Exploriens Explorer

In designing my SHIP, I think I want it to be Exploriens themed. The initial idea was something generic, but I figure if I can tie it into my favorite theme then why not?

Talking about it with a friend, he said that it would have to be generally white (which mine is) with some black bits and a few parts in dark grey (and I plan on putting some Explorien logos in it to). This all sounds well and good, but I feel like putting some color in it too. While my friend (a graphic design major with a keen eye) says that a black stripe here or there and some grey bits (not to mention how there is a 4x100 stud strip of greebles down the top) will stand out, I feel like having a small amount of blue would be nice (aside from the transparent blue windows I'll place in it).

Here is what I have been working on for the past month or so. It is inspired by the Orion from Stargate Atlantis but, since it is Exploriens, will have to lack weapons and instead of being a battleship will be a colonizer/seeder-ship/transport, which is good considering its shape. (Honestly, though, the Enterprise has weapons despite being exploratory. Serenity, however, does not.) I was really excited about my subtle red placing, using the washing-machine bricks with grills over them. Making those blue shouldn't be too bad, no? (This is minifig scale, BTW.)

So here's the question: With Exploriens being civilian explorers, with the white and slight black and grey tones, and of course transparent-blue windshields, what things about the theme stood out that I should pay attention to and can incorporate onto my SHIP? My friend mentioned things like a telescope.

So…in keeping w/ the Exploriens theme, the ship should be white w/ black trim (maybe a tiny bit of grey for accents and greebles) then maybe put some sort of observation area (like the Explorien telescopes) big ol' engines for going where no man has gone before, and have a few areas that could be sensor clusters for scouting planets before landing. No guns, cuz they're civvies... Besides, if you make it black and white, it will draw more attention to the other details that will make it distinctly Exploriens

Exploriens was a bit before my time, but looking through some of the sets, white with some black seems to be a good fit. Trans blue elements wouldn't be bad either, although you could probably get away with solid blue. And trans lime green too, right?

For features... well, I don't know. The sets weren't exactly streamline; they had all sorts of things poking off 'em, from what I could see. So stuff like crane arms or whatever.

Before you time...heh, you were born... :P

I am hoping that just the slightest bit of solid blue would be alright. This is bigger, after all. Plain black does not have to be stuck to strictly, IMO. However, there was no solid blue in the sets, and I realized that Ice Planet 2002 had a lot of white/blue (and trans-orange)--only problem being is they were not exactly space-faring (and I like Exploriens better).

I am having some trans-blue windows on the SHIP. I also noticed how things like telescopes and sensors were trans-green in places, so I think I will add some of those on.

I realized what my friend was talking about when he said telescope: doing a quick Google image search will reveal that a few sets had a 4x4 round tube with a 4x4 trans-neon-green disk at the end. So at this scale simply a barrel and a stud would be more than enough, but I might stick with a 2x2 round brick and a 2x2 disk.

And I will probably place some sensors on there with white rods and trans-green radar discs.

I personally think it looks too sausage-shaped. Maybe give it a more distinctive build than just the thin rocket it is now - some fins here, bridges there, would make it feel more detailed IMO. :)

I was worried about the shape a little myself. I am not sure where some fins would be suitable (considering that for a ship of this size they would not serve much purpose--the only reason a starfighter needs fins is for when it is in atmosphere, but this is too large). A bridge or some sort of observatory would be cool. Which is why I've put the transparent places in so far.

There is only so much I can do in LDraw. A lot of the middle portion will be filled in haphazardly with stray pieces. It is then that I can work on placing a central observation deck/bridge, and a telescope and sensors and stuff.

I like the streamlined approach to the bulk of the ship, but I think it will need more than little sensors and telescopes. Take a look at this ship:

I think adding building up a unique front and engine would really help the overall appeal.

Hey, just saw this entry of yours. In my experience, things that are only shades of gray are dang boring. So make sure to get some color in there.
