  1. As a fan of the franchise since day one, and seeing it evolve and change over the years, I would say the reason it had a huge impact upon a generation, especially myself, is that Lego took from that movie franchise it was licensed to sell sets of and built its own epic detailed saga of good vs evil with themes on many things, from biology, honor, sacrifice, love, bravery, legacy, and so much more. Like Star Wars, Bionicle took from several ideas, from personal bouts with illness, Polynesian cultures, classic myth, Kurosawa-esque epics, to science fiction of all likes, and combined them into something truly unique, weird and original, and that is the short answer of how Bionicle Stood Out from the Crowd.

  2. During this year's spring break, I, being a certified SCUBA diver, took advantage of this year's tenth anniversery of the Mahri Nui storyline, which as you all know took place underwater. I brought with two of the 2007 Bionicle sets, Toa Mahri Matoro and the Barakki Ehlek down to the Bahamas and on St. Patrick's Day brought both of them 15 feet into the depths and took several pictures of both hero and villian in various poses. It was a huge hit in Bionicle fan groups on FaceBook, so I am sure that you guys on BZPower will love it. Enjoy.

Sorry for some blurriness, it was because I took these pictures through my iPhone encased in a waterproof bag.

  3. For me, what made Bionicle special was its atmosphere and strong focus on story and character development. The way the Island of Mata Nui was designed, especially in the MNOG, with its six distinct areas all focused on each element (Ko-Wahi a snowy plain, Po-Wahi a vast desert, Ta-Wahi a volcanic wasteland, you get the picture) made it a genuinely facinating place to venture around, and thus made it a more unique place than, say, The Island of Sodor from the Railway Series or even Cybertron fron the Transformers. Oh, and the music from the MNOG was unlike anything I had ever heard, with a tone similar to Peter Gabriel with synthesis provided an increadibly unique experience experience that hasn't aged in fifteen years!

  4. Now that Bionicle has ended (AGAIN), I would like to ask this question: If Bionicle is rebooted in Generation 3, how would you want it? Would you want a fresh story with all-new characters and storyline, or a continuation of the previous storylines? And if it is a continuation, which Generation would you want the reboot to follow, G1 or G2?

As for me, I would like it to be a continuation of the original G1 we all know and love, with the story of G2 somehow worked into the whole story, for example the original Toa could have disappeared for centuries in Spherus Magna so they could be at Okoto.

    What about you?

  5. After playing Telltale's PHENOMENAL games based on The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, it couldn't help but think about what would happen if Lego joined forces with Telltale to create an episodic game adventure based on Bionicle! It could easily use the Toa (or Masters, if you prefer) as the multiple playable protagonists, similar to Game of Thrones, so it would be beyond awesome in my opinion.

    What do you think?

  6. I have and idea which my be controversial among all of you, but I feel would be pretty ###### neat, so I might as well say it: do you guys think there's room for character customization screen at the very beginning of the game, similar to Runescape? Here, you could choose which village you originate from (Le-Koro, Ta-Koro, Onu-Koro, ect), which Kanohi mask you wear, and of course, a name, either made up by the player or randomized. What do you all think about this idea?

  7. I'm not sure whether to be happy or not.

Bionicle ended on such a happy note, and now they're bringing it back.

It's almost as if Disney decided to release Toy Story 4 after Toy Story 3 ended the series so well.

We'll see what I think when it comes out.

As for the mask, it's probably a Great Being.

I'm sorry, but wasn't the ending of Bionicle in 2010 pretty abrupt? In fact, once our emotions over the ending cleared, we realized that the ending was so rushed and flawed, that it definatley deserved better than what we got (Bionicle Stars?? What the flying Karzahni?). So in a way, I am hoping the the series continues right where it left off. That would be great.

  8. I was looking over this YouTube video on Bionicle's appearance in The Lego Movie, and I noticed a few coments talking about rumors saying that Bionicle would be coming back next year.

I personally, highly doupt this to be true, but I want to know from others, what do you think about this rumor? Do you believe this story to be true, or just a false rumor?

If Bionicle were to come back, in what capacity would you like to see it?

  9.

And one final fun thing; some of the Bionicle media was released in Japanese, so there are official transliterations for some of the early names. I don't have them on hand much, but a Tumblr user who watched Mask of Light in Japanese recently mentioned that, for instance, Vakama was pronounced "Wakama" (ワカマ) rather than the alternative transliteration that turns hard Vs to Bs (which would make him "Bakama", バカマ).

Much like Varan the Unbelievable (1958), the original name was バラン or "Baran."

I have transliterrated the other names from the years 2004-2007 into Katakana, using helpful information from you guys. I chose not to do the years from 2008-2010 because from then on I can say that the names started to sond less and less Japanese.

  10. This is very neat work. I do not know any Japanese so I can't really help with this project, but it's very neat how well many of the early names, at least, can be transliterated.

The linguistic similarities are probably mostly coincidence. Many of the earliest names were taken from Polynesian languages, which often have similar word formation (particularly in that there are very few consonant blends), and many other early names are taken from languages as wide-ranging as Latin (Pelagia), English (Nixie), Finnish (Jaa/Jaatikko), Hawaiian (Kailani), Irish (Aodhan), and even Japanese (Kai, Mamoru).

Still, that doesn't make the project any less interesting!

That name so reminds me of My Little Pony. "The GREAT and POWERFUL NIXIE!"
