Harmonic Convergence Did It

Okay, now that I’ve seen the new episodes of Legend of Korra, it’s time to make a long, spoiler-filled blog post about them!

Thoughts So Far:

--Why are there spirits only in Republic City? Shouldn’t they be all over the world by now?

--I didn’t think anything of Korra’s approval rating being 8%, but apparently it’s a reference to the approval rating of a certain live action movie that may or may not be based on Avatar. So it pleases me.

--Oh, it looks like that extra skill Korra learned last season will still be useful, how ni—oh wait, wait, no, no it didn’t work and now she’s probably never going to use it again. Boo.

--Speaking of forgotten abilities, the scene with Korra talking down the new airbender made me remember energybending. I mean, she did learn that. Now this guy wants her to take away his airbending, and she should be able to do that, right? Or is her energybending only useful for restoring lost bending and not taking away bending? Did she lose it when her connection to the past cycles were broken since it was Aang who gave it to her? Not that she used in it Book 2 either…

--Tenzin’s going on about change, but he doesn’t seem to realize that if he wants a new Air Nation he might have to change the way said nation does things. It’s very realistic to see people not wanting to give up their current lives just to rebuild some dead nation. I’m interested in seeing where this goes.

--So yeah…new Airbenders. What’s that, Harmonic Convergence did it? Well I guess that’s all we’re getting on that, let’s move on.

--I’m still trying to figure out how bending…works. It seems like there’s a degree of heredity involved, but the Avatar Cycle seems to imply that a person’s soul retains their bending through reincarnation. But if it was that simple, then we would’ve seen more airbenders before now—all those dead nomads reincarnated at some point, right? Of course, air was weird in that it seems to have been super hereditary or something. Maybe one needs to have a soul that was a bender in a previous life and also have some sort of genetic trigger? That could be it—bending is characterized as a combination of physical ability and spirituality, which I’m guessing is why you can’t bend in the Spirit World unless your body goes through a portal. (Like how the Iden works, basically.) But, while that could account for airbenders reaching the brink of extinction (lack of genetic trigger), that does not account for all the new airbenders. Maybe the shift in energy modified the spirit component, allowing it to accept a much wider range of genetic triggers than before? Meh, if we haven’t gotten an explanation by now, we’re probably not going to.

--Villains for all four elements?! How rad is that?! I was hoping we wouldn’t have an antagonist from the Water tribe this season, since we’ve only had one named antagonist who wasn’t from the Water tribe before this (two if you count “Lieutenant” as a name), but I’ll get over it for this. I don’t know enough about Ming-Hua to form an opinion just yet, but it’s interesting that she’s focusing on water tentacles. We’ve seen the technique before, but I don’t recall it being utilized in particularly momentous ways, and her usage of it to make up for her lack of arms shows a highly refined method that I cannot question the danger of.

--Zaheer must be fairly skilled if his prison has that much security before he became a bender. I want to know more about that. As for being so good at airbending after just getting it, well…I like that they tried to explain that by having him familiar with Air Nation writings. That and Harmonic Convergence did it. You know, for the sake of having all four elements on the dark side, I’ll put up some with fudging.

--I heard about a “lavabender” before seeing the episode, and I was wondering how that would go. I was fully expecting “Harmonic Convergene did it—that’s how this guy can combine two bending arts!” But the ability is more narrow than I was expecting (not to say it isn’t cool!), so it must require a lot of focus. Also it seems he had this before Convergence, since no one remarks upon it. I mean, waterbenders have always been able to control the temperature of water at will. Ghazan might just be the first one who tried applying the same principle to earthbending, and, again, it seems to require a lot of focus if he’s using it exclusively for his magma shuriken. I still want to know more, though.

--Ah yes, Ba Sing Se is evil…again. I guess it’s interesting that even after all this change, this messed up place is still the same, but still…I dunno. We’ve been here before, we’ve seen this before, it could still be interesting but I can’t shake this feeling of repetition just yet.

--Of all the things from episode 1, the thing that turned out to be foreshadowing was Meelo’s comment about an airbending army. They hid that wall.

--Kai. Hm…I dunno, I don’t have any reason to like him yet.

--Ah yes, after all the expertly done romance subplots that everyone loves, lets add another one! It totally doesn’t make it seem like we brought Jinora along for the sole purpose of giving her a love interest!

--Old Zuko looks sorta like Roku. I am pleased by this. And he has a dragon? So there are more dragons now? Well, I guess that makes sense, they’ve had time. Cool.

--With Mako giving the scarf to his grandmother, a tiny amount of respect for him has been restored. A tiny amount.

What I’d Like to See:

--Apparently Zaheer and friends want to destroy the Order of the White Lotus and the Avatar. I’d like to know why.

--A proper explanation of Ghazan’s abilities would be nice. I’m still going with the idea above, but I want an explicit explanation for at least this.

--At least one anti-bender gaining (air)bending. This is totally possible, right? Can you imagine how they would react?

--Speaking of anti-benders, I want to know what happened to that movement. It’s not very likely that they completely died off after Amon was found out. It looks like they’re appearing in the new video game, which I guess is supposed to be canon, so maybe that’ll help us make some sense of it.

--The Fire-Lord, maybe? We’ve seen the leaders of every other country, so…

--We have been told that we’ll learn more about the Bei-Fong family, and I’m looking forward to that.

--Bumi getting airbending…I want to see where this goes. I’ll hold off for now.

--Since Zuko’s made his Korra debut, we need to see him interact with Katara. This is a requirement.

I’m trying to be more optimistic about things lately, so I’ll say I’m excited about this new book. I will, however, reserve the right to roll my eyes at the mention of Harmonic Convergence for a while longer, but maybe I’ll work that out too. :P

I thought the book got off on a pretty solid foot.

I like the fact that they seem to be focusing more on simple character interactions (between the brothers and their extended family and Korra/Asami) rather than romance, though I as well roll my eyes at the Jinora/Kai subplot. (and Kai in general I find irritating) Speaking of Jinora, I was hoping we'd get some explanation for the...thing...she did at the end of book 2, since I was really, really hoping the only reason they didn't explain last time was lack of time. Doesn't look like they will, though....

I am excited about the group of international superbenders. Each seems like a fairly unique character and they seem to be using their powers in fairly novel ways. The fact that the non-bender leader got air is pretty convenient, but I'm willing to let it slide too since otherwise it'd basically just be an extra-deadly triple threat gang. We do need to see more about why they're doing what they're doing, why Zaheer required so much security, and why Zuko seemed so worried (hopefully flashbacks again?)

The stuff with the Earth Queen being eeeevuul does feel kinda repetitive, but hopefully it all ties back to the theme of change. Obviously whatever they tried to do (assuming they tried anything) to fix the Earth Kingdom since ATLA didn't work, so hopefully this can lead to more permanent change. It seems like a reasonable route for the season to take, at least for a bit. It's a bit hard to see how the 3 plotlines we've got going on are going to end up working at the end, though. I just hope it ends up better than the past 2 seasons.

I don't think season 2 was bad. But I think they have a bit of wirk to do. The prisoner thing interests me greatly. This could be good.
