Important Things Today

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Nov 27 2015 · 155 views

If you live in America, try to avoid going out if possible, since I hear Black Friday gets really, really intense.

But if you do go out, and if you play Pokemon, try stopping by a McDonalds with free Wi-Fi to get Hoopa via Nintendo Zone.

Or, maybe put that one off, since it's available until December 23rd.

Safety first! Pokemon close second!

Testing the Limits of Possibility

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Nov 23 2015 · 205 views

If you muster up enough shounen willpower, anything is possible, right?

Then…I wonder if somebody could actually do it.

Maybe…if circumstances aligned, and they found the right path…then just maybe…

Someone could rewrite Galidor and make it good.

Ignoring the Spoiler Alert

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Nov 22 2015 · 185 views

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to experience so-called “late arrival spoilers” for the first time?

Like, how you might have felt if you had seen the Doctor’s first regeneration? Or the first time Goku went Super Saiyan, and when all the higher levels were discovered? Or how about finding out that Darth Vader was Luke’s father?

They’re all presented with such shock and drama, but I know there’s no point in putting them in spoiler tags now because people know these things even if they don’t follow Doctor Who or DBZ or Star Wars. I mean, they’re still great and we can still enjoy them, but sometimes I feel like I’m missing out on a part of the experience.

I can remember being surprised and excited pretty much whenever Bionicle made a new reveal, so I guess I want to recapture those feelings if I can. Unfortunately, I’ve become quite bad about getting spoilers for things beforehand, even aside from the ones that have filtered into pop culture. Still, when I am able to exert a little self-control, I do feel like I’m enjoying things more—I think that’s why I got so much enjoyment out of Kingdom Hearts 3D and Steins;Gate, since I only knew a few spoilers heading in and was surprised by a lot of what they did. Since those three series I mentioned at the start are still going on, I guess I have the potential to be surprised by new things they do, though there’s still that sense that I missed out. (Plus if how the forms revealed in the latest movies are anything to go by, Dragon Ball Super is going to spoil itself in magazines before getting to actually show its new stuff.)

Oh well, I guess it’s sort of inevitable. Not to mention a lot of the things I follow come out in Japan first and I have to battle the urge to find out what happened for a few months if I want to get the full experience (barring quick subs). This is just a lingering thought I felt like typing up while watching DBZ Kai. :P

Warm Up

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Nov 20 2015 · 128 views

I got to thinking more about the world I was implicitly building back in Towards No End, and now I’m considering writing a full epic set in it. We’re gonna need a Toa team, though, so I’m trying to write some shorter stories to feel out their characters in the hopes that that will help me write them better.

So, I wrote Malleable to start experimenting with Dreynarn, who will be joining Sukahu on his eventual quest. It’s over 800 words and I’m not too sure about the quality, but, eh, at least I wrote something. I also want to try to write a story introducing the Toa who will lead these two, and then maybe one more trying to figure out how they function as a team. Maybe once that’s done I’ll have a decent place to start for the epic?

Before that, though, I should probably get back to the projects I’ve already started on that I haven’t updated in a while, eheheheh…

Swords and Stuff

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Nov 18 2015 · 150 views

It’s been a while since I mentioned Amalgam Atlas. It’ll probably be a while still before that idea makes any real progress. I’ve gotten a bit of brainstorming done, though.

Since this is reworking my old Bioni-Lords series, I’m trying to figure out how much gets carried over/redone, and one of the things that I was reminded of recently is a set of four Spirits who each wielded a different type of sword and were important to the lore (sort of). As a way of changing this up, and making it more versatile, I’m thinking of instead having four legendary sword schools known to the people of this world.

Some of these schools will be directly tied to the group from the original series. One was a Keyblade-user, and if I have a story taking place in a world that mashes together an unlimited number of other worlds, I’m not going to not have a functioning Keyblade order. Another from this group used a “Zodiac Style”, a set of techniques inspired by the animals of the Chinese Zodiac—I’d really like to keep that concept, though I think I’ll need to seriously revise the mechanics.

One of the schools is going to be based around a different idea from Bioni-Lords: a technique that brings the soul of a deceased individual back into the material plane as a blade. The form of the blade and the powers it grants/contains are determined by the individual soul, and I’m thinking this new version will have an enhanced level of the technique that lets the blade turn into something else. This should add to the variety, and it’s something I did want to show with at least one such weapon in the original series before cancelling it. (Plus, part of this might be related to my lingering interest in certain aspects of Bleach…)

For the last, I wasn’t entirely sure what to use, so since this is a jumble of series anyway I figured I might just toss in the Jedi Order. Lightsabers! This then led to the idea of one of the characters I have planned, a member of a group based on characters from a certain anime I enjoy, being portrayed as a Jedi (it’s only slightly different than what I was initially planning), so it’s pretty much guaranteed at this point.

I’m thinking they’ll be collectively referred to as “The Cardinal Blades” or something. Another term I thought of was “Legend Schools”, but now I’m thinking of using that term to broadly describe these and other, non-sword-related organizations, probably including a school of Mask Makers at the very least. Each has a slightly different alignment: the Zodiac school is always looking to the stars and basically ignores the world around them, so they really don’t participate in much of anything going on; the Keyblade order takes action, but tries to avoid unnecessary “meddling” and mostly stays in the shadows; the Jedi Order would have the most political presence and influence, practically being considered a government; and the soul blade school isn’t so much a formal organization, a lot of people go to learn the technique but then leave to pursue their own goals after that.

Not sure I want this to be focal to the plot or anything, but I feel like it’s a decent piece of world-building in-progress. Now to think up a bunch of other random stuff until this actually feels like a place with texture.

Technic Tournament 2 Reminder

Round 1 ends tomorrow at 10:30 AM EST!

New players can join whenever, but it’s only going to get harder to catch up to the other players’ Widget counts, especially with the option of ending rounds early this game. Joining before the first round ends is your best shot at winning!

Yo Yo Umaraka

Looks like the Nintendo Direct was basically things that might be fairly cool but I don't actually care enough to pay for!

I mean, it's great that they're celebrating the 20th anniversary of Pokemon, but if it's not a full remake (and we probably can't even transfer our Pokemon out of the VC versions) then I don't feel compelled to buy it. Which is good, because I should not be spending money. And, I understand that remakes would take a lot of time and effort that's surely better-spent on other things, like the Pokemon Z Version we all know is on the way. If they had released Green in America I might have considered it.

Although I do still want to buy Pokken Tournament! The Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card sounds cool, and it makes me wonder what other amiibo compatibility the game might have. I also like the sound of the Golden Mega Man amiibo, but there's no way I can afford the collector's edition it comes in, and since I already know I suck at Classic Mega Man I'm okay with that.

And then there's Cloud. It looks like he might have a fairly interesting Limit Break charging feature? Which would justify his appearance beyond being a cash cow, though I do understand that's really all the reason needed. But I've developed an irrational disdain for FFVII and its fans and I don't see that going away. Get Square to release some DLC fighters from Kingdom Hearts or The World Ends With You and then you'll have my attention!

I Have Approval Now?!
