The main stuff you need to know is use 'e' for extruding new vertices(and preferably edges and faces at the same time.), 'g' for moving stuff, that you'll be in edit mode a lot, 'f' is used to link up vertices and make faces if those weren't made in the extruding process.

 

Also, are you using a scroll wheel mouse? That is more or less the most important thing, since otherwise you'll need to use the keyboard shortcuts, which are more time consuming IMO. Basically, scrolling up and down normally is used for zooming in and out respectively; clicking the wheel and moving the mouse around is used for changing the 3D view; and holding shift and clicking the wheel and moving the mouse allows you to pan around the view. =)
