The SVRY was founded in 1890, in Baker City, Oregon. It was a combination lumber line and livestock line...try saying that five times fast.
As the years went by, the railroad expanded to the west. At its best it went to Prarie city, 13 miles from my home! As the name says, it went through the Sumpter Valley, and to Sumpter, Oregon.
The the line began to fail. Profits went down, and portions of the line were abandoned. In 1947, when the railway officially closed, it only owned a small diesel and 1.5 miles of track!
In the late 1900's, volunteers began the Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration Group. It has currently restored 5.5 miles of track, rolling stock, a Heisler loco, and a 2-8-2 Mikado steam loco. It is still at work. So if your heading towards Sumpter, where the line is, stop by, and ride the Stump Dodger!
Did i mention it is a narrow gauge line?
