These two words are well known gaming icons, and why not, they've deserve it. The original Metroid blew the gaming world away with two simple things. Samus was a female. And the often looked over ability to go left.

However, I'm not talking about the history of the games, we are going to explore the life of the famous heroine, Samus.

Where does it all start? Her story starts with the Metroid e-Manga, which goes through her childhood and it shows us why she has such a hatred for space pirates.

Pre-Metroid & Metroid: Zero Mission
It all starts with the creation of the Galactic Federation, there was one main ship which helped bring prosperity and did the important negotiations. It needed an energy to power it called Afloraltite. These energy crystals were mined on Earth colony K-2L.



Samus at age three lived on K-2L with her family. One day Samus has her bag taken by a squirrel-like animal. At the same time the Chozo arrive and need Afloraltite, they have a small chat with Samus' father... when Samus and some other kids race. Samus bumps into one of the Chozo named Old Bird knocking off his cloak. Obviously Samus is afraid, however Old Bird says, "My appearance may differ, but inside peace dwells within both your heart and mine just the same."



Samus, being the kid she is thinks Old Bird can help her and pulls him away from the negotiations. She still wants her bag back. Old Bird, suggests that perhaps the little animal just wants to be friends, and suggests Samus gives it a name.

That name is Ponchi.


Back at the negotiations the Chozo are ready to leave as they know that boss Aran was entrusted by the federation. Old Bird apologizes for the rudeness of the Chozo, and they leave.

The reason they needed the Afloraltite is also revealed. They wanted to stop the Metroid Cultivation! The Metroids will multiply.



Meanwhile, General Ridley and the Space Pirates find the location of the Afloraltite: K-2L.

And they want that energy. Boss Aran finds out that they are coming and has a distress signal sent out.

As Samus is in the forest playing with Ponchi, the Space Pirates attack, and things blow up.

Samus wanders into Ridley and tries to befriend him. Ridley says, "Hm. Can't have a cute girl around... we just can't!!!"

Ridley attacks... and Samus' mother sacrifices herself to save Samus. Around the same time her father detonates the Afloraltite, surprising Ridley as his ship explodes.



The Chozo arrive too late. No one survived... Except Samus and Ponchi.

Samus and Ponchi are taken to Zebes, and Mother Brain states an important fact. Humans can't survive on Zebes as they cannot adapt. And yes, we are talking about -the- Mother Brain.



Thus, the Chozo give Samus a gift, they infuse her with their DNA. Samus can adapt and becomes more skilled than the average human. Eleven years later we find out that Samus has been training and has a power suit.
