I actually really, really like the Ghost type. The weird thing is, I haven't really trained all that many Ghost Pokemon...still, the ones that I have trained have been among the best Pokemon on their respective teams. We've got a legendary, a Pokemon (previously) without a weakness, a chandelier with massive special attack, a golem that can tear Dragons apart with its bare fists, and a haunted sword and shield with several stats through the roof. I definitely want to train more Ghost types, and there is absolutely no way I can pick a favorite among all these awesome Pokemon.

Last but certainly not least, the newcomer: Fairy type. Coming up next!

    -Venusaur ("Saur", "Triffid" (Mega))
    -Torterra ("Sprout")
    -Meganium ("Megaman")
    -Serperior (no name, "Randall")

Huh, I guess the only Grass types I've ever used have been starters...I never noticed. I like Grass types, but they have a lot of weaknesses, and their advantages can be covered by other things, so maybe that's why I don't train them as often. That being said, possessing a Serperior in Black 2/White 2 makes Humilau City Gym a complete joke. Definitely too tough to pick a favorite here, what with the bond one forms with their starter being special and all.

    Psychic is next.

    -Golurk ("Ralph")

I think Ground is a smart type to have on your team, what with it being the only weakness of pure Electric Pokemon. Not only that, it has a lot of other useful advantages, and a lot of Ground Pokemon are just plain cool. How cool, you ask? The Nidoking and Golurk listed above were given the task of taking down Dragon Pokemon (Avalanche and Ice Punch, respectively), and they both excelled in that task. Also, both Garchomps were capable of demolishing Flint's team by spamming Earthquakes before the enemy could even take their first turn. I love them all so much...

Well, going by rarity of types, Fire and Poison are tied. Fire will be next, Poison will be after that.

    -Lapras ("Lap")
    -Kyurem (White)
    -Aurorus ("Celsius")

My relationship with Ice is weird. I like the Ice type, but I don't really like a whole lot of Ice Pokemon enough to try them out. You may notice that of the three Pokemon listed above, two of them are given to you for free and the other is a mascot. That's how little I feel like going out of my way for Ice types. Still, I want to change that and train more Ice types. Avalugg looks pretty cool, and I want to give a chance to Abomasnow and even Vanilluxe. Maybe Cryogonal? I've also kind of wanted to train a Cloyster for a while. But that's something to be decided later. As for my current favorite...well, I think I would have to go with Aurorus. Refrigerate combined with Hyper Beam makes for one heck of a Pokemon.

Ghost and Fairy are tied for rarest type, so I'll do Ghost next and save Fairy for last.
  5. Pahrak Model ZX
Well, this is a short entry.

    -Pidgeot ("Tori")

Yep, that's it. I can't say I'm a fan of Normal type, since Normal Pokémon don't really strike me as interesting that often. There are some that I like the design of, but not enough to include them on my team--I'd prefer that slot be used by a Pokémon that can get STAB on a move that will actually cause super-effective damage. I'd guess there's probably not a high chance of me using Normal types frequently on future teams either.

Anywho, next up will be Flying.
  6. Pahrak Model ZX
    -Venusaur ("Saur", "Triffid" (Mega))
    -Nidoking ("Arthur")

I'll be frank: I don't like Poison. I'm perfectly fine with it having two Gyms and no legendaries, and I never had any real reason to put it on my team. Of course, now that it has a type advantage over Fairy, it's infinitely more useful, so maybe I'll get more use out of it in the future. All that being said, the Pokemon listed above were all absolutely phenomenal parts of my team. My LeafGreen Venusaur was able to defeat my rival's Charizard. My Mega Venusaur can obliterate Water types with Petal Blizzard and Fairy types with a Toxic/Venoshock combo. My Nidoking, on top of the aforementioned Dragon-slaying duties, can decimate enemies with Earthquake and Poison Jab. I love them all so much...but they are exceptions to the rule. Though there are a small number of other Poison types I may like to use in the future.

    Rock is coming up next.
  7. Pahrak Model ZX
    -Bronzong ("Bronz")
    -Gallade ("Lancelot")
    -Victini
    -Mewtwo
    -Reuniclus ("Cell")

Psychic is an interesting case. I've always thought the type and a lot of the Pokemon were pretty cool, but they don't seem to find their way onto my team with any great frequency. I thought maybe this was because they were rare, but turns out Psychic is actually a very common type, so...I don't know. Of the Psychic types I have trained, though, they've all been absolutely wonderful (though it should be noted that two of them are legendaries ), so I'd love to have more Psychic types in the future (which they can probably see).

    Bug type is up next.
  8. Pahrak Model ZX
    -Gigalith (2, neither have nicknames)
    -Aurorus ("Celsius")

I never realized how few Rock types I've trained. I suppose they do have a lot of weaknesses, don't they? Hm. Well anyway, Gigalith is one of the few Generation V Pokemon that I liked right away, and it became my absolute favorite Pokemon for a time. Of course, now that I have an ice dino that can use a Hyper Beam that causes super effective damage to Dragons, Gigalith has some stiff competition. So I can't decide. I'd definitely like to use more Rock types in the future, because, quite frankly...they rock. (*Pelted with Rock Blast*)

Next, I'll list my Fighting Pokemon.
  9. Pahrak Model ZX
    -Lucario ("Aki", "Akamai")
    -Bronzong ("Bronz")
    -Dialga ("Vahi")
    -Empoleon ("Kowalski")
    -Genesect
    -Bisharp ("Muramasa")
    -Aegislash ("Ultima")

I've had mixed experience with Steel. Sometimes, despite its many resistances, one of my Steel Pokemon just won't have a talent for lasting very long in battle. But other times they're just plain awesome. I like Steel as a type overall, and I definitely hope to use more of it--especially now that it has a type advantage over Fairy to add to its usefulness. Picking a favorite is rather difficult, but I am absolutely loving my Aegislash right now...

    Next up is Dragon.
  10. Pahrak Model ZX
With Squishy doing favorite Pokémon of each type, I kind of wanted to do the same thing. But it very quickly became extremely difficult for me to pick favorites, and because I avoid decision-making, I decided to just list all the Pokémon of each type I've actually used in my games. Going from most common to least common (thanks to Bulbapedia), so the first one is Water.

    -Lapras ("Lap")
    -Poliwrath ("Paul")
    -Gyarados ("Berserker" (shiny))
    -Floatzel ("Zel", "Zelda")
    -Samurott ("Zenkai", "Masamune")
    -Keldeo
    -Empoleon ("Kowalski")
    -Greninja ("Gali")

Water is one type I usually try to put on my team. Not so much because I love the type itself, but because I like having Surf on my main team so I don't have to use up a slot for an HM Slave as often. Luckily, it's not usually difficult to find a really awesome Water type! (Though I felt Generation V had a small problem with this, hence two Samurotts and a Keldeo.) I think Samurott, Greninja, and Floatzel stand out, but I don't know if I can narrow it down any further than that.

Next up, the second most common type: Normal.

I decided to watch Madoka this week. I'm still in pain.

But Pokemon news helps me forget the pain! Game Freak is holding a Pokemon Game Show over in Japan right now, featuring a demo of X and Y focusing on Mega Evolutions! Apparently you activate it using a special button on the move screen, and you can use a move the same turn that you activate it. The demo lets you use Mega Mewtwo. Impatience rising. In addition, it confirms that you now run by default, and holding the B button slows you down to a walk. Very good. I believe there was also a report saying there would be just under 50 Mega Evolutions in the game? (Not 100% sure on this one.)

There's also some news about the Fairy type being introduced into the TCG, and a new anime called Pokemon The Origin. It's not clear if it's a special or a mini-series or what, but it takes us back to Kanto to follow the story of Pokemon Trainer Red, so it sounds pretty flipping awesome. I'm too lazy to link the trailer, but you should go watch it.
  12. Pahrak Model ZX
Because why not. Subject to change as time goes on, surely, but as of right now, here’s how I feel about the seven main series regions.

    1. Sinnoh, to the surprise of no one. You’re probably saying this is solely based on nostalgic bias, and that is a huge part of it, I’ll admit that. Pokémon Diamond was what brought me back into Pokémon, and it and Platinum were the first times I started to really consume all the data I could about the games, which set the trend going forward. Sinnoh’s the reason I’m playing Pokémon today, so it will always have a very special place in my heart. Of course, there is more to love about Sinnoh: personally I very much like the general design aesthetic of Gen IV Pokémon, I adore that the region is steeped in legend and myth, Cynthia, you can play your badges like a xylophone, and how could you not enjoy the Underground? I know Sinnoh has faults, but it’s very special to me, and I dearly hope the eventual remake is on a system I own.

    2. Alola. Probably not surprising either. It’s a beautiful and extremely unique region, and it introduces many new twists on the Pokémon formula without rendering it unrecognizable. Many things I liked about other games/generations/regions were present in Alola, and while they weren’t all handled perfectly, I do think they were handled well, and it helps give the region a more “complete” feel. The plot and mythology are both engaging, though I do wish they’d intertwined a bit more. The Pokédex features favorites from every generation, and as for the new Pokémon…well, I’m a bit 50/50 when it comes to Gen VII’s design aesthetic, but that doesn’t weigh it down too much. And Alola forms are inspired (even if I can’t seem to get behind any that end up Dark-type). There are a few miscellaneous things from ORAS that I wish had stuck around, but Sun and Moon are improvements over X and Y in every conceivable way, and that helps me just really love this region. And judging from what we’ve seen of USUM, I’m beginning to wonder if it could even give Sinnoh a run for its money.

    3. Johto. Kind of bumpy getting here, but…nostalgia played a big part again. Gold version was the first Pokémon game that was really mine and I didn’t have to share, so it’s the focal point of nostalgia as far as I’m concerned. Yeah, some of my memories of Gold are hazy, I don’t feel like I excelled when I played HeartGold, and now that I’ve got VC Gold I’m just baffled by some of the Pokémon distribution choices, but the feel of the region is something that just works. Difficult to explain, but this is all subjectivity anyway. And there’s something interesting about this graphical style, something notably old but still in vibrant color, that helps it retain this feeling of being a refreshing update to Gen I. There are some great Pokémon here too, though it can be difficult to find some of them—Typhlosion will always be a favorite, and darn it, I love Unown, I know they’re utterly useless in a battle but I’m too fascinated by their concept to feel anything but love towards these letters with eyes.

    4. Hoenn. Before ORAS, if you heard me mentioning Hoenn, it was only to disparage it. I lost interest in Pokémon during Gen III, a large part of which I still blame on not being able to send Pokémon from Gen II up to the new Generation, and even now a large number of the Pokémon designs introduced here just feel a bit odd to me. Again, this hatred was all before ORAS. ORAS, when they came out, were the utmost pinnacle of Pokémon games on a mechanical level, and are still pretty darn close. They took a great deal of the good things in X and Y and really drove them home, capitalized on everything people already liked about the region (except for trumpets), and introduced plenty of new things that all worked very well. I utterly adore soaring, I can’t speak too highly about that feature. Hoenn’s personality also shone really well in those games, and it’s helped me find a much greater respect for the region. Though, since nearly all I like about it is strictly from ORAS, Hoenn itself falls smack dab in the middle.

    5. Unova. Really, I’ve always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with Unova, largely stemming from the fact that during Gen V I was unfortunately going through a bit of a genwunner phase. (Thank God that’s over.) Make no mistake, I still stand by some of my criticism: Black and White try far too hard to distance themselves from the other games, worst of all by expressly forbidding us from catching any Pokémon from the first four Generations until we beat their main story, and that issue is exacerbated tremendously by the general design aesthetic of Gen V Pokémon, which I find to be, well…pretty terrible. (With notable exceptions—Chandelure, Gigalith, and Zekrom are some of my all-time favorites.) But there’s also a lot that Gen V does right. It was an enormous step forward in story and characterization—the Gym Leaders never felt more like an actual ensemble of people, to say nothing of Team Plasma, and it’s always impressed me that the plot actually interrupts your initial League challenge. There’s also a wealth of post-game areas to explore, and we’ve still only covered Black and White. Black 2 and White 2 (as opposed to the expected Pokémon Gray) were a unique choice in and of themselves, and retained the best of their predecessors while strengthening the mechanics, adding loads more content, and no longer restricting you to Unovan-original Pokémon, thank God. (Though now that I think about it, I did only use Gen V mons when I played B2 and W2…huh…) Taking a fairer look at Unova, it really is a wonderful place, and as that teenage inclination towards arbitrary bad decisions abates it might actually move up this list. Still…Gen V Pokémon designs…I haven’t gotten over most of you.

    6. Kanto. Kanto is just, well…basic. And I mean, it’s the first Gen, it kind of has to be since it’s the template. But still, I just kind of…I don’t know, I guess I’ve used up all the nostalgia I had for it and feel like there isn’t really much else going for it? I’ve trekked through this region probably more than any other, but I don’t know that I really have anything in particular to say about it. The last two slots on this list were hard to decide between, and part of why Kanto’s here and not the bottom might just be extra slack for having the burden of getting the franchise off the ground. Again, I don’t know that I really have anything to say.

    7. Kalos. And like, I like Kalos. I do. But X and Y left me wanting more from it in the worst possible way, and while I was focusing on the positives and giving it the benefit of the doubt when I was expecting them to do a third version or a second pair to fix that, they dropped this region like it was hot and moved right along to Gen VII. So ultimately, Kalos feels like a half-baked trial run for the rest of the 3DS titles and even GameFreak doesn’t really care about it all that much. And that sucks. Because there are a lot of things I like about Kalos: the Gen VI Pokémon design aesthetic is marvelous, its Pokédex being a collection of favorites across all Gens was a wonderful decision that thankfully seems to be the new norm, and I love Mega Evolution and have honestly docked points from Sun and Moon for being so quick to discard it. It’s controversial, but I’m very glad for the changes made to experience—I’m in my 20s, I don’t have the time or patience to grind and now I don’t have to. But for everything Kalos did well, there’s a lot that is just so sloppy. Characterization is a huge step back from Gen V. Plot is about as bare as Gen I. Can’t say there’s much of a post-game. X and Y, in hindsight, just feel like they could have been so much more, and while we can forgive that at the start of a generation, not following up with a correction just makes it look so much worse. Because now X and Y are all we have to judge Kalos with, and it doesn’t compare well. Again, there’s a lot that I like about X and Y and Kalos—I enjoyed playing these games. I just wish I could have had an even better Kalos game after that. Sun and Moon feel like far more complete games, and remembering how abrupt the transition from Gen VI to Gen VII felt at the time, that’s somewhat strange to me. So I guess my relationship with Kalos now is a bit like what I once had with Unova, and maybe as time goes on I’ll be less bitter about the lack of a third game and I’ll feel better about this region. Chances are there will in the distant future come a day when X and Y are remade, and I dearly hope those take better advantage of Kalos.

So, there you have it. Who’s offended?
  13. Pahrak Model ZX
So I mentioned I was writing a new fanfic. I’ve made some progress, but I’d like to settle on a title for it, and I’m not 100% sure about anything I’ve managed to come up with.

It takes place on Spherus Magna 100,000 years after the reformation and the Great Beings’ civil war. Society is still struggling to recover, the feeling of hopelessness is all anyone knows, and the Toa, now all products of the Red Star, are too ashamed of what they’ve become to inspire anyone. A small team sets off to investigate a strange temple, discovering a crystal tied to one of the Principles followed by the Matoran in ancient times—and are told they must seek out the rest, for Velika’s final experiment has awakened at last, his sights set on reducing the broken remains of the world to absolute nothing.

Every title I’m kicking around at the moment involves two of “Inika”, “Crystal”, and “Renaissance”/”Rebirth”, and that alone has a lot of possibilities. But I’m not totally sold on any of them and am open to other suggestions. Some of the titles I’m giving the most consideration to are:

    -Crystal Renaissance
    -Renaissance Inika
    -Crystalline Rebirth

So I don’t know. Does anyone have any thoughts?
  14. Pahrak Model ZX
Okay so I was writing The Comedy of Our Generation and it wasn’t really working out. Turns out, I’m just not funny. Or in possession of the analytical ability to really pick apart G1 like I wanted to. Sucks, because I really liked the ending I had in mind. The Boneheads of Voodoo Island were going to be there and everything.

I might try to revisit it later, but I should probably redirect my energy towards things like more Okoto fanfiction or the Mega Man Star Force rewrite featuring Harp Note. You know, things people actually asked me to write. (And maybe do stuff like homework and that novel-type-thing…and video games…)

But speaking of those two other things, the tentative titles I’m thinking of using are In Our Bones and Shooting Star Sonia, both of which are pretty generic but get the point across at least. And since I usually end up using tentative titles as actual titles, those are probably here to stay so I just need to let them grow on me.

As for when to expect them, well…that’s a little trickier. With In Our Bones, I want to complete and edit it before serializing it (so I can do so on a regular schedule); for Sonia, I’m thinking I might just post each chapter to OTC as I write it. I’ll certainly try to keep up a decent pace, but that one will be longer (12 chapters?), and I want to get feedback as I go if possible. Chapter 1 is…coming along, and I’m trying to funnel all my spare creativity towards it for the time being. (A lot of it goes to potential sub-plots and developments, but I guess that’s still good?) All I can say for now is “Stay tuned!”

I've made it to the second island and have cleared two of the three Trials there, just want to see if I can make myself level my team a little before taking on the last one.

Started with Rowlet, obviously. I named him Boko and he is simply phenomenal. Not only is Rowlet the cutest Pokemon ever designed, but it's pretty darn powerful too, and Boko's only grown stronger since evolving into a Dartrix. He was all I used for a while so he's a few levels ahead of the others. I'm trying to give him a bit of a rest, but I may need to rely on him in the next Trial too.

I was sure to catch a Mudbray as soon as I could. Luckily, the Pokemon I have named Onepu came with the new Stamina ability, which increases his Defense every time he is hit, which is pretty great. He came knowing Bulldoze, and it didn't take long to learn Highhorse Power (95 power, 95 accuracy); I didn't think he'd become a powerhouse until evolving, and now I'm almost afraid to see how powerful that'll make him!

I also spent some time getting a Cubone, Wargoyle. She's been pretty solid from the get-go too, though her typing is redundant with Onepu's for the time being. I need to be careful about evolving her--apparently Cubone from Alola only evolve at night, at level 28 and up, and since Moon inverts the time of day...I want to get this right so that she can evolve ASAP, and maybe take on the next (Grass-themed) Trial.

And just before logging on I caught a Wimpod, Podzilla. It was...simultaneously difficult and easy. See, to catch Wimpod you have to actually catch it. It appears on the overworld and runs into a hole in the ground as soon as it sees you, so I didn't intercept it the first time. But once I did, one Quick Ball was all it took, thank God, and though her moves aren't great I'm confident in saying she'll fare better than a Magikarp would, and I know she'll have comparable payoff.

I really, really want an Alolan Sandshrew, but those are on island 3 apparently, and then the last slot is reserved for Lunala. It'll be a Ghost-heavy team, but I'll cope.

One thing that bugs me though: when encountering wild Pokemon, they can now call for help from other wild Pokemon. This is involved in chaining for shinies and high IVs, which is all well and good, but when two Pokemon are out you can't throw Poke Balls. And once you knock out one, the other one can call out another Pokemon right away. And then do that again. And again. And. Again. It's really rather frustrating in practice, I've found. But the only other Pokemon I want to be absolutely sure to catch before beating the game is Alolan Sandshrew. Once I beat the game and start hunting to fill the Dex, maybe I'll have more capacity to be patient with this mechanic...and more powerful Pokemon who can wipe out reinforcements in one fell swoop.

So yeah, Moon is fun thus far! I'll make another post if I come across anything else I feel like saying.

New semester is...going...and some poetry has come up in my English classes. Once again, talking about poetry made me want to attempt some, and the result is this.

Since I'm not the best with poetry, I didn't put a whole lot of thought into line length and none of it rhymes or anything like that, but I wanted to try messing with the style a little bit. Several letters throughout the poem have been removed or replaced with symbols that may or may not resemble the intended letter, and there are a few other miscellaneous format alterations here and there. I wanted to try bringing out the idea of "broken" just by looking at the text.

I had also considered arranging the words in such a way that they formed the shape of a Kanohi with a scar in it or something, but I don't have the patience for something like that. Oh well.

If you didn’t hear, Pokémon Bank has been updated! You can now use it with Gen VII games, transfer Pokémon from Gen VI to Gen VII, and transfer Pokémon from Virtual Console Gen I games into Gen VII!

Bank now also has a National Pokedex function, which registers all the Pokémon you have in all games connected to it, making it even easier to keep track of your progress. Still hoping they update Sun and Moon with the National Dex, but this is pretty neat.

When transferring Pokémon from VC to Gen VII, here’s how they’re updated according to Serebii:
-They all have their Hidden Abilities! Unless the species doesn’t have a Hidden Ability, of course.
-Nature is “based on experience”? Not very specific…
-Guaranteed to have at least 3 maximum IVs.
    -Gender is random.
    -EVs are wiped clean.
-There’s also a chance of being made shiny based on what their Gen I IVs are!

Don’t forget that a Bank pass costs money, though. (I thought I had enough but taxes pushed it a few cents too high.)

Oh, and using Bank from now until October 2nd will get you Mew’s exclusive Z Crystal! And that still leaves 2 more event Z Crystals to look forward to.

So it's been announced that ORAS will have a new story thing called "The Delta Episode". A meteor is on course to collide with the planet, so the protagonist has to stop it.

It seems their method of doing so involves putting on a space suit, riding Rayquaza as it Mega Evolves and shoots into the upper atmosphere, and battling Deoxys.

You get to ride Mega Rayquaza into space to fight Deoxys.

    I...I just have no words...

This is a wierd idea I thought of the other night. For this “challenge,” you must decide on a set team of six Pokemon to use through the game with types corresponding to the Bohrok, with the Bohrok names being used as the Pokemon’s nicknames.

    Tahnok: Fire
    Pahrak: Rock
    Nuhvok: Ground
    Kohrak: Ice
    Lehvak: Poison
    Gahlok: Water

The Pokemon can have secondary types, but their secondary types cannot be the primary type of another Bohrok Pokemon. Secondary types can overlap. You may catch other Pokemon for Pokdex, trading, HM Slave, or catching purposes, but you cannot use them for any major battles. Bohrok Pokemon can have moves of any type, but must have at least one move of their primary type. If a Pokemon evolves into a Pokemon with a primary type, or if it currently has the primary type of another Bohrok but loses that type through evolution, you can use it as a Bohrok so long as you evolve it.

    Other possible additions could be:
-using a female player character named after one of the Bahrag
-catching one or two Dragon Pokemon and naming them after the Bahrag; these Pokemon can be used in major battles so long as you keep the levels of all Bohrok Pokemon from falling behind
-naming non-Bohrok Pokemon (such as HM Slaves) after Krana or Bohrok Va
-not missing a single trainer (“Clean it all.”)
-anything else you may want to throw in

There were three announcements this morning:

    1. Pokken Tournament DX! It’s Pokken on the Switch, adding in the fighters who have been added to the arcade version since the Wii U release PLUS Decidueye. Since I don’t have a Switch I don’t expect to be getting this, but it’s definitely interesting, and I look forward to watching how Decidueye plays.

    2. Gold and Silver on eShop! I was hoping they’d do this. Gold was the first version I played on my own as opposed to sharing with my sisters, so Johto was my favorite region before Sinnoh came along. I’m very much looking forward to another trek across the region with my trusty Typhlosion again.

    3. Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon! Not a whole lot of info at present, but Solgaleo and Lunala have new forms that sort of look like they’ve fused with Necrozma (or are wearing it as armor or something). I didn’t think we’d get these so soon, but Alola is great, so I am definitely not complaining! I really hope we can get those forms with pre-existing Solgaleo and Lunala, since I already bought both Sun and Moon…

This reminds me that I really need to transfer my Living Dex up to Gen VII. I’ve been meaning to do that forever…

    -Wild Area sounds awesome
    -Dreadnaw and Corviknight look rad
-Wooloo looks cute, the grass types are good designs just not really my thing
-The legendaries…like, they for sure look goofy, but that’s not necessarily bad. Neither is going to be my new favorite design. I’m leaning Sword right now.
-I hate Dynamax. “Hey, we need an obligatory gimmick for this generation! Let’s just combine Mega Evolution and Z-Moves but make it as bland as possible!” I hate it. And they’re going to force me to use it in Gym Battles. Not jazzed about Raid Battles (and potentially Raid Battle-exclusive Pokemon) either.
-I AM jazzed about Rotom Phone! And water bike!
-The characters all make a good first impression. At first I thought it was weird that they’d reveal the Champion right away, but in a region where the Pokemon League is sports it only makes sense. Also he has brand logos on the back of his cape and that is hilarious to me. Kind of hate that his ace seems to be a Charizard as opposed to, you know…an actual new Pokemon…
-I’m actually going to pre-order now, just need to find that gift card I misplaced.

Listen, I love Typhlosion and the Sword and Shield reveal left me feeling underwhelmed, and though I’ll probably end up seeing Detective Pikachu eventually I’d rather not spend money on it because what the what, so…this was the best way to feel like I actually still like Pokemon.

I wanted to see if I could beat Pokemon Gold Version (the 3DS Virtual Console version specifically) only using Typhlosion. I restarted the game, picked Cyndaquil, named him Blaze VI, and never used another Pokemon in battle. The only Pokemon I caught were ones I needed for HM usage, and even then there were a good amount of gift Pokemon who could use HMs so I didn’t need to do much of that.

After 12 hours and 15 minutes of game time, Blaze VI is level 84 and has beaten Red. And it’s a rather satisfying achievement.

Honestly, I think this was easier than using a full team. I didn’t have any particularly big problems, per se, but here are the hiccups/close calls:
-The second rival fight, since his Feraligatr knew Water Gun and Blaze didn’t have an effective way of dealing with him at that point
-The freaking Ice Path, my eternal nemesis
-Bruno’s Machamp probably would have been a problem if its Rock Slide hadn’t missed
-Karen’s Umbreon, which is tanky and knows Sand Attack AND Confuse Ray
-Lance got off a Thunder Wave so Blaze had to tank a few Hyper Beams, but he did, like a champ
-The first thing to put up an actual fight in Kanto was the dang Snorlax in front of Diglett’s Cave
-Blue did get a lot of damage on Blaze, but aside from one Extreme Speed it was all Sandstorm damage
-And obviously Red is no pushover

By going everywhere I could before challenging each gym and fighting everyone I saw, I was able to get Blaze to a Typhlosion before even the fourth gym. At that point he can learn Thunder Punch and Fire Punch via TM, and those (plus Dig for coverage and Quick Attack for fodder) will carry you pretty dang far—you’ll outspeed and oneshot just about everything. Definitely get Return ASAP, plus the Pink Bow held item to boost it, and be sure to pick up Earthquake in Victory Road. Obviously replace Fire Punch with Flamethrower once you get it. I barely used any items at all, either.

It was a fun side project for a week. I’d kind of like to do this sort of thing again, but I think Moon is too hard for me to do a solo run…

I’ve been spending my time watching miscellaneous YouTube videos instead of actually doing work (Red Joker? What’s that?), and after seeing someone talk about how they’d construct a Pokémon gym I ended up thinking about it myself and sort of like what I came up with, plus this blog needs some kind of content, so what the heck.

What I ended up going with was a Steel type gym. The leader would be studying legends tied to the Pokémon Aegislash, which is associated with kings and is said to be the result of a spirit inhabiting a sword. The gym would be divided by three gates, each with a different shield on the lock, three different bladed weapons on a rack against the wall, and two trainers to fight. Beat the trainers and they each tell you a different piece of a story about an ancient king, talking about feats they accomplished to clue you in on exactly what type of sword they were known for using. (Examining the different weapons on the rack tells you the type of weapon and what it’s specialized for.) So they could talk about a king who won a battle by breaking the enemy’s shield, and you know to pick up a heavier weapon, or hear about a lot of duels and pick up a sword meant for that. Then you place the sword in the shield, revealing them to be parts of an Aegislash variation if you’re correct, and the door opens to let you through! The leader’s team then consists of Bastiodon (since it’s got a shield for a face), Alolan Sandslash (it’s got a lot of sharp edges, plus it’s a Pokémon with a special variation like these Aegislash), and Aegislash (duh). Didn’t think of any details for a badge or TM, though I guess Swords Dance would be fitting?

I just really like the idea of regional variants and thought it’d be neat to apply something similar to Aegislash, since it’s one of my favorite Pokémon. This setup also provides incentive to fight the trainers but allows you to bypass doing so if you already know what to do or figure it out more quickly, though I guess there should be a penalty for making a failed attempt? Maybe that forces you to fight one of the trainers? I was also thinking maybe this could be part of a whole league where each gym focuses on the lore/variations of a specific Pokémon, but maybe that’s a bit much…
