Well, after a couple of days of unpacking we're starting to settle into the new house. My room is pretty much done now, although not that it matters much anyway, since in just over a month I'll be packing my things up again for university.
Still, just need to unpack a few more things and hang up some posters and it'll be set. It's a fair bit smaller than my room in the old house, but again it doesn't really matter as I won't be spending much time here once I'm back at university.

Took some pictures (which are of poor quality because it's 11:30 pm and thus there's no natural light... and maybe I'm no longer as good with a camera as I like to think): [1] [2] [3] [4]

My desk and bookshelf are a lot smaller than the old ones so a lot of my stuff will have to stay in boxes and be stored under my bed or on top of my wardrobe. Only have enough room for half of my CDs on the shelf Also not enough room for a chair, so I have to awkwardly sit on the edge of my bed when I want to use the computer.

Getting the notification "you have been given a warning" is a bit unsettling when you have forgotten that you renewed your premier membership.

And other than that, I still don't have much to blog about. My first coursework was set on Monday, and it involves 3000 words about the European Convention on Human Rights... done in a website FAQ format. I really hate doing writing that is supposed to be done like a website or magazine article, especially when it's just not something that you would actually see in an article. I'd much rather just do a 6000 word dissertation on it. But oh well, I'll have to live with it.

Tomorrow I'll be going to see Devin Townsend, so that should be fun. Would love to go see his London show, The Retinal Circus, on Saturday as that is going to be his biggest show yet, but it's sold out an I don't really have money to spend on it anyway. Admittedly, that probably wouldn't stop me, so it's good that it's sold out.

These have been released to celebrate the return of the metal band earthtone9 and their new album IV, and since I used to collect playing cards back when I still did a lot of sleight of hand, I figured I might as well pick them up.

They are very nice and a fine addition to my collection. Excuse the not-so-great picture though, I seem to have forgotten how to use my camera.
Now I'm actually considering starting to collect interesting decks of cards again.

And I should also probably mention that earthtone9 released a 16 track 'best of' compilation as a free download if anyone is interested in them. I can't really tag them with a genre, but I've heard them called progressive, alternative and post-metal, so there's that.

Decided to finally spend some of the money I got for my birthday and got all this stuff in the last couple of days.
You know, just to make sure I have things to distract me from doing university assignments and revising for exams.

Been a while since one of these music collection updates. Received the new Paradise Lost live album on vinyl + DVD today, and it's quite nice:

Really looking forward to giving it a listen/watch later. The first half of it is done with an orchestra and seems fantastic from the teasers.

Had my Sociology exam today and am now official done with exams. Forever. Well, until university.
It went quite well, but the 33 mark question was all kinds of nasty. "Assess whether interpretivist methods are appropriate for sociological research". Eugh, that's the one specific question I was hoping would not come up. Still, I think I did pretty well on it, and the other three questions were very nice, especially since one of the 21 mark questions was on suicide. So hopefully I got that A I need.

And now a whole summer of doing nothing and not caring about anything eduction related at all. Until results day, anyway.

...was as awesome as everyone says it was. Brilliant film, and I'm considering going to see it again.

Although I would have preferred not being shown the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises before the film. I like not having anything spoiled, thanks very much.

Well, with my dad working in Russia and my mum on holiday, it's gonna be a month or so of just me and the cat. This will be great - a whole month of peace and quiet, which is just what I need
I shall also take this opportunity to listen to the music my mum hates really loudly while I can.

Now, where's my copy of Reign In Blood?

After some delays with the official Century Media store, my copy of the new Paradise Lost album finally arrived yesterday:

A thing of beauty, and probably my album of the year. Of the announced albums I'm aware of this year, only Refused or Ihsahn have a chance of dethroning it.

This also means that it's a good time for a Paradise Lost collection post:

So, the two on the left are:

Drown in Darkness - The Early Demos

Then the pile in the middle:

    Lost Paradise
    Gothic
    Shades of God
    Icon (Limited edition digipak)
    Draconian Times
    One Second (Limited edition digipak)
    Host
    Believe in Nothing

    In Requiem
    The Anatomy of Melancholy
    Tragic Illusion 25 (The Rarities)

And finally the two on the right:

Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us (Limited edition digibook)

One of my all-time favourite bands, and one of my most valued collections.

Why can't it just be rainy and miserable like England's supposed to be? The heat was bad enough yesterday to get in the way of enjoying The Dark Knight Rises, but today it's just horrible. Won't be able to do anything worthwhile at all.
I really hate the heat >.>

Had my Sociology retake of the Mass Media unit today, and it went well. Was really worried about this one, but it turned out alright. Got easy questions, but would have liked if the they allowed to talk about Marxism more, as the main question was mostly Postmodernism vs Pluralism. Still, not complaining.
However, as it turns out, three A2 exams in three days is bloody exhausting. Now just have to prepare for my last exam, the Criminology unit of Sociology, which is on Tuesday.

Since my exams are coming to an end, I went on a bit of an online shopping spree. Bought a bunch of albums, a couple of books and a new gaming mouse. Hopefully it will arrive by the time my exam is finished.

And it's Wednesday the 13th Guess what artist I'll spend today listening to.

(If you guessed Wednesday 13, you're right!)

Recently finished my collection of albums by one of my favourite musicians - Tim Skold.
While there are a couple of things I'm missing, I have everything that I actually want.

    So let's go through it:

Terrible picture I know, but it's hard to fit everything in at a good resolution without the file size being too big.

Anyway, at the top left we have his solo project - Skold:
    Skold
    Anomie
    Suck EP
    Tonight EP

Top middle, we have the KMFDM albums with him as a member of the band:
    Symbols
    Adios
    Attak

Top right, Shotgun Messiah, which was his first band:
    Shotgun Messiah
    Second Coming
    Violent New Breed

Bottom left, we have the self-titled Skold vs KMFDM album which was a collaboration between the two a few years after Tim left KMFDM.

Bottom middle, the self titled album from the short-lived MDFMK. This was a project formed by Tim and two other members of KMFDM after they split up following Adios. However, MDFMK turned back into KMFDM just a couple of years later when the band officially reformed with Attak.

Bottom right, I Declare: Treason by Doctor Midnight & The Mercy Cult - an industrial metal supergroup with Tim on bass.

And finally, all the way off to the right side there, we have Infamous by Motionless in White, which was largely produced and engineered by Tim, although is otherwise a rather unremarkable album.

Obsessed? Maybe a little, but he definitely is a prolific artist.

The only things I'm missing are the three Marilyn Manson albums he was a member on which I honestly have no interest in, and the new Motionless in White album which he produced again, but apart from one song which was originally written by Tim and features him on vocals, that album is just kind of bad so I don't really intend on getting it.

Going into school for 4-5 hours of English revision before my exam on Monday. Should be some quality Hamlet time.

And after that, I'll be going to the cinema with a couple of friends to see MIB III, which I'm really looking forward to, having been a fan of the first two since I was a kid.

Might also go down to HMV to pick up some new albums, if they have them. I really need The Hunt by Grand Magus. The only problem is that it's a long trip, as the one closest to me closed down.

It's time for the albums that won't be making it to my top of the year list, but are still great albums which deserve attention.

Casualties of Cool by Casualties of Cool
This is a side project by Devin Townsend and Ché Aimee Dorval (who did the female vocals on Ki) which Devin made while wanting to take a break from all the heavy music he's been making. Indeed, very different from his usual music, this is a strange mix of country, ambient and blues rock with a very eerie and mysterious sound to it. Although extremely different from his other work, it is still unmistakably Devin Townsend.
It's a concept album about a traveler who is lured to distant a planet by a beautiful voice. Once he lands on it, he discovers an old radio which was the origin of the voice, and finds out that the planet is in fact sentient and uses the radio to lure unaware travelers and trap them, feeding on their fear. His attempts at escape being futile, he finds solace in the music from the radio and explores the planet, finding clues about other people once trapped on it. Really neat stuff.

The Serpent & the Sphere by Agalloch
A fantastic atmospheric black metal album, with influences from doom metal and folk.
Even if it doesn't necessarily live up to some of their previous albums, it's still excellent.

    Grand Morbid Funeral by Bloodbath
With Paradise Lost's Nick Holmes taking over the vocals, Bloodbath make another great death metal album.
It's crushingly heavy with some excellent instrumentation.

The World We Left Behind by Nachtmystium
The band's final album, it's a fitting progressive black metal swan song with great guitar parts and a very strong atmosphere.

    Esoteric Warfare by Mayhem
One of black metal's most infamous bands returns with another album, delivering ten absolutely crushing songs.

Run the Jewels 2 by Run the Jewels
The second album by this hip-hop collaboration between Killer Mike and El-P starts off with an extremely strong first two thirds or so, but unfortunately loses some steam by the final third which I think suffers from too many guest artists, making it feel far less cohesive than their debut. Regardless, the first two thirds are fantastic enough to earn a spot on this list.

Roads to the North by Panopticon
An excellent atmospheric black metal journey, with influences from melodic death metal and bluegrass.
It's also almost entirely created by the band's sole member Austin Lunn, with only the violin being performed by a guest, which is just incredible.

    Shogunate Macabre by Whispered
Melodic death metal with influences from Japanese folk music. More or less as cool as it sounds.

So, Paradise Lost just announced this thing:

Tragic Illusion 25 (The Rarities), which will be released on the 25th of October to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary and will be a compilation of rarities and B-sides from over the years. It will also contain a brand new song - Loneliness Remains - as well as re-recorded versions of Gothic and Our Saviour.
I'll definitely be picking this up. I already have five of the songs from limited edition copies of albums, but I am interested in the rest.

Never quite paid attention at how expensive university accommodation can be until I started applying for it for my first choice university today.
The cheapest self-catered option is £97.86 weekly or £3914.40 annually, as a 40-week contract...
    That's a lot of money for a student ;_;
  17. Queen of Liars
Well, I got my results for my first year of university today and I am very happy because I passed, with a B in each module. Not that I thought I was going to fail, but it's a massive relief nonetheless to know that I'll definitely be coming back next year.
I guess now I can truly relax for the rest of summer.

Well, it's my second week of lectures and my third week at university overall. So far I'm enjoying it, but I can confirm that law does indeed require a lot of work and reading. Just looking at the pile of books I have to read is enough to rid me of any joy or energy I may have. Admittedly though, they are pretty interesting and it does remind me of Sociology, so that's good.
Fresher's Fair was on Thursday, so I took the opportunity to sign up for the Alternative Music Society, the Poker Society and the Law Society. Hopefully those will be fun.
Also as it turns out, there is an Extreme Ironing Society here.

On a separate note, Epicloud by the Devin Townsend Project is a fantastic album. Been listening to it a lot since it arrived last week, and the bonus disk of demos, Epiclouder, might even be better than the actual album. Either way, the album lives up to its name, and although Devin was definitely telling the truth when he said that this would be a much simpler and more accessible and straightforward album than usual, it's still great.

And now I'll go back to reading law books.

Well, I thought I'd share an album I recently discovered and am loving: Hadal by Velcra.
Velcra made some great industrial metal with their first two albums, but the fantastic third album Hadal is more of a combination of industrial rock, electronic and trip hop. I almost want to say that it's like a heavier, industrial version of Portishead.

Unfortunately, I am completely unable to find a copy of the album for sale anywhere. The best I could find was the MP3 download on Amazon, but no sign of a CD copy.
  20. Queen of Liars
I have now begun my quest to get around 10-15 of my favourite albums on vinyl, to go alongside the CDs.

The first such acquisition is either my second or third favourite album - Das Seelenbrechen by Ihsahn, in lovely limited edition coloured vinyl. Here it is next to the digibook CD version:

    Bloody gorgeous.

I sense an impending feeling of guilt tomorrow when I realise that I wasted my four-day weekend getting almost no work done and instead spent it listening to a bunch of albums and watching a couple of movies and some stand-up comedy DVDs. I really need to get my stuff together and get ready for my exams.

But of course tomorrow will be wasted by going to see The Avengers. Can't wait. I made sure to avoid all the trailers, as I always do, so that nothing is spoiled for me.
