  1. Just reposting a dev quote from Gordon Klimes from youtube comments, so it gets more recognition. Fascinating background!

In the early stages of preproduction we received some files from Saphire for visual reference. I don’t think they were in any sort of playable version, just 3D models of a few environments (not all of them). As I recall we had 3D models for Onu-Koro, Po-Koro, and I believe Ko-Koro which we used as a basis for our art. Ga-Koro and Le-Koro were pretty much left open to our interpretation so I had a lot of fun designing those. I think there was a concept illustration for the exterior of Ta-Koro but no interiors so I just made that up. Lego sent us prototypes of the toys; Toa, Tohunga (Matorans), Turaga, and Rahi, and miscellaneous fauna. Our 3D artist modeled each piece from scratch which we then vectorized to work with in Flash. At first we tried to vectorize entire character animations but the line clean-up and coloring was too laborious, so we adopted a more compartmentalized approach, building character animations in a lego-like fashion. This also allowed us to color tint body parts as needed and build up a library of motions. These different approaches should be apparent when looking at the early Ta-Koro cutscenes compared to later ones. We also received a story bible put together by Greg Farshtey which detailed the world, main characters, overall storyline for year one, and super secret spoilers of Mata Nui. The storyline was focused purely on the exploits of the Toa and their quest for the masks of power. This was all to be handled within the PC game and therefore off-limits to us at Templar. Instead we were tasked to do something with the throwaway Happy Meal villagers. All we had were names and one sentence descriptions of the Turaga and two main Tohunga per village. For instance Kapura’s description was something like “Not very smart, can travel fast by moving slow, farts fire.” The rest of the Tohunga we just made up as needed, submitting names for approval to Lego. From these meager beginnings we fleshed out the characters and their stories, interweaving it through main story plot points that we weren’t allowed to show and introducing new Rahi to coincide with release dates for the toys. We worked one to two months ahead of each game update, and halfway through the year were told that the PC game had been cancelled. It now fell on us to tell the climax of the story with the final battle against Makuta and the rest is history. After the success of MNOLG Lego showed particular interest in Hahli’s Quest, setting up a focus group with a bunch of kids to play test the beta version before release. It was weird sitting behind a one-way mirror watching them play our game and getting quizzed about it afterwards. The one thing they seemed to focus on was if anyone cared that the hero was a girl, and whether her bag should be called a purse vs satchel lol. Production went smoothly for the most part though I think we suffered from featuritis, over-stuffing the game with ideas that we didn’t have time to properly follow through with. Again what we could show at the end of the game was restricted by the release of the Mask of Light movie, so the ending is all rather disjointed and ambiguous.

  2. Hello,

I have played and completed to my knowledge fully the game, but still i haven't unlocked the final rank. I got all the letters, masks, upgrades and medals on the levels. The only thing that comes to my mind is that I have to get rank 1 in every level, even the arena/boss ones. Which would be a lot of work and possibly nothing out of it.

Any of you who have completed the game and could offer any help?

  3.

Weird. I don't think those are the silver letter cards. I think they're the regular cards (based on the numbering 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91), but holo-foil somehow. I didn't even know those came as holo cards...

Personally I'd buy it, but the seller doesn't ship to the USA

I think that if you shoot him a message, he will be glad he has a buyer ;)

It's funny that the same guy is selling one of the other MANY that were given away at CC.

Am I right?  The only difference is that one card is printed "#057 of 100 made" while the other was handed out by the thousand??

He bought it 3 months ago: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEGO-Bionicle-2014-NYCC-VIP-Exclusive-Tahu-Mask-57-of-100-made-Extremely-RARE-/162536625803

The piece is obviously the same, but the packaging has several minor changes indicating the VIP status.

  5. Ah I do recall this picture actually, my apologies... Does anyone know why there were two kinds made? Was it perhaps a prototype form of the transparent clear one they used for the NYCC giveaway? Perhaps they tried making the red one transparent but had trouble doing so (hence the much more translucent version) and in the end gave up and switched to clear? Seems unlikely as Lego has been making transparent items for years but is a thought at least!

You are right Munty, there is only one kind, and that's the clear one. The one with a red "supernova" like effect is a one-of-a-kind misprint(?) which ended in the 40 or so clear red Hau's DeeVee got.

  6.

What about the 2015 Protector masks and the Metru Red Komau?

I'm under the impression that he's waiting for Lego to release official images of the masks by themselves and the Metru Red Komau was from a Chinese bootleg set, so it's not an official collectible.

    - :t: :l: :h:

Was there ever a confirmation about that? In the thread it's left unanswered, just a suspicion.

  7.

Does anybody have photos of back sides of the other minifigure sets?

You may just have to search for images of the back of their boxes, such as this:

    lava_gate_review_02.jpg

Yeah, but as you can see, the image is not very clear, and nobody could make the alternate model out of that.

  8. 2002

    One word... design!

The bohrok were so unique that they made 12 of them :P And there were the first vehicles (boxor) and mechs (exo-toa)! And still the mystery of mata nui. And for the first time, there is grave danger, while the rahi were a danger too, but the bohrok were tearing the island literally to (lego) pieces.

  9. Hello,

i know that there were several differences in packaging and so for bionicles. Like that some sets have the piece counts written on the box and others don't. That Metru canisters can have glitters or not. That there were several special editions with various added cd's/collectibles for a limited time. And also i have just found out that my hordika canisters come in several different colors AND two different molds. So does anybody know anything more on this broad subject?

    My hordika canisters:

no piece count - 10 big and 8 small pegs on the underside - light grey/gunmetal

yes piece count - 10 big and 8 small pegs on the underside - dark grey/gunmetal

yes piece count - 10 small and 8 big pegs on the underside - medium grey/gunmetal

    Now check yours ;)
