Original Fiction

Why does it seem difficult for me to write original fiction, whereas writing fanfiction is easier?

I have just found that, when I work on original stuff, I am rarely satisfied with it, whereas I usually become pretty satisfied with my fanfiction quickly. This is especially troubling because I do not plan to write fanfiction for all of my life. I want to move onto original fiction, but my few attempts at writing original works has always been hard for me, and not the good hard that accompanies good writing, either. It's the bad kind of hard, the kind that makes you feel like your story is a pointless piece of trash and you should never have even tried it to begin with.

Perhaps I simply need to write more original fiction to get used to using my own worlds and characters. Actually, I technically already do that with fanfics in a way, but I mean writing stories that are totally, 100% my own, that I created myself and take place in universes I personally created. I think I should probably just write some original fiction short stories for practice before moving onto original novels, although I have tried writing original short stories before and they still felt wrong to me.

Anyone else have any tips for making the transition from writing fanfiction to writing original fiction smoother, even just a little?

Believe me, I know exactly how you feel. I'm trying to write the first draft of a book, but I can't help feeling that it's... empty, somehow. Devoid of feeling. Not well-constructed. I don't know if it's me or if the story is actually bad, though; I've written a couple historical fiction stories as homework and they don't seem too bad.

My suggestion would be to move on from a storyline like Bionicle and go to a much less-established storyline. For example, I'm going to attempt writing Star Wars fan-fiction because Star Wars has a much vaster storyline.

Also, you may want to try writing a bunch of different stories based on a very wide variety of subjects or already-existant storylines. That way you'll be able to gain experience writing about a whole bunch of different types of stories, be they science fiction, fantasy, or even historical fiction. Experiment. Also, feedback from friends is an excellent way to improve your writing.

I hope this helps... especially because I need the help, too. :P
