  1. I was torn between the sleek simplicity of number two and the somewhat eerie number ten, but ultimately I had to pick the latter. I think it's nice it isn't a limited Bionicle posterboy, but an original MoC incorporating pieces from each pool (Technic, Bionicle and System). Still, a good bunch, each deserving of their spots.

  2. Okay, first off I'd like to clear one thing up; Artakha's Nephew's post should be completely disregarded. He hasn't been with us for very long, and was thus not aware of what has been going on with MNOLG: CE at all. He is mistaken in his post, and I apologize for the confusion caused because of it.

We do not plan to participate in illegal activities, and never have planned to do so. We will not be canceling MNOLG: CE. We also do not plan to make a profit on MNOLG: CE. As you know, the bundle is set to include a 3D printed and dyed MNOLG-style Pakari and Takua's backpack, along with a CD and CD case with printed MNOLG: CE graphics. The disc will NOT contain the game itself; It will be available to download for free on SolisMagna.com, and can be burned to the included disc. The cost to purchase the MNOLG: CE bundle will be equal to the cost required for us to produce it; there will be no profit left over for us. This is not about profit; it's about making a high quality, fan-made remastered version of the most beloved BIONICLE online game of all time.

MNOLG: CE is based off the original game files of the Mata Nui Online Game, but with many changed aspects. A large majority of the image assets used for scenes and characters is not of the best quality (i.e. the beach in the very first scene). In MNOLG: CE, we replace these low quality images with remastered, high quality SVG images that will look perfect on any screen size. The beach is one image among a plethora of lower quality images throughout the original game, such as the sky in many scenes and a select few Matoran. Other aspects of the game are being improved as well, and will be revealed in the coming months.

In no way does MNOLG: CE claim to be official, or officially endorsed by LEGO or Templar Studios. Some people mentioned that they think we are trying to fly under the radar of LEGO with this. That is not true. We've been trying to publicize it quite a bit recently. It's no secret that we're doing this, and we certainly don't have any intention of keeping it from LEGO. Post about MNOLG: CE all you want on BZP. We are grateful to those who spread the word. Think of it as something similar to MNOLG: The Bohrok Swarms, but with an included disc and case styled to look like something LEGO might have released. In the end, we make no profit from this. Generating community interest is enough for us, and the beauty of projects like these is that they are not in violation of the law. Once again, case in point, MNOLG: The Bohrok Swarms.

I hope this clears up most of the confusion and questions arising from the topic and its replies, but if not, feel free to ask any other questions about the MNOLG: CE project.

Well, then! Things have been nicely cleared up and I thank you for it. Hopefully the earlier confused frenzy will serve to brew hype and bring the project to the attention of others!

  3.

I don't think a free, fan project would incur any legal wrath.

It wasn't going to be free, though.

I apologise if I was too subtle or misleading. What I was nudging at, was perhaps the possibility of you releasing your remastered version (if it is indeed as close to release as I've been led to believe,) for free to the community. Considering you wouldn't be monetising the content, I don't see a problem with it (unless you were actually using the MNOLG's files, which appear to be owned by Lego and Templar?)... that said, I'm no lawyer.

If that's not possible, or the game is too unstable as is, then that's fair enough. I was just hoping you might've wanted to share what you already have so that your work isn't left to rot and that the time spent on it wasn't a waste.

  4. So long as we keep this "quiet" I doubt that it will end in some huge legal issue.

but isn't that like when people commit crime or avoid paying their taxes and try to hide it from the authorities.......

Considering all that Bionicle (and thus Lego,) has done to keep our pleasant little community together, I think it's immensely disrespectful and not to mention dangerous to simply go ahead with monetising such a project and hope that nobody finds out, or nothing happens. I apologise if you were not actually advocating such a course of action.

Maybe this group does have a writ of permission from Lego to use their trademarks - I'm sure many of us here would like to see any kind of official proclamation. Else, the only way I see this being viable is to drop the sale of any explicitly labelled lego/bionicle content and just sell custom masks, which I'm sure are recognisable enough.

Evening, everyone; I represent SM.com, including the creators of the MNOLG: CE which was intended for a release this summer. Here is an official statement on the subject, official in the respect that I've deemed that it's necessary at this point to save our project:

We at SolisMagna.com began work on said product with full awareness of its illegality, and have been previously attempting to avoid discussing said aspect of it. We apologize for any confusion or outrage that the game might have spurned, and plan to cease work on the game and indefinitely cancel its release immediately.

That's a shame. I hope that the major motivation for this project was not do$h but a love for our dear matoran universe.

Will you be releasing any resources etc. that you've worked on so far? Is it not possible to cobble together a remastered version using what you have already? I was under the impression that a release was very soon... and I don't think a free, fan project would incur any legal wrath.

  5. So, how does the legal side of this project look? I imagine there's no problem selling 3d printed components and all, but how much leniency is there with the use of the Bionicle trademark and all that other jazz? Is the 'remastered game' made using the base flash files and all, or is it a reproduction of the MNOLG with original meshes/artwork/etc.?

  6. Gokukoku no Brynhildr episode 4, 10 minutes in.

"I really like this anime, especially how so far it's avoided any really stupid fanservice despite all the girls running around"

Literally five seconds later: 'Hey there's an onsen around here'

"Wait, what? That's really not a good sign"

    one minute later

    "Oh god dangit."

So yeah I dunno. I like GnB but some stuff here seems much too unnecessary.

I feel exactly the same way. Although, to some extent, you could try to reason that Kazumi's... certain personality traits... are the result of being exposed to the internet in all of its glory, but I think that would be being too generous!

As for Space Dandy, I need to start that after my upcoming exams. Both Cowby Bebop and Samurai Champloo are some of my favourite anime, and it's good to see Watanabe take on more sci-fi.

Wait... GnB is from the author of Elfen Lied? I'm instantly interested.

Indeed! Lynn Okamoto made them both - I guess he has a penchant for germanic inspired names and experimented-on girls with 'magic' powers?

  7. Is anybody watching Hitsugi no Chaika? As much as I love the main party (as mercenary their motivations may seem,) I would like to see the Gillette Corps get some more screen time.

Other than that, the only thing I'm watching this season is Gokukoku no Brynhildr... It's painfully obvious that it's written by the same author of Elfen Lied. Still, the mystery keeps it a pretty compelling watch!

  8. QUICK EDIT: Apologies, the title has cut off, the full title is viewable in the URL bar. Else, this post is entitled 'Mother's Day Special: Bionicle: a Story of Female Oppression and Male Vulnerability?'

The following conclusions do not in any way reflect my own thoughts towards gender equality etc. but is rather an interpretation of Bionicle's storyline, and what I believe it stands for. For the record, I find equality swaggy.

Not too long ago, I was reading a thread which covered Lewa’s many instances of misfortune (all of those mind control mishaps,). Not long after, I was chatting with some friends about how another female member of the original Mata team would’ve been interesting to see.

I suddenly had an epiphany. What I realised was… jarring, to say the least.

It seems that directed misfortune does not only befall Lewa but a large proportion of the male Bionicle cast. Let’s look at some precedents:

    • Lewa having his mind taken over (by infected kanohi, krana and Tren Krom.)
    • Tahu becoming corrupted by the one of the Rhakshi’s oozings in the Mask of Light movie.
    • Onewa, Whenu and Nuju (and I suppose you could count Lhikan,) being apprehended by Nidhiki and Krekka in the Legends of Metru Nui movie.

Where does such a scenario happen where it is a female character being controlled? Is it because the authors think it is too exploitative to have a female character be subjected to another’s control, or because the authors are making a point that those male characters are weak and susceptible to mind control? Something else? It seems to me that Bionicle, in this way, is quite sexist.

The all too convenient immunity to mind control is just one thing I’ve noticed. A study of the vortixx shows they are a matriarchal society, generally draconian or villainous:

    • The dynamic between Sidorak and Roodaka in the Web of Shadows movie; her scheming and plotting effectively leaves Sidorak as a pawn in her power plays. The movie seems to imply that Roodaka is the real power behind Sidorak.
    • Adding to the above, we should note that the island of Xia in the MU is the worst kind of matriarchy – a nation which enslaves its males and forces them into dangerous, taxing labour.

Additionally, in the Toa empire parallel world, it is again a female character (Toa Tuyet,) in command, exercising an equally as draconian rule. The character of Annona, who is considered female, is another example of a woman in the Bionicle universe with 'dangerous' power (she was the source of the Iron Tribe's 'Dreaming Plague' on Bara Magna). She has a relationship with the female skrall collective, who intended to slay their male counterparts after meeting the being Angonce. Is this just another layer to the idea that female collectives inevitably turn against the opposite sex? It is likely that this motivation arose out of the male skrall collective's decision to abandon the sisters - but what prompted that? A fear of the power that the females exclusively held?

When compiling all of these notions, it seems to me that a major thread running Bionicle is female empowerment. However, these presentations are often far from flattering and if anything, portray women as being manipulative or only too eager to take advantage of any power they have to a malevolent end – typically that of male subjugation. In fairness, the above examples typically show this as a result of when females are gathered in a group - the likes of Gali, Helryx and so on are considered 'good' because they are part of largely male institutions.

Insults are not just directed at one sex as males are portrayed as being weak minded fellows who aren’t robust enough to resist their would be female oppressors.

Does Bionicle promote ideas of underground, exploitative matriarchies? Does it deny the equal opportunity for females to be subjected to the same risks of combat as male counterparts? Is the universal gender critique (as I’ve observed it,) simply a nihilistic statement on society?

Let’s hear your thoughts on this serious subject.

(apologies for any conceited/contrived language or sentences, my writing style is much too turgid)

  9. While most of the entries here have some merit, my favourites would have to be #2 through to #8.

Entry #5's banner especially is crisp and inventive but I adore entry #2's simplicity - functional, yet it binds together elements obviously Tohu-esque with an amount of minimalism that maintains the aura of mystery and aloofness our great leader radiates.

  10. What references?
