwan, a bit away from Singapore, but its effects were felt here. A few days before it struck, Singapore felt a bit of tremors hitting the east side of the island (I believe it's east).

And now that it has struck, Singapore and several other Asian countries are facing telecommunications issues.

The hardwires for the region's Internet, network and telephone lines just happened to be located at where the earthquake occured.

And now, webpages that often took 20-30 seconds to load take at least 40 seconds or a minute.

And that included BZPower, DeviantArt, other sites that I commonly visit... Google was the worst...

Blargh!

You might remember there being some large earthquake in the Hawai'ian islands about 6 months ago.

I have a friend (not in any way connected to BIONICLE or LEGO) who lives out there: she was fine, but it took so long to find out because, outside of satellite phones (which aren't cheap anywhere, let alone a state that ships its food to California, only to ship it right back), the only electronic means of communication to the mainland are through large cables running on the floor of the Pacific Ocean.

I remember her commenting: you know it's time to brace yourself if all the birds fly away en masse.

I heard about that. When I first heard of the earthquake, I was thinging of big waves crashing into people or whatever. Never occured to me that all those underwater cables were at risk. I guess there are limits to technology.

Hope everything's working for you, and that your Internet speeds up. :)

 There are definitely limits to technology. It's going to be very tough for humans to overcome the barrier of depending on solid hard stuff. (But, that means that we may not need to chew to enjoy roast lamb! Aww...)

I do hope it speeds up! Anytime soon, too... before I catch withdrawal symptoms.

Ah my good lady, how I feel your pain.

A lot.

My internet's been seriously beaten up by the damage, and it still hasn't recovered. You've no idea how long it took me just to load this page.

Not long, but you should've seen it before. Like molasses I tell you!

...

I'm not crazy.
